KUALA LUMPUR: As the authorities coordinated their efforts to protect government websites from further attacks, it has been revealed that those to date had originated mostly from within the country.

"Only 10 per cent of the attacks on the 198 affected websites had been traced to foreign hackers. Most were simply defaced," said Information, Communications and CultureMinister Datuk Seri Dr RaisYatim yesterday.

CyberSecurityMalaysia, an agency in the Science,Technology and Innovation Ministry tasked with monitoring Internet security, said no sensitive information had been stolen, leaked or damaged by the hackers.

Rais said the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and CyberSecurityMalaysia had been working on identifying and apprehending the culprits.

He said as the bulk of the attacks came fromwithinMalaysia, it would not be necessary for the government to seek Interpol's assistance.

Nevertheless,Rais said the government viewed the hacking as a serious offence.

"The attacks have been a nuisance to the people. For example, they could not do online banking. The government will take stern action against those responsible."

CyberSecurity Malaysia also reported that attacks on government websites were ongoing but at a reduced rate, adding that most, including www.malaysia.gov.my, were already back online.

"A few are in the process of being recovered," said CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt-Col Datuk Husin Jazri.

"Our focus now is to halt the attacks and get the affected websites up and running."

He said the agency had received information on the hackers while police had identified some of the perpetrators.

Husin advised all companies and organisations, whether in the public or private sector, to be alert and do the necessary to secure their websites.

"The hackers may not stop at only government websites."

Those whose websites had been defaced or had observed attempts on their sites can contact the Cyber999 Help Centre by emailing cyber999@cybersecurity.my or mycert@mycert.org.my

It was understood that several websites were also temporarily taken down to prevent hacking.

The Human Resources Ministry, for example, decided to shut down its website following several attempts to hack it.

"We took down the website on Thursday night but it is back up now. No harm was done," a ministry source said.

In Kuantan, the state government said it had taken several measures to protect government websites, including improving the security system and backing up important files.

However, state Science, Innovation and Information Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said there were no hacking reports.

SEPANG: The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces Gen Sheikh Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan was conferred with the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (honorary) award, which carries the title "Tun" yesterday.

Sheikh Mohamad received the award from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin during a 30-minute audience, graced also by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, at Istana Negara at 10.30am.

Present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Sheikh Mohamad, who was here on a one-day official visit, arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 9.30am, accompanied by a delegation of senior government officials. They were welcomed by Nor Mohamed and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said that Malaysia was confident that the visit would consolidate the existing relations between Malaysia and the UAE.

Trade and investment relations between Malaysia and the UAE have witnessed tremendous growth in the last several years. Last year, UAE was Malaysia's largest trading partner in the Middle East, with trade amounting to RM19.80 billion (US$6.10 billion) compared with RM16.10 billion in 2009.

In terms of investment, Mubadala Development Company from the UAE is a major investor here.

Later, Sheikh Mohamad and his delegation, accompanied by Najib, Rosmah and Nor Mohamed, visited the Petronas Twin Towers.

Sheikh Mohamed went to the sky bridge connecting the two towers on the 42nd floors.

A luncheon followed at the Malaysian Petroleum Club.

After lunch, Najib and the Abu Dhabi delegation performed Friday prayers at the National Mosque.
