Don't forget sacrifices of past leaders: Najib

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:47 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today reminded the people not to forget the sacrifices of past leaders in freeing Malaysia from the colonialists.

He said that while Muslims were celebrating Aidilfitri, which entered its
second day today, they should never forget the achievements of leaders who won
the nation its independence.

"In the joy of Aidilfitri, I hope we do not forget the struggles of our
forefathers in fighting for the country's independence. Happy 54th Merdeka Day,"

he said in a Twitter feed.

This year's National Day, carrying the slogan "1Malaysia: Successful

Transformation, Prosperous People", is slightly different in that it will be
celebrated simultaneously with Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

Yesterday, at the Aidilfitri open house of the prime minister and cabinet
ministers at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya, Najib cut a cake in a symbolic gesture
to mark National Day. -- Bernama

Karpal wants Mat Sabu to retract statement on Bukit Kepong

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 10:46 PM PDT

GEORGE TOWN -- DAP chairman Karpal Singh wants his fellow Pakatan leader Mohamad Sabu to retract a recent statement he allegedly made regarding the Bukit Kepong incident in the 1950s.

He said the incident should not be disputed and must be accepted because it had been historically documented that the policemen and their family members fought the communist guerillas.

"Touching upon such a sensitive issue more than 61 years after the event is certainly unjustified and I think he should seriously consider retracting it in view of the negative reception of it by all quarters," he said here today.

Mat Sabu, who is PAS deputy president, allegedly remarked during a talk in Tasek Gelugor, here, on Aug 21 that the communist guerillas who attacked and killed 25 police personnel and their families in the Bukit Kepong tragedy were the real heroes as they were actually fighting the British.

He said Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, should immediately do the needful to assuage the feelings of the families of those who perished in the attack.

"I am not anti-PAS and I am not anti-Sabu, but I do not agree with his statement here on this issue," he said.

However, the Bukit Gelugor MP said Mat Sabu's statement could not be justified and that it could damage Pakatan.

"He should retract his statement as I do not see why he should not. I do not think what he said has any positive amplification for Pakatan; it's negative," he said.

Mat Sabu later clarified the remark, stating that those who attacked Bukit Kepong were heroes because they were freedom fighters, and not because they attacked Malay policemen. -- BERNAMA

ALOR STAR: Flood victim Tengku Nahar Tengku Mansor, 48, was devastated when he came home to find his collection of vinyl records was soaked in mudwaters after the city was ravaged by floods last Wednesday.

The father of three only realised the irreparable damages when he returned to his house at Taman Rakyat, Jalan Sultanah Bahiyah here on Saturday after seeking refuge at a relative's home in Hutan Kampung.

Self-employed Tengku Nahar said his record collection were kept in the storeroom of his double-storey house and he had forgotten about the records when his family were rushing to evacuate the house last week.

"I was busy moving our furniture to the upper-floor when the flood started to reach our doorstep last Wednesday. I forgot about the records that was stacked in a box which I placed on the floor of the store room," said crestfallen Tengku Nahar.

Tengku Nahar said he may salvage the vinyl records but the album covers were spoilt.

His collection includes evergreens and superstars the likes of Bee Gees, Dan Hill, Neil Young, David Gates, Kim Carnes, Cliff Richard, Nat King Cole, and Graham Nash.

Tengku Nahar began collecting the vinyl records in the 1970s, and he loved each of them dearly.

"This is the precious collection of my life, I simply could not believe that I forgot about them when we were leaving the house," he added.

Tengku Nahar had lived in Langkawi for over 20 years before moving back to his hometown in Alor Star two months ago.

"I had never expected this area would be inundated by flood as it was never badly affected even during the major flood in 2005. I certainly hope that it would not occur again," he said.

He thanked the volunteer rescuers for helping them in the evacuation process.

"I didn't realise how serious the situation was until the rescuers arrived at 11pm on Thursday telling us to leave the house as the authority was about to cut-off the electricity supply on safety ground," he said, sharing his first experience with flood disaster.

