'No guarantee we can rule forever, it's a whole new landscape'

SEREMBAN: Barisan Nasional leaders need to humble themselves and realise that they are in power only as long as the people want them, said its chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"Please humble yourselves. There is no guarantee we can rule forever. We are facing a whole new political landscape today and are assessed and judged by the people each day."

Najib said some BN leaders would prefer to paint a perfect picture and report that everything was fine in their particular areas or state.

"Everything is okay Datuk Seri... that is the answer I often get. But is it really okay? And what is the real scenario? Have we done our work... have we fulfilled our electoral promises?

"There are those who will say any thing to win votes and when they win the seat, there is no sign of them... they are hardly in their offices and work is not done," said Najib in his speech at the Negri Sembilan BN convention, near here yesterday.

The prime minister said when this happened, BN would be punished because the electorate would be angry with the representative concerned and would opt not to vote for the coalition as a whole.

"Voters these days are highly critical and demanding. Elected representatives must also be humble, apart from fulfilling all electoral pledges and serving the people."

Najib also urged all BN component party members to accept the concept of a "winnable candidate" and put personal differences aside in facing the next general election.

He said all quarters would need to be prepared to accept candidates chosen by the leadership and not pull any disappearing stunts if they or their choices were not picked.

"During the Sarawak state election in April, there was an assemblyman who ran off to London and even switched off his handphone because he was not chosen as a candidate.

"He was a three-term assemblyman and just because he was not chosen this time, he opted to disappear. Even I could not contact him. Fortunately, we won that seat... if we had lost, I would have personally looked for him."

Najib also urged all delegates to embark on a multi-dimensional preparation to face the next general election and not to use "old weapons to fight a modern war".

"Work towards adopting new methodologies to win. Do not at any one time sabotage the candidate.

"Though the momentum seems to favour us now, take nothing for granted. We must prove to the voters that we can deliver and it is time for us to get our mindsets ready."

'Umno won't stake claim to Penang CM's post'

Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak being greeted by delegates at the 40th Gerakan National Delegates' Conference yesterday. On his right is Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is not interested in staking a claim to the Penang chief minister's post if Barisan Nasional wrests the state back in the next general election.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he had discussed the matter with Penang Umno liaison chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman and it was decided that Umno did not need or wish for the post.

Najib said Umno was prepared to work with the other BN component parties in ensuring that the people in Penang would be given an alternative choice of government.

"We must work together, offer to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. I am not going to give up on Penang. Some people say there is no hope in Penang. Don't have a defeatist attitude.

"This is about the choice we can give the people and to show that we are a better choice. As BN chairman, I will be as fair as possible to all component parties," Najib said at the opening of Gerakan's 40th National Delegates' Conference yesterday,

Asked at a press conference later whether this meant Gerakan would lead Penang if BN were to win the state back, he said: "We have to sit down and discuss."

The prime minister, in his speech earlier, said it was time for Gerakan to rise to the challenge and walk the ground.

"I literally mean walk the ground. We must work the ground. Leaders must do that -- literally walk from house to house to talk to the people. Get new members and voters. I don't know if we have enough time or not."

Describing the present situation as a major crossroad before the next general election, Najib noted that the delegates were upbeat and wanted Gerakan to seize on this mood.

"I saw the exhibition (on Gerakan history) here but don't be trapped by nostalgia. Past is past. I want Gerakan to heal itself and be a force to be reckoned with in the context of national politics.

"But in order to do that, you must present to the people, in the context of Penang, an alternative plan and lineup. There will be painful and difficult choices to be made, but remember, the alternative of not doing anything is a lot worse."

Gerakan held Penang for 39 years before suffering its worst ever defeat in the state in 2008.

The party contested 10 parliamentary seats and 31 state seats across the country, winning only two and four seats, respectively.

Yesterday, Najib also stressed that gaining the people's trust was important if BN wanted to form the government.

He said the public must trust the coalition and the way to achieve this was through political transformation.

"All parties must do the transformation. Even in Umno, we have made changes, with a new culture and new thinking.

"But I didn't want to confuse them a lot, so I just told them to support winnable candidates."

He said all component parties must be open to the idea and make objective assessments on winning any constituency.

"We have to choose the best component parties in each constituency and the best candidates because we want to win big in the next elections."

Najib said the dynamics in constituencies may have changed as politics was never static.

"This is the political reality on the ground. We got to have the numbers. Democracy is all about numbers."

Although dismissing widespread seat swapping within BN, Najib said some adjustments would be done.

"We are a big family, so it's more complex when we want to settle for each constituency. It will take time. It all comes from the principle of winnable candidates."
