Deadly horse virus spreads in Australia

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 11:32 PM PDT

SYDNEY - An Australian veterinary surgery was placed under lockdown on Saturday following two fresh outbreaks of the Hendra virus that can be fatal if contracted by humans.

Two horses were put down after showing signs of the bat-borne virus in separate cases in Brisbane and in Hervey Bay, 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of the city, which is home to two million people.

Hendra is carried by fruit bats (flying foxes) and spread to horses through half-chewed fruit or water and food contaminated by their urine and droppings.

Tests were yet to confirm the Brisbane case but chief Queensland vet Rick Symons said it was "likely that it does have the Hendra virus."

Ten horses have now died in a month-long epidemic — the biggest since Hendra was discovered in 1994 — which has swept from the country's far north to within 500 kilometres of Sydney.

No humans have yet been infected but at least 59 people have been exposed to the virus. Four of the seven people to ever contract Hendra have died.

Symons said the scale of the outbreak was unusual, with a five-fold increase in the number of samples sent for testing from suspected cases.

"It could be because of a heightened awareness of Hendra virus," said Symons.

"There is clearly a heightened awareness among vets and horse owners about the possibility of Hendra virus infection when a horse becomes sick." The vets' surgery in Hervey Bay was sealed off after tests confirmed it was Hendra.

The other case, in the Brisbane suburb of Boondall, is 10 kilomtres from the city's thoroughbred racing precinct and follows a scare at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse earlier this week.

Parts of Randwick have been sealed off to keep horses clear from trees frequented by fruit bats and more than 100 racetracks across the country are being inspected for infection risks.

Racing Queensland spokesman Jamie Orchard said officials were on alert and urging trainers to take precautions such as covering feed and water and keeping horses indoors at dawn and dusk — peak feeding times for the bats.

But Orchard stressed that racehorses were at relatively low risk of contracting Hendra because they were kept and fed indoors.

"The risk of a racehorse that is currently training or going to the races contracting Henda is very slim," he told AFP. - AFP

Special teams to probe claims by doctors at Tung Shin Hospital

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 11:29 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR - Police have set up two special teams to investigate claims by 11 doctors at Tung Shin Hospital that tear gas was fired into the hospital compound during the July 9 illegal rally.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said one special team will investigate claims by the doctors while another team will investigate the whole incident.

"We (police) will investigate what happened including taking statements from doctors, witnesses and personnel (police) present at that time," he said after attending a family day function for Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent in Kepong near here today.

Tung Shin Hospital Board said on Monday that tear gas was not fired into the hospital compound but several news portals reported that 11 doctors claimed otherwise.

Visit opens new chapter in Malaysia, UK relations: Najib

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 09:44 PM PDT

LONDON -- Relations between the Malaysian and British leaderships have been given a new lease of life following the official visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to the UK which ended Friday.

After years of a relationship best described as being in a state of "benign neglect", Najib said the four-day "significant" visit was a recognition that Malaysia was important to the UK.

"Despite having strong linkages in fields such as trade, investment and education, ties at the leadership level appeared to be something that needed to be rekindled.

"And I'm satisfied that my meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron and other senior ministers had indicated that Malaysia is an important country for them to focus on," Najib told a press conference as he wrapped up his visit to the UK.

He said Cameron had mentioned the possibility of visiting Malaysia one day in efforts to strengthen London-Kuala Lumpur ties.

Najib also noted that within the space of one day (on Thursday), he had an audience with Queen Elizabeth II and had met Cameron as well as three other senior British ministers.

"This is a positive indication that the British side would also like to see our ties resuscitated and be given a higher profile," Najib said.

He said the Queen would also like to see relations between the two historically-linked countries be strengthened.

Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957.

In the course of the visit, he had a roundtable meeting with captains of industry from 25 UK companies representing sectors like manufacturing, education, finance, media, healthcare, aviation, oil and gas, defence, leisure services, project engineering and security services.

"MIDA and MITI have confirmed that we can expect investments worth between RM3 billion and RM5 billion in the next two to three years," said Najib.

He said MIDA and HSBC bank had agreed to intensify efforts to promote Malaysia as an investment destination in the UK and Europe.

Elaborating on his meeting with Cameron at No. 10 Downing Street, Najib said he had explained about Malaysia''s role in addressing domestic and regional security threats.

They also exchanged views on developments in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Najib said Cameron was also receptive to his "Global Movement of Moderates" initiative in a bid to counter extremism.

"He mentioned the possibility of both sides conducting a joint forum to elucidate this concept further," he said.

On his meeting with a group of prominent Muslim leaders in the UK, Najib said they would like to join hands with Malaysian entities in a bid to explain what Islam was all about towards reducing Islamophobia.

On talks to establish a free trade agreement between Malaysia and the European Union, Najib said that the matter may be concluded within a year or so. - Bernama

PM: Show Islam's positive image

LONDON: Moderate Muslims must come out of the woodwork to present a positive image of Islam and counter extremist elements in their midst, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said the 1.5 billion believers on the planet should practise moderation in their daily lives and show respect towards each other in order to project the true image of the faith.

He added that it was unfortunate that Islam, a religion which advocates moderation, was mired in Islamophobia and extremism in some parts of the world.

"The real issue is not between Muslims and non-Muslims, but between the moderates and extremists of all religions," he said in his remarks at a dialogue with a group of prominent Muslim leaders in the United Kingdom here yesterday.

The prime minister emphasised that moderation was the way forward towards a better future for the next generation.

