Football: Chelsea accept Malaysia's Benayoun apology Posted: 29 Jul 2011 10:43 PM PDT HONG KONG - Chelsea have accepted an apology from the Football Association of Malaysia over anti-Semitic abuse that targeted Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun during a pre-season match. The London club had lodged an official complaint after Benayoun was barracked during a game in Kuala Lumpur on July 21, the first leg of Chelsea's Asian tour. Chelsea initially played down the incident but went ahead with its complaint after reviewing the game. The club, which has since played games in Bangkok and Hong Kong without incident, said it is now happy to move on. "We appreciate the prompt attention the Malaysian FA has given our complaint," it said in a statement. "Chelsea Football Club is committed to eradicating all discriminatory behaviour from the game, and urges the MFA to take appropriate steps to stamp out this type of behaviour in future. "The club and Yossi accept the apology, and the matter is now closed." The Malaysian FA on Friday released a qualified apology to Chelsea and the player for conduct it said came from a small disruptive section of fans. "The FA of Malaysia would like to strongly register that we do not condone any form of racism in football," it said. "If such an incident did happen, we would like to apologise to the player concerned, and also to Chelsea FC." The midfielder was booed and jeered whenever he touched the ball in during the 1-0 win against a Malaysia XI in the capital. Benayoun was the first Israeli to play in Malaysia, which strongly supports the Palestinians and does not recognise Israel, maintaining no diplomatic ties with the country. Shahrizat sad ministry not able to help Ashraf Posted: 29 Jul 2011 10:38 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR -- Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said today that she was deeply saddened that her ministry was not able to provide counselling in time to Mohd Ashraf Abdul Aziz. Mohd Ashraf Abdul Aziz, 25, who wanted to change his name to Aleesha Farhana and gender after undergoing a sex change operation in Thailand in 2009, died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu at 5am today after having been admitted to the hospital''s intensive care unit on Thursday for heart problems and low blood pressure. Shahrizat said her ministry from early on had offered to provide counselling to Mohd Ashraf but now fate had intervened. "We were concerned about his wellbeing. My ministry is welfare oriented and we are non-judgemental. "We try to understand and counsel anyone who needs our help, especially people who feel desperate like in the case of Ashraf, but for him, it is too late now," she told Bernama when met on arrival at Putra World Trade Centre here where the Wanita Umno chief was due to chair a meeting of the Umno wing's executive committee. Shahrizat also extended her condolences to Mohd Ashraf's family and hoped they would remain strong in this difficult time. "If the family needs any help they can contact me or the nearest Welfare Department office," she said. Choppy trade ahead on KL bourse Posted: 29 Jul 2011 07:14 PM PDT Bursa Malaysia is likely to be choppy next week ahead of the August 2 deadline for US lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling, dealers said. With the US debt standoff continuing to dominate investor psychology, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was expected to test the crucial psychological level of 1,545 points. "The ability to rebound above the 1,545 points level over the next few days will definitely be positive suggesting the 1,560 level as the next target and the end of the debt saga," a dealer said. However, any breakdown below the 1,545 level would be the first warning sign that a major peak has been completed with more downside to come possibly towards the 1,530 level as the near-term target, an analyst said. Affin Investment Bank Head of Retail Research Dr Nazri Khan said some support for the KLCI was expected, partly due to positive regional spillover, with foreign investors returning to the country. He pointed out that latest trading statistics indicated that foreign equity trading in the local bourse had risen above 30 per cent for the first time after being depressed since 2009. Nazri said the government's decision to add more measures to combat inflation, such as a new price-control mechanism and a new National Key Result Area to deal with rising cost of living, will be supportive for the local benchmark. "We strongly believe domestic bank stocks would be able to weather the crisis given their limited exposure to US dollar denominated bonds and well capitalised position," Nazri told Bernama. He said investors should avoid highly geared companies that are dependent on foreign credit and pick cash rich companies which can seize mergers, acquisitions or privatisation opportunities in the event of a market downturn. For the week just ended, persistent selling pressure saw the FBM KLCI end 16.25 points lower at 1,548.81, from 1,565.06, previously. The