Posted: 05 Jun 2011 11:21 AM PDT EXEMPLARY TEACHERSOutstanding members of the teaching profession received awards on Teachers Day INVESTING in students is creating the building blocks for a nation of strong and successful citizens. This point was made by Johor Baru district officer, Burhan Amin, when he spoke to the city's district-level teachers during the Teachers Day event on May 21, 2011.
Burhan acknowledged that teachers experience a lot of pressure from various sources but he urged them to "keep the candle burning" and to serve faithfully. Teachers were encouraged to improve their skills and abilities to deal with new and challenging situations, and persevere when dealing with wayward students.
The event started with cadets marching smartly into the event hall with the Teachers Day flag and the ceremonial raising of the flag. This was followed by a solemn oath-taking ceremony. A choir comprising teachers presented three songs, including this year's Teachers Day theme, Guru Penjana Transformasi Pendidikan Negara (teachers, the catalysts for national education transformation).
A series of awards was presented to teachers in various categories like Innovation that included the award for Special Innovation to Sekolah Tun Fatimah and SK Bandar Uda 2. Among the proud recipients of the Teachers Day Awards was Joey Ong Suk Mei of SMK Taman Sutera who received the Teacher with Disabilities (OKU) Excellence Award. "A good master will produce good students," said Goh Chee Kiat, principal of SMK Dato Jaafar, quoting a Chinese proverb to illustrate how teachers must be well-equipped to impart knowledge and develop students in a holistic manner. Goh, who received a Guru Berjasa award and is due for retirement in October, lamented that the younger crop of teachers lacked competency in knowledge content while their maturity and training were inadequate when faced with more responsibilities and the many daily challenges in school. After a long and eventful career in education, Othman Omar, 61, was chosen as the State's Tokoh Guru (teacher figure) this year. Othman, who was the principal of SMK Tasek Utara, Johor Baru before his retirement in 2005 was not deterred by the school's reputation as being full of delinquents, but instead chose to treat them with love and respect. "I hope educators will not discriminate against students, whether they are Malay, Chinese or Indian, because they are all God's creations and the only difference is their individual backgrounds," said Othman. Othman is best remembered for introducing Tandas Terbuka or the open toilets concept in the school to discourage any delinquent behaviour in the toilets. This idea to break down the outer wall and beautify the area around the toilet units was so innovative that it attracted the attention of the Ministry of Education. He also implemented the use of a Management Book in every classroom for daily record of incidents and activities as well as a successful Mentor-Mentoree programme in the ratio of one teacher to 15 students. By guiding the teaching team and students with his motto: Bertuah beruntung, Othman has gradually transformed the school into one where parents are proud to enrol their children. Since retirement, Othman continues to help the community as chairman and advisor at the old mosque in Jalan Serindit, Larkin Jaya. He is also involved with promoting education through the internet under the "Score 'A' Programme" (Kenshido International Sdn Bhd). District Education Officer, Mohd Hanafi Samad, said unlike in the past when teachers adopted a more dictatorial stance, they are now more like friends to students. With many parents working full-time, students often have to turn to their teachers with their problems, and they would feel more comfortable confidine in them. To provide a safe place for students to study after school hours, he said all schools are encouraged to keep their libraries open until 5pm.
