Call to rural communities to help safeguard the environment

JULAU, Sarawak: Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang today advised the rural communities in Sarawak to play their role in safeguarding the environment.

Salang, who is deputy minister of information, communications and culture, said they should stop treating rivers as rubbish dumps, refrain from felling trees along river banks and never use chemicals to fish.

He said this at the closing of a "Friends of the Environment" programme for community leaders and students at SMK Julau here. The text of his speech was read out by his senior private secretary, Danny Bungan.

Salang also said that the people should adopt environment-friendly technology like energy-saving bulbs in their homes, schools and offices, and prefer to use reusable bags when shopping. -- BERNAMA

Najib: My daughter was not even in Australia

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has tweeted a denial over an Australian news report that his wife and daughter had shopped excessively during his visit to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Perth recently.

Najib, who is in Mecca to perform the haj, replied to a question in a tweet by @LawRyan34 posted on Wednesday.

The tweet was: "@NajibRazak according to news, your lovely wife purchased a neckless worth a whopping 150k. Your daughter spend bout 60k."

The prime minister replied on the same day and said, "@LawRyan34 ....Don't believe n spread lies. My daughter was not even in Australia n my wife did not buy any jewellery."

The reply came on the heels of the publication of an article in The West Australian newspaper, which stated that Najib's daughter was believed to have spent a whopping RM180,000 (A$60,000) in David Jones, a high-end department store at a shopping centre in Perth, the venue of the CHOGM gathering.

The same report also stated that "one first lady" purchased WA pearls worth RM450,000 (A$150,000), but did not name the person.

The Malaysian consulate-general in Perth had said the allegation against Najib's daughter was not true. Consul-general Hamidah Ashari, in a letter to The West Australian's editor on Tuesday, had said her office was appalled upon reading the article "Delegates go shopping, sightseeing" published in the Oct 31 issue.

She said Najib's daughter was not part of the prime minister's delegation attending CHOGM, nor was she in Perth at that time.

The prime minister's political secretary, Datuk Fatmi Che Salleh, had also said the article was incorrect.
