Mosti sets up RM200m NanoMalaysia Centre

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 10:17 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Nanotechnology Directorate (NND), a unit under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), will set up a RM200 million NanoMalaysia Centre complex at Senai High Tech Park, Johor.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, said the project, under the 10th Malaysia Plan, would be the first of its kind in Malaysia to further drive the development of nanotechnology.

"The centre is expected to be completed within 12 months with administration and incubation centres," he told reporters after officiating the NanoMalaysia Summit and Expo 2011 here today.

It will act as a one-stop centre for nano science and technology activities and provide the missing link between laboratory and market.

The centre will be developed by Senai High Tech Park Sdn Bhd via private-public partnership concept. It will be managed by NND with the incorporation of NanoMalaysia Bhd as commercial vehicle.

The development of the centre is part of the NanoMalaysia Programme Roadmap to facilitate and provide commercialisation platforms, including technology incubator facilities.

Ongkili said the centre aimed to create the critical mass of entrepreneurs and to facilitate the creation of new nanotechnology-based firms.

"It will also provide the infrastructure and facilities with conducive environment for translational and downstream nano research activities, as well as a workplace for nanotechnologists and scientists," he said.

Under the 10-year NanoMalaysia Programme Master Plan for 2010-2020, it is expected to increase talents with high knowledge in nano science and technology and to commercialise three local products namely, aerogel, carbon nano tube and nanocatalyst in 2012/2013.

The programme also aimed to generate between RM100 million and RM150 million in business in 2012/2013 and RM300 million in 2015.

At the event, MOSTI also recognised five research and development centres of excellence out of 17 nationwide to further contribute towards achieving Malaysia's nano aspiration.

They are Centre of Innovative Nanostructures and Nanodevices at Universiti Teknologi Petronas; Ibnu Sina Institute for Fundamental Science Studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia; Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Institute of Nano Electronic Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Perlis; and, Mimos Nanoelectronics. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are working with several government agencies in preparing for the "worst" in the event a group of international hackers carry out their threat against the country.

Calling themselves "Anonymous", the international hacker group has threatened to sabotage and disrupt the Malaysian government's official online portal tomorrow.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said police were working with the National Security Council and CyberSecurity Malaysia in tracking and monitoring the group.

"We are looking at various measures to identify the hackers and take steps to prevent the attack." He said several IT experts had been roped in for this effort.

The group, believed to be made up of hackers worldwide, claimed they we r e targeting the Malaysian government after noticing unreasonable censorship in the country.

The group specified that the recent blocking of file-sharing and sites, such as The Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks, as the reason for their outrage and threat.

In a message at pastebin.com, the group claimed that the Malaysian gover nment's censorship was similar to taking away basic human rights.

"Malaysia is one of the world's strictest governments, even blocking out movies, and television shows.

"These acts of censorship are inexcusable," the group said. The group threatened to carry out the hacking, dubbed "Op eration Malaysia" at 7.30pm GMT (3.30am tomorrow local time) which can be accessed on a graphic poster at http://i.imgur.com/PTFWh.png.

The discovery of the threat was made by a computer security software firm officer in Finland, with an online notification at 4.42am yester - d ay.

Last week, Anonymous launched DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks on Turkish government websites, in protest against the government's plans to introduce Internet filter ing.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said it was working with other government agencies to coordinate security measures to mitigate the attack.

It said in a statement that it was aware of the planned cyber attack on the malaysia.gov.my website through news reports on the matter.

Japan finds radiation traces in whales

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 10:35 PM PDT

TOKYO: Japanese whale hunters have found traces of radioactive caesium in two of the ocean giants recently harpooned off its shores in the Pacific Ocean, a fisheries agency official said today.

Two minke whales culled off the northern island of Hokkaido showed readings of 31 becquerels and 24.3 becquerels of caesium per kilogram, he said, adding that the cause may be the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The level is far below the country's recently-set maximum safe limit for seafood of 500 becquerels per kilogram, he said.

