Police rejects Perkasa's application for rally

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:32 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have rejected Malay rights group Perkasa's application for a permit to hold a rally at the Titiwangsa Stadium tomorrow.

Sentul OCPD ACP Zakaria Pagan said the application was not approved because the venue had already been booked by a sports organisation for a sports event tomorrow and on Sunday.

"Taking into consideration the information we received from Kuala Lumpur City Hall yesterday and other security aspects, we decided to reject their application for a permit," he told a news conference today.

He said police had informed Perkasa about the matter and that they accepted the decision and would not hold any gathering at the location.

Zakaria asked Perkasa members and the public not to gather at the stadium.

School-based assessment to address dropout problem: DPM

School-based assessment to address dropout problem: DPM

BANGI: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is confident that dropout problems can be addressed through the implementation of the school-based assessment system, particularly in enhancing the students' reading, writing, arithmetic and reasoning skills.

Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, said the implementation of the system was an important move towards putting in place a systematic assessment of students' abilities.

The system is an improvement to the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination-based assessment system. It will be implemented from Year 1 and Form One starting next year.

"This is in line with the concept that no child will be left behind, similar to those being practised in the United States where standard-based education system is in place and tailored towards continuous learning improvement.

"Through information collected during the assessment process, teachers and the school will be able to give constructive feedback and take follow-up steps to ensure students are able to work on overcoming their weaknesses," he said when launching a book on the school-based assessment system at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 7, here today. - BERNAMA

Kindie hostages rescued<br>Suspect shot by police in five-hour drama

MUAR: Thirty toddlers and kids were oblivious to the danger they were in at a kindergarten here yesterday.

For five hours, their lives were at the mercy of a serial child assailant, who had taken them and their four teachers hostage. He had hammered children in at least two previous cases.

When police stormed their double-storey kindergarten to end the hostage crisis by shooting the assailant, the children were calm as day.

For them, it was just another day at the kindie.

But outside, it was highoctane drama with parents sobbing and police snipers on rooftops.

The incident came to a happy ending after a note thrown out by a teacher gave police the break to end the siege.

Loi Hui Chung, 40, was shot in the head by police commandos, who stormed the kindergarten.

He later died at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.

The incident at Serikids Kindergarten began at 10am when Loi climbed over the fence of the compound in Taman Cemerlang II.

There were no security guards at the kindergarten, which has been operating for three years.

Loi was armed with a hammer, a parang and table stapler.

He also brought a padlock that was used to secure the front grille. Johor deputy police chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said Loi herded all the children and four women teachers into a room upstairs.

He also made several demands, including for a pistol, but when police negotiators told him to come out to take the weapon, he refused.

Police snipers had stationed themselves in surrounding buildings. Among the hostage-taker's demands was a meeting with the prime minister and home minister.

Police brought in the suspect's siblings and an uncle to persuade him to release the hostages and surrender, but the move failed.

After more than four hours, police got a break when one of the teachers wrote a note, alerting police that they were fine, and threw it out of a window.

When an officer climbed onto the second floor and perched outside a window of the room where the hostages were held, he noticed that Loi was missing.

The officer signalled to a teacher to lock the room from the inside and jam a chair against the doorknob.

Meanwhile, police commandos from the Special Action Unit made their way into the building.

While the commandos were going upstairs, Loi turned up with a fire extinguisher and attacked them. One of them fired a shot which hit Loi in the head.

A THREE-YEAR plan to win major honours has come to fruition after Kelantan cemented their place as a new power in Malaysian football by winning their maiden Super League title.

Proving that last year's Malaysia Cup triumph -- Kelantan's first major domestic honour -- was no flash-in-the-pan was always going to be difficult but they have certainly done it.

Having displayed a level of consistency unmatched by any other team this season after losing three key players from last season's squad, Kelantan have truly arrived on the big stage.

Few are aware that Kelantan only joined mainstream Malaysian football in 1951 and the years in between saw lean pickings.

Kelantan emerged East Zone winners eight times between 1959 to 1971, in the years when the Malaysia Cup was held on a zonal basis.

Only twice did Kelantan reach the Malaysia Cup final -- in 1955 and 1970 -- which came after they won their first silverware, the FAM Cup in 1953.