Tengku Nahar said he was planning to frame all the vinyl record and have them hung on the wall but did not have the time to do so.

He only managed to frame his most treasured album 'Thriller', by the late King of Pop Michael Jackson. "At least I still have this."

Nation needs DNA banks, says lead CSI

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:50 AM PST

By Nor Hidayati Mokhtar

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia needs to build DNA banks or repositories to assist in solving crimes and prosecuting cases, according to a senior forensic police officer.

Head of the Police Forensic Lab's Crime Scene Unit (CSU) Supt Amidon Anan said the ability to collect DNA at crime scenes often proved futile as the forensic lab had only a limited bank of samples.

"Having the DNA is useful if we have suspects we can match the samples against. But we are unable to use the samples to help us find potential perpetrators as we don't have DNA banks like what you see on the television series CSI," said Amidon.

He was speaking to students from UiTM's Faculty of Communication and Media Studies on the topic, 'Crime as the elective subject' at the campus here on Oct 5.

The need to create and develop DNA banks was critical, said Amidon, given the high public expectations on the police to safeguard society and reduce crime.

He said: "DNA banks can help the CSU in many pending cases, such as Nurin Jazlin. It was sad that while we were able to collect a DNA sample from the body of the child, we had little means or resources to match it with the likely murderer," he said.

Nurin Jazlin was a high-profile case of a missing child whose body was subsequently dumped in a gym bag in Petaling Jaya more than three years ago.

Amidon expressed his frustration that the CSU's repeated requests for the establishment of DNA banks seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

While the cost of implementing such a project would be substantial, he said it would only escalate over time and "if not now, then when?"

"It is not about being a hero in solving these cases. It is about finding justice for the victim's family."

"Having this ability to solve and prosecute cases would significantly reduce the ability of criminals to get away with their crimes," added Amidon.

What ails our shuttlers?

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 08:00 PM PDT

2011/08/31
by Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz

Gone are the days when
the fresh-faced and
eager duo of Koo Kien
Keat (left) and Tan Boon
Heong steam-rolled all
who stood before them.

Gone are the days when the fresh-faced and eager duo of Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong steam-rolled all who stood before them.

IN the wake of the results of the recent World Badminton Championships in London, several issues were raised by certain quarters with regard to the underlying reasons for Lee Chong Wei's heartbreakingly narrow loss, and to a larger extent, the ongoing frustration with yet another meek capitulation from our top men's doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.

Chong Wei's titanic battle with Lin Dan at the Wembley Arena for the world crown seemed to suggest that the gap between the two foes has narrowed greatly to the extent that many no longer see the pre-dominance that Lin Dan seemed to hold over Chong Wei previously.

Some dyed-in-the-wool realists would say though, that no matter what we say to console ourselves over that defeat, our guy still lost.

The track record doesn't lie they'd opine, but any record is bound to be broken or can be improved upon.

Furthermore, it may actually not have a firm correlation with current or emerging form at all.

Such a record may well see a turning of the tide in due course, especially with such keenly hot competition between the two foes.

Lin Dan himself was even moved to declare, in a Chinese daily, that there's no point for the rest of the field to study videos of Chong Wei as they will still lose to him, such is his current form and capability.

As for him, it will be tough from now on and all he wants is to try to stay on top as best as he can.

Turning our gaze to Kien Keat-Boon Heong, what seems to be ailing them? Gone are the days when the fresh-faced and eager duo steam-rolled all who stood before them.

Then, as quickly as it came the other pairs seemed to have psyched them out.

Their ascendency stuttered badly and the air of invincibility had dissipated.

Some have mentioned lack of mental strength and a lack of speed and power as probable reasons.

At any rate I do not believe that the situation is irretrievable. When they were successful, what contributed to it? Surely our collective memory is not that short.

Lack of mental strength is often a diagnosis that seems to be all too easy to be dispensed by many observers.

If you might recall, I had mentioned how vital it is for an athlete to remain in top shape -- injury-free, stable of mind, body and spirit.

