Recent photography competitions showcased the beauty of Johor Baru's common sights

Photographic Society of Johor secretary Kee Jwee Hiong said Johor Baru is full of picturesque scenes worth capturing on camera.

"Once I snapped some photos of Danga Bay and posted them online. Some viewers thought the pictures were taken at Sydney Harbour!" said Kee.

"I disagree with Malaysian photographers who believe places abroad are more attractive than those in their country.

"I believe one can turn anything into something beautiful by using one's imagination," said the photography lecturer.

Kee added the recent The Scenery of Admiral Cheng Ho's Expedition and Its Impact on Asia competition held at Sutera Mall was a platform for potential photographers to test their skills.

It was open to secondary school students and the public, with altogether 36 amateur photographers from all over Johor taking part in the open category.

The competition was held in conjunction with the closing of the month-long exhibition. Participants were required to take pictures of the exhibition.

The first and third prize winners went to photography enthusiasts Lim Li Kwong, 45, and his wife Tai Siew Then, 42, respectively.

Lim took home RM1,000 and a trophy, while Tai won RM500 and a trophy.

The second prize went to Photographic Society of Johor member Lek Kah Meng, 44, who won RM800 and a trophy. Lek, also an avid photographer, said he did not plan much before shooting his picture.

"I was suddenly inspired to base my photo on the 1Malaysia theme," he said.

Two of the panel of judges were from Johor Baru. The third was a Singaporean.

Photographic Society of Johor president Tang King Huat said the society encourages photographers to promote Johor and its rich history and culture to the world.

Another photography contest, Photo-Kopi@Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, was held at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee about the same time as the The Scenery of Admiral Cheng Ho's Expedition and Its Impact on Asia competition was being held.

The first prize went to photography enthusiast Tan Chong Meng, 53, from Johor Baru. He bagged RM600 and a certificate of merit, while the first runner-up was Lim Siew Tien, 27, from Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Baru. Lim took home RM400 with a certificate of merit.

Third prize winner Lim Xiao Tian, 22, from Simpang Renggam won RM300 and a certificate of merit.

THE Muar branch of the Immigration Department has been taken to task for the poor management of its ongoing exercise to register foreign workers.

Member of parliament for Bakri, Er Teck Hwa, said he visited the branch office for four days last week and found the situation not improved.

Er said he had proposed to the department to set up mobile units to register the foreign workers at their factories.

"When the Immigration officers allocated the queue numbers to the foreign workers, the latter should be informed when would be their turns.

"Currently, they wait for hours, some even sleeping on the verandah in front of the department or in a tent set up by the department," he said, when met in front of the department where about 500 foreign workers were waiting to be registered last Friday.

Er proposed that more counters for registration be set up.

"Currently, the department has three counters with registration machines."

He said many workers went to the Malacca Immigration Department instead as they could be registered on the same day.

Er said a queue display should be installed at the ground floor of the Muar Immigration branch to let foreign workers know how long they need to wait.

"At present, a Rela officer would announce the numbers through a loud-speaker."

Er said he had met a senior duty officer of the department, Abdul Latif Abu Bakar, who informed him that the department was registering an average of 1,000 workers daily.

Er also regretted that no policemen were on hand to ensure an orderly crowd and smooth registration.

A furniture factory owner from Jorak, Pagoh, Tay Soon Heng, 40, said he was at the department at 9am last Thursday but had to wait for a long time to be given the queue numbers for his 50 workers.

"They were finally registered after a five-hour wait."

State Immigration Department director Nasri Ishak said it would look into the problem and Er's suggestions were being considered.

He said the department had two mobile units that visit factories which have over 500 foreign workers.

"However, the units visit factories which have made prior arrangements with us.

"Employers, alternatively, can register their foreign workers at Immigration branches in Segamat, Batu Pahat or Kluang."
