KL shares traded higher driven by gains

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia opened higher in early trading Monday, driven by gains in selected heavyweights and lower liners, dealers said.

As at 9.18am, the barometer index, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI), gained 4.84 points to 1,774 after opening 3.83 points higher at 1,772.99.

Dealers said the sharp rally in share prices in regional markets, mainly among the US and Japanese stocks due to exuberant consumer sentiments in the US and improved economic outlook in America, led market sentiments today for the local bourse.

The Nikkei share index as well as the Dow and S&P 500 index soared to a record high.

The Finance Index surged 46.881 points to 16,795.89, the Plantation Index rose 31.24 points to 8,260.54, and the Industrial Index gained 13.33 points to 3,037.78.

The FBM Emas Index jumped 52.36 points to 12,324.54 and the FBMT100 perked 44.01 points to 12,098.51.

The FBM Mid 70 Index advanced 95.92 points to 14,187.91 while the FBM Ace Index soared 58.52 points to 4,737.93.

Gainers led losers 391 to 78, 162 counters unchanged, 968 untraded and 18 other susepended.

Turnover stood at 254.165 million shares worth RM131.597 million.

Actives, Luster Industries gained two sen to 17.5 sen, Instacom Group rose two sen to 41.5 sen, Daya Materials earned one sen to 25.5 sen, Ingenuity Consolidated added half a sen to 13 sen.

Heavyweights, Maybank gained eight sen to RM10.10, CIMB Group rose one sen to RM8.34, Axiata Group increased three sen to RM6.94 and Sime Darby Group advanced seven sen to RM9.57.-- Bernama

Ringgit traded slightly lower Monday

The ringgit was traded slightly weaker against the US dollar in the early session today as demand has yet to pick up, a dealer said.

At 9am, the local unit was quoted at 3.0235/0265 to a greenback from Friday's close at 3.0200/0240.

However, the ringgit was traded higher against other major currencies.

The local currency appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.4025/4058 from 2.4027/4076 on Friday and rose against the yen to 2.9397/9441 from 2.9417/9471 last week.

The ringgit also strengthened against the British pound to 4.5866/5921 from Friday's 4.5976/5046 close and was sharply higher against the euro at 3.8770/8818 from 3.8846/8901 last week.-- Bernama