We have to also remember that athletes have a life outside sport. That factor has a major influence on their life within sport.

One might be surprised how easily this is forgotten -- not least by the athlete himself.

An athlete who is in firm control of his life and practises a lifestyle suitable to his sporting pursuits is an athlete who will have the best chance of being successful.

Then there is the external environment and the burden of high expectations.

Pressure should be a positive thing for athletes. They should embrace it joyfully as it will spur them to continuously improve themselves. But there are also pressures that distract -- the type that would ultimately be destructive.

At a conference two years ago I had listened to a lecture by an eminent sports psychologist, Professor Glyn Roberts, that confirmed a long-held belief of mine with regard to this matter.

He had spoken about the conflict between two opposite environments affecting an athlete's performance -- "performance outcome environment" and the other, "performance mastery environment".

In performance outcome, the emphasis is on achieving a publicly-declared target that is then relayed to the athlete.

In practice, coaches would do their best to work this up with their charges but it weighs heavily on their minds, often to the point of distraction.

It is a principle in mental training that distractions are negative and should be eradicated or avoided as much as possible.

Performance mastery, on the other hand, is the concentration on improving all the elements that go into an athlete's performance.

Shielding an athlete from the boardroom decision of outcomes such as medal targets should be an important role of the coach.

Being fully aware of the targets, he then focuses his athlete's complete attention to mastering the physical, mental, technical and tactical aspects to obtain the optimum level of performance.

Make no mistake, all athletes want to win. But they will be better served by mastering their performance, leaving the result to be a natural consequence of their confident and adept performance and smoothly-implemented plans.

As for Kien Keat and Boon Heong lacking speed and power, the coach himself hit the nail on the head when he was quoted that the pair's game has to have more speed and power.

Let's use an analogy to elucidate the seemingly subtle difference.

A sports car may be able to have a top speed of 280 km/h but if the driver doesn't exploit its fullest potential, then that reserve of speed and torque would be wasted.

Similarly, one can say that they lack speed or agility etc. but all these attributes, once achieved (and documented) would come to nothing if the technical and tactical aspects are not implemented to a commensurate intensity or matching level.

There is so much more to be said on the matter but at this juncture, let's allow the relevant authorities to have a good hard look at the evidence at hand and do the necessary ....all for the good of the nation.

Let's all celebrate the 54th anniversary of our nation's independence with renewed faith and hope for a better future in sport.

Pardika bides his time

WITH the big names of Malaysian diving basking in the limelight, Sarawak's Pardika Indoma is happy to quietly work his way through the ranks .

The 19-year-old, better known as the elder brother of Olympic-bound Pandelela Rinong, recently qualified for his first world-class final in the men's 10m platform at the recent World University Games in Shenzhen, suggesting bigger things to come from the Universiti Putra Malaysia student.

"I managed to be a lot more consistent and mentally focused throughout the competition and it paid off for me," said Pardika.

"It felt great to have made my first final in a top-level event and it certainly gives me more confidence to do well in the future," added Pardika, who earned praise from national diving coach Yang Zhuliang for his performance.

Pardika, who has been diving since he was eight, said he has never felt the pressure of having to match the accomplishments of Pandelela, who won three medals at the Universiade, or fellow Sarawakian Bryan Nickson Lomas, but was instead more focused on improving the difficulty level of his dives.

"She (Pandelela) has always been supportive of me and we always try to look out and keep each other motivated.

"I am proud of what she has been able to achieve and despite being her older brother, I am looking to follow in her footsteps,"

"Bryan, being two years older than me, is also someone I look up to and I hope to be as good as him when I am his age.

"My priority at the moment is to keep working hard in training and improve the difficulty level of my dives as that will determine how far I can go in my career as a diver.

"When competing in a world-class event, even a 500 score is not enough to guarantee a podium finish when it comes to a top class event," added Pardika.

While Bryan, Pandelela and Leong Mun Yee have the lofty heights of the Diving World Cup to look forward to, Pardika is hoping to clinch himself a spot in the Indonesia Sea Games squad later this year.

