The Photographic Society of Johor recently installed its new committee members at a Balinese themed resort in Senai

THE Photographic Society of Johor recently installed its new committee members for this year until 2013 in a ceremony at the Rina Balinese Resort in Senai, Johor.

Its newly installed president who is also the society's founder, Tang King Huat, 63, said five new members were installed last month.

Also present was guest of honour Datuk Mok Chek Hau, who presented a personal donation of RM3,000 to the society.

Tang presented a token of appreciation to Mok.

Tang said to date the society, founded in 1964, has about 700 members.

Its members, most of whom are hobbyists, come from all walks of life such as lawyers, doctors, businessmen, clerks and housewives.

"During my time we developed the black and white photos in the dark room, but today it is developed instantly using digital technology.

"It's amazing how far we have come in technology," he said.

The veteran photographer said photographers should use their skills to promote the country's beautiful parks and scenery, as well as its cultural heritage.

"I believe a picture paints a thousand words and with enough knowledge and skill, a photographer can bring out the essence of an object for the public to appreciate its beauty," he said.

Among amateurs in the society are also professionals who had participated and won medals in national and international photography contests.

A professional photographer from the society, Lek Kah Meng, 45, said the installation ceremony was held in a grand manner for the first time.

"The location was lovely with natural surroundings and the food was good," said Lek who bagged an award in the Korea International Photography Contest in 2004.

He added the resort was a haven for photographers as it had lush greenery, and beautiful birds and butterflies.

"It is a place to also relax and de-stress," he said.

His fellow member, Chiu Siew Thong, 43, from Senai, also won a bronze award last year in the 20th Daejeonilbo International Great Photo Contest.

About 50 of the society's members participated in a photography contest held that day using professional female models.

The results for the contest will be announced within the next few weeks.

MORE than 80 teams comprising 1,000 players from around Asia will take part in the Johor International Rugby Carnival 2011.

Organised by the Johor Rugby Union, the carnival touted as the biggest in the country will kick off at the Dataran Bandaraya in Johor Baru on July 9 and 10.

The carnival will feature two prestigious rugby tournaments in the same venue, namely the Asian Rugby Football Union 7's Under-20 (ARFU 7s) and the Iskandar Malaysia 10's Rugby Challenge 2011 (IMRC 2011).

The event co-organisers are the Johor government and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority, with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Malaysia Rugby Union and the Asia Rugby Football Union (ARFU).

ARFU 7s is the first edition of junior rugby tournament to be staged by the ARFU and the organising rights given to the Malaysia Rugby Union.

Johor will be the host for the tournament, and selected teams from Asian nations will be competing in the Under-20 category.

"This biggest rugby carnival will showcase Johor's long and proud history of playing rugby as a conduit for fostering unity as rugby players come from different racial backgrounds," said carnival chairman, Jais Sarday.

The tournament was the brainchild of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, when he was the Tunku Mahkota of Johor. — By Jassmine Shadiqe
