By Syed Abdullah Syed Mohamed

Several local writers were honoured at the Darul Takzim Eighth Literary Award recently

IT was was an evening of splendour at the Persada Johor International convention centre, Johor Baru.

Senior government officers, art enthusiasts, teachers and students thronged the Tanjung Puteri hall to witness the presentation of the Darul Takzim Eighth Literary Awards ceremony.

Administered by the Johor Heritage Foundation (Yayasan Warisan Johor or YWJ), with the co-operation of Gapena (National Writers Association), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) southern branch, Johor Writers' Association) and YWJ Citra Holdings Sdn Bhd, the aim of the award is to acknowledge the contribution of the state's writers.

Their works comprise novels, short stories, poems, essays, articles and dramas.

Recipients of the award were successful writers who received prizes ranging from RM500 to RM7,000.

Guest-of-honour at the biennial event -- first launched in 1996 -- was Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman. On hand to welcome Ghani were state Rural Development and Territory, Arts, Culture and Heritage chairman Asiah Md Ariff, senior exco member Datuk Ahmad Zahari Jamil, state secretary Obet Tawil, YWJ director Muhamad Fuad Radzuan and other dignitaries.

The audience was entertained with poetry, music and dance.

Two new books produced by the YWJ's Literary division, Seorang Pemikir (A Thinker) and Mohd Said Sulaiman, Cendekiawan Terbilang Johor (Mohd Said Sulaiman, Johor's distinctive intellectual) were also unveiled at the event.

YWJ's Literary and Historical division head Dzul Karnain Asmawi said the awards are handed out to participants whose works (in the Malay language) were published in the mass media in 2009 and last year.

"The awards are given to talented writers born in Johor and those who are not born in in the state but have resided in Johor for at least five years," he said.

Dzul Karnain said a team of seven panelists comprising senior lecturers from the country's leading universities, senior officers of DBP, Gapena and Pena (National Writers Association) were assigned to evaluate the writers' works.

The panelists include the prominent literary figure Associate Professor Dr Lim Swee Tin.

This year's recipient for the "Hadiah Karyawan Sastera Johor" -- the most prestigious award of the event -- was Dr Amida @Hamidah Abdul Hamid, a retired academician from University Malaya.

Anida, 68, whose uses the pseudonym Anis, has produced a long list of novels.

She received RM7,000.

Khairul Hafiz Abd Rahman, 39, received the Hadiah Cipta Karyawan Muda award which carried a prize of RM3,000.

Kairul Hafiz, whose pen name is Serunai Faqir, is the owner of Astaka Villa Aksara, a media company. He said he started writing in primary school.

"I just love writing. It gives me great satisfaction," said Khairul, who is a much sought-after speaker at workshops on novels and short-story writing.

Winner of the children's novel category was Muhammad Hilal Asraf Abdul Razak, 21. His story was story entitled Remaja Mulia (Honourable Youth).

Hilal received RM2,000. He is now in Jordan pursuing a degree course in Islamic law. Hilal's prize was received on his behalf by his father Abdul Razak Kaprawi.

"My son has written 13 books," said Abdul Razak, a lecturer at the Temenggong Ibrahim Teachers Institute, Johor Baru.

In her welcome speech, Asiah hoped that more literary enthusiasts, especially students and trainee teachers, would continue the work of their predecessors.

She advised youngsters not to get too caught up in cyberspace but to develop their own creative-thinking skills.

Ghani lauded the management of YWJ for organising the event. He congratulated award recipients and gave the assurance that the state government would assist in promoting the literary works of local writers.

The day I beat the odds to win post

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 08:06 AM PDT

2011/08/09
by Mohd Ghauth Mohd Yusoff

MY interest in political activism was sparked during my secondary schooling years in Sekolah Aminudin Baki in Kuala Lumpur in 1967.

I was enrolled as a Form Three Science student. Since my family resided in Johor Baru, I spent my free time participating in school activities and programmes including sports.

I was appointed secretary -- a post that many of my peers disliked -- of several clubs and associations

After three years, I returned to Johor Baru.

Armed with a well-earned SPM certificate, I secured a clerical post at the state treasury department in 1973.

After a couple of years, I was transferred to the office of the Menteri Besar.

My tenure at the distinguished department was exhilarating. In 18 years, I served under three chiefs of state -- the late Tan Sri Othman Mohd Saat and Datuk Ajib Ahmad and of course, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin, the present Deputy Prime Minister.