Flagging off Merdeka in 1Malaysia spirit

Batu Pahat district officer Abdul Razak Hassan placing a 'Jalur Gemilang' on a car during the campaign at Dataran Penggaram, Batu Pahat.

THE Jalur Gemilang flag is the most popular item adorning vehicles, government offices and commercial buildings in Johor over this month.

This proves that the spirit of Merdeka is very much alive. People take pride in being part of a nation that has achieved much in its 54 years of independence.

Such a display of patriotism is more significant in Johor.

The Merdeka-month celebration in the state is touted to be among the most nostalgic in the country because Johor is the birthplace of Umno. The party was instrumental in attaining independence from Britain.

This year, Merdeka Day coincides with two other major celebrations: Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the Mooncake Festival, thus signifying Malaysia's multiracial face.

Parit Yaani assemblyman Datuk Ng See Tiong said the triple celebration was a good thing as it would "triple" the merriment among the people on this important date in the country's history.

"Muslims nationwide are returning to their families to celebrate Hari Raya, while Chinese families are also holding family reunions to celebrate the Mooncake Festival.

"These festivals are perfect opportunities to promote unity among the races in the spirit of Merdeka," said Ng.

For Ng, Merdeka means remembering the contribution of the country's founding fathers.

"I hope the younger generation appreciates the unity which exists among the people in Malaysia. This unity is an asset, and it is the main reason why other countries respect Malaysia."

He said unity must be upheld for the sake of future generations.

People from all walks of life gathered to celebrate the country's history and its struggles for the rakyat. Campaigns promoting the flying of the Jalur Gemilang have been held throughout this month.

Tenggara MP Datuk Halimah Shadique said campaigns distributing flags to be fixed at homes and vehicles started more than two weeks ago in areas such as Bandar Tenggara and Taman Kota Jaya.

Halimah said her team had organised the distribution of some 5,000 flags to commemorate Merdeka.

"This Merdeka is special as Hari Raya coincides with it," she said.

Halimah said people were excited about getting the flags.

"I am so proud to see the patriotism of the people in my constituency," said Halimah.

She said her team carried out the campaign early so that people would be ready to celebrate Merdeka and Hari Raya.

State MIC chief Datuk K.S. Balakrishnan said many Hindu temples in the state would hold special prayers today to seek prosperity for the country.

"MIC has also been distributing flags to its party members and members of the public to promote the month-long celebration.

Balakrishnan, who is a former state executive councillor , said Malaysians should be proud of their tolerance towards one another regardless of race and religion.

"It is a trait unique to Malaysia. Where else could one find people of different races sitting together to share a meal?"

The Johor-level Merdeka celebrations will be held in Batu Pahat on Sept 10.

This would be followed by district-level celebrations the following day

It's still brisk business todate

SAADIAH Abdul Karim took a gamble when she decided to sell dates as her main product in Bandar Baru Uda.

This is because dates are thought to be popular only during the fasting month. However, much to Saadiah's delight, dates are sought all year round.

The 46-year-old, the owner of El Diya Enterprise which sells food products from the Middle East, said every day there would be people flocking to her store to buy packs of dates to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"Many of our consumers nowadays know how nutritious dates are. So, many eat dates for health reasons," she said.

Saadiah said before working at her Bandar Baru Uda store, she was running a kiosk selling dates at the Plaza Angsana shopping mall five years ago.

But she had to relocate when she had ran out of space to keep her stocks.

"The kiosk was too small and I couldn't house my supplies of dates anymore. So I shifted to my current store," she said, adding that although her shop had opened for barely a year, business is brisk.

Among the dates sold at her shop are dried Egyptian and Iranian dates. The dates are priced from RM10 per kg to RM150 per kg.

The most expensive dates are of the Aj-Jawa variety.

"These dates are usually bought by corporate companies during Ramadan to be distributed for charity. Hotels also buy them for breaking of fast functions," said Saadiah.

Other than selling dates, Saadiah also sells goat cheese, candies, coffee and chocolates.

