Search & rescue resumes at landslide site

KUALA LUMPUR: The search-and-rescue operation resumed at 8am today at the site of a landslide at an orphanage in Hulu Langat near here although all the 25 victims have been accounted for.

This follow-up operation was being carried out by the police and the Fire and Rescue Department to ensure that no one else was trapped in the rubble of the landslide which hit Rumah Anak-anak Yatim dan Anak-anak Hidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa at the 14th mile, Hulu Langat, yesterday.

A non-stop search-and-rescue operation which began shortly after the landslide struck at 2.30pm yesterday ended some 15 hours later, at 5.30pm today, after the 16th body was recovered at 5.05am. Nine people were rescued from the rubble.

A check Bernama at the scene today found the situation calmer and more
controlled compared to yesterday when a huge crowd of people flocked there to
get updates on the tragedy.

All the access roads have also been reopened to the public. However, police
have cordoned off an area up to 500 metres from the scene with yellow tape to
prevent curious people from getting too close.

"We need to monitor the area because we fear there may still be soil movement," said a policeman at the scene.

The headmaster of the orphanage, Idris Musa, was seen in the area this morning but he declined to be interviewed.

Two lorries of a consumer goods manufacturer provided instant noodles, snacks and drinks to rescue personnel and reporters. - Bernama

List of names of the dead and injured in landslide tragedy

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- Following is the list of 25 people who were killed or injured in the landslide tragedy at Rumah Anak-anak Yatim dan Anak-anak Hidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa in Hulu Langat near here yesterday.

As at 5.30am, 16 people were confirmed dead and nine injured.

The rescue operation, which began at 2.45pm yesterday, was temporarily stopped at about 5.30am after the last body was recovered at 5.05am.

It resumed at 8am to ensure that no one else was trapped.

The following names were obtained from the mobile operations room at the

scene of the tragedy:
