BUTTERWORTH: Pas deputy president Mohamad Sabu claimed trial at the Butterworth Sessions Court for a criminal defamation charge following his remarks over the Bukit Kepong tragedy.

The 56-year-old politician, who is charged under Section 500 of the Penal Code pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ikmal Hisnan Mohd Tajuddin.

Putrajaya deputy head of prosecution division Mohd Hanafiah Zakaria led a three-men prosecution team while Mohamed or better known as Mat Sabu, was represented by lawyers Hanipa Maidin and Aminuddin Zulkipli.

Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, 57, from Guar Petai, Tasek Gelugor, was alternatively charged under the same section with criminal defamation against three policemen who defended themselves in the communist attack on Feb 23 1950.

Mat Sabu is accused of defaming the policemen and their families knowing that what he was doing would damage their good name.

He was alleged to have committed the offence in front of a kindergarten at the PAS education centre at Padang Menora in Tasek Gelugor last Aug 21.

Mat Sabu was alternatively charged with defaming Constables Marin Abu Bakar Daud, Jaafar Hassan and Yusoff Rono and their families at the same time and place.

The charge followed a report by three family members of the constables, Jamilah Abu Bakar, Azlas Jaafar and Nazir Yusoff.

The court has set the bail at RM15,000 with one surety and fixed Oct 27 for mention followed by the trial beginning Dec 5 until 9.

PM shows lighter side on radio

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians got a glimpse of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's lighter side yesterday, a pleasant change from his usual formal demeanour.

Najib was a guest at two popular radio stations -- Hitz.fm and MIX fm -- and made an impromptu stop at Malay radio station Era FM where he disclosed his interests in football, music, movies, his job as the country's chief executive and his recent attendance at the Suara Kami concert.

He also talked about how he wakes up in the mornings (his iPhone plays Culture Club's Karma Chameleon as an alarm), thinks he has the most Twitter followers in Malaysia ("yes, I believe so"), youths ("I engage them simply because they are the future of Malaysia") and his exercise regime ("I take some (vitamin) pills and exercise three to four times a week").

Dressed casually in a pale blue shirt, blue slacks and a matching jacket, Najib, who started his radio blitz at about 7.50am, spent about 30 minutes at Hitz and MIX and a few minutes at Era.

The highlight of his visit was at Hitz.fm's Morning Crew programme where he helped deejays JJ and Ean prank their producer, The Jakeman, during the lighthearted Gotcha morning show.

In the pre-recorded call, Najib told Jakeman his (Najib's) son Nor Ashman, an aspiring deejay, should be given a two-hour slot on air to showcase his talents.

"I am talking to you not as the PM but as a dad. You give him a chance and you'll never regret it. He's really good," Najib said.

A shocked Jakeman -- AMP Radio Networks general manager of programming Jake Abdullah -- agreed to audition Nor Ashman but needed to find out what kind of music he spins.

Jakeman admitted on radio he didn't realise he was being pranked until JJ and Ean yelled "Gotcha" at him.

"I didn't see it coming, not in a million years. When I heard the voice -- Datuk Najib has a distinctive voice -- I thought 'Oh dear, what have I done wrong now?'" he said, while Najib laughingly admitted he really wanted "to get Jake".

Earlier, at the MIX Breakfast Show with deejays JD and Dilly, Najib took part in their "Battle of the Sexes" programme, a guy-versus-girl feature that puts participants' general knowledge to test.

Despite admitting to being nervous, Najib won a point for the men's team as well as RM150 for correctly answering that 1980s singer Belinda Carlisle was formerly with the band The Go Go's.

However, he donated his prize money to participant Yam Poh Ling for being "sporting".

The two deejays also played his favourite song on air -- Ben E. King's Save the Last Dance.

On football, Najib, who is an avid Manchester United fan, expressed his pleasure at the team's performance so far.

"Well, can you get a better start? Five games, 15 points from five games, 8-2, 5-nil, those kind of performances and scores are unbelievable, unheard of. It's been a spectacular start."

He also touched on his son's passion for music, saying even though he did not understand, it reminded him of his time when he was playing music that his father did not understand as well.

"My son is passionate about spinning and blending music together. He has his own turntable in his room and he spends hours in the room. I'm relieved because he doesn't get up to any mischief," he laughingly said, adding that he likes the music his son churns out.

On his job as the prime minister, Najib said he wakes up between 6am and 6.30am and he has never hit the snooze button, even though he has been tempted to.

"Ever since I took this job, my days have gotten longer and my nights have gotten shorter. So that's some indication of the kind of workload I have to deal with."

He also revealed that he once went out without his bodyguards but that got the entire Bukit Aman alerted, "so I gave up the idea".

Well-known for being active on microblogging site Twitter and social networking site Facebook, Najib admitted that at times, his aides help out in sending out updates on his behalf.

"I do tweet on my own but there are times when someone does it for me. I have to run this country. I can't be a PM tweeting all the time," he said.

Asked about the most interesting person he had met, Najib said former South Africa president Nelson Mandela was the person that he was "most struck with".

"For what he has gone through, a man who's larger than life and the fact he could be so forgiving despite the cruelty that was inflicted on him... that's impressed me most, the strength of his character," he said.

On the recent Suara Kami concert, Najib was pleasantly surprised by the reaction given by those attending the event, describing it as an "awesome, wonderful feeling".

"It's amazing. I was excited. I was supposed to hide behind the stage but they started to clap and wave at me before I was introduced.

"When I was on stage with my wife, it was really great. It was awesome, It was a wonderful feeling," he said, adding that the energy of the young generation was "awesome" as well.

Touching on the new word sempoi (cool) which he learnt from his Twitter followers, Najib said he picked it up after some people used it to describe his attendance at the concert.

"Rooney is sempoi, JD is sempoi," he replied when requested to use the word in a sentence.

At Era FM's Riuh Pagi Era programme, deejay Aznil Nawawi asked whether Najib got tired since he had a packed schedule.

The prime minister admitted he did, but he needed to do his best for the country.

"The rakyat gave me their trust and with it, I try to do my best."

He also advised Era listeners to do their best, adding that the government was also trying its best to make "a huge transformation" to benefit the young.
