AMIRULHADI Zainal and Baddrol Bakhtiar's goals on either side of half-time gave Malaysia a comfortable 2-0 win over Myanmar in a friendly international at the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium in Kota Baru yesterday.

National coach K. Rajagobal gave Kelantan midfielder Shakir Shaari his international debut while striker Abdul Hadi Yahya, who scored on his Malaysia debut against Hong Kong, started upfront alongside Baddrol.

With the match played on a water-logged pitch after heavy rain lashed Kota Baru, few chances were created although Myanmar twice threatened to score in the ninth and 24th minutes when goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli failed to claim two low crosses.

Only the interceptions of right-back Helmi Remeli prevented the ball from falling to lurking Myanmar players at the far post.

Malaysia finally went ahead in the 28th minute after mistakes by Myanmar defenders saw the ball fall kindly to Amirulhadi Zainal in the box and the Selangor winger made no mistake with a low effort.

Helmi was again Malaysia's saviour when he deflected a goal-bound Myanmar shot wide in the 41st minute before Malaysia made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break.

Hadi floated a cross into the box which a Myanmar player deflected to Baddrol, who fired in a fine volley for his third international goal in 10 appearances.

Baddrol proceeded to squander two more chances as Malaysia dominated the second half as defender Aidil Zaquan Radzak suffered a worrying injury before rookie goalkeeper K. Sasikumar earned his first cap with two minutes remaining.

FORMER Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union deputy president Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah returned to sports administration in a big way when he was elected as Olympic Council of Malaysia vice president yesterday.

Danyal and Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress deputy president Tan Sri Mohd Noor Abdul Rahim were the two newly elected vice presidents who ousted former Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation president Datuk W. Y. Chin.

Retaining their vice president seats were Datuk Dr Zakaria Ahmad and Datuk Roy Rajasingham while Low Beng Choo was returned unopposed for the vice president's post reserved for women.

President Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar also won unopposed as did new deputy president Datuk A. Sani Karim, who relinquished his vice president's post to replace Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan, and honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi.

Tunku Imran said he was pleased with the new additions as they brought a lot of experience to OCM.

"With the new lineup, OCM will continue its activities in managing teams and athletes for sports events," he told reporters after the results were announced.

"OCM will also continuously provide support and assistance to its affiliates, who are the national sports associations, in their programmes and administrative functions."

Former Malaysian Taekwondo Association assistant secretary Kumar Thangaraju is another new face in OCM, defeating incumbent Ramlay Abdullah for the assistant secretary's post.

The 30th general assembly chaired by Tunku Imran was attended by more than 300 representatives from national sports associations.