It was not until 2000 that they lifted another trophy when they won the Premier 2 title but two quick relegations followed and Kelantan found themselves playing in the third-tier FAM League in 2005.

They duly returned to the Premier League, winning the FAM Cup for a second time, before winning promotion to the Super League in 2008.

Their attempt to win a Cup double in 2009 was thwarted by Selangor in the final of the FA Cup and Negri Sembilan in the Malaysia Cup but there was no denying Kelantan in the 2010 Malaysia Cup final when they avenged their defeat to Negri.

After losing this year's FA Cup final to Terengganu, a determination not to let slip another trophy propelled Kelantan to win their remaining two league matches to add a new chapter to their resurgence.

"We are thankful for winning the Super League title for the first time. The league title is an important honour and we have always set it as one of our goals.

"The players have played to their best of ability all-season long and we have gone through many trials and tribulations to reach this point.

"Our three-year effort to reach the summit of Malaysian football has finally proved successful," said Kelantan FA president Tan Sri Annuar Musa after Kelantan beat Sabah 2-1 at Likas Stadium on Wednesday.

A huge part of Kelantan's success this year is down to coach M. Karathu, who celebrated a league title win for the first time in his career.

After losing Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Azizi Matt Rose and Norfarhan Mohammad to T-Team, Karathu was able to mould a side capable of challenging for honours and even introduced youngster Izuan Solahuddin to the first team.

The likes of Farisham Ismail and Shakir Shaari have also broken into the national team, which already boasts Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, S. Chanturu and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.

Only one thing spoilt Kelantan's title celebration when Norsharul, who scored twice against Sabah, missed out on the top scorer's honour after Terengganu's Hadi Yahya scored four goals on the final day to edge Norshahrul 20 goals to 19.

"Missing out on the Golden Boot is disappointing. It was something I had wanted but having lost it, I'll use this to spur me to get it next season. But I'm still glad that we are the league champions," said Norshahrul, who also struck four times in the FA Cup for 23 goals in all competitions.

Sweden, Australia into last eight

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 07:42 AM PDT

BERLIN: Australia join Sweden, the USA and Brazil in the quarter-finals of the women's World Cup after the Matildas sent former champions Norway home with a shock 2-1 win on Wednesday.

The Australians will now play Sweden in tomorrow's quarter-final in Augsburg after two goals from Kyah Simon saw her team come from behind in Leverkusen against Norway.

Elise Thorsnes had put Norway ahead with a 56th minute goal, but a minute later Simon grabbed the equaliser before the 20-year-old Sydney FC forward sealed victory with a header three minutes from time.

"There was a lot of courage and commitment shown out there," said Australia coach Tom Sermanni. "I was very deflated when they scored the first goal, but it was critical that we scored straight afterwards."

Sweden later stunned two-time winners the USA with a 2-1 victory in Wolfsburg.

Sweden's victory gives them a perfect 100 percent record from three games and leaves them as Group C winners, while the USA go through as runners-up.

The Stars and Stripes now face Brazil in Dresden in a mouth-watering tie on Sunday.

Sweden took the lead when midfielder Lisa Dahlkvist netted a penalty after 15 minutes and the Swedes extended their lead on 35 minutes when captain Nilla Fischer fired in a free-kick which deflected off a US player.

The Americans pulled a goal back when veteran forward Abby Wambach netted in the 67th minute for the 1991 and 1999 world champions, but it was not enough.

Brazil marched into the last eight as three second-half goals gave the south Americans a convincing 3-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Frankfurt that secured top spot in Group D for the 2007 runners-up.

Erika struck in the 49th minute and Cristiane doubled the advantage on the 54-minute mark before completing a brace with a penalty in injury time.

Equatorial Guinea exit their first World Cup with zero points.

Both North Korea and Colombia were eliminated after they ground out a goalless draw in their final Group C game in Bochum.

In tomorrow's quarter-finals, defending champions Germany will play Japan in Wolfsburg while England take on France in Leverkusen. -- AFP

Hong Leong Fin scouts for acquisitions

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:38 PM PDT

Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd, the Malaysian banking and insurance group controlled by billionaire Quek Leng Chan, is seeking acquisitions in emerging markets as it aims to triple its assets and profits in five years.

