EAGLES are not usually kept as pets but Rokiah Bakar, 55, has mastered a way to capture the birds and keep them at home.

The Kampung Air Papan Laut resident in Mersing has been luring the birds of prey, particularly sea eagles, by using specially-made traps.

The traps are normally used for jungle fowl but Rokiah has been setting them up around Tanjung Resang and Air Papan for the past 10 years.

She said the birds would fly lower when seeing such traps.

However, she said the eagles are only kept for a while and are later set free.

Rokiah's skill in catching eagle is well known among the residents, and has even caught the attention of the late Sultan Iskandar.

It was former Mersing district officer Datuk Dr Ibrahim Endan who had informed the late sultan about Rokiah's skill.

Being an animal lover, Sultan Iskandar had asked Rokiah to capture eagles that were often seen around the islands off Mersing.

"Eagles have wings that could span as long as 2 metres. Back then I was probably the first person to have captured an eagle to be given to the late sultan."

Rokiah said her son would sometimes help her by climbing trees to gather the eaglets.

"Capturing and rearing eagles without a licence is wrong.

"But I had obtained temporary permission from the district Wildlife and National Parks Department to do so.

"But now I have not captured any eagles as I have not seen them flying around the area."

A DAMAGED 10-metre stretch of embankment along Sungai Bentayan in Muar, has impeded the river flow.

Part of the embankment had collapsed into the river last month, and now loose pieces of rock and concrete are blocking part of the river.

The situation became worse following a three-hour downpour early last Sunday.

The first sign of damage occurred a month ago when part of the 10-metre stretch collapsed into the river following another heavy downpour.

A recent check showed that the concrete sidewalk and metal fencing have been damaged, and this poses a danger to traders and residents at the nearby row of shoplots.

A trader who wished to be known as Jim said if the problem was not solved quickly, a much worse fate could befall the traders.

"This cannot go on because it poses a safety hazard to traders and members of the public. I urge the authorities to take a look at the damage and take swift action to rectify it."

It was reported that the collapsed embankment near a row of shops was worrying traders at Jalan Maharani.