Finance Index lost 183.52 points to 14,811.13, the Industrial Index fell 40.16 points to 2,827.74 but the Plantation Index rose 38.09 points to 7,736.2. The FBM Emas Index decreased 83.64 points to 10,682.79. Total weekly volume increased to 5.13 billion shares, worth RM8.07 billion, from 4.9 billion shares, valued at RM9.24 billion, last week. The Main Market turnover rose to 3.6 billion shares, worth RM7.84 billion, from 3.33 billion shares, valued at RM8.98 billion, previously. Volume on the ACE Market was higher at 999.5 million, valued at RM277.46 million, from 1.040 billion shares, worth RM166.03 million, registered last week. Weak growth, debt standoff hit US stocks Posted: 29 Jul 2011 04:23 PM PDT NEW YORK: US stocks sank on Friday, weighed down by an unexpectedly negative report on the country's economic growth and nervousness over the debt-ceiling battle in Washington. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 96.87 points (0.79 percent) to close at 12,143.24. It has now fallen for six consecutive trading days. The broader S&P 500 tumbled 8.39 points (0.65 percent) to 1,292.28, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed 9.87 points (0.36 percent) to close at 2,756.38. The Dow plunged more than 100 points in opening trade after the government reported that US gross domestic product grew just 1.3 percent in the second quarter, a much slower pace than economists had expected. Notably, the government also slashed its estimate for first-quarter GDP growth from 1.9 percent to just 0.4 percent. "The revision of Q1 was pretty stunning. Not a good overall number to finish the week on," said Marc Pado, chief US market strategist for Cantor Fitzgerald. Stock markets later made up some ground but remained depressed as investors worried about the looming threat of a default by the US government or a downgrade of the United States' top-notch credit rating. Only four days remain before a deadline set by the US Treasury for when it says it will stop being able to pay its bills unless Congress raises the government's $14.29 trillion borrowing limit. Congress has been unable to reach a compromise as deeply divided Democrats and Republicans have struggled to bridge their differences over taxes and government spending. In company news, shares of Yahoo! fell 3.0 percent after the Internet services firm announced that it had settled a dispute with its Chinese partners over payment-processing unit Alipay. Yahoo! claimed victory in the agreement, but some analysts compared the resolution of the dispute to a forced sale. Shares of Chevron, the number-two US oil company, dropped 1.0 percent even though it reported that its second-quarter profits had surged 43 percent to $7.73 billion. Bond prices rallied. ART GANG Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:55 AM PDT 2011/07/28 By Jassmine Shadiqe A group of artists showed their skills and exhibited their works at a two-day art carnival in Pulai Utama recently IN just a matter of three years, a school art club set up to promote creativity and lateral thinking has become a social network whose members include prominent Johor artist Abdul Majid Yahya. Artgeng was established in 2007 in SK Taman Universiti in Johor Baru by art teacher Norazlan Ahmad to instil discipline into his students through art. Norazlan learnt that when his students concentrated on art and channeled their energy into it, they started being more responsible and were found to be more disciplined. Over time, however, after Norazlan created the Artgeng page on the social-networking site Facebook, a large number of artists became members and started sharing their works and experiences on the wall, bringing the community closer as a unit. Abdul Majid, renowned for his wood sculptures, and Norazlan met after chatting online for several months and embarked in a collaboration. The duo planned numerous art-related events that drew participation from members nationwide, while also ensuring the involvement of students. The latest event was an art exhibition and demonstration carnival that was held at the U Mall Shopping Complex in Pulai Utama in Johor Baru recently. Art group Persatuan Seni Lukis dan Reka Cipta Johor, also known as SERUPA, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Centre for the Study of Built Environment in the Malay World were the co-organisers. The two-day event, which was officiated by Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Aziz Sapian, was a visual art carnival aimed at sharing knowledge, tips, interest and also to watch established local and international artistes at work. An exhibition displaying the works of artists from Johor and other states in the country as well as those from Indonesia. Among artists who participated were Pahang artist Munif Mohammad Nor who gave a demonstration on "live" portraits while Hasren Ismail, who is popularly known as Uneh, gave a workshop on colour-pencil drawings. Uneh is known for his pencil colour series called "Flowers for Humanity". Visitors were also given a demonstration on batik-painting and making, techniques on