Asylum seekers to reach Christmas Island today

MELBOURNE: The first boatload of asylum seekers earmarked for Malaysia under a refugee swap deal is expected to reach Christmas Island today.

The Australian Associated Press said the authorities will tell the 54 asylum seekers that they will be sent to Malaysia to join 90,000 others seeking refugee resettlement.

A Malaysian police delegation is due to arrive on Christmas Island for briefings the same day, The Age newspaper reported.

It is believed that 10 to 20 asylum seekers could be transferred to Kuala Lumpur as soon as Sunday, the paper said.

Under the agreement, Australia will send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia in exchange for 4000 processed refugees. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was discharged yesterday from Kuala Lumpur Hospital where he had undergone arthroscopic surgery on the left knee.

Najib, who was accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, left the hospital about 12.30pm.

He waved to members of the media who had waited for him.

Najib hurt his knee at a sports event.
