Australia to probe asylum seeker suicides

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:10 PM PDT

SYDNEY: Australia said Friday it would probe the high number of suicides and self-harm incidents among asylum seekers in immigration detention centres, including at the strife-hit Christmas Island site.

The country's chief Ombudsman Allan Asher said he was alarmed about the impact of long-term detention on mental health after more than 1,100 cases of threatened or actual self-harm were reported in the first half of the year.

"I was myself on Christmas Island at the end of June and there were 30 incidents in that week, and then across Australia in the first week of July, 50 incidents," Asher told ABC television late Thursday.

"We think there is something seriously wrong that needs to be looked at." Australia has a policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers arriving by boat, but has softened its stance in recent years to allow more women and children into the community as their refugee claims are assessed.

The move has left centres, including the remote Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island, with a large population of males now separated from their families, said Louise Newman, chair of the Detention Health Advisory Group.

Newman said there have been five suicides in detention since September 2010, adding that almost every night one young man somewhere in the system attempts to hang himself.

"We all know that things are probably much worse in there then they have been for some time," Newman told AFP.

"We've seen virtually every night at the moment somewhere in the system is a near-miss suicide.

"We've had outbreaks of group self-harming behaviour, people joining together to harm themselves."

According to data obtained by the ABC, the situation has become so serious at Christmas Island that staff have been told to carry knives at all times so they can cut down detainees who have tried to hang themselves.

Inmates are also denied their own razors, the state broadcaster reported, saying that men who need to shave have to request a razor and then hand it back once they have finished.

The investigation into suicide and self-harm will look at the extent of the problem, gather demographic data about those involved as well as the length of time they spent in detention, and the potential roots of the behaviour.

The inquiry will also examine whether attempted or successful suicides and incidents of self-harm could trigger other incidents among inmates.

Newman said self-harming behaviour could be "very contagious".

"When you get a group of distressed people in a confined environment, things spread and escalate very rapidly," she said. -- AFP

16 workers die, 10 missing in Ukraine mine blast

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:07 PM PDT

KIEV: Sixteen miners died and another 10 were missing after a nighttime explosion in a coal mine in the Lugansk region in eastern Ukraine, the emergencies ministry said on Friday.

As a result of the early Friday accident, two more workers received burn injuries and were hospitalised, the ministry said in a statement.

"The fate of 10 miners remains unknown," said the Kiev-based emergencies ministry, adding that a total of 28 people worked at the mine when the explosion occurred at 1:57 am local time Friday.

A spokesman for the emergencies ministry's local branch in Luganks, speaking to AFP, cofirmed the number of dead.

He said however that three miners were hospitalised, while nine remained trapped in the coal mine. He could not say whether they were dead or alive.

Ukraine's energy minister Yury Boiko went to the scene of the accident at the Sukhodolskaya-Vostochnaya Coal Mine, part of the Krasnodonugol mining company, to personally take charge of the rescue operation.

Officials did not provide details on the cause of the blast. Most of the country's mine disasters have been caused by build-ups of methane gas.

Deadly accidents are frequent in the Ukrainian mines, most of which are located in the country's industrial eastern region. Many of the mines are underfunded and poorly equipped, while safety violations are rife. -- AFP

‘Accept all races’

Najib says concept of tolerance alone cannot foster unity

ALOR STAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak urged the people yesterday to "move from tolerance to acceptance" to bring greater unity in Malaysia's multiracial society.

He said the concept of tolerance alone was insufficient to foster mutual understanding among the communities.

"In the practice of tolerance, there are still walls that create different emotions, dividing the people.

"However, this is different from the concept of acceptance.A stronger bond and better understanding would be achieved if we learn to accept and acknowledge each other, regardless of our races," he said during a meetthe- people session at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 in Jalan Kuala Kedah near here.

Najib likened unity among the people to that of a football team that had players in various positions on the field.

"Similar to a football team during a match, people from various communities work closely together to help the team to victory. However, the team would lose if one of us scores an own goal.

"The value of acceptance of each other, regardless of the colour of our skin or how we look, is important to help boost development of our country." Najib said the concept of democracy practised in Malaysia had been adopted since the country gained independence in 1957 and criticised those who accused the government of denying them this as groups blind to history.

Najib later announced RM1.1 million in financial assistance from the Federal Government to seven Chinese schools and an association of former Chinese school students.

