KUALA LUMPUR: The RM1.08-billion Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) corruption trial involving former transport minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik began in the High Court here today.

The trial is being heard before High Court Judge Datuk Ahmadi Asnawi and it
is expected to hear the testimonies of 40 witnesses.

Dr Ling was charged on July 29 last year of cheating the Government of
Malaysia by misleading the Cabinet on a land acquisition for the mega
distribution hub project in Port Klang.

Dr Ling is alleged to have deceived the Cabinet into agreeing to the terms
of purchase between Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd (KDSB) and Port Klang Authority (PKA)

and giving its approval for the purchase.

cause wrongful losses to the government and despite being bound by a fiduciary
duty to protect the government.

The charge, under Section 418 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence
of seven years imprisonment or fine or both upon conviction.

Dr Ling faces an alternative charge of similar cheating for deliberately
concealing facts related to the project from the Cabinet.

The charge, under Section 417 of the Penal Code, is punishable by imprisonment of up to five years or fine or both upon conviction.

Dr Ling is alleged to have committed the offences between Sept 25, 2002, and
Nov 6, 2002 at the fourth floor of the Prime Minister's Office at the Perdana
Putra building in Putrajaya.

Dr Ling has pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Datuk Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah and Manoj Kurup

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation celebrated Warriors Day yesterday, honouring its heroes, past and present, and thanking them for the peace Malaysia enjoys today.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin led the celebrations at Dataran Merdeka, calling on all Malaysians to increase their sense of patriotism and the spirit of sacrifice for the country.

The king said the people were indebted to Malaysia's security forces for the sacrifices they made.

He asked the people to support them in any way possible, such as by making contributions to those who had retired or to the widows and children of those who had died in the line of duty in acknowledgement of their efforts.

Tuanku Mizan said the peace, safety and stability of the country was ensured thanks to the bravery and commitment of the security forces.

"The government has always given assistance to the families of the nation's security forces. Their welfare is always a priority."

The king also asked those in the security forces to never let their spirit waver and to perform their responsibilities and duties to the best of their ability in maintaining the safety of the country and its people.

Warriors Day is celebrated every July 31 in remembrance of the day when the Emergency was declared over in 1960. It was celebrated for the first time on Aug 4, 1968.

This was the second year Warriors Day was held at Dataran Merdeka. Previously, the celebrations were held at Tugu Negara.

A light shower did not stop the men and women of the nation's armed forces and police, as well as a small contingent of retired security forces personnel, from mounting a parade.

Spectators were also treated to a sajak rendition, spectacular band procession, choir singing and a staging of the Bukit Kepong incident to show the courage and dedication of the police in the battle against the Communists in the days before Merdeka.

Present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and Armed Forces chief Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin,

A group from the police commando unit re-enacted a battle fought on Sept 3, 1975, in Hulu Perak, where a communist enemy camp was detected and destroyed.

Assistant Superintendent Mohd Zabri Abdul Hamid, who led the platoon, was killed in the incident when he bled to death after stepping on a booby trap.

A total of 10 retired VAT 69 commandos who fought alongside Zabri at the time were honoured with a special remembrance tribute witnessed by Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah during the event held at the General Operations Force base in Ulu Kinta near here.

They were Ahmad Dahalan Hashim, Hamzah Hashim, Sallehuddin Omar, Ibrahim Che Mat, Mohd Noor Razak, Wantaha Wan Muhammed, Abdul Ghani Mahmud, Suhaimi Shafie, Abdul Rahman Sahat and Abu Seman Hassan.

Present were Raja Di Hilir Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Both are honorary first admirals of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

Earlier, Raja Nazrin inspected a guard of honour, made up of 25 detachments which comprised 750 members from various units of the police and armed forces.

The event also included a reading of a poem by retired Major Mohamed Awang entitled "Pahlawan Ku" (My Warrior) and sounding of the Last Post and The Rouse.

In Shah Alam, Bernama reports that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor laid a wreath at the Selangor State Monument.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, 11th Infantry Brigade commander Brig Gen Datuk Md Azman Rosli and Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan also laid wreaths at the monument.

State executive councillors and State Secretary Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi were also present.

In Kota Kinabalu, the event was held at the multipurpose hall of the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas instead of the monument in Taman Ujana Rimba Tropika.

More than 1,000 members of security forces and other uniformed personnel attended the event where Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin inspected a guard of honour outside the hall.

A pantomime by the Royal Malay Regiment was held at the event, also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin, who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, and several state ministers.

In Malacca, the event was held at Dataran Seri Negeri and was attended by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