Held on the final day of Najib's four-day official visit to the UK, the session was attended by, among others, Muslim Aid chairman Sir Iqbal Sacranie and Faith Regen Foundation chief executive Dr Husna Ahmad.

Others included Muslim Weekly newspaper chairman Abdul Malik, member of parliament for Glasgow Central Anas Sarwar and Muslim Council of Britain deputy secretary-general Dr Shuja Shafi.

Today, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the Lotus assembly plant in Norwich. -- Bernama

KENNY Dalglish's belief in young players coming through at Liverpool will be put to the test in a friendly match against Malaysia at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Towards the end of last season, Dalglish handed first-team debuts to John Flanagan and Jack Robinson while the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Kelly also enjoyed extended runs in the side.

Another promising talent is Conor Coady who emerged to score in Liverpool's first pre-season warm-up against Guangdong Sunray Cave on Wednesday as Dalglish looks to promote home-grown talent within the club.

"It was great to see Conor Coady last night (Wednesday) and also nice that when he scored. Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom, two players he has grown up with, were on the field at the same time and were there to congratulate him," said Dalglish at a question-and-answer session in Bandar Utama on Thursday before he left for London.

"One of the things we are really proud of is how well the academy is developing since the Spanish coaches came in. You can't get success just by buying players, you have to bring through your own as well. We are all very proud of what is being achieved at our academy and long may it continue."

Few talents have come through the ranks at Liverpool since Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen first emerged and a succession of managers, including Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez, chose to bring in foreigners rather than promote players from inside the club.

Dalglish, however, is also keen on signing talented players from outside the club and the arrival of Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson is a sign that Liverpool under Dalglish are returning to their roots of being populated by British-born players.

"If someone comes up who is of interest we will try our best," said Dalglish. "No one can point the finger at (owner) John (W Henry) and say they haven't supported us financially. They have been fantastically supportive since January when Fernando Torres went and we brought Andy Carroll straight in, along with Luis Suarez who was coming in anyway."

Liverpool coach Steve Clarke will take charge of the side for today's friendly as Dalglish returned to England to finalise the transfer of Stewart Downing.

But he left this message for Reds fans in Malaysia: "We appreciate the support we get from you all. The players have been taken aback by the support you have given them.

"It's important as a club that we come out and see you whenever we can.

"Support isn't just measured by finance and we really do appreciate what you do for us."

SK St Joseph emerged champion in the state-level primary school choral speaking competition recently

THE hall erupted in cheers when SK St Joseph Johor Baru was declared the champion in the state-level primary school choral speaking competition.

They had presented a story, entitled "Friendship", about a group of animals and how they planned to rescue their friend, a deer, which was caught in a hunter's net.

Using different voices, the pupils played the roles of the deer, mouse, crow and tortoise, as well as a sonorous-sounding creature that went "Uh huh, uh huh!" to drive home the point that everybody needs friends.

The judges were impressed by the boys' eloquence, clear enunciation, passion and creativity.

The children had clearly prepared for the contest with great dedication under the guidance of their teacher Sakuntala Devi Govindaraju.

The girls of SK Convent Muar, who spoke about "The wonder of fairy tales", came second. SK Convent Batu Pahat placed third. They had discussed the topic "As I See It".

Johor Baru Education Department human development division deputy chairman Shahrudin Saari presented the prizes to the winners.

M Suites Hotel organised the competition with the JB Education Department. It was part of the hotel's community service programme for youth educational development. The winners were among nine teams which made it to the finals. Each team had between 30 and 35 members.

The teachers said they wanted the children to experience the joy of learning English through choral speaking and appreciate the fact that it was not impossible to master the language.

Each team selected its topic with care by taking into consideration its members' interests and vocabulary level. They included topics related to environmental protection such as "The ugly and unbelievable habits of the human race", "The cries from blue beauty" and "Save the Earth".

As a result, the pupils also learned about what they could do to protect the environment for future generations.

Two teams discussed "Road Safety". One team spoke about our multi-cultural society and unity in diversity under the theme "1Malaysia Unique Lifestyle".

M Suites Hotel Johor Baru has been organising programmes for the educational development of single mothers and adopted more than 170 students from single-parent families since 2002.

UNIVERSAL Cable (M) Bhd is synonymous with cable and wire manufacturing in Malaysia.

Established in March 1967, the company has received many awards including the Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Manufacturing Excellence, Superbrands award, a BrandLaureate award, and awards by the International Trade and Industry Ministry for Export Excellence.

Universal Cable has a broad manufacturing portfolio of cable and wire products, which includes cables for advanced power and control, instrumentation and telecommunication.

It also produces aluminium rods and conductors, cables for the oil and gas industry and various types of specialty cables such as welding cables and automotive cables.

Its manufacturing plants are located in Pandan, Plentong and Tampoi in Johor, and Nilai in Negri Sembilan.

The company, which is the largest cable and wire manufacturer in Malaysia, places emphasis on compliance with international standards.

"We are aware of external dangers, yet we forget the one which we live with everyday -- the cables and wires in our homes," said Universal Cable managing director, Azman Yusoff.

Recently, a media tour was held in Universal Cable's Pandan plant in Johor Baru, which is 4.86 hectares in size and has a production capacity of 20,000km of cables per month.

The Pandan plant covers the widest range of products manufactured, such as the UniHome Housing Cables series that caters to residential and commercial use.

Depending on the size and application of the cable, the common manufacturing processes include drawing, stranding, insulation, cabling, armouring and sheathing of the conductor. Each layer provides distinctive characteristics and protection to the cable.

The plant is equipped with the latest and most comprehensive fire and quality control labs in Malaysia.