Three private schools — Sekolah Menengah Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa and Sekolah Menengah Sin Min here—will receive RM200,000 each. Four Chinese vernacular schools—Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chio Min in Kulim, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Keat Hwa 1 and Sekolah Menengah Keat Hwa II — will each receive RM100,000.

The Keat Hwa Former Students Association will receive RM100,000.

The allocations are to upgrade the premises and organise more school activities.

Earlier, Najib visited Al-Rahmah mosque in Taman Wira, Mergong, where he was briefed on the extension work for the mosque by senior principal assistant director in the Implementation Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister's Department, Ab Ghapar Daud.

Construction of a new wing for the 20-year-old mosque, costing RM1.12 million, is funded by the Federal Government and would begin next month. This will increase the mosque's capacity from 1,000 to 1,800.

Najib later went on his walkabout at the farmers' market in the housing estate.

I can take on Aziz anytime: Dr Zul

GUA MUSANG: Pas' candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed remained a good sport over jokes that his stocky frame might tire him fast during the campaign trail.

He said he was used to work long hours when he was a doctor at government hospitals in the past.

"There were times when I had to work over 36 hours on a stretch, then. I think I can keep up with the hectic campaign schedule now," he said.

Dr Zulkefli, 44, will be up against Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, in the Galas by-election on Nov 4.

Some segments of political watchers have been heard making comparisons between the two candidates of their physiques.

Such light banter follows an absence of substantive issues to debate since campaigning started on Nov 26.

Dr Zulkefli said he was feeling alright even when there were many places to visit over the past three days.

To keep fit, he said he took a lot of water and sufficient rest.

When a reporter asked about his weight, Dr Zulkefli said: "I do not know. Let us keep it as a secret."

In jest, he said he could take on Aziz in a running or tug-of-war competition.

Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures.
The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership.

A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself.

I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ".

Frankly how many can do that ?

This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example.

Traits of great leader who make small people feel great.

Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders.

It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count.

We should not trumpet about it.

High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah.

Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation.

Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible.

The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number.

In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ?

Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind.

My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise.

And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful.

The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered.

First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?.

Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ?

The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members.

However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants.

Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency, the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident.

Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different.

As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say, with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters.

From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess.

To me the annoucement seems to be made in conjunction with the coming BN convention in Kuala Lumpur in an effort to influence its outcomes

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 62.44 points (0.51 per cent) to close at 12,240.11. It has now fallen for five straight trading days amid jitters over the debt-ceiling deadlock. The broader SandP 500 fell 4.22 points (0.32 per cent) to 1,300.67, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite eked out a slight gain, rising 1.46 points (0.05 per cent) to 2,766.25. The US Treasury says that if the government's US$14.29 trillion debt ceiling is not raised by Tuesday, it could be forced to default on its debts, an outcome seen as all-but-certain to have ruinous effects on financial markets. But the standoff showed no signs of ending on Thursday as the Republican-led House of Representatives planned to vote on a debt-reduction plan which the Democrat-led Senate was almost certain to reject. "The market needs and wants to see more concrete evidence of a deal getting done," said Scott Marcouiller, chief market technical strategist for Wells Fargo Advisors. In a sign of Wall Street's alarm, the heads of more than a dozen US banks and major financial firms - including Citigroup, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs - wrote a joint letter to President Barack Obama and Congress appealing for a swift resolution. Stocks rallied early in the day after a surprisingly positive report on the US job market, but then fell back. The US Labour Department said new claims for unemployment benefits fell to 398,000 last week, their lowest level in nearly four months and the first time they had fallen below 400,000 since early April. Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil pulled down the Dow's average of 30 blue-chip stocks as it sank 2.2 per cent on a disappointing earnings report. The energy firm said that its second-quarter profits surged 41 per cent from last year to US$10.7 billion thanks to rising oil prices, but the results fell short of analysts' forecasts. Goodyear plunged 7.2 per cent after it reported record quarterly revenue of US$5.6 billion but also warned that growing inflation in emerging markets and high materials costs would cut into future earnings. Thomson Reuters gained 3.4 per cent after reporting that its profits nearly doubled to US$563 million in the second quarter. -- AFP Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by Used Car Search.

Football: Defensive blunder lets Malaysia down

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:32 PM PDT

2011/07/29
Reports by Ajitpal Singh and Devinder Singh
nstsport@nstp.com.my

THERE is no question where the blame lies for Malaysia's exit from the World Cup Asian zone qualifiers as far as Safee Sali is concerned.

