Football: Ismail set to fill Safiq void Posted: 25 Jul 2011 05:32 PM PDT 2011/07/26 ISMAIL FARUQI ASHARI Ismail, 25, was initially not part of national coach K. Rajagobal's plans but received a late call-up to boost Malaysia's midfield in the recent friendly against Liverpool. His impressive performance in that match earned Ismail his first international cap at last weekend's 5-3 defeat to Singapore in the away first leg.
The Manir-born player, however, missed a gilt-edged chance to score in the 29th minute before being replaced by Amirul at half time. Ismail, who stands at 1.68 metres, may be the shortest player in the squad but he is not afraid to take on physically bigger opponents.
"I decided on starting him in the first leg after watching his style of play against Liverpool. What I like about him is that he is enterprising on the ball." Rajagobal named Ismail, K. Gurusamy and Shakir Shaari as the three possible options to fill the void left by Safiq, who was sent off on Saturday.
Ismail expressed his delight when told he was one of the players being considered to fill Safiq's shoes in central midfield. "I never once thought I would be good enough to represent the country. I will give my best if selected again. It was a memorable experience to finally earn my first cap against Singapore but I am unhappy as we lost," said Ismail. Ismail has represented Terengganu in the M-League since 2006 and this season, scored three goals from 22 matches to help the East Coast side finish second to Kelantan in the Super League. Football: Aidil Zafuan boost for Rajagobal Posted: 25 Jul 2011 05:24 PM PDT Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak's (front) return is timely as coach K. Rajagobal needs an experienced player in defence. — Picture by Osman Adnan Aidil Zafuan, who aggravated his ankle injury before last weekend's 5-3 first leg defeat to Singapore, went through training with ease at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday. "I am happy to be back in training. My ankle did not give me any problems. I guess I am ready to play on Thursday," said Aidil.
Aidil Zafuan's return is timely as coach K. Rajagobal needs an experienced player in defence, especially in the centre. If all goes well, the Negri Sembilan player, who is also a free kick specialist, will replace centreback Muslim Ahmad on Thursday.
"I've played against Duric many times before. He uses his strength and height to create opportunities for himself in the penalty box. We need to be careful when he gets the ball," said Aidil Zafuan, who also pledged not to allow Singapore to score goals in the return leg. |