"There is no data available to compare whether the readings for radioactive materials are higher than normal," he said.

"We will continue to monitor the development, as we do for all seafood and marine life" that is caught off the Pacific coast, he said.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has leaked radioactive water into the Pacific since it was battered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which disabled cooling systems, triggering reactor meltdowns and explosions.

The Japanese public and some marine life experts have voiced fears that radioactive material in the sea can concentrate among large and long-lived marine creatures at the top of the food chain.

The government has banned fishing in areas near the crippled nuclear plant, and local governments and fishing cooperatives are conducting regular radiation screenings of seafood along the Pacific coast.

Japan hunts whales under a loophole to an international moratorium that allows killing the sea mammals for "scientific research".

Japan also argues that whaling is an integral part of the island-nation's culture, and whale meat is sold openly in shops and restaurants. - AFP

Malaysia mobile mart grows by 17pc

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 10:01 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The mobile advertisement market in Malaysia grew by 17 per cent to 245 million monthly advertisement impressions from January to April this year, driven by smartphones.

In a statement today, InMobi, a mobile advertisements network, said smartphones, which now represented two of every five advertisements in the market, grew by 28 per cent over the same period.

The findings are part of InMobi's April 2011 Mobile Insights Report -- Malaysia Market.

InMobi vice president/managing director, Asia Pacific, Atul Satija, said the volume of mobile impressions in Malaysia signified the reach mobile devices could offer local, regional and global brands in this mobile market.

"With such substantial and sustained increase, Malaysia has quickly become a key growth market for us driven by larger advertising budgets and greater awareness of the benefits of the medium," he said.

He said Nokia remained the number one manufacturer in Malaysia holding a 37.9 per cent impression share, while HTC was the biggest winner in first quarter, increasing share by 5.6 share points.

Apple iPhone still remained the most popular device in Malaysia with 8.2 per cent share of impressions, he said.

Atul said almost six of every 10 mobile ads across the InMobi network in Malaysia were delivered across Nokia and Sony Ericsson devices. -- BERNAMA

Azizul aims to make a victorious return.

AZIZUL Hasni Awang has confirmed he will make a competitive return at the World University Games in Shenzen, China, on Aug 13-17.

The 23-year-old reigning UCI World Cup keirin overall champion and World No 1, has recovered fully from injuries sustained in a horrific crash at the final round of the UCI World Cup in Manchester on Feb 19.

The horror of the 20cm splinter that pierced his left calf as Azizul braved on to ride to a sensational bronze medal in Manchester, is now behind the Dungun-born as he focuses on regaining his best.

Azizul began light training a month ago, but has now signaled that he is fully recovered and ready to return to the elite squad's training base in Melbourne by the end of this month.

"Up until a week ago, there was still some pain in the area that was injured, but now it feels fine. I am ready to resume full training," said Azizul, the country's Sportsman of the Year in 2010.

Azizul is currently working on regaining his endurance under national road team coach Graham Seers before returning to Melbourne under head coach John Beasley.

The World University Games squad are likely to comprise Azizul, Akmal Amrun and representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education's cycling focus centre at University Teknologi Malaysia Malacca headed by Sayuti Zahit.

Keirin specialist Azizul said although he has confirmed his participation in the World University Games, the number of events he will contest in, has yet to be determined.

"We've not decided on that yet. It will be up to John to decide, once he has evaluated my condition," said Azizul.

Holding the world's top position in the keirin also puts Azizul in a commanding position to secure his berth for next year's London Olympics when the qualifying process resumes with the World Cup season in Astana, Kazakhstan on Nov 4-6.

A Malaysia rider (left) tussles with a New Zealand player in Pekan yesterday.

MALAYSIA pushed themselves to the limit to snatch a 9-8 win over New Zealand in their opening match of the Asian-Australasian-African Polo Championships at the Royal Pahang Polo grounds in Pekan yesterday.