Another defensive blunder in the second leg yesterday allowed Singapore to claim a 1-1 draw at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil and reach the third round on a 6-4 aggregate success.

The third round draw will be held in Brazil tomorrow.

Malaysia paid dearly for a catastrophic display in the first leg at the Jalan Besar Stadium where they lost 5-3. And even Safee's three goals over the two matches could not prevent the national team's premature exit in the qualifiers.

"This is a very disappointing result," said Safee after the game.

"I want to apologise to the Malaysian public and the fans here for our failure. We tried as hard as we could but after we led 1-0, we lost concentration in defence.

"It was yet another mistake by the defence which led to their goal," added Safee, who gave Malaysia hope when he drilled home a shot from the edge of the box in the 58th minute.

Questions will be raised over whether centre-back Aidil Zafuan Radzak was fit to start after having to be substituted with just 22 minutes, limiting coach K. Rajagobal's tactical options.

Muslim Ahmad came on to resume his partnership with Fadhli Shas but poor marking allowed Aleksandar Duric, so lethal in the first leg, to head backwards unchallenged to Shi Jiayi who had the easiest task of slotting to the right of goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat in the 72nd minute.

Had it not been for Fahmi, Malaysia could have been severely embarrassed with the goalkeeper pulling off two fine saves in the first half from Qiu Li and Duric, who were both aided by poor offside decisions of the assistant referee.

Fahmi produced a finger-tip save from a Shaiful Esah free-kick and then denied Qiu Li in a one-on-one situation to keep Malaysia in the game.

But even as Malaysia tried to push for the two goals they needed, substitute Ahmad Fakri Saarani's double booking ended the match as a contest.

"It's not the result I wanted, we should have won the match," said Rajagobal.

"At certain times we did well, I was happy with the second-half performance. When we got the first goal it was game on. We should have got the second but injuries (to Singapore players) delayed our momentum.

"With the (Singapore) players lying on the ground, it disrupted our tempo and flow. There is a lot of room for improvement, we had another lapse of concentration.

"Having to change Aidil probably didn't help the defence to settle down but we tried hard to attack."

The absence of captain Safiq Rahim through suspension and striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha through injury hit Malaysia hard.

"We did not have Safiq and Norshahrul. Going into the game in this situation was not easy.

"Credit should be give to the players for trying, they will learn from this. Also I want to thank the fans for having the belief in us and turning out in such big numbers."

Hockey: Nabil, Kelvinder help KL to title

KL players celebrate winning the Razak Cup title after beating Pahang 1-0 in the final at the Serindit Stadium in Malacca yesterday.

KL players celebrate winning the Razak Cup title after beating Pahang 1-0 in the final at the Serindit Stadium in Malacca yesterday.

THE lethal combination of Kelvinder Singh and Nabil Fiqri gave Kuala Lumpur their 19th Razak Cup title when they edged a fighting Pahang 1-0 at Bukit Serindit Stadium in Malacca yesterday.

KL looked lost during regulation play as they failed to break a stout Pahang defence, and the match went into extra-time.

Pahang, who have yet to lift the title after 49 attempts, looked deadly though Ismail Abu's counter-attacks during the first seven minutes of sudden-death play.

However, KL weathered the storm and gained control of the attack in the next half as Kelvinder came back onto the pitch after a breather.

Kelvinder's first pass to Nabil in the 80th minute was wasted as the latter failed to connect home.

However, a second reverse stick attempt from Kelvinder two minutes later found Nabil facing an open goal-mouth and he had the easiest of tasks to tap the ball in end KL's misery.

"It was our toughest match of the tournament but still, I'm proud of my players who kept their composure and never stopped playing until they nailed the winner," said KL coach I. Vickneswaran.

Meanwhile, Negri Sembilan were crowned Division Two champions when they edged Selangor 1-0.

The solitary goal by Azraie Azizan off a penalty corner attempt in the 48th minute was enough to earn Negri promotion to Division One next year.

"Selangor are a good team and they have speedy forwards. We knew we had to stop them especially down the middle if we are to have a chance. And it worked. I am happy for players. We have worked very hard in the entire tournament to emerge champions," said Negri coach S. Chandran.

