Malaysia's Safee Sali hopes to build on his club form to score his first international goal of the year today.

MALAYSIA are eager to carry their AFF Cup-winning form into the Asia Zone World Cup Qualifiers where they hope to start their campaign on a positive note against Taiwan in a first round first leg match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Coach K. Rajagobal has named a formidable 23-man squad that include 14 players from the AFF Cup team. The coach acknowledges the praise for Malaysia following their AFF Cup performance but he wants to put that aside and look forward to "a new chapter".

"It will be our first tournament after winning the AFF Cup. Everyone is eager and excited about tomorrow (today). We need to focus and play at our best level for a good result," said Rajagobal after a team managers' meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

"We made history by winning the AFF Cup. I told my boys, 'let's make bigger history in the World Cup Qualifiers'.

"We want to beat Taiwan. If we play well, we will get the goals. It does not matter if the final score is 1-0 as long we win. My players are mentally and physically prepared for the match."

Except for first choice goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, the others are injury-free. Khairul, who is down with a shoulder problem, may not be named in the starting line-up.

The Kelantan player has kept his training light since reporting for national duty after the second round, second leg of the Olympic Qualifiers against Lebanon last Thursday.

Rajagobal, however, declined to reveal whether second-choice Sharbinee Allawee will replace Khairul today.

"I need to look at him (Khairul) again before making a decision. Those who were nursing injuries have recovered from them."

Among those returning from injuries are strikers Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Ahmad Fakri Saraani and Abdul Hadi Yahya. The trio, however, may not be match-fit but Rajagobal has options in Safee Sali and Baddrol Baktiar.

Safee will be the striker the national team will be counting on today. The AFF Cup top-scorer has been outstanding since joining Indonesia Super League club Pelita Jaya, where he has scored seven goals in 13 appearances. However, he sustained a light leg injury in training yesterday.

However, Safee hopes to build on his club form to score his first international goal of the year today.

The national team, who have never qualified for the World Cup, are undefeated in three international friendly matches since winning the AFF Cup.

Captain Safiq Rahim said he and his teammates are hungry for success in the World Cup Qualifiers.

"Our target is to go as far as possible in the qualifiers. We are eager to make an impression. Everyone is mentally prepared for this challenge," said Safiq, who plays for Super League side Selangor.

"We have gone through all the required drills and also watched Taiwan's recent matches on video. As far as we are concerned, we have done our homework on our East Asian rivals."

Probable line-up: Sharbinee Allawee, Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak, Mohd Muslim Ahmad, Asraruddin Putra Omar, Mahalli Jasuli, Safiq Rahim, Amar Rohidan, S. Kunanlan, Amirulhadi Zainal, Safee Sali, Baddrol Baktiar.

Cycling: Arfy prepares for junior world stage

Arfy will have two months to prepare for the World Junior Track Championships in Moscow.

HAVING won the Malaysia Games keirin gold medal and boosted his home state Malacca's development programme with that, Arfy Qhairant Amran now has bigger fish to fry.

The 18-year-old Asian junior 200m sprint champion, who moved into the national elite squad's training base in Melbourne last week, leads the charge of the new breed of riders who form the nucleus of the 2016 Olympic programme.

As his first task, Arfy will have two months to prepare for the World Junior Track Championships in Moscow on Aug 17-21.

Having qualified by virtue of his Asian title, Arfy is expected to be joined by Selangor's Hamdan Hamidun in Moscow. Arfy will contest the 1km time trial, 200m sprint and keirin, while Hamdan will line up for the points and scratch races.

Arfy left for Melbourne last week along with Fattah Amri Zaid and Mohd Elmi Jumari, which hints of a new team sprint line-up under development.

National track team manager Datuk Naim Mohamad said the juniors will have a longer, more elaborate preparation to be ready for the 2016 Olympics qualifying procedure.

"But it is also up to them to prove that they can make the cut, as along the way the others in the Pelapis programme might also step up their game and will have to be given opportunities," said Naim.

"Arfy has shown potential and should be coming up with strong performances in the World Junior Championships.

"He has already had the experience last year, so this time he should know what to expect.

"He'll also be going to Moscow better prepared this time around, so we have hopes of a good outing, maybe even medals from both the riders."

"This incentive is to encourage investment for increased national petroleum production and help reduce the management cost of the upstream petroleum industry to attract more exploration activities as well as oilfield development," he said. The Securities Commission (Amendment) Bill 2011 tabled by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai was also passed by the Dewan Rakyat. Indonesia and Singapore have increased monthly shipments of biodiesel to a combined 150,000 tons, with potential for further growth, Oil World said. "The increasing requirements of soya oil for biodiesel production in Argentina, Brazil and the USA will curb the growth in soya oil exports in 2011-12," Oil World said. U.S. soy-oil exports have dropped because of higher domestic requirements for biodiesel production, according to the researcher. 35 illegal immigrants held after chase at sea

A 20-MINUTE chase involving two vessels at sea ended in a minor collision and the arrest of 35 illegal immigrants off the coast of Pasir Gogok, near Pengerang,
early on June 23.

