Melaka CM upset over media highlighting same-sex marriage

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:48 PM PDT

KULIM: Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has expressed regret over the playing up of news on the same-sex marriage of two men to take place soon in Malaysia.

He said highlighting the matter in the media gave the implication that
same-sex marriage was encouraged in the Malaysian community comprising people of
various races and religions.

The Star had reported on Thursday that self-confessed Malaysian gay pastor
Rev Ou Yang Wen Feng, 41, and his African-American partner Phineas Newborn III,

47, would marry at the end of this month or early next month, with the wedding
ceremonies to be held in New York and Malaysia.

The newspaper had ignored the sensitivity of the people in the country who
regarded same-sex marriage as something extraordinary and prohibited by
religion, Ali said at a Ramadan event organised by Kedah Puteri Umno in Kampung
Air Putih, Junjong, here last night.

He advised the people to be wary of this latest development in the way of

life and not to be influenced by it. Earlier, Ali gave away groceries and "duit raya" (cash) to about 200 poor people, single mothers and orphans. -- Bernama

Terengganu plant a pioneer in producing chemicals for animal feed

PUTRAJAYA: The world's first bio-methionine plant and its related facilities will be built in Malaysia for some RM2 billion, marking the country's largest industrial biotechnology investment so far.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who witnessed the announcement yesterday, said the plant, which will produce chemicals used in animal feed, was set to generate RM20 billion sales by 2020.

The project is a collaboration between investors CJ Cheiljedang from Korea and France's Arkema (CJ-Arkema), and project promoters — namely Malaysian Biotechnology Corp (BiotechCorp) and the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).

"This project will be a significant economic boost to the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and more importantly to the Special Economic Zone's Kertih Polymer Park," Najib said in a statement.

The investment will be a breakthrough for the global feed additives industry as for the first time, the production of bio-methionine will pool together both biotechnology advancement and applied chemistry. Bio-methionine is a sulphur amino acid widely used for animal feed in Asia.

BiotechCorp chief executive officer Datuk Dr Nazlee Kamal said this was a giant leap for Malaysia as a knowledge intensive and cost-effective industrial biotechnology hub in the region.

The 80,000-tonne bio-methionine production plant and the thiochemicals platform will occupy a 70ha area and be operational by 2013.

ECERDC chief executive officer Datuk Jebasingam Issace John said construction would begin in the middle of next year.

With this investment, ECERDC's target of securing RM5 billion worth of investment annually for ECER had been met earlier than expected.

The latest RM2 billion biotechnology investment would be spread over 10 years and more than half of the amount, estimated at US$400 million (RM1.2 billion), would be used to build the facility, said CJ Asia executive vice-president Jin-Hyun Kim.

C J- A rk em a 's decision to choose ECER as its site was due to the attractive fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, location and manpower availability, said Arkema Asia Pacific president Dominique Namer.

The project was expected to require a workforce of more than 470.

Seoul-based CJ is listed on the Korean Stock Exchange with a market value of US$2.98 billion. It is a leading producer of fermentation-based products such as feed amino acids, MSG and nucleotides with global manufacturing and business operations in six continents.

Arkema is France's leading chemicals producer and operates in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

In 2009, its revenue stood at US$5.88 billion.

It is listed on the Euronext Paris Exchange with a market value of US$6.34 billion. It has over 80 plants globally and the Asian market contributed 18 per cent of its sales, a figure it aimed to increase to 22 per cent by 2014.
