Europe crisis clouds Malaysia key rate call Posted: 05 Jul 2011 06:28 PM PDT Europe's debt crisis and signs of a slowdown in global growth are complicating Malaysia's decision on interest rates as a pickup in inflation coincides with dimming prospects for export gains. Bank Negara Malaysia will raise its benchmark overnight policy rate to 3.25 percent from 3 percent at its fourth meeting of the year, according to 10 of 15 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The rest expect no change. The central bank will release its policy decision at 6 p.m. in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. The likely discussion tomorrow may echo debates across the Asia-Pacific region, which has led global growth and where policy makers have enacted the steepest increases in borrowing costs. While India, South Korea and Thailand opted to raise their key rates last month, China and the Philippines asked lenders to set aside more cash as reserves instead. "The rates call is 50-50," said Matthew Circosta, an economist at Moody's Analytics in Sydney. "Bank Negara Malaysia will be mulling global worries against domestic inflation pressures." European finance ministers have authorized an 8.7 billion- euro ($12.6 billion) loan payout to Greece by mid-July, pulling the country back from the brink of default and gaining time to hammer out a formula for ending the debt crisis. Economic growth in the U.S. slowed to a 1.9 percent annual pace in the first quarter from 3.1 percent in the previous three months and the unemployment rate has climbed back above 9 percent. Over Adjustment? Malaysia's inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in more than two years in May as consumer prices rose 3.3 percent. Bank Negara has raised the benchmark rate by a percentage point since the beginning of March 2010 to curb inflation, most recently a quarter-point increase at the last meeting in May. Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said last month central banks around the world should be wary of an "over adjustment" in their response to faster inflation. Malaysia has raised rates four times and doesn't want to overreact, she said in an interview with Reuters Insider. Banks are charging each other 30 basis points more than the benchmark policy rate for three-month loans, according to the Kuala Lumpur Interbank Offered Rate, signaling expectations for higher interest rates and bank reserve requirements. Interest rate swap forwards show traders are pricing in 43 basis points'increase in lending rates between September and June next year. The Malaysian ringgit has jumped more than 6 percent against the dollar in the past year, and reached 2.9598 against the U.S. currency on May 2, the strongest level in 13 years. It traded at 3.0088 as of 6 p.m. local time yesterday. Power Prices Officials may also consider increasing the statutory reserve requirement level to 4 percent from 3 percent, nine of 14 economists predict. The central bank last raised the reserve requirement in May, saying it was a "pre-emptive" measure to manage a "significant" buildup of liquidity. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's government allowed national power distributor Tenaga Nasional Bhd. to raise electricity charges for the first time in almost three years in June, adding to price pressures for business and consumers. "Inflationary pressures are expected to continue to climb," said Daniel Wilson, an analyst at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. in Singapore. "Demand-side pressures will be fuelled by a tightening labor market and positive consumer sentiment. We believe the proactive Bank Negara Malaysia will hike rates." Mohd Taufik, 21, died after being knocked down by an unknown motorist at 2½ mile Jalan Skudai along Lido Beach last week. The victim's stepfather, Omar Mohd Jam, said Taufik, who worked as a despatch assistant for the Syariah Court office at the Pusat Islam in Johor Baru, left his office around 2.30pm on June 27 on a motorcycle. "As he moved past the junction of his office along Jalan Skudai, a fast-moving car hit Taufik who was thrown off from his motorcycle. The motorist sped off quickly to avoid being traced. "Taufik was immediately rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival," said Omar, who was informed of the incident by police at his Taman Skudai Kanan low-cost flat. Omar was speaking to an entourage of sympathisers led by Johor Baru Umno Youth chief, Khalid Mohamed. Omar's wife, Junainah Hussein, said that her late son was obedient and affectionate towards his seven siblings. "It's sad that he left us so unexpectedly. He had recently celebrated his birthday on June 19 and secured a reliable job only three months ago," said the teary-eyed Junainah. Taufik was also a loyal member of the Skudai Kanan Umno Youth branch. The bereaved family was grateful to officers from the Johor Religious Department for their assistance in the burial of Mohd Taufik. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Khalid who is also a Johor Baru city council member, hoped the police would speed up their investigations so that the culprit would be brought to trial. IN 2009, KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH) started holding prenatal classes for expectant mothers on every third Saturday of the month. The 2pm-to-5pm class is the initiative of consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Mohanraj Krishnasamy working in collaboration with Dr Lim Keng Joo and a team of registered nurses. Participation is not limited to JSH patients but open to first-time expectant mothers from other hospitals, private clinics and maternity homes. "This is the most important event in their lives and it's good for first-time parents to be better informed so that they can cope better," said Dr Mohanraj as he welcomed parents with their babies and toddlers to JSH's first antenatal reunion party. He recalled how the class started with a small group of eight to 10 participants, who were usually accompanied by their husbands. He said it was encouraging to see a record number of 15 participants in the June class and hoped the JSH prenatal class would develop into a premier quality class to benefit more expectant mothers in Johor Baru. Since its inception, the class has helped more than 100 first-time parents by guiding them through pregnancy, delivery and care of the newborn. The alumni appeared quite experienced as they arrived at the reunion party with prams, pushcarts, baby bottles and diapers, eager for some fun and games. Many of the proud parents and babies were accompanied by doting grandparents. "Enjoy them before they grow up and leave home," said JSH executive director and chief executive officer Norita Ahmad, referring to the empty nest syndrome that parents experience when their children leave home to study or work. When the scores were tallied, 5-month old Keisha Nur Damia Muhammad Zikri, daughter of Nor Syazila Muin and Muhammad Zikri