Under Othman and then Ajib, I administered the Umno Youth brass band, the former's baby.

The only one of its kind in the country, the band consisted of 50 youth members and conductor the late Atan Ahmad.

The band was invited to perform at state government functions, wedding receptions at homes of senior government officers and tea parties and dinner at Saujana, the Menteri Besar's official residence.

Simultaneously, I became a member of the Yahya Awal Umno branch under the Pulai division.

In 1985, following a re-delineation exercise, the Yahya Awal locality was placed under the jurisdiction of the Johor Baru parliamentary constituency.

Thus the Yahya Umno branch went under the JB Umno division, which is headed by Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad to this day.

In 1987, Mohd Khaled Nordin, (the current Higher Education Minister and Pasir Gudang MP with the title Datuk Seri), then Shahrir's political secretary, beat incumbent Zais Akilwon to win the JB youth division chief post.

I was appointed division secretary by Khaled. However, our activities and programmes were short-lived following court order on the validity of he party.

When the party recuperated the following year, I was appointed pro-tem leader of the JB youth division.

Shahrir, Khaled and some disgruntled members only rejoined after much persuasion from high-ranking party leaders through a special resolution.

In 1989, Khaled, with many youth supporters rallying behind him, affirmed nomination to challenge me for the youth division leader post.

The odds were indeed in Khaled's favour. His credentials as a lawyer and former political secretary and his superior position in the youth hierarchy were sufficient to discourage me.

I had a strategy for the two-week campaign, however, and during my term as pro-tem leader, my relationship with the branch leader was cordial and positive.

Inside Diamond Jubilee Hall, the election venue, the air was fraught with tension and suspense.

It was also packed with party representatives, observers and members of other divisions.

Astonishingly, I won to retain the post by a margin of only five votes, to the shouts, applause and congratulatory messages from my supporters.

However, my employment in government service prevented me from seizing the opportunities to move up in the political arena.

In the 1990 general elections, the party machinery selected Khaled as the candidate for the Johor Baru parliamentary constituency. As youth leader, I campaigned tooth and nail to ensure a victory for Khaled.

We remain close to this day although he is now a full minister.

In 1993, after completing my term as youth chief, I gradually distanced myself from active politics to concentrate on my family.

Upon retirement from government service late last year, I joined Warisan, a non-governmental organisation, as secretary.

Anwar can be present during interviews: Court

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:03 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here allowed the presence of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the interview of 15 witnesses, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Justice Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah ruled that the accused had the right
to be there after meeting Anwar's counsels and deputy public prosecutors headed
by Mohd Hanafiah Zakaria in his chambers today.

Both the prosecution and defence sought the directive of the trial judge today when two of the witnesses, former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa
Hassan and ex-Melaka police chief Datuk Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof, protested

yesterday against Anwar's presence during the interview.

Lawyer Karpal Singh told reporters with the court's directive, all the witnesses had to come to court as required by the defence.

"Anwar will be there and he has the right to be there and the investigation
officer (IO) of this case will facilitate us to conduct the interviews with 10
of them already here today," said Karpal.

Asked whether there was any indication from the prosecution when Najib and

Rosmah would be interviewed, Karpal said so far there was none but added it had
to be before Anwar took his stand next Monday (Aug 15).

On Monday, Mohamad Zabidin granted Anwar's two applications to interview 15
witnesses including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, his wife Datin
Sri Rosmah Mansor, Musa, Rodwan and 11 others.

The judge then set Aug 15 to 26 for the defence case.

At the close of its case, the prosecution offered 71 witnesses, including
Najib and Rosmah. The defence chose to interview only 25, and so far, only five
had been interviewed.

They are ex-sprint queen Datuk Mumtaz Jaafar, Dr Mohd Osman Abd Hamid,
formerly of Pusrawi, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's youngest sister, Saidaiti
Azlan, a Kuala Lumpur Hospital doctor known only as Dr Daniel, and Khairil Anaz
Yusof, a special assistant to Najib when he was deputy prime minister.

On May 16, Justice Mohamad Zabidin ordered Anwar to enter his defence after
ruling that the latter's former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the complainant
in the case, was a truthful and credible witness.

Anwar, 64, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court on Aug 7, 2008, to
committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature at Kondominium Desa
Damansara in Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, the same
year. -- BERNAMA

Government should boost New Media presence

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:26 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must boost its presence on the internet by mastering the new media such as 'Face book' and 'Twitter' which are highly popular, especially among the young.

