Johor Baru Senior Citizens Association held its inaugural Parents of the Year 2011 award recently

THE Johor Baru Senior Citizens Association (JBSCA) organised a Parents Day luncheon recently.

About 120 members attended the event which was organised by the association for the first time.

Guests-of-honour were Johor Baru member of parliament Datuk Seri Shahrir Abdul Samad and his wife Datin Seri Sharizat Abdullah.

Present to welcome the couple were JBCSA deputy chairman Francis Chaw and honorary secretary Soon Boon Keng.

Among the highlights were the Parents of the Year 2011 award.

There were also talks on ageing and the benefits of living at the Jeta Care Centre by retirement living consultant, Tan Choe Lam, and a line dance performance.

Lee Siew Yang, 83, and his wife Tan Sow Kooi, 83, were declared Parents of the Year.

Accompanied by their daughter, Cordelia Lee, the couple were thrilled when Shahrir congratulated them.

The couple were awarded a plaque and letter of commendation by the organisers.

Siew Yang thanked the organisers for choosing him and his wife as parents of the year.

"I love my wife and I will take care of her as long as I can," he said.

Cordelia, who stays in Kuching, Sarawak, was full of praise for her father.

"My mother has been bedridden for the past five years as she is suffering from Alzheimer's. My father has been taking care of my mum and he is so patient," said Cordelia, a 58-year-old grandmother of five.

Soon said Siew Yang has contributed a lot to the association and is an asset.

"Siew Yang has been a member of the club since 1990 and was JBSCA deputy president for three terms from 2004 to 2010," said Soon.

He attends almost all the programmes and seldom misses the committee's bi-monthly meetings.

Cordelia performed a solo dance backed by an a capella performance by Tan, who sang the evergreen Mandarin number, The Moon Represents My Heart.

Soon said unlike Mothers or Fathers Day, Parents Day was a momentous occasion, especially in the United States.

He said many families in the US thronged churches, mosques, temples, community halls and other places to celebrate the occasion.

Soon said though Parents Day is barely given any significance, the association has decided to celebrate the event on a grand scale.

In his talk, Tan spoke at length about the benefits of the Jeta Care Centre (JC).

Tan said JC is Malaysia's first aged care centre based on Australian concepts and Confucious's teachings.

The centre in Kulaijaya will begin operations soon. It boasts a resort-style living environment that includes a roof-top garden, cafe, hair salon, laundry service, kitchen and multipurpose hall.

There will be daily activities such as exercises, computer lessons, karaoke sessions and meals that cater to Asian, Western and vegetarian diets.

The rates are reasonable and an online banking system at the centre will allow senior citizens to withdraw cash with ease.

Shahrir lauded JBSCA's good work which does a lot to enhance the members' knowledge through its in-house programmes.

He termed the JBSCA members as "Otai" which literally means old timer. Shahrir said getting involved in gatherings such as the Parents Day event was a good move.

He advised members to be aware of their eating habits and stay healthy.

Tattoo gives suspect away

A TATTOO with a sun motif on the left thigh of a snatch theft suspect gave him away when police picked him up 48 hours after the crime was committed.

District police chief Superintendent Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the victim, Mohd Azhar Abd Ghani, 27, who is a son of a policeman, was riding his motorcycle when the suspect stopped him near Jalan Bukit Siput in Segamat.

The suspect was also on a motorcycle.

The suspect had allegedly asked for Azhar's identification card as he claimed that Azhar was riding a motorcycle that belonged to the suspect's relative.

"After the victim took out his wallet, the suspect snatched it and fled the scene," said Majid.

The suspect was later arrested at his house in Kampung Kadut in Jabi, near Segamat at about 1am on June 4.

The police also detained the 24-year-old owner of the motorcycle used by the suspect in the incident.

Majid said the arrests were possible because the victim had identified his assailant's tattoo.

He, however, denied that the tattoo links the suspect to any secret society.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect has three children and his wife is expecting their fourth child.

He has three previous records and was involved in a brawl, robbery and drug-related cases.

"The suspect works part-time as a helper at an apam balik stall at a night market in Segamat. With his arrest, police have solved at least six snatch theft cases in the district."

The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery. Those convicted would be caned and jailed up to 14 years.

37 detained over traffic summons scam

KOTA KINABALU: An international syndicate, which duped thousands of Chinese nationals into paying for non-existent traffic summonses, was busted in an upmarket neighbourhood here yesterday.

The syndicate members, comprising 10 Taiwanese and 27 Chinese, were nabbed at a fivebedroom condominium, which acted as their headquarters, near the Waterfront area.

This followed tip-offs from the police in Taiwan and China.

Officers from Bukit Aman federal police headquarters and Kepayan here also seized an assortment of electronic gadgets, mobile telephones and prepaid reload cards in the raid.

The gang members were having boiled noodles and fried eggs for lunch when the police raided the premises.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said initial investigations showed the group began operating here last month.

"They operated round the clock," said Syed Ismail, who inspected the main operations centre with state police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib.

A Taiwanese, believed to be the mastermind, was among those arrested. The 10 Taiwanese were all men while 13 of the 27 Chinese nationals were men.