caricature drawing as well as oil and watercolour paintings. Students from 24 primary schools in the Skudai Zone also took part in an art competition where they learnt about the technical aspects of designing and also how to express social messages like "Do Not Litter" through art. Abdul Majid said artists from numerous associations were invited to the carnival to share their skills and expertise for the benefit of students. Norazlan said the students were also given a booth, where their art works were displayed and sold. Fai Zakaria, an interior designer cum artist who uses acrylic, oil paint and art line in her works, displayed her Heart for Art collections, where a percentage of the sale went to charity organisations like the National Cancer Council Malaysia. Batik demonstrations were done by Suhaila Basar, Ashok Kumar showcased his acrylic paintings while, Norazlan demonstrated his relief painting and Abdul Majid his wooden sculptures. SERUPA chairman Sanip Lasman, a former secretary of the Johor Heritage Foundation, also conducted a workshop called "Art in Action". Australia to probe asylum seeker suicides Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:10 PM PDT SYDNEY: Australia said Friday it would probe the high number of suicides and self-harm incidents among asylum seekers in immigration detention centres, including at the strife-hit Christmas Island site. The country's chief Ombudsman Allan Asher said he was alarmed about the impact of long-term detention on mental health after more than 1,100 cases of threatened or actual self-harm were reported in the first half of the year. "I was myself on Christmas Island at the end of June and there were 30 incidents in that week, and then across Australia in the first week of July, 50 incidents," Asher told ABC television late Thursday. "We think there is something seriously wrong that needs to be looked at." Australia has a policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers arriving by boat, but has softened its stance in recent years to allow more women and children into the community as their refugee claims are assessed. The move has left centres, including the remote Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island, with a large population of males now separated from their families, said Louise Newman, chair of the Detention Health Advisory Group. Newman said there have been five suicides in detention since September 2010, adding that almost every night one young man somewhere in the system attempts to hang himself. "We all know that things are probably much worse in there then they have been for some time," Newman told AFP. "We've seen virtually every night at the moment somewhere in the system is a near-miss suicide. "We've had outbreaks of group self-harming behaviour, people joining together to harm themselves." According to data obtained by the ABC, the situation has become so serious at Christmas Island that staff have been told to carry knives at all times so they can cut down detainees who have tried to hang themselves. Inmates are also denied their own razors, the state broadcaster reported, saying that men who need to shave have to request a razor and then hand it back once they have finished. The investigation into suicide and self-harm will look at the extent of the problem, gather demographic data about those involved as well as the length of time they spent in detention, and the potential roots of the behaviour. The inquiry will also examine whether attempted or successful suicides and incidents of self-harm could trigger other incidents among inmates. Newman said self-harming behaviour could be "very contagious". 16 workers die, 10 missing in Ukraine mine blast Posted: 28 Jul 2011 11:07 PM PDT KIEV: Sixteen miners died and another 10 were missing after a nighttime explosion in a coal mine in the Lugansk region in eastern Ukraine, the emergencies ministry said on Friday. As a result of the early Friday accident, two more workers received burn injuries and were hospitalised, the ministry said in a statement. "The fate of 10 miners remains unknown," said the Kiev-based emergencies ministry, adding that a total of 28 people worked at the mine when the explosion occurred at 1:57 am local time Friday. A spokesman for the emergencies ministry's local branch in Luganks, speaking to AFP, cofirmed the number of dead. He said however that three miners were hospitalised, while nine remained trapped in the coal mine. He could not say whether they were dead or alive. Ukraine's energy minister Yury Boiko went to the scene of the accident at the Sukhodolskaya-Vostochnaya Coal Mine, part of the Krasnodonugol mining company, to personally take charge of the rescue operation. Officials did not provide details on the cause of the blast. Most of the country's mine disasters have been caused by build-ups of methane gas. Deadly accidents are frequent in the Ukrainian mines, most of which are located in the country's industrial eastern region. Najib likened unity among the people to that of a football team that had players in various positions on the field. Najib later announced RM1.1 million in financial assistance from the Federal Government to seven Chinese schools and an association of former Chinese school students. Earlier, Najib visited Al-Rahmah mosque in Taman Wira, Mergong, where he was briefed on the extension work for the mosque by senior principal assistant director in the Implementation Coordination Unit in the Prime Minister's Department, Ab Ghapar Daud. Construction of a new wing for the 20-year-old mosque, costing RM1.12 million, is funded by the Federal Government and would begin next month. Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures. The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership. A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself. I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ". Frankly how many can do that ? This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example. Traits of great leader who make small people feel great. Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders. It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count. We should not trumpet about it. High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah. Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation. Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible. The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number. In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ? Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind. My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise. And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful. The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered. First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?. Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ? The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members. However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants. Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency,the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident. Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different. As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say,with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters. From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? In reaction, the Wall Street's equity indices ended between flat and minus 0.5 per cent last night, it said in a research note. Losers outpaced gainers 165 to 99 while 151 other counters were unchanged. A total of 1.01 million shares worth RM53.84 million were traded. The Finance Index fell 11.05 points to 14,660.94, the Plantation Index declined 1.21 points to 7,750.58 and the Industrial Index slid 5.5 points to 2,639.82. The FBM Emas Index lost 8.3 points to 10,600.17, the FBM Mid 70 Index dropped 13.21 points to 11,806.85 and the FBM Ace Index decreased 1.83 points to 4,055.88. Among active stocks, Dutaland-Wa rose 1.5 sen to 18 sen, Dutaland added two sen to 63.5 sen and Olympia-Wa fell half-a-sen to 13.5 sen. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 62.44 points (0.51 per cent) to close at 12,240.11. It has now fallen for five straight trading days amid jitters over the debt-ceiling deadlock. The broader SandP 500 fell 4.22 points (0.32 per cent) to 1,300.67, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite eked out a slight gain, rising 1.46 points (0.05 per cent) to 2,766.25. The US Treasury says that if the government's US$14.29 trillion debt ceiling is not raised by Tuesday, it could be forced to default on its debts, an outcome seen as all-but-certain to have ruinous effects on financial markets. But the standoff showed no signs of ending on Thursday as the Republican-led House of Representatives planned to vote on a debt-reduction plan which the Democrat-led Senate was almost certain to reject. "The market needs and wants to see more concrete evidence of a deal getting done," said Scott Marcouiller, chief market technical strategist for Wells Fargo Advisors. In a sign of Wall Street's alarm, the heads of more than a dozen US banks and major financial firms - including Citigroup, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs - wrote a joint letter to President Barack Obama and Congress appealing for a swift resolution. Stocks rallied early in the day after a surprisingly positive report on the US job market, but then fell back. The US Labour Department said new claims for unemployment benefits fell to 398,000 last week, their lowest level in nearly four months and the first time they had fallen below 400,000 since early April. Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil pulled down the Dow's average of 30 blue-chip stocks as it sank 2.2 per cent on a disappointing earnings report. The energy firm said that its second-quarter profits surged 41 per cent from last year to US$10.7 billion thanks to rising oil prices, but the results fell short of analysts' forecasts. Goodyear plunged 7.2 per cent after it reported record quarterly revenue of US$5.6 billion but also warned that growing inflation in emerging markets and high materials costs would cut into future earnings.
