Biometric registration of legal foreign workers extended indefinitely

KUALA LUMPUR: The biometric registration of legal foreign workers scheduled to end on Sunday (July 31) has been extended indefinitely.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the programme would run in tandem with the registration of illegal foreign workers set to begin on Monday (Aug 1).

Najib says concept of tolerance alone cannot foster unity

ALOR STAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak urged the people yesterday to "move from tolerance to acceptance" to bring greater unity in Malaysia's multiracial society.

He said the concept of tolerance alone was insufficient to foster mutual understanding among the communities.

"In the practice of tolerance, there are still walls that create different emotions, dividing the people.

"However, this is different from the concept of acceptance.A stronger bond and better understanding would be achieved if we learn to accept and acknowledge each other, regardless of our races," he said during a meetthe- people session at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 in Jalan Kuala Kedah near here.

Najib likened unity among the people to that of a football team that had players in various positions on the field.

"Similar to a football team during a match, people from various communities work closely together to help the team to victory. However, the team would lose if one of us scores an own goal.

"The value of acceptance of each other, regardless of the colour of our skin or how we look, is important to help boost development of our country." Najib said the concept of democracy practised in Malaysia had been adopted since the country gained independence in 1957 and criticised those who accused the government of denying them this as groups blind to history.

Najib later announced RM1.1 million in financial assistance from the Federal Government to seven Chinese schools and an association of former Chinese school students.

Three private schools — Sekolah Menengah Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa and Sekolah Menengah Sin Min here—will receive RM200,000 each. Four Chinese vernacular schools—Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chio Min in Kulim, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 and Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa II — will each receive RM100,000.

The Keat Hwa Former Students Association will receive RM100,000.

The allocations are to upgrade the premises and organise more school activities.

Earlier, Najib visited Al-Rahmah mosque in Taman Wira, Mergong, where he was briefed on the extension work for the mosque by senior principal assistant director in the Implementation Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister's Department, Ab Ghapar Daud.

Construction of a new wing for the 20-year-old mosque, costing RM1.12 million, is funded by the Federal Government and would begin next month. This will increase the mosque's capacity from 1,000 to 1,800.

Najib later went on his walkabout at the farmers' market in the housing estate.
