FIVE bowlers in the national squad will sacrifice their Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations with loved ones.

They have to compete in two tournaments to prepare for the 2011 Sea Games in Indonesia.

Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Dayang Khairuniza Dhiyana Abang Jamalidon and Siti Shazwani Ahmad Suhaimi together with Wendy Chai and Sin Li Jane will be competing in the PBAP Bevida-Storm International Classic Open in the Philippines on Aug 24-31.


Meanwhile, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi and Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani are down to compete in the World Women's Championship in Hong Kong on Sept 3-12 together with Esther Cheah, Sharon Koh, Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore and Li Jane.

The two tournaments are part of the squad's preparations for the Sea Games on Nov 11-22.

Siti Safiyah, 21, said though she will miss Aidilfitri celebrations with her family and friends, it will not affect her concentration or spirit.


"It is a difficult experience (to celebrate Hari Raya without family members) but this is part of the challenges expected when representing the country," said Siti Safiyah.

"I am happy to have been selected as I hope to make an impact on the competition."

Siti Shazwani, the defending champion in the tournament to held at the Pearl Bowling Centre in Manila, hopes to retain the title although no specific target has been set for the team. -- Bernama

MALAYSIA brushed aside Hong Kong 5-0 in their opening group match at the World University Games (Universiade) yesterday.

Mixed doubles Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Cheah Liek Hou routed Hong Kong's So Kachun-Leung Kinyan 21-14, 21-13 in the opening match.

Zulfadhli Zulkiffli also had an easy time against Cheng Kinman, taking only 30 minutes to win 21-14, 21-6.


Julia Wong took a while longer to find her rhythm, losing the first set 20-22 to Yeung Hiutung, but came back strongly to win the next two games 21-9, 21-11.

Men's doubles Liek Hou and Loh Wei Sheng bundled out Chow Juen-So Kachun 21-12, 21-18 in 29 minutes.


Julia and Amelia then paired up for the women's doubles to trounce Ko Tszmei-Yeung Hiutung 21-15, 21-9.

Malaysia were playing Indonesia in their second group tie in a late match yesterday.