The group, which has a 20 per cent stake in China's Bank of Chengdu Co and a banking license in Vietnam, is looking for targets in countries including Thailand and Indonesia, Chief Executive Officer Raymond Choong, 55, said in an interview yesterday. The Kuala Lumpur-based firm may also buy brokerages in Malaysia, he said.

"The global market is now a borderless world," Choong said. "Being very successful in Malaysia doesn't make you an important player. China, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia are markets with high potential where we excel."

Hong Leong is expanding abroad as competition increases in its domestic market with the central bank granting more licences to international lenders including Bank of China Ltd. Its banking unit, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, completed a US$1.7 billion takeover of domestic rival EON Capital Bhd in May, enabling it to overtake RHB Capital Bhd as the nation's fourth-biggest bank.

Hong Leong Financial shares have climbed 52 per cent this year, and Hong Leong Bank rose 49 per cent, making them the biggest gainers on the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index.

Failed Merger

Quek, 70, is Malaysia's fourth-richest man with a net worth of US$4.8 billion, according to a Forbes magazine calculation as of March. The billionaire, who inherited part of his fortune from his father, also controls Hong Kong-listed investment company Guoco Group Ltd and has stakes in hotels and property across Southeast Asia, Forbes said on its website.

Malayan Banking Bhd and CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, the nation's two largest lenders, scrapped competing talks to acquire Kuala Lumpur-based RHB Capital Bhd last month after Abu Dhabi's Aabar Investments PJSC paid an 11 per cent premium for a 25 per cent stake in the nation's fifth-biggest lender.

Maybank, as the nation's largest lender is know, owns bank stakes in Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam, and this year acquired Kim Eng Holdings Ltd, a Singapore securities and investment-banking group.

RHB said on June 23 it will focus on its own growth strategies after the merger negotiations collapsed. -- Bloomberg

LEADING CHANGE

2011/07/06
By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

A group of young professionals held a motivational course for 40 students in Kota Masai, Pasir Gudang recently

WHILE many of their peers are focused on their careers and enjoying leisure activities, a group of young graduates are carrying out volunteer work.

The Klang Valley-based group, who call themselves Small Changes, go by the motto Small Changes, Big Differences.

They conducted a two-day motivational course for 40 secondary school students in Kota Masai, Pasir Gudang, recently.

The Form Four and Form Five students of SMK Kota Masai 2 are from disadvantaged backgrounds and had done well in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination.

Project coordinator and Small Changes founder Azri Malek Wan Haron, 25, said they decided on the project because they were concerned about the inequalities in educational opportunities in urban and rural areas.

He said students in rural areas were also disadvantaged by the fact that they had less exposure to role models, such as professionals.

"The aspirations of young people are shaped by their environment," said Azri, a law graduate of Cardiff University in Wales, United Kingdom.

"The son of a doctor is more likely to become one because of the influence of his father, while the son of a farmer is more likely to follow in his father's footsteps because he has no other role model to look up to.

"We hope to increase their exposure to other career paths. We believe every person should be given an equal chance to be the best that they can be."

The motivational course is the group's first project which targets students with disadvantaged backgrounds.

Azri said the group's membership included lawyers, lecturers, doctors, engineers, interior designers, quantity surveyors, accountants and economists.

He said they had rallied their relatives and friends to raise funds for the programme.

"We hope we can impart skills that we acquired in our studies and be a reference point for the students," said Azri.

The course started with an ice-breaking session between the students and facilitators.

As they took part in games such as human knot and power hand shake, the timid and shy students became excited and eager.

The first day's programme was called "Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail". Students were divided into groups and asked to build bridges using straws within a limited amount of time.

In the evening, the message that English was fun and should not be a barrier to success was imparted to the students through the "I Love English" module.

Murni Wan Mohd Nor, 25, who conducted the module said it was heartening to see students gaining confidence in using the language.

"It was fun watching the students having the courage to try speaking English. They laughed and learned together with their friends," said Murni, a graduate of International Islamic University Malaysia.

In the Career Presentation module, the students learnt about the various career paths that they could pursue.

