Ringgit opens lower versus US dollar

Posted: 02 Apr 2013 06:46 PM PDT

The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar in early trading today, driven by lack of demand for the local currency amid the favourable economic outlook in the US, dealers said.

At 9am, the ringgit was quoted at 3.0910/0930 from 3.0865/0895 at
yesterday's close.

A dealer said investors' interest in the greenback was spurred after reports of new orders for manufactured goods rose three per cent in February, topping expectations of a 2.6 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, the local currency was traded higher against other major currencies.

The local note opened slightly higher against the Singapore dollar at 2.4937/4956 from 2.4939/4966 on Tuesday and strengthened against the Japanese yen to 3.3024/3063 from 3.3142/3192 yesterday.

The ringgit rose against the British pound to 4.6622/6661 from 4.6955/6010 and appreciated against the euro to 3.9580/9612 from 3.9643/9691 previously.-- Bernama
