Thousands throng Muhyiddin Aidilfitri open house

PAGOH -- Thousands of people thronged the open house of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and wife Datin Noorainee Abdul Rahman today at Seri Pekembar Complex, here.

Among those present were MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, his son Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Chua Tee Yong and local Barisan Nasional leaders.

The open house, from 9am to 3pm, began with the raising of the national flag Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with the 54th National Day, followed by the reading

of the Rukun Negara pledge and the singing of patriotic songs.

Dr Chua said the Aidilfitri this year was special because it coincided with the independence day.

"This certainly strengthens multiracial unity and truly reflects the 1Malaysia spirit," he said. -- BERNAMA

Australian high court rules asylum deal with Malaysia unlawful

MELBOURNE -- The High Court has ruled unlawful the Australian government's Malaysian people swap deal.

The court's full bench handed down its decision on the lawfulness of the policy on Wednesday afternoon, the Australian Associated Press reports.

Chief Justice Robert French said the court ordered Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and his department to be restrained from sending asylum-seekers to Malaysia.

"The declaration made ... was made without power and is invalid," Justice French said.

The ruling is a blow for the Australian government, which had hoped the Malaysian refugee swap would be the deterrent it needed to halt the flow of asylum-seeker boats to Australia. - Bernama