Sukardi, won the prize for Best Baby Costume. The same father-and-daughter team bagged the prize for the Diaper Changing contest when Zikri changed his daughter's diaper in less than 15 seconds. Sea Games participant list out after July 27 Posted: 04 Jul 2011 10:29 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is expected to announce the actual number of participants for the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia after the OCM selection committee meeting. OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said Malaysia had submitted a list by numbers, estimated at 1,000 participants, to the organizer. "As for the actual number of participants, it can only be decided after the selection committee meeting on July 27. The committee will consider athletes on merit, potential and appeal," he told Bernama here today. Based on the number of sports participated in the games to be held in Palembang and Jakarta from Nov 11-25, the OCM had estimated the Malaysian contingent to comprise of 650 athletes and officials. Kok Chi said a 650-member contingent was a reasonable figure since Indonesia would be offering 545 events in 44 sports, that include extreme and traditional sports. Malaysia however, would not compete in extreme and traditional sports like paragliding, fin swimming, traditional boat race, roller skates, bridge, vovinam, kempo and wrestling. The country's record participation in the SEA Games held outside the country was during the 2007 edition in Korat, Thailand with a 1,139-member contingent. The phased liberalisation will be based on its current and potential contribution to the Gross National Income (GNI). The liberalisation comes under the International Standards and Liberalisation Strategic Reform Initiatives (SRIs), which is among the six SRIs announced here today. Currently, the services sector contributed about 57 per cent to Malaysia's economy compared with between 70 per cent and 80 per cent for developed countries. The following are the recommendations for the three sectors to be implemented in phases: For Healthcare: *Remove restrictions to foreign equity participation in the setting up of specialised private hospitals with a minimum number of beds. *Relaxing entry restrictions for foreign specialists such as doctors and dentists. For Education: *Gradual relaxation of foreign equity restrictions in international schools while maintaning guidelines to ensure quality and standard of education institutions. *Extending teaching permits' validity up to five years. For Business Services (Professional Services) *Remove equity restrictions for accounting, legal and engineering services. *Relaxing entry conditions for foreign lawyers, engineers and architects to work in Malaysia. KL to 'gradually' lift curbs on foreign equity Posted: 04 Jul 2011 07:22 PM PDT Malaysia plans six reform initiatives to boost competitiveness and revamp its finances, the government said in a statement. The state will become more of a facilitator in business as opposed to being a significant investor, it said. Around RM13 billion will be targeted through cost-savings and revenue generation which will help the government repay debts and invest, said the statement. Malaysia plans to "gradually" remove restrictions on foreign equity and overseas professionals working in the Southeast Asian nation's services sector, the government said. Malaysia will ease foreign equity restrictions in international schools and extend teaching permits validity to up to five years. Malaysia will remove curbs to foreign participation in the establishment of specialist hospitals and ease entry restrictions for foreign specialists such as doctors and dentists. Malaysia said it identified 33 state-linked companies that may be divested through the government paring its stake, listing or outright sale. Govt earmarks 33 companies for divestment Posted: 04 Jul 2011 07:23 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The government has identified 33 companies as ready for divestment through a stake pare-down, listing or outright sale in a move to rationalise its portfolio of government-linked companies (GLCs. An action which involves the paring down of five companies, listing of seven companies and outright sale of 21 companies is under the Government's Role in Business, one of the six Strategic Reform Initiatives (SRIs) announced today. "Twenty-four companies are expected to be involved in the exercise during 2011-2012," said Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) in a statement today. It said the companies were at a different stage of preparation for divestment and announcements will be made over the course of the year by the respective organisations. Proceeds will be channeled to the Federal Government Divestment Account or a State Account for the purpose of serving the country's national deficit, investing in existing funds and the facilitation fund for businesses which the government can be involved in. Rajagobal after seeing his plans almost undone by poor defending in the Asian World Cup qualifying first round against Taiwan. In the first leg in Bukit Jalil, Helmi Remeli and Amirulhadi Zainal were both found wanting in the right-back position and second leg replacement Mahalli Jasuli did no better when his mistake led to Taiwan's second goal. Even experienced centre-back Aidil Zafuan Radzak admitted to playing below par while his partner Fadhli Shas gave away a penalty and was replaced in the 77th minute by Muslim Ahmad. Rajagobal said the errors allowed Taiwan, who won Sunday's second leg 3-2, to score four goals over the two legs, all of which could have been prevented. "As a coach, I don't take any defeat easily. But I have to remain calm because we achieved our aim of making it to the next round. "I'm not happy with how we played and we need to fix our mistakes and get our confidence back. That is the advice from Sabah head coach Justin Ganai for Kelantan who only need a draw in Likas tomorrow to become Super League champions for the first time. Justin, who took over from Gary Micheal in early May, said many teams have come to Sabah and returned home empty-handed. "We have beaten Perak, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Felda United FC, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang at home this season and we want to win our last league match too," said Justin. "We have qualified for the Malaysia Cup but with talks about having fewer teams in the Super League next year, we have no choice but to distance ourselves from the bottom four teams by collecting full points." Justin, however, admitted that it would not be easy to tame the determined league leaders even if playing at home. "It is too bad that defender Sumardi Hajalan was involved in a motorcycle crash last week as he is now out of the squad for at least two weeks," added Justin. "But the rest of our players are available for selection and they are in the mood to play spoilers." Meanwhile, Kelantan coach M.
