RM6 million loss in storehouse fire

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 10:41 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: A furniture and foodstuffs storehouse in Jalan Bandar Dalam, Gombak, was destroyed in a fire early today, causing losses estimated at RM6 million.

The premise was a rubber factory before it was modified to store furniture and goods such as onions, flour and dried chilli.

Sentul Fire and Rescue Department chief Zahari Muhamad said a short-circuit was believed to have caused the fire at about 12.40am.

"A worker had noticed the fire starting and called us," he told reporters at the scene.

Seventy firemen from the Sentul, Gombak Selatan, Chow Kit, Hang Tuah, Wangsa Maju, Seri Hartamas, Setapak and Taman Desa stations brought the blaze under control by 3am.

Several residents near the store said the fire spread quickly.

Housewife Rosnani Muhamad, 51, said she heard a loud noise coming from outside her home at 1am and went out to see what was happening.

"My husband and I saw flames spreading across the store. There were already many policemen at the scene," she said.

Another housewife, Rohani Abdul Malik, 50, said she was fast asleep when her husband woke her up.

"I was shaking in fear when he told me that a fire had broken out near our house. Residents in the area were directed to exit their homes," she added.-- BERNAMA

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 09:37 PM PDT

NEW DELHI: The death toll from a 6.9-magnitude quake that hit the India-Nepal border has risen to 98, officials said today, warning that more bodies were likely to be found in the coming days.

At least 65 people were killed in India's northeastern state of Sikkim in Sunday's quake, state official Sonam Lepcha told AFP in Gangtok, where fatalities were being brought in from outlying areas.

"Bodies are being airlifted by various agencies and are being brought to the various district hospitals," she said.

"We fear that more lives have been lost but it is very difficult to give an exact count."

Police said 18 people were killed elsewhere in India, while eight people died in Nepal, and China's official Xinhua news agency reported seven dead in southern Tibet.

Tremors were felt more than 1,000 kilometres away in New Delhi to the west, and in Bangladesh to the south. -- AFP