Saadiah also offers gift packaging services for business clients and functions.

Many of her customers are Middle Eastern students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai. Her store is at Jalan Padi Emas 6/2.

He said police did not find the weapon, adding that the suspect could have been drunk.

"We also have another one of the victims with us and are in the midst of questioning him," he added.

Australian high court rules asylum deal with Malaysia unlawful

MELBOURNE -- The High Court has ruled unlawful the Australian government's Malaysian people swap deal.

The court's full bench handed down its decision on the lawfulness of the policy on Wednesday afternoon, the Australian Associated Press reports.

Chief Justice Robert French said the court ordered Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and his department to be restrained from sending asylum-seekers to Malaysia.

"The declaration made ... was made without power and is invalid," Justice French said.

The ruling is a blow for the Australian government, which had hoped the Malaysian refugee swap would be the deterrent it needed to halt the flow of asylum-seeker boats to Australia. - Bernama

US stocks rise on hopes of Fed action

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 07:41 PM PDT

NEW YORK: US stocks closed with modest gains on Tuesday after newly released minutes from the Federal Reserve's key policy committee raised hopes that the Fed would act to boost the ailing economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 20.70 points (0.18 percent) to close at 11,559.95.

The broader S&P 500 climbed 2.84 points (0.23 percent) to 1,212.92, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite jumped 14.00 points (0.55 percent) to close at 2,576.11.

After opening with losses, the markets crept upwards and closed higher after minutes of the August 9 meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee showed members discussing what to do if the economy continued to stall.

The committee has been deeply split between those who believe the Fed should further loosen monetary policy to juice the economy and those who fear that such steps would raise the risk of inflation.

The latest FOMC minutes suggested that opponents of stimulus were weakening their opposition in light of the disappointing condition of the US economy, said Marc Pado, chief US market strategist for Cantor Fitzgerald.

"Those that dissented were more in favour of doing something than they've ever been," said Pado.

"They were dissenting about what to do but not that it is needed to be done. They stand ready to act and the market wants to see support."

In the latest sign of US economic weakness, a survey by the Conference Board showed that consumer confidence plunged in August to its lowest level in more than two years.

In company news, Boeing shares gained 2.2 percent after the aviation giant launched an upgraded version of its popular 737 airplane powered by a more fuel-efficient engine and reported strong demand from airlines.

Bank of America shares sank 3.2 percent after a US government agency, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, challenged its proposed US$8.5 billion settlement aimed at resolving claims from the subprime-mortgage debacle.

The bank, whose stock is down more than 16 percent over the past month, was also hit with a lawsuit over an US$1.75 billion pool of mortgages, many of which went into default the US housing price bubble collapsed. -- AFP

STEEPED IN TRADITION

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 10:22 AM PDT

2011/08/29
By Ahmad Fairuz Othman and Syed Umar Ariff

After a month of fasting, Muslims in Johor celebrate the arrival of Syawal by strengthening ties with family and friends

THE Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration in Johor is a much-cherished festivity that is celebrated the end of Ramadan.

It is an opportunity for family and friends to come together and seek forgiveness from each other.

Guests are invited for "open house", a uniquely Malaysian tradition.

The merriment of Hari Raya can be felt weeks ahead of the big day.

In the days following the advent of Hari Raya, families are busy making preparations and shopping for baju Melayu, baju kurung, other clothes and shoes.

The air is filled with festive songs about balik kampung and reuniting with a loved ones at Raya. There are even songs about food and children playing firecrackers.

In kitchens, women, and a few men, toil away baking cookies and cakes; while the postmen sort out thousands of greeting cards.

In Johor Baru, a sure sign of Aidilfitri is when shopping malls like Plaza Angsana gets even more crowded as the celebration draws closer.

The road leading to the mall is reduced to a crawl as shoppers come from surrounding towns such as Muar, Batu Pahat and Ledang, and even Singapore.

