GREEN GUIDE FOR KIDS

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 09:40 AM PDT

Over 400 pupils under UEM Land-UKM Green School Programme will learn to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle

WITH climatic changes becoming a global problem, the younger generation is being groomed to spearhead future green initiatives, creating better awareness and understanding on the need to protect the environment.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said schools can assist in the initiatives by inculcating "Green Awareness Lifestyles" which are in their school curriculum for pupils.

"This initiative by children can help create awareness among parents, to fellow pupils and also their communities around them," he said at the recent launch of the UEM Land-UKM Green School Programme for the company's 10 Pintar primary schools involving more than 400 Year Four and Year Five pupils from Kota Iskandar in Nusajaya.

"They are the ones who will continue in their efforts to save our earth."

Present at the event were UEM Land Holdings Bhd managing director and chief executive officer and Datuk Wan Abdullah Wan Ibrahim and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) vice-chancellor, Prof Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin.

Among the schools that participated were SK Sultan Abu Bakar, SK Nusantara, SK Kampung Pulai, SK Nusa Perintis 1, SK Ladang Pendas and SK Tanjung Kupang.

Ghani, who was guest-of-honour, said the selection of children for the programme was suitable as being young, they can be easily molded for activities involving the reduction of greenhouse gases.

He said the UEM Land-UKM Green School Programme has the potential to educate schoolchildren to be responsible citizens in promoting a green lifestyle throughout their lives.

On a separate note, Ghani, said more than a million trees have been planted in Johor during the past 10 years in the state government's bid to carry out green initiatives and contribute to the overall quality of life.

"This statistic on tree-planting did not include forest trees which were planted in city parks under the jurisdiction of local authorities since 2001.

"Besides replanting campaigns, the state government stipulates that every housing development project allocates at least 10 per cent of its land mass for planting trees.

Ghani said the state government was serious in creating a green environment to improve the quality of life of people in Johor, as it would indirectly address the problem of greenhouse emission.

"I believe that community involvement, particularly those that involve school-going pupils are among the methods that can save the world's climate," he said.

In his speech, Wan Abdullah said the programme has seen a composting initiative that was introduced this year to teach pupils the importance of responsible solid waste disposal and its advantages to the environment.

"Following its success, the programme is now used as a model for adoption by other primary schools in the country under the Pintar programme,'' he said, adding that the UEM Land-UKM Green School Pogramme was developed based on the concept of "smart and caring living", which was one of the key tenets of Nusajaya Environment Master Plan.

The event was held in collaboration with UKM under its Pintar (promoting intelligence, nurturing talent and advocating responsibility) programme. It is part of the Green School Project, an ongoing effort at educating, training and empowering teachers, pupils and UEM Land's volunteers with knowledge and skills on environment conservation.

The Pintar programme was launched in December 2006 and to date, UEM Land Holdings has adopted 17 schools here under the programme.

Registration poser delays youth programmes

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 09:27 AM PDT

CONFUSION over the registration status for the Taman Aman Belia 4B branch in Senai is causing programmes it has planned for the neighbourhood's youths to be delayed.

Branch adviser Norhazman Hasbullah said he and other members are dumbfounded as to why the registration status of their branch was still pending.

The members claimed they followed correct procedures when they submitted their registration form to the Youth and Sports Ministry to register their branch. However, he said he was told by a ministry representative that their registration form had not been sent to the ministry.

Norhazman claimed to have received a letter from the ministry confirming that their registration form was in the latter's hands.

"It is strange how the ministry has already issued a confirmation letter stating they had received our registration form. If that is the case, why do they say the form was not sent? If there was any problem with our registration, they should have replied to us promptly so that we could rectify the matter."

Norhazman said because of the uncertain status of the Belia 4B branch, many of their programmes could not be carried out.

He said many residents hoped the problem would be settled soon to allow youth programmes to be held in the neighbourhood.

"The government's policy to see the youths getting involved in associations will not become reality if problems such as ours continue to occur."
