Posted: 18 Aug 2011 08:25 AM PDT 2011/08/18 Felda settlers in Kota Tinggi were elated to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak whose father changed their lives PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's visit to the Felda communities in Kota Tinggi brought cheer to many of the settlers who had been cultivating the lands since the 1970s. They were elated to meet Najib, the son of former prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the man behind the Felda scheme.
At Felda Bukit Tunggal, Najib began his visit by dropping by three houses that had won awards for being the most beautiful homes in the settlement. The houses, all colourful bungalows with gardens, were said to be the symbols of the success stories of the once backwater area in the district.
Its edible garden is the talk of the village. Taha's son-in-law, Mohd Sabri Mohd Salleh, 46, said he came to the settlement after marrying Taha's daughter Hasnah in 1992.
"People worked very hard to put a decent meal on the table since the early 1980s when the Felda scheme first began here," he said. However Sabri said as an outsider, he was fortunate enough to witness changes which mostly took place from 2001. "More and more brick houses were built, and landscapes beautified and well-maintained. "All that hard work has finally paid off." Another Felda Tunggal settler, Abdul Rahman Rahmat, 62, was honoured to have the prime minister as a guest in his home. It was the first time the father of four and grandfather of six had met Najib in person. He made sure his home was spruced up for the visit. "The village committee informed me about Najib's visit a week earlier. "The other villagers and I have been busy cleaning up the garden and decorating our street. "My family has also been tidying up the house for this special visit," said an ecstatic Rahman. His wife, Norliah Mohd Said, 55, was also present to greet and chat with Najib and his entourage. Her husband moved to Felda Tunggal from Tanjung Surat, Pengerang, in 1980 in search of a better life for his family. He had previously worked as a fisherman and later as a member of the territorial army before applying for the Felda land scheme to cultivate oil palm. "Back in 1980, it was difficult to get work. "When I was in the army, someone advised me to take up an offer by Felda as obtaining land in the scheme was considered easy to get." Rahman persevered for many years before he enjoyed the fruits of his labour. "It was difficult to make ends meet at first as I only earned RM75 a month when I began in 1980. "Now, under the replanting scheme, I earn RM1,400 monthly." Najib later met the people at Al-Ikhwan Mosque, where most of the Felda families had gathered to greet him. The turnout was huge as many wanted to catch a glimpse of the country's leader. He then took some time off to perform the asar prayers before joining the mosque committee in preparing bubur lambuk to be given to everyone. In his speech after the prayers, Najib said he was overwhelmed by the rousing support by the Felda settlers and was impressed by the progress made by them so far in terms of income generation. "The people here are well-off and living the good life. "I am proud of them," said Najib. Later at Felda Air Tawar, some 15km from Felda Tunggal, Najib joined some 7,000 people at the Rahmat Ramadan breaking of fast dinner.