A Marine Operations Force (MOF) patrol boat was chasing a fibreglass boat making its way out of Malaysian waters with 29 Indonesian men, six Indonesian women and two skippers on board.

Region 2 MOF commander Assistant Commissioner Zainul Abidin Hasan said the patrol boat was conducting Operasi Octopus at 3.30am when it spotted the boat moving in a suspicious manner about two nautical miles off Pasir Gogok.

The stretch off Pasir Gogok is a strait separating Pengerang, Johor, from Pulau Tekong, Singapore. The fibreglass boat sped off as the MOF patrol team approached.

"The patrol team directed the boat to stop, but it did not do so," said Zainul Abidin in a statement.

A brief chase ensued as the patrol boat tried to corner the speeding vessel.

The chief patroller on the MOF boat also ordered for 10 shots of very light pistol to be released into the air to light up the area.

At one point, the two boats were side by side and grazed each other.

Zainul Abidin said the impact of the minor collision caused one of the Indonesian male immigrants to sustain a minor hand injury. He was later brought to a clinic for treatment.

"After a 20-minute chase, the boat was successfully apprehended," he said.

The chase ended when a slight collision took place. In a desperate attempt to make a getaway, the two skippers jumped into the sea, abandoning their craft and passengers.

Zainul Abidin said another MOF patrol boat was deployed to search for the two missing skippers, but to no avail.

The MOF detained all 35 Indonesians and seized the 30mby- 5m fibreglass boat and two Yamaha 200 HP engines.

The illegal immigrants have been detained at the Kota Tinggi police headquarters.

The case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959 (amended 2002) for leaving or entering the country via an unregistered point, and Section 6(1) of the same act for not having any valid travel documents.

Close shave for passengers during bus mishap

MOTORISTS in Johor Baru were stuck in traffic congestion that lasted more than
two hours on June 23 after a stage bus landed on its side and blocked the path
along Jalan Skudai, near Danga Bay.

It was a close shave for the six passengers on board who escaped with only minor injuries from the 6.30am incident.

The bus driver, however, suffered injury on his legs and was sent for treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

It is believed that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle before it skidded and ended up on its right side.

Johor Baru South police chief, Assistant Commissioner Zainuddin Yaacob said it was raining when the bus was making its way from the city centre to Skudai and was on the Skudai-bound lane of the dual carriageway.

A police MPV arrived at the scene and took 15 minutes to get the driver and passengers out.

Despite police efforts to handle the traffic, a two-hour traffic snarl extended a few kilometres along both lanes of Jalan Skudai. —By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

An exhibition honours the Chinese admiral whose exploits preceded that of European explorers such as Columbus

THE epic journeys of Chinese explorer Admiral Cheng Ho should serve as an inspiration to the modern generation, especially youths.

Making a total of seven voyages between 1405 and 1433, Cheng Ho's journeys weren't aggressive expeditions to conquer other lands, but attempts to forge peaceful ties with other nations.

Cheng Ho's exploits preceded those of the great European navigators such as Columbus and Magellan by nearly a century.

His mission, like theirs, was driven by a desire to expand trade and discover new worlds, but while the Western powers linked trade to territorial acquisition, Cheng Ho focused on trade ties based on diplomatic relations premised on respect for sovereignty.

Cheng Ho visited more than 30 countries in Asia and Africa in his voyages. In Malaysia, he visited Malacca, Kelantan and Pahang.

In Malacca, there is amuseum called the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum opened in 2005.

The museum has an average of 25,000 visitors a month, according to International Zheng He Society president Dr Tan Ta Sen.

At the Legacy of Admiral Cheng Ho's Expedition and its Impact on Asia exhibition, which kicked off at the Sutera Mall in Johor Baru on June 18, visitors can gain a wealth of knowledge about the voyages of exploration by the famed explorer who was a Muslim born in the Yunnan province of China in 1371.

The voyages had fleets of treasure, horse, supply and battle ships, among others.

The power and size of the ships were the best in the world at the time.

Studies reveal the fleets could make a formation resembling a flying swallow. Each voyage consists of about 200 ships with a crew of more than 27,000.

Visitors can also buy a book compiled in conjunction with the event.

Priced at RM15 per copy, it gives intricate details of Cheng Ho's travels.

According to the book, the voyages were politically motivated as well as diplomatic in nature to promote foreign trade.

It also disseminated the Chinese culture and promoted cultural exchange between China and Afro-Asian nations.