Most of the students were aware of the work carried out by traditional professionals such as doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers. But, they were unfamiliar with careers in interior design, quantity surveying and other fields.

Azri said they had received positive feedback from the students and teachers.

"Many of the students were quite sad when the programme ended. We were touched when students thanked us for believing in them. Some of them were in tears," said Azri.

Another facilitator Wan Zokhri Idris, said the programme was an eye-opener as it revealed that some of the students lacked confidence.

"I asked a boy what he was aiming for in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. He told me he was aiming for 6As, 2Bs and 1C. I asked him why not aim for 9As? He said he didn't think it was possible," said the 28-year-old lecturer.

Some of the students said they were happy because they knew more or less where their paths would lead to after SPM.

"We now tell ourselves that if we think we can, we surely can," said Lumi Shara Jagat.

Muhamad Azim Huzaimi said: "The programme was fun as we didn't get punished for doing something wrong. Every module was exciting and motivating."

The participants received dictionaries, stationery, SPM exercise books and storybooks.

The group is planning to organise similar courses in the future.

Spoil yourself at the 'jewel' of Senibong

Spoil yourself at the 'jewel' of Senibong

2011/07/06
By Sim Bak Heng

EVER fancy an evening of seafood dining by the seaside, complete with non-stop sea breeze and a panoramic view of the Johor Straits?

Then head on to Permata Senibong Restaurant at Kampung Senibong in Johor Baru, where staff of the newly-opened restaurant will roll out a list of almost 110 seafood dishes in Malay, Thai or Nyonya styles to spoil even the most sophisticated diners.

As Kampung Senibong is famous for many stalls serving seafood, what makes Permata Senibong special is that it offers an additional delight of seafood cuisine served Nyonya-style, which does away the need for one to drive all the way to Malacca to satisfy one's craving for Peranakan dishes.

If the menu list is too much for you to digest, the staff will be happy to recommend the seafood dishes and whatever styles of cooking you desire.

Highly recommended is the steamed seabass Nyonya-style, which has a strong mix of sour and sweet flavours, and a rich fragrance of spices commonly used in Peranakan dishes.

The right proportion of lengkuas, turmeric, lemongrass, together with various types of chilli and onions, are finely-blended before it is steamed with the fish.

To add more nutrients to the fish, pieces of brinjal and lady's fingers are added in.

A word of advice is that this dish should be served hot. The thick and flavourful gravy is certain to stimulate one's tastebuds and there is no stopping after the first sip of the gravy.

Restaurant owner Amrol Hisham Dzukifli said the dish is a top seller and most customers will make a return trip to order the same dish.

"Even if you are not fond of Peranakan food, this dish will delight you," he said.

Besides seabass, diners may also opt for other types of fish like kerapu and ikan merah, among others.

For those who like crabs, Permata's crabs cooked in salted egg is sinfully delicious. While the dish served in most Chinese restaurants is relatively dry, the one served in Permata Senibong is creamy. Amrol said evaporated milk is used as one of the ingredients.

As the egg yolk dissolves in milk when cooking, the resulting creamy gravy has a truly luxurious taste, while the crab meat is more like a bonus. This is one of the signature dishes of the restaurant.

The Nyonya-style grilled squid is a must-try as well. It is grilled to perfection without sacrificing its succulent texture.

The squid is drenched with freshly-made sambal. A side plate of cincaluk with minced cili padi and onion is also offered to complement the dish. This dish may be taken as a starter or main dish.

Permata Senibong's fishhead curry is another hot seller.

Served in claypot, the thick, hot and spicy curry gravy will keep one perspiring for the whole session but no need to worry about this as the body is easily cooled off by the sea breeze.

A generous amount of lady's finger is found in the gravy to add fibre to the dish.

Permata Senibong has prepared six set of menu for those who come in groups.

Complete your meal with either a bowl of cendol or ais kacang, which is big enough for two to share.

Amrol takes pride of his durian cendol which is prepared by using fresh durian flesh.

The restaurant, with a seating capacity for 400 people, has an elevated section for steamboat dining.

Located at 8, Pusat Makanan Senibong, the restaurant opens daily from 4.30pm until 1.30am the following day. During weekends, there is an angklung performance to entertain diners.
