PUTRAJAYA: The world's first bio-methionine plant and its related facilities will be built in Malaysia for some RM2 billion, marking the country's largest industrial biotechnology investment so far.
"This project will be a significant economic boost to the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and more importantly to the Special Economic Zone's Kertih Polymer Park," Najib said in a statement.
The 80,000-tonne bio-methionine production plant and the thiochemicals platform will occupy a 70ha area and be operational by 2013.
The latest RM2 billion biotechnology investment would be spread over 10 years and more than half of the amount, estimated at US$400 million (RM1.2 billion), would be used to build the facility, said CJ Asia executive vice-president Jin-Hyun Kim.