All were aged between 23 and 56.

The group is believed to specialise in "spoofing", a term used to describe an Internet scam using voice-operated Internet protocol. Syed Ismail said the group ran its scam by calling individuals in China to inform them they had been issued summonses and were being sought after by the court.

"From there, they would provide information to the victim on how they could deal with the problem before convincing them to pay to an online account," Syed Ismail said.

"Several of the suspects are technicians and managers who supervised the operations. The rest of the syndicate members were call operator s," he said. He pointed out that the call operators would follow a standard script to help them convince the victims that they were being sought by the authorities.

"The case is being investigated for cheating. We are liaising with our counterparts in Taiwan and China to ascertain the extent of the syndic at e 's operations here," he said.

He said the syndicate had been active in China and Taiwan but decided to move its operations to foreign countries when the authorities there got wind of its activities.

Syed Ismail also revealed that so far this year, police had received 104 reports on Internet scams, involving a total of RM7.9 million.

Last year, there were 1,201 cases involving more than RM20 million while the year before that, the amount stood at RM4.3 million from 333 cases.

Another held over match rigging

KUALA TERENGGANU: A Singaporean is the latest to be hauled up for investigation into alleged match-fixing involving the T-Team in last seasons President's Cup.

The four-day remand order, applied for by the state's Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, was granted by a senior assistant registrar.

A source close to the investigation told the New Straits Times that the suspect was nabbed in Negri Sembilan on Tuesday. However, the source was tight-lipped over details of the suspect's involvement, as the probe was still in its early stage.

The source said some 20 players, a coach, and a team official had been called in to provide their statements at the state MACC office since last week.

The floodgates into the scandal opened following the confession of a former team manager, Mohd Sabri Abas, who revealed the involvement of at least eight players who allegedly fixed matches in the President's Cup last season.

The source said the eight players had their contracts terminated with the league but the team management had yet to file a report with the authorities.

Following Sabri's confession, a T-Team coach, who declined to be named, had exposed a number of players who admitted to having received money in exchange for match-fixing.

The coach said he had been contacted by an individual, who claimed to be a bookie, before being given the names of the players involved in the scandal along with the amount of money that the players received.

Upon receiving the call, the coach went ahead and probed the bookie's claims by checking the account balances of the players involved and found that some contained balances of up to RM27,000, an amount which the coach said could not be justified by the players.

The coach also said the matter was brought up to the team management who terminated the players' contracts without informing the authorities.

The players, however, have been summoned by the MACC to have their statements recorded.

On Monday, the coach of the Negri Sembilan President's Cup football team, Yusarman Yusof was accused of rigging a match and was charged with 21 counts of bribery involving RM24,900 at the Sessions Court.

Yusarman, 35, was suspended from his duties last month and was charged under Section 16 (b) (A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

He faces a maximum 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, or whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Yusarman claimed trial.

XOX slides on KL listing debut

XOX Bhd, a Malaysian mobile telecommunications services provider, fell on its debut on the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange.

The stock dropped 12 per cent to 70.5 sen at 9:02 a.m. local time.

RCE Cap fair value lifted, stock climbs

RCE Capital Bhd, a Malaysian consumer credit provider, rose the most in more than six months in Kuala Lumpur trading after RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd raised its fair value for the stock to RM1.10.

Bleaching of two million illegal immigrants begin July 1

KOTA BAHARU: The Home Ministry will initiate a programme of bleaching or pardoning for almost two million illegal immigrants in the country starting July 1, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong.

In this context, he said the recruitment of foreign workers during that
period will be temporarily frozen to ensure that the nationwide programme runs
smoothly.

"We are freezing all foreign worker applications for the programme which
begins on July 1. We have also shortlisted 200 private companies which will be

involved in managing the illegal immigrants," he told reporters after presenting
certificates of citizenship to 14 people, who applied to become Malaysian
citizens since last year, at Kopitiam Kita here today.

He said the ministry's 6P amnesty programme was carried out by registering
illegal immigrants using a biometric system to track their movements in the
country.

The programme, he added, involved six action plans which are registering,

legalising, pardoning, monitoring, enforcing and deporting illegal
immigrants.

Lee said the objective of the bleaching exercise was to collect data on how
many illegal immigrants are in the country, how many work in sectors allowed to
recruit foreigners and to give illegal immigrants a chance to go home without
being prosecuted, as decided by the Cabinet.

He said the 200 companies interested in managing the registration of illegal
immigrants submitted application forms downloaded from the website
www.moha.gov.my.

Lee said only companies with experience in human resource management and
foreign workers will be selected, while orgnisations and associations will only
involve their employers and need to be registered with the Registrar of
Societies.

"There are 1.9 million foreigners working legally in the country, but our
information shows that the number of illegal immigrants is more than that with
about two million people in total," he added. - Bernama

Samsung's Lee says corruption spread group-wide

SEOUL: Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics Co, said Thursday that corruption is widespread in Samsung Group, signalling that he may order a group-wide audit and a far-reaching management reshuffle.

"Samsung Techwin was a coincidence (that irregularities were found). It seems that corruption is widespread in all Samsung affiliates," Yonhap News agency quoted Lee as saying.

He said this to reporters as he arrived at the company's office in southern
Seoul.

The remarks from South Korea's wealthiest man came after a chief executive
officer at Samsung Techwin Co, the group's arms-making unit, offered to resign
after an internal audit found improper behaviors by employees.

Samsung officials declined to discuss details of the audit and what prompted
the chief to resign.

Infuriated by the audit results, Lee reprimanded his senior executives and
ordered to beef up the auditing team to uproot corruption, Samsung's chief

spokesman said Wednesday.

Lee, the son of the Samsung Group founder, hinted that he may intensify an
internal probe and a personnel reshuffle may be in the offing.

"I've been worried, so I'm trying to make this an issue," he said.

"Corruption can entail getting favors or grafts, but the worst kind is to grill
staff members to force them to do improper activities."

Lee, a reclusive leader who usually works from his Seoul residence, began

PSD scholars who break bonds without paying risk court action

KUALA LUMPUR: Scholarship recipients who owe the Public Service Department (PSD) more than RM30,000 as principal sum payable for breaching their contracts will be issued bankruptcy notices. The notice can also be issued to the defaulter's guarantors, which in cases like these were usually the student's parents or relatives.

For those who owe less than RM30,000, a judgment debtor summons will be issued.

These defaulters will have to pay the amount either in lump sums or instalments, depending on the court's order If the defaulter fails to obey the court order, the person may be sent to prison.

Attorney-General's Chambers civil division, execution and enforcement unit head Mohammad Al-Saifi Hashim said they were currently processing 195 such cases.

He said scholarship holders were contractually bonded with the PSD to perform certain duties, such as serving in a certain institution upon completing their sponsored studies.

"When we receive a case from the PSD where a student has breached the contract, we will bring the defaulter and or their guarantors to court to obtain a judgment." Al-Saifi said from there, those owing more than RM30,000 would be issued bankruptcy notices. "Once the defaulter is declared bankrupt, the case will be forwarded to the Insolvency Department," he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

Al-Saifi said a person who has been declared bankrupt would have many restrictions imposed on him. "For example, a bankrupt person cannot take further loans or go overseas without the permission of the depar tment's director-general or the court.

"The director-general also has the power to sell off a bankrupt person's property in order to settle their debts. " Al-Saifi said those who failed to service their judgment debtor summons would be brought to a committal proceeding.

He said a committal proceeding might result in the defaulter being sent to prison.

Al-Saifi said so far no one had been sent to jail for breaching scholarship contracts or for defaulting on study loans.

He said, however, that the laws were already in place and enforcement would be exercised if the need arose.

Around 500 scholars had not fulfilled their contract with PSD since 2000 until last year.

PSD issued 4,000 scholarships this year, including 1,500 for overseas degree programmes.

Itwas reported earlier that most of those who were reluctant to return to uphold their end of the contract had studied in universities in Europe and the United States.

The scholarships for students studying there ranged from RM400,000 to RM1.2 million each.

The government over the past several years had allocated about RM1.2 billion for 1,500 overseas scholarships.

Agents to help register, legalise foreign workers

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will recruit agents to help facilitate in registering and legalising the illegal immigrants in the country.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said under the new programme, the immigrants would be registered using the biometric fingerprint scanning system before being re-assigned to the sectors which needed the foreign labour.

"Their biometric details will be taken and they must return to their home countries when their stay expires," he said after officiating the sponsorship presentation of the second General Police Special Equipment Exhibition and Convention (GPEC) Asia 2011 at the Putrajaya Maritime Centre yesterday.

Hishammuddin urged companies, associations and bodies keen to become agents to apply online on the ministry's official website but warned that strict vetting would be carried out to ensure only genuine agents were appointed.

"The companies should not act as outsourcing companies as their role is to help the government reach out to the illegal immigrants. We wish to avoid similar problems faced in the past when we outsourced these tasks.

"Enough of taking advantage of innocent people, regardless of whether they are foreign or local,"Hishammuddin said.

Also present at the event were ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

The biometric fingerprint scanning system, which was implemented on June 1, requires foreigners entering and leaving the country to have both index fingers scanned at entry and exit points, instead of just having their passports stamped. It is now implemented at 96 entry points in the country.

Yesterday, the Home Ministry's immigration affairs department issued a statement on a "total solution programme for illegal immigrants", where companies, associations and bodies were invited to become agents in facilitating the registration process of illegal immigrants.

The programme which include registering and providing amnesty, is aimed collecting statistics on the illegal immigrant population in the country and to allow them to go home without being penalised.

Latexx raised to 'trading buy' at CIMB

Latexx Partners Bhd, a Malaysian rubber glove maker, was raised to "trading buy" from "neutral" at CIMB Investment Bank Bhd after the company agreed to a revised offer to merge with the YTY group.

The share estimate was increased to RM2.60 from RM2.28, Kuala Lumpur-based analyst Terence Wong wrote in a report today.

The stock rose to its highest level in almost three weeks in Kuala Lumpur trading, gaining 3.1 per cent to RM2.34 at 9:03 a.m. local time, set for its highest close since May 23. -- Bloomberg