Plaza Angsana is known as a one-stop centre for Hari Raya shopping. It has everything one needs for Hari Raya such as baju Melayu, baju kurung and baju kebaya to trendy ladies' and men's attire.

The mall also sells ketupat, lemang, traditional kuih, pineapple tarts and crackers such as the crunchy rempeyek.

Although such delicacies produced in factories are easily available, there are those who prefer to buy homemade cookies and kuih.

Maizatul Jaffar, 40, has transformed her passion for making cookies into a thriving business during festive seasons.

The former secretary to ex-Tanjung Puteri state assemblyman, Mohamad Kasbi, had to learn to bake cookies when she was 10 years old because her family could not afford to buy ready-made ones.

"My mother, Rajiah Muin, would buy the ingredients and asked me and my siblings to bake the cookies. She said if we wanted kuih raya, we had to make them ourselves.

"My siblings were not much help as I often ended up finishing what they started.

"That was how I learned to bake, and now I have a business supplying cookies and cakes," said Maizatul, who sells 30 types of cookies, and four types of kek lapis.

Because of the nature of her business, Maizatul has her hands full even during the first few days of Raya.

"Some of my suppliers drop by during the first day of Raya to collect their payment, while traders who sell my cookies come to pay me. It is business as usual for me during Raya. I only visit my relatives a week later."

However, Maizatul keeps to the tradition of performing solat sunat Aidilfitri and visits the graves of loved ones on the morning of Raya.

Maizatul also fulfills her obligation by paying the annual zakat fitrah or tithe which Muslims must pay before performing solat sunat Aidilfitri.

"I join my siblings and their children to pray at the Kampung Melayu Majidee mosque. We then visit my late father's grave before returning home for meal of ketupat and rendang."

It is after this meal that families such as Maizatul's gather to shake hands and ask for forgiveness from each other.

Children gleefully receive duit raya after kissing the hands of the elderly.

It is common to see children in villages going from house-to-house in groups to beraya and collect as much duit raya as possible.

Maizatul's niece, Fatin Shafiqa Mahadi, 21, is still receives duit raya from her parents because she is not working.

However, the diploma in physiotherapy student knows that receiving money is not what Hari Raya is all about.

For her, it is about strengthening family ties and getting together with relatives.

"My family and I spend the first two days of Raya at my aunt's place in Batu Pahat. We visit my grandparents' grave in the morning and all my relatives will adjourn to my aunt's for a family gathering."

Aishah Kamal, 21, who celebrates Hari Raya in Kampung Melayu Majidee, close to the heart of Johor Baru, has a slightly different way of ushering the first day of Syawal.

The civil engineering diploma student meets up with friends during her open-house visits and they proceed to the cineplex in town to catch a movie.

"Unlike other people, my family does not balik kampung as our relatives all live close-by.

"We celebrate Raya in the city. After visiting some open houses, my friends and I love to go downtown to do some shopping or catch a movie.

"You could say it is the city slicker way of celebrating Hari Raya," said Aishah.

Meanwhile, Singaporean Ariffin Ahmad, 32, who was doing his Raya shopping in Johor Baru, said he visits relatives in Johor Baru and Air Hitam during the first week of the Aidilfitri.

"I make it a point to visit my uncle in Johor Baru and my aunt in Air Hitam during the Raya season. They are both Singaporeans who married locals and now live in Johor."

Hold on, I can smell a toilet a mile away

AHMAD FAIRUZ OTHMAN

THE last time I wrote for this page, I spoke about cleanliness at Ramadan bazaars and how the lack of it could affect our health.

Now I want to touch on something a bit more nauseating -- filthy toilets. Those of you tucking into kuih raya at this time may want to put it down as the subject matter is quite gross.

We have seen them at one time or another. The stench emitting from these dirty toilets are enough to put off any sane person.

It is slightly easier if we discover a toilet in a large shopping mall or complex to be filthy. We can simply walk away and find another toilet on a different floor.

But what if we are faced with only one available toilet such as when we visit a park?

