Warring neighbours bury hatchet

A TWO-YEAR-OLD conflict between two neighbours in Taman Bukit Tropica, Johor Baru, came to an end recently, thanks to the help of the Johor Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) and the Johor Baru MCA Complaints Bureau.

Both the bureaus managed to persuade the complainant, Ng Chee Leng, 32, and defendant, Yong Nguong Ping, 43, to bury the hatchet, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between them at the PCB office in Wisma Komtar in Johor Baru.

It is believed that the problem started when Yong allegedly turned up the volume of his hi-fi set, even late at nights, and this had disturbed Ng's family from sleeping. Besides, Ng also complained about the alleged nuisance created by Yong's dogs as well as his water pump.

The hatred festered into a gravely sour relationship, with Yong
allegedly throwing a can of paint into Ng's house, and also ramming his car into Ng's gate.

Yong disputed Ng's claims that he rears the dogs with the intention of disturbing the neighbourhood.

The matter was brought to the attention of the PCB whose director, Marshal Thegarajah, said the bureau asked the Johor Baru MCA Complaints Bureau for help in resolving the dispute because of language barrier.

Ng, who is a contractor, and Yong, a technician, lodged a complaint at the PCB on May 29 to seek a resolution to the dispute.

"This is purely a misunderstanding which could have been resolved earlier if both parties had communicated with each other," said Tay.

Both Marshal and Tay expressed confidence that Ng and Yong would adhere to their pledge in the MoU to communicate their dissatisfactions over any future problems with each other, "in writing, telephone or face- to-face".

"We believe they would not use violence to resolve any future problems," said Marshal.

Marshal said the bureau receives about 10 complaints each year involving neighbourhood problems.

The majority of complaints, however, tend to be of government bodies.

As of May 31, the PCB has settled 616 out of 653 cases involving complaints against the public sector.

New Rela platoon in Muar

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 09:34 AM PDT

THE role of the People's Volunteer Force (Rela) have become more
challenging because they are not only responsible for helping to maintain and preserve the nation's security, but also to monitor local crimes.

In Muar, assistant Rela officer
Jamaluddin Ahmad said Rela was
established in 1972 with the aim of enabling the public to volunteer their help to maintain peace and harmony.

He said the roles have widened with efforts now required to handle the
influx of illegal immigrants, and Rela has been recognised as the third line of defence against any enemy and crime.
"Therefore, members must perform their duties with sincerity and honesty and must act swiftly by

reporting any activities that might threathen the country's security.
"This is in line with the government's aim to turn Rela into an
excellent voluntary force and a

contributor to the country's defence," said Jamaluddin at the launch of Rela 0020 Platoon in Kampung Tengah Mukim Sungai Terap in Pagoh, Muar, recently.
The launch was officiated by Sungai Terap/Sungai Raya district headman, Zaid Marzi Bohari, who represented Pagoh Umno Youth chief Ismail Mohamed. — By Rizalman Hammim