It was also to conduct scientific maritime exploration in uncharted frontiers.

Cheng Ho brought back to China many foreign elements which enriched the Chinese culture.

Among them were produce from Southeast Asia, consisting mainly of spices and medicinal herbs as well as birds' nest from Borneo.

Among the medicinal plants he brought back were the wugu tree, cherry apple, and gaharu wood.

His returning ships were also laden with spices such as laka wood, sandalwood, lavender incense, cloves and pepper.

Meanwhile, Chinese perfumes such as musk, camphor and rhubarb were introduced to foreign folk through the exchange of trade.

Cheng Ho also spread traditional Chinese therapy such as acupuncture, detachable stove chimney, therapeutic baths and massages to Southeast Asia.

Sutera Mall senior centre manager Goh Lak Jin, who was at the opening ceremony, said they are targeting for 100,000 visitors to attend the month-long event.

"Many of our exhibits and the miniature replica of ships were sourced from the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum," said Goh.

"Sutera Mall staff spent half a year gathering the details and historical background concerning Cheng Ho and his expeditions for the visitors.

"We want to educate students about the expeditions of the Chinese explorer and have sent out letters of invitation to all primary and secondary schools in Johor Baru in the hope that they would visit the exhibition ," he said.

Goh added that the organisers, comprising Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd and Sutera Mall, have also lined up a series of competitions for primary and secondary school students.

These included Chinese calligraphy, speeches, and Chinese chess and photography.

There will also be cultural performances and talks by researchers from Malaysia, Singapore and China.

The event was declared open by Pengkalan Rinting state assemblyman Chia Song Cheng.

Also present were Federation of Tiong Hua Association Johor Baru deputy president Tan Liang Soong and Johor state education department Chinese language deputy director Lee Gek Ser.

THE management of the Senai-Desaru Expressway has been urged to fence the highway to prevent wild animals from crossing it.

It is learnt that the wild animals were commonly spotted at night.

A couple in a car almost rammed into a wild boar just three kilometres before the Penawar toll plaza about 3am recently.

Mohd Aruf Ahmad, 25, and his wife Azlina Adam, 25, were enjoying the panoramic view along the newly-built stretch when the incident occurred.

"I was driving at 80kph when a wild boar darted across the road. To avoid hitting it, I swerved but lost control of my vehicle.

"Luckily, there wasn't any vehicles in the opposite direction, otherwise we could have been killed," he said.

As a result of the accident, the water tank, air conditioning system, axle and bumper were damaged.

Mohd Aruf said fencing the highway would help prevent wild animals from encroaching on it.

"I slowly drove to the toll plaza but my plea for compensation from the toll operator was rejected," he claimed, estimating the damage to his vehicle at RM2,000.

Mohd Aruf also claimed that his friend ran into a stray dog around the same area the next day.

‘Keep to electoral process’<br><small>BN does not manipulate polls, rally organisers told</small>

KUALA LUMPUR: The prime minister yesterday urged the organisers of the Bersih 2.0 rally to participate in the electoral process, citing Pas' long rule of Kelantan and Barisan Nasional's defeat in five states in 2008 as unmistakable proof of a free and fair process.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak said BN would rule in all the states if the Election Commission had manipulated votes on behalf of the coalition.

The BN chairman, who was speaking at the 58th People's Progressive Party general assembly, also delivered a decisive message to the rally organisers.

"If you have the guts, fight in the general election. If there is any chaos, you will face the consequences," he said.

And referring to those intending to take part in the rally, Najib said they, too, would have to face any consequences. The rally was reportedly being held to pass a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong calling for free and fair elections.

"They say it is to stop the manipulation of votes.

"If we manipulate votes, then why are there five states under the opposition? How did Pas rule Kelantan for so many years?" Specifically referring to the loose grouping of DAP, Pas and Parti Keadilan Rakyat, which supposedly endeavoured to "correct the voting system in the country", Najib said: "They need to correct their own parties first before correcting the Election Commission. During their so-called reformasi meetings, they were known to throw chairs, coupled with incidences of boxing matches." He said BN would rule the country if the people still supported it.

"The power is with the people. We will fight till the end. And we will do it according to the law, which is to protect the interest of the people." He said the recent spate of by-elections and the Sarawak election showed the people's support returning to BN. "We have managed to reverse the trend. Our plans for the economy have worked" He said the recent victories in Merlimau, Tenang, Kerdau and other areas proved BN as a product and a brandwas still supported by the people.

Independent studies and research showed BN was on the right track as there was clarity of goals, vision and strateg ic plans to achieve developed nation status.

"We will always be with the rakyat.

And we will fulfil our promises."

HULU SELANGOR: The Home Ministry has not ruled out the possibility of detaining those involved in the Bersih 2.0 Rally under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the ministry would not discriminate when it came to enforcing the law.