Recently, I followed a friend to the state National Registration Department (NRD) at Kompleks Kementerian Dalam Negeri, or Kompleks KDN in Taman Setia Tropika, Johor Baru.

There are eight government departments within the complex, among them being the NRD, Registrar of Societies, Immigrations, Customs, Film Control and Malaysian Civil Defence.

The complex is relatively new, being in operation for less than a year. My visit on Aug 18 to the sleek new building was only my second.

It was a shock to discover that the toilets on the ground floor of the main building were under repair.

A sign at the toilet entrance told visitors to use the mobile toilets located down a hill, in what looked like an outdoor assembly area.

To reach the facility, however, one had to get down the hill by walking down 17 steps, and traverse quite a bit of ground.

If one was unsure of the way, one needed only to sniff to pick up the "scent".

The stench led to the toilets, Two female workers were sitting outside, geared with with a barely filled bucket of water and toilet paper.

I assume the items were for the users as the mobile toilets provided nothing in the way of sanitation.

Hold it. No water? I have been to many mobile toilets in my lifetime, with some cleaner than others.

The cleanest was the one I used during the F1 concert in downtown Singapore last year.

Not only was there running water, there were many workers standing by to clean up after the users every few minutes or so.

Now back to Kompleks KDN. The six mobile toilets may have been the worst I have ever seen.

Not only did they stink, most of them were filled to the brim or overflowing with what could only be sewage.

The floor was wet and covered in grime and stains that left little to the imagination. In one of the toilets, toilet paper was strewn all over.

To be fair to the management of the complex, there was a big crowd the day of my visit. It was the final days before the Aug 21 deadline of the ministry's legalisation and amnesty exercise for foreign workers.

The exercise, known as 6P, has resulted in thousands of foreigners lining up, and occasionally camping, outside immigration offices nationwide to settle their documentation issues.

At Kompleks KDN, hundreds of foreign workers were queuing up or seated outside the state Immigration Department headquarters.

However, the company assigned to upkeep the cleanliness of public toilets at the complex had failed to anticipate and cope with the influx of visitors.

I am sure some system could have prevented the mobile toilets from ending up in such a deplorable state.

It further saddened me when, a week later, I visited the KDN Kompleks to find the condition of the toilets pretty much the same.

Although the huge crowds had disappeared, visitors were still required to use the mobile toilets as the complex toilets were still under repair.

Even the worker stationed at the toilets felt sorry for the more squeamish visitors nauseated to the point of retching at the sight of the filthy toilet bowls.

"Some of my co-workers fell sick after having to deal with the toilets every day," the worker said.

I suppose the cleaners had tried their best to keep the toilets clean, but something must have gone went wrong along the way.

Many visitors I saw shook their heads in disbelief upon opening the doors to the mobile toilets. Some walked away but others, like I, had to bear with it to answer nature's urgent call.

The episode left its mark. I swear the stink stuck to me for several hours after that.

One man accompanying his pregnant wife was disgusted by the lack of proper toilets.

"I can't believe that such a new and modern building can be without decent toilets," he grumbled while he waited for his wife.

Muslims celebrated Aidilfitri in joyous atmosphere

KUALA LUMPUR -- Muslims throughout the country celebrated Aidilfitri today in a joyous atmosphere with family and friends.

They performed prayers at mosques and then hosted "open house" at home for their relatives and friends.

The celebrations were all the more merrier as Aidilfitri this year fell on the eve of the nation's 54th anniversary of independence, which has houses, shops and business premises flying the national flag.

Many Muslims here had returned to their hometowns and villages to celebrate the festival, but those who stayed back attended prayers in the city and held open house as well.

Man celebrates Hari Raya behind bars in 3rd prison

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 09:45 PM PDT

GEORGE TOWN -- Imran is spending Hari Raya at the Penang Remand Prison for a drug offence -- but with a difference.

This is the third prison that the 34-year-old is celebrating the festive season while serving time for a drug offence.

"Currently, I am serving a six-year jail sentence at the remand prison. Previously, I was (serving time) in the Tapah Prison and before that, it was the Taiping Prison.

