BP Mall's management decided to make its fire drill more interesting by staging a 'robbery-in-progress'

BP Mall recently held a fire drill which saw the participation of its management staff and tenants.

The drill also saw the participation of the Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the Batu Pahat Hospital.

BP Mall central manager Danny Tan said the mall is committed to the safety and security of staff, tenants and visitors of the mall.

"Besides fulfilling the requirements for the licence from the Fire and Rescue Department, the drill also helps us to improve on previous drills and ensure that all fire prevention procedures are proper and equipment in good working condition.

"I also hope that the drill would enable our emergency response team (ERT) to improve its skills and knowledge when faced with emergencies," said Tan.

The management of the mall decided to make the drill more interesting by staging a "robbery-in-progress" as "fire" broke out at the premises.

"We have tenants such as jewellery outlets and retails shops which can become targets for robbers, so we need to be prepared for such instances too.

"Our ERT has to be prepared for all manner of emergencies.

"So, we threw in a "robbery" in the drill to prepare our ERT should a robbery occur," said Tan

Tan said the drill owes it success to the support and cooperation of all parties, including staff, tenants and the emergency services.

"I would like to convey our gratitude for their cooperation and hard work," added Tan.

On hand to witness the drill were Batu Pahat Municipal Council president Abdul Rashid Ismail and representatives from the Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the Batu Pahat Hospital.

Rashid said such drills are important as they give opportunities for the building management to test the effectiveness of its building's fire prevention equipment and procedures.

He said fire drills are important because it is vital for employees and tenants of buildings to know what needs to be done when faced with emergencies.

"Although the owners or managers of buildings are not required to hold fire drills, such drills best prepare people in a building in case of a fire. Also, through such drills, the management would be better able to coordinate its actions with the emergency services so that it can safely evacuate the building," said Rashid.

He said organising such a drill would also help to increase the confidence of tenants and visitors of the mall as it shows that the management is committed to ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants.

Roger Van Damme will be sharing recipes of his favourite high-tea treats.

LANGKAWI : Over four days this October as part of its inaugural Visiting Chef Series, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi will present one of Europe's foremost patissiers (pastry chefs), world champion chef Roger Van Damme, who will conduct hands-on, interactive classes on mastering the art of fine pastry.

He will share recipes of his favourite high-tea treats as he creates a new Asian-inspired dessert infused with flavours of exotic Asian spices, fruits and flower s.

A master of aesthetics, taste and textures, Van Damme takes desserts to a whole new level of sweet pleasures using pr eci se measurements of ingredients and techniques to perfect his pastry d e l i g h t s.

He has distinguished himself as one of the most innovative Belgian patissiers (pastry chefs) — he clinched the title, Chef of the Year by Gault Millau last year, and the eminent Michelin Star this year.

He trained at the celebrated Ter Groene Poort culinary school in Bruges, Belgium, and soon after graduation, Van Damme embarked on his life-long dream when he started to work for Huize Van Wely, one of the most famous dessert makers in the Netherl a n d s.

Today a dream location for food lovers the world over, the historical botanical herb garden in the heart of Antwerp is the beautiful backdrop for Van Damme's cosy restaurant Lunch Lounge Het Gebaar, where he and his wife and their team c r e at e dessert delights that surprise with exquisite flavours and s c e n t s.

A celebrity chef, Van Damme began his own television show at Njam.tv last year and launched his own cookbook, Desser ts, which made No. 2 on the bestseller list after just one week.

Possessing inimitable talent and creative flair, he enjoys experimenting and creating inventive and refreshing new desserts, preserving the harmony of taste throughout.

Influencing his dessert style are his friends Sergio Herman and Albert AdriĆ , the dessert maestro of El Bulli. With imagination as his guide, this pastry genius who is dedicated to continual innovation constantly challenges and enriches the palate with his sweet t e m p t at i o n s.

Over three master classes from Oct 26 to 29 at the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi's signature Italian restaurant, Serai, Van Damme will impart some of his secrets in making perfect pastry — infusing flavours, improving texture, and heightening natural flavours. The three-hour classes will close with a sumptuous daily afternoon tea. To end on a sweet note, a gourmet four-course dinner featuring Van Damme's sweet indulgences will be held at Serai restaurant on Oct 29.
