KL shares open higher Friday

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia opened higher in early trading today, supported by mild buying interest, dealers said.

At 9.01am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 2.59 points better at 1,769.31, after opening 1.8. points higher at 1,768.55.

Market breadth was positive, with 90 gainers, 45 losers, 96 counters unchanged, 1,369 untraded and 16 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 33.032 million shares worth RM13.51 million.

HwangDBS Vickers Research said Wall Street was down last night, with Key US equity indices slipping between 0.2 per cent and 0.5 per cent at the closing bell as sentiments were dented by weak economic data.

"This could put added pressure on Malaysian equities today," it said.

Following a 16.3 point or 0.9 per cent decline yesterday, the research house expects the benchmark FBM KLCI to ease a bit more ahead, possibly retreating towards the immediate support line of 1,750.

On the scoreboard, the Finance Index slid 1.439 points to 16,688.14, but the Industrial Index fell 2.29 points to 3,026.30, while the Plantation Index rose 18.919 points to 8,208.02.

The FBM Emas Index gained 14.74 points to 12,256.28, while the FBMT100 improved 15.171 points to 12,047.69, and the FBM Mid 70 Index added 7.85 points to 14,052.75.

The FBM Ace Index rose 21.85 points to 4,636.07.

Among actives, Luster Industries inched down a sen to 15.5 sen, Hubline-Warr was flat at two sen, Luster Industries-Warr shed half-a-sen to 11 sen while Ingenuity Consolidated added a sen to 12.5 sen.

Heavyweights, Maybank and CIMB fell two sen each to RM10.00 and
RM8.32, Axiata added two sen to RM6.93 while Sime Darby was flat at RM9.50.-- Bernama

Ringgit opens higher versus US dollar

The ringgit rebounded in early trading against the US dollar Friday on renewed buying interest after recent losses, dealers said.

At 9am, the local unit was quoted at 3.0090/0120 to a greenback from yesterday's 3.0130/0160 close.

Meanwhile, the ringgit was traded mostly lower against other major currencies.

The local currency appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.4026/4057 from 2.4058/4084 on Thursday but fell against the yen to 2.9434/9462 from 2.9395/9430 yesterday.

The ringgit also weakened against the British pound to 4.5959/6002 from Thursday's 4.5813/5867 and depreciated against the euro to 3.8756/8788 from 3.8747/8789 yesterday.-- Bernama