Royal Malaysian Polo Association president, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who left the Royal Box to stand with Malaysian supporters on the field despite a drizzle, jumped for joy when the final whistle was blown.

"This is a very sweet victory for Malaysia. We have never played any of these teams in such a tournament before. So this win means a lot," said Tengku Abdullah, who hugged the players and team officials after the win.

"We showed tremendous fighting spirit. The players played their guts out and never gave up even when the chips were down. I hope they can keep up the momentum for our next match which is against India."

Yesterday's win was all the more sweeter for the Malaysians as the Asian-Australasian-Africa Championship also serves as the Zone D Qualifier for this year's FIP Polo World Cup Finals in San Luis, Argentina, on Oct 11-25.

Huziani Yunos (Handicap 4) was the toast of Malaysia with five goals - scoring a goal each in the first three chukkas and ended it with a brace in the fourth.

Local boy Edham Shahruddin (4) scored two while Tengku Ahmad Shazril and skipper Shaikh Reismann scored one each.

New Zealand's Andrew Parrott also scored five goals for his team while Kit Brooks scored two and Gary Vickers one.

In an earlier match, India, who had a 1/2 goal advantage, beat Australia 5 1/2-5 in another thriller with Samir Suhag scoring four goals. Vishal Chauhan scored the other.

The Australian scorers were Zac Hagedorn and Matt Grimes (two each) and Alec White.

Solution at hand for village flood woes

Solution at hand for village flood woes

2011/06/14
By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

REPRESENTATIVES from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) visited Kampung Sepakat Baru, Skudai, on June 9 following complaints of flash floods in the village that supposedly occurred due to a nearby UTM construction site.

UTM director of works, Dr Wahid Omar, said the university was very concerned over a recent report in Johor Streets which had highlighted frequent flash floods that affected at least 38 of the 100 households in the village.

Wahid said the university would take steps to further improve its existing drainage infrastructure at its construction site, in which three new faculties are being built.

Another construction site located 300m away is for a second route into UTM.

Kampung Sepakat Baru is located downhill from the construction sites of the four new faculties -- Science, Bioscience, Research Management Centre and Management and Human Resources Development.

The dual-carriageway Senai highway separates the village and construction site.

"Our preliminary investigations show only minimal water flows to the village during rain," said Wahid.

Checks conducted by UTM representatives during the visit also revealed flash floods could be due to the village's poor drainage system.

"The problem may lie in the village's drainage as the outflow of water was smaller than the inflow," he said.

"However, we will monitor the situation and will take whatever action deemed necessary to ensure development of the UTM campus will not affect nearby areas and villages."

Wahid said part of the village's drainage system was on land owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and a Lee Rubber estate.

"We will refer the problem to TNB, Lee Rubber and notify the Johor Baru Central Municipal Council to find a solution to the villagers' woes."

It was reported by Johor Streets on June 6 that villagers in Kampung Sepakat Baru had experienced flash floods whenever it rained, and that these were due to the nearby construction of the second route into UTM.

The village has experienced flash floods 10 times this year, and such incidents had not occured prior to the constructon work that began a year ago.

The villagers had also incurred losses as they have been replacing furniture and clearing mud from their houses after the floodwater recedes.

Meanwhile, village representative Azmi Basiran, 42, proposed a clean-up of the village's drains together with UTM and other agencies.

He hoped that with UTM representative's visit to the village, a solution to the flash flood would become a reality.

Boat sinks after docking at jetty

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 08:53 AM PDT

A FISHERMAN recently lost RM40,000 when his 10-year-old boat sank after docking near a jetty belonging to the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia.

Low Tek Siang, 40, said he and his friend "could not do much as the boat sank quickly as we were trying to start the engine."

He added that both of them also tried to get a crane to haul it up to shore, but that too was in vain. He said the boat had been in proper condition, and he managed to salvage the engine which can be used for other boats after repair.

Tek said he had lost RM100,000 this year after losing three boats at the jetty.