"In all three prisons, I served time for drug offences," he said when met at the remand prison.

This year, the prison authorities have allowed Imran and 14 other prisoners to meet visitors during the Hari Raya due to good behaviour.

The Perak-born is among 50 Muslim prisoners held at the Penang Remand Prison for various crimes.

Currently, the prison holds more than 600 inmates, including 125 prisoners. The rest are held under remand. -- Bernama

Dream over for Blade Runner

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 07:31 PM PDT

DOUBLE amputee Oscar Pistorius saw his world 400m dream extinguished yesterday as defending champion LaShawn Merritt eased into the final just a month after returning from a drugs ban.

The controversial South African 'Blade Runner', who runs with carbon fibre prosthetic running blades and was making history as the first amputee to compete at the worlds, finished last in his semi-final heat.

Pistorius received a huge cheer from the South Korean crowd and mouthed 'thank you' to the camera as he lined up to race but could not find the pace he needed, timing 46.19sec to finish 22nd out of 24 runners in the semi-finals.

"I would really have liked to have performed better tonight. My goal was to make the semi-final and I did that. It's been a great experience. Even if I had run faster tonight I wouldn't have made the final," said an upbeat Pistorius.

"I have a lot of respect for the guys who have made the final. It's been a great opportunity and I've learned a lot from this experience.

"I'm a realist so for me to make the final, well I wasn't running close to those times. I never had. This is the championship I have worked for for many years. It's been a massive blessing."

But it was a different story for Merritt, who appeared in awesome form in qualifying quickest in 44.76s, with what seemed to be plenty in reserve.

"It feels good to have qualified for the final and defend my title tomorrow. I have trained hard to come here and do what I am doing right now. I will give it all out on the track," he said.

"We shall see how the final unfolds. A medal is everybody's goal."

The issue of whether the blades give Pistorius, cleared three years ago to run against able-bodied athletes, an advantage is back in the spotlight following his qualification for the worlds in South Korea.

Pistorius, 24, had both legs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old because of a congenital condition that meant he was born without fibulae -- lower leg bones. -- AFP

Proton hold their own

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 07:31 PM PDT

IN front of a 300,000-strong crowd, Proton Motorsports demonstrated the pace and ability of the Satria Neo S2000 by scoring both drivers' and manufacturers' Intercontinental Rally Challenge points on the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, which ended on Sunday.

Proton are contesting this year's IRC alongside their hugely successful FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship programme, where the Satria Neo S2000 has won three of the four rounds so far this year.

The competition in last weekend's seventh IRC round was the toughest, with 29 of the world's fastest Super 2000 cars making the start among a total of 123 competitors.

Based in Zlin, the rally is known for attracting big crowds, but with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees for much of the event, the attendance hit a record-breaking 300,000 on the asphalt roads in the southeast of the Czech Republic.

Proton Motorsport drivers, double Junior World Rally champion PG Andersson and two-time European Rally champion Giandomenico Basso, were right in the thick of the action.

Unfortunately for Basso, a puncture ruined the Italian driver's hopes of taking points from the event, but Andersson (Sweden) was on exceptional form throughout to score.

Andersson ended the event in ninth place, less than 20 seconds behind local hero and former Ford World Rally Championship driver Roman Kresta, while Basso climbed to 13th having slipped to 18th after his puncture.

Buoyed by their burgeoning IRC pace, the Proton Motorsports team now head through Slovakia and into Hungary for the next round of the series, the Canon Mecsek Rally (Sept 9-11).

"I had a good feeling about the whole weekend and really enjoyed this rally.

"I liked the stages and we've also improved the car in the engine and the chassis. I feel that I know the car now and I can take it to the limit more and more. It's good." said Andersson.

The Czech rally was dominated by Skoda finishing in the top three positions with local driver, Jan Kopecky taking the top honours.

Out of 123 starters, 34 competitors failed to finish the gruelling rally which comprised 248.48km of competitive stages run over a total distance of 619.73km.
