East coast KTM intercity service disrupted

KUALA LUMPUR: The east coast KTM Intercity service was disrupted early today when the Tumpat-Woodlands Senandung Timuran Express train derailed between the Krambit and Jerantut line. No casualties were reported.

A Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Berhad statement said the incident involved
coach Number 27 which derailed at KM196.75 at 3.08 am. Repair works are expected to be completed by 2 pm today. Due to the accident, passengers on the Wau Express between Kuala Lumpur and Tumpat were affected and had to disembark at the Jerantut station and continue their journey to Tumpat and other stations by bus.

The Kuala Lipis-Woodlands and Woodlands-Gemas shuttles were cancelled. "Thirteen buses were organised to transport the 450 passengers affected," said KTM. The public can contact 1-300-88-5862 for further information. -- Bernama

Terengganu to resume construction of stalled Sungai Pinang bridge

KEMAMAN: The state government will resume the construction of the Sungai Pinang bridge that was stalled since over a decade ago.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said the federal government had set
aside an additional allocation of RM8.5 million to get the bridge project going,
connecting Chukai with Air Putih and surrounding villages and is expected to

benefit 20,000 people.

"Construction is expected to start early next year and to be completed in

two years," he said after visiting the homes of villagers affected by the recent
floods, here.

He added that the previous bridge was built too low and had been frequently
submerged in water during flooding.

The state government also plans to increase the elevation of the road from
Kampung Paya Pamam leading up to the bridge so it would remain passable even if
there were floods in the area.

The road would also serve as an alternative route from Kampung Air Putih to
Ibok, via Mardi Pasir Gajah road, before heading towards Chukai, he said. -- Bernama