"In doing so, we prove that being in the Second Division doesn't mean we have to give up hope. We fought all the way through and today's (yesterday's) win is ample reward."

RESULTS -- Div 1, Final: Kuala Lumpur 1 Pahang 0; 3rd-4th: Armed Forces 3 Terengganu 4.

Div 2, Final: Negri Sembilan 1 Selangor 0; 3rd-4th: Perlis 0 Kedah 3.

The arm-wrestling match was the star attraction at Karnival Gegaria Harian Metro recently

SOME 50,000 visitors thronged the open field at Plaza Angsana in Johor Baru recently to meet their favourite artistes like Hattan and Misha Omar at the two-day Harian Metro Karnival Gegaria concert.

One visitor, Zahrah Mustafa, 52, who was born and bred in Johor Baru, said she was happy to have the opportunity to join in the merriment of the carnival.

"My husband and I arrived before 10am so that we won't miss any of the activities lined up throughout the day," she said.

Another visitor, A. Aziz Ahmad, 60, said he and his family came to enjoy the revelry as the venue of the carnival was near their home.

"Besides the strategic location of the venue, it was also a wholesome family event comprising entertainment, shopping, recreational activities as well as a religious forum," said Aziz.

"I hope the organisers will continue to have such events which allow the public to get to know staff of Harian Metro in a fun-filled environment.

Harian Metro group editor Datuk Mustapa Omar and executive editor, Othman Mamat, were also present.

The booth where the arm-wrestling event was held on the first day of the event was a crowd-puller.

The newspaper's sports editor, Mohd Radzi Wahab, said the organisers included arm-wrestling as one of the highlights as they wanted to give the crowd something different.

"The arm-wrestling event, which offers cash prizes, was definitely a crowd pleaser as a total of 120 people signed up for the competition within an hour," he said.

Participants were divided into three groups -- those who weighed above 80kg, those weighing between 70kg and 80kg, and those 70kg and below.

The winner of each category walked away with RM500, while the second to fourth prizewinners won RM300, RM200 and RM100 respectively.

A songbird teaches the flock to soar

by Wai Ying Ching

I WAS born in Hong Kong. I am the sixth and second youngest child in the family.

My father was a businessman and my mother, a housewife.

My gift of song was nurtured from a young age. I sang at every available opportunity -- at home to entertain the family and at school during special events.

It was my older sister who first noticed my ability, and my eldest brother's influence that made me decide to become a soprano. He is a tenor who now lives in Canada.

My family enjoyed listening to English and Chinese music and among the favourite songs is Come back to Sorrento, composed in 1902 by Ernesto De Curtis and popularised by singers as diverse as Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Placido Domingo.

The two American stars Patti Page and Doris Day are among the family's all-time favourite singers.

I started playing the piano at 8. My last teacher taught me valuable lessons in the right attitude as well as how to use the mind and ears to become the perfect pianist.

As a teenager, I developed an interest in English and Italian songs.

At the age of 16, I trained under a Chinese female mezzo-soprano voice trainer and later under an Italian tenor, who is also a conductor.

I was pursuing my music degree majoring in vocals at National Taiwan Normal University when I met my husband-to-be Tan Hooi Song, who is from Johor.

After graduating, I taught music for 18 months in Taipei, Taiwan.

In 1974, I settled down with my husband in Serene Park, Johor Baru.

My husband was a talented musician. He was a composer and a conductor who could play various musical instruments. He was also a baritone and a creative teacher.

He taught at Foon Yew High School in Johor Baru. Sadly, he passed away three years ago.

I opened a music class at home and I have since taught about 300 students.

One of them turned out to be the best baritone in Taiwan and two won the first prize in the Malaysian Vocal Arts Competition last year.

Being a trainer and conductor keeps me busy, and I have never taken part in a music competition.

I did, however, have the chance to compose a Chinese song.

The teacher plays a big role in the student's development and I always emphasise that it is the love of music and not merely the certificate that is important.

I teach my students music, and I also teach them how to appreciate music.

I like Malay and Indian food especially roti canai, chapati and sup kambing. I love all kinds of curries.

I speak some Bahasa Malaysia.

My philosophy is to live a balanced life. The arts, especially music, offer the best relief for stress and are therapeutic.

Wai Ying Ching, 63, teaches at South Front Art and Music House in Stulang Laut. She has two children, who are also music professionals. Recently, they performed a music recital at Foon Yew High School.
