Territorial Army mulls forming all-Chinese company

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:59 PM PDT

SIBU: Regiment 501 of the Territorial Army based at the Sri Rajang Camp here is considering setting up an all-Chinese company of about 120 officers and personnel.

Its deputy commandant, Lt Col Azman Mohd Yassin, said today the town had a
large Chinese population.

"We have three battalions in the state under the regiment comprising about
1,600 officers and men who are mostly bumiputera.

"Many Chinese in Melaka and Penang are in the territorial army, and we would
like the same to happen here," he told a news conference, here.

Azman said that if this could be done, Sarawak would create history in the
country with having the first all-Chinese company of the territorial army.

"We hope to recruit about 200 Chinese volunteers by the end of the year.
Today, we managed to recruit three," he said.

Azman said the regiment still required 40 per cent more volunteers to meet
its quota.

Those aged 18 to 45, in good health and with a minimum Penilaian Menengah
Rendah (PMR) education were eligible for selection, he added.

"Successful candidates will be given one-month basic military training, with
an allowance of about RM800 during that period.

"Of course, there will be chances for promotion, and those genuinely
interested in a military career can join the regular army after five years," he
said. -- Bernama