Institut of Mind Development (INMIND) chief executive Norizan Sharif said
the conventional way of tackling issues using the mainstream media was
ineffective.

"The government must respond to the new media, otherwise the people treat
its allegations as true.

"Currently, we don't see the government responding in Facebook, we also
don't see any (government) initiative in answering in blogs and Twitter. We can

see many opposition Members of Parliament in Twitter, but on the government
side, the number is dismal," he told Bernama.

Norizan was commenting on a statement by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein yesterday who said the opposition used the new media to instigate the people to take part in illegal activities for political gain although the news they highlighted were untrue.

Hishammuddin said the government found it difficult to explain the situation

on the illegal gathering on July 9 despite the various existing media channels
being used, following the widespread use of the new media by the opposition.

Norizan, who also wrote in the blog http://www.nobisha.com said the absence
of government engagement in the new media handicapped it so much so that it
encountered difficulties in answering issues relating to the illegal
gathering.

He also suggested that the government activate efforts to download every
announcement or good news to YouTube because studies found that the young spent
part of their time surfing the internet.

Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan's History, Politics and Strategy Study
Centre senior lecturer Abd Ghapa Harun said the mainstream media must also
dispel the fallacy that they still monopolised news distribution.

"It is important that the government is transparent when issuing related
information when facing an issue because this will build confidence in the media
being used by the government.

Abd Ghapa also said that emphasising a high level of integrity among the
mainstream media by the government, would in itself weaken the public trust in
the alternative media.

He said the integrity of a large portion of the content of the alternative
media was questionable compared to that of the mainstream media. -- BERNAMA

BUILDING CAREERS

Juita's programmes have successfully helped single mothers acquire marketable skills

WHAT happens to a woman and her family when she is widowed, divorced or abandoned by her husband?

If he was the sole breadwinner, they would be left bereft, helpless and sometimes, even homeless.

The woman is left with the responsibility of bringing up her family alone.

To help single mothers acquire marketable skills, Juita or Badan Amal dan Kebajikan Isteri Wakil-Wakil Rakyat Johor, together with Yayasan Pembangunan Keluarga Darul Ta'zim (YPKDT) implemented an income-generating skills programme for single mothers in 2003.

The programme was the 12th in the Juita-ku Sayang series of community projects.

Single mothers were able to acquire entrepreneurial skills from courses for foot reflexology and spa management, cooking, pastry-making, food and beverage packaging, tailoring, hairdressing, handicrafts, child-minding, nursery care and gardening to start a business.

Juita is led by its president Prof Datin Paduka Dr Jamilah Ariffin, who is the wife of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Since 1995, Juita has implemented 13 welfare programmes in its Juita-ku Sayang series following its smart-partnerships concept.

The programmes were conducted in cooperation with state departments, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.

On June 25, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Juita, YPKDT and the Johor Corporation (JCorp) to establish a Reflexology Kiosk at A-Mart in Kempas. It would be managed by Damansara Assets Sdn Bhd.

In a simple ceremony on July 30, this kiosk was officially opened by Jamilah.

The event was witnessed by representatives from JCorp's women's club, known as Mutiara Johor Corporation; Johor Land Bhd, Damansara Assets, YPKDT and Johor Soka Gakkai Association.

The kiosk will be operated by five single mothers who are among 46 participants who had honed their skills with scientific knowledge at a holistic therapy certificate course with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2008.

These therapists also took up a pre- and post-natal therapy course under YPKDT.

Jamilah hoped the kiosk will be the first of many such kiosks to be set up in shopping malls, hypermarkets and airports.

She said with more kiosks at strategic locations, there would be more opportunities for single mothers to earn higher incomes for their families.

Fourteen women who had completed their training received automated equipment to help them start their businesses. Among the items were a sewing machine, cake-mixer, clothes dryer, waffle-making machine and freezer.

Ratna Haryati Ramlan started a plant nursery in her own garden with a capital of RM1,500 from YPKDT after she completed her gardening course.

She said during the eight years it took to develop her business, she first set up a stall at the Saturday morning Pasar Tani in Larkin before expanding to Bandar Baru Uda.

In recognition of her entrepreneurial skills and business success, she was awarded RM3,000 to develop her business further.

During the ceremony, Jamilