Football: Malaysia cruise past Myanmar Posted: 18 Jun 2011 04:52 PM PDT Malaysia's Baddrol Bakhtiar (left) tries to get past a Myanmar player in their match at the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium yesterday. — Picture by Zaman Huri Isa National coach K. Rajagobal gave Kelantan midfielder Shakir Shaari his international debut while striker Abdul Hadi Yahya, who scored on his Malaysia debut against Hong Kong, started upfront alongside Baddrol. With the match played on a water-logged pitch after heavy rain lashed Kota Baru, few chances were created although Myanmar twice threatened to score in the ninth and 24th minutes when goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli failed to claim two low crosses.
Malaysia finally went ahead in the 28th minute after mistakes by Myanmar defenders saw the ball fall kindly to Amirulhadi Zainal in the box and the Selangor winger made no mistake with a low effort. Helmi was again Malaysia's saviour when he deflected a goal-bound Myanmar shot wide in the 41st minute before Malaysia made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break.
Baddrol proceeded to squander two more chances as Malaysia dominated the second half as defender Aidil Zaquan Radzak suffered a worrying injury before rookie goalkeeper K. Sasikumar earned his first cap with two minutes remaining. |