"It does not matter if it is Bersih, Perkasa or Umno Youth -- anyone who is found to be a threat to national security can be detained under the ISA," he said yesterday.

"For the time being, other laws can be utilised. We have not reached that level yet. We will monitor the situation," Hishammuddin, who is also the Umno vice-president, said after opening the Hulu Selangor Umno division meeting.

He said the ministry's responsibilities were to ensure the country's state of peace was maintained.

"We cannot allow some quarters to exploit matters that could jeopardise our country's sovereignty."

In Pasir Gudang, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin reminded undergraduates at institutions of higher learning to refrain from getting involved in illegal assemblies.

He said this when asked on the possibility of undergraduates participating in the planned rally on July 9 in Kuala Lumpur.

"I believe the undergraduates can judge what is right or wrong when it comes to such an activity, because the main purpose the government provides tertiary education is for them to think rationally.

"I hope they do not make the wrong decision by getting involved in the illegal assembly to avoid being trapped in a political game," he said after launching the Attack Pasir Gudang community programme by students of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka here yesterday.

Sumitomo becomes 24th member of ABM

KUALA LUMPUR: Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp Malaysia Bhd (SMBC) has joined the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) as its 24th member.

SMBC is the 15th locally-incorporated international bank operating in Malaysia under ABM's list of member banks.

"With its long-standing history and expertise in banking, we're confident that SMBC will make an impactful presence in the commercial banking sector," ABM executive director, Chuah Mei Lin, said in a statement today.

Hospitals performing sex-change probed

NEW DELHI: Indian authorities are probing doctors and hospitals involved in sex-change surgery performed on young girls in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has directed the state officials to investigate genitoplasty cases in Indore, a commercial city, after the media exposed parents wanting male children resorted to such illegal surgery.

"There should be a medical board to decide if the surgery is medically required.

"It has to be a responsible decision made by a panel and not a decision between a parent and a doctor," said Prof Gautam Sen, a member of the board of governors of the Medical Council of India, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Genitoplasty is a corrective surgery performed on those born with genital abnormality, but in Indore it was being exploited.

According to the newspaper, young girls between one and five years old had undergone genitoplasty and about 200 to 300 cases were performed in Indore.

Each surgery costs about RM10,000.

Alarmed by the incidents, NCPCR has urged state authorities to compile data on medical practitioners and hospitals involved in genitoplasty. -- BERNAMA

GUA MUSANG: The health ministry has allocated RM1.1 million to the Kelantan state government to implement rural water development projects to ensure people living in rural areas receive clean and adequate water supply.

Deputy health minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Shirlin said the projects consist of
controlled wells, feed gravity system as well as piped connection from Syarikat
Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

"The allocation is channelled to state health department to implement the projects," she said after attending the handing-over of the projects to Sungai

Terah residents here.

She said to date, Kelantan received 84.7 per cent of clean water supply
encompassing 223,115 households.

Only 40,212 households have yet to have clean water supplied by the ministry or
by AKSB. She expressed hopes that Gua Musang will receive 100 per cent water supply as soon as possible. To ensure the water is safe for consumption, she adviced residents to follow a few simple rules, namely:

Boil water before drinking;
The wells and feed gravity system need to be chlorinated periodically to kill off bacteria and reduce contamination risk; and
Trees or plants near water catchment areas should not be cut down to prevent the water source from drying up.

She also said this year, Kelantan has recorded six cholera, 28 typhoid and 2,168

food poisoning cases to date.

"These diseases still pose a risk to rural folk," she said.

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's achievements since taking over the mantle of the country last April had received praise from MCA.

In commending Najib for his hard work, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said Barisan Nasional's victories in the Nov 4 Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections were due to the people's acceptance of Najib's 1Malaysia concept.

Dr Chua said the Chinese were pragmatic people who will support the Prime Minister for doing what is good for the country.

"MCA is confident the results (of two by-elections) will serve as momentum to regain support of the community for the next general election," he said after opening a RM500,000 building and a hall in the SJKC Chung Hwa 3 last Thursday.

The speech was made on Dr Chua's behalf by Johor MCA secretary Tay Puay Chuan, who is also MCA Muar division chief.

Dr Chua said Najib's assurance that BN pledges in Galas and Batu Sapi would be fulfilled was a positive step to win the trust and confidence of the people.

He said by making continuous changes, BN would become a party that will received strong support.

"The victory of the two by-elections is an indication that BN's is ready and will do well in the next general election."

Dr Chua also said the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was a clear-cut strategy and a roadmap towards making Malaysia a high-income economy.

Earlier, deputy youth and sports minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also the Muar MP, said investment in education was not measured by ringgit and sen but by quality.
