KL shares open lower in early trading

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia opened lower in early trading today following losses on the Wall Street, weighed down by
ongoing concerns over the US economic recovery, dealers said.

At 9.13am, the benchmark index lost 0.93 of a point to 1,770.44 after opening 0.08 of a point lower at 1,771.29.

Losers beat gainers 115 to 95, with 157 counters unchanged, 1,243 untraded and 16 others suspended.

Trading stood at 107.03 million shares worth RM46.2 million.


HwangDBS Vickers Research said as the budget impasse drags on, which is threatening to hurt the economy amid the partial shutdown of the US government, Wall Street slipped further last night.

At the closing bell, its key stock indices were down between 0.9 per cent and 1.1 per cent.

"The weak external vibes are expected to put pressure on Malaysian equities today. Consequently, the benchmark FBM KLCI could slide towards the immediate support level of 1,750," it said in a research note today.

Meanwhile, the research house said stocks that could add interest today include Alam Maritim, which has been awarded a RM22 million contract to provide a anchor handling tug vessel.

On the scoreboard, the Industrial Index lost 1.58 points to 3,052.64, the Finance Index fell 16.7 points to 16,452.75 while the Plantation Index rose 0.24 of a point to 8,300.36.

The FBM Emas Index fell 5.54 points to 12,309.61, the FBM100 Index was 4.89 points lower at 12,047.59.

The FBM Ace added 19.95 points to 5,474.61 and the FBM 70 rose 0.18 of a point to 14,020.17.

Among actives, The Media Shoppe gained half-a-sen to 16.5 sen, Luster Industries was flat at 9.5 sen and China Automobile added 3.5 sen to 37 sen.

Of the heavyweights, Maybank improved two sen to RM9.84, Axiata and Sime Darby was each flat at RM6.91 and RM9.54, respectively.-- Bernama

KLCI futures traded lower in early session

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) futures contracts on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives were traded lower in early session today.

At 9.46am, spot month October 2013 lost five points to 1,773.5, November 2013 fell 5.5 points to 1,773, December 2013 erased 4.5 points to 1,774, while March 2014 stood at 1,778.

Turnover stood at 1,226 lots while open interest totalled 40,257 contracts.

The underlying FBM KLCI was 0.22 of a point better at 1,771.59 after 46 minutes of trading.-- Bernama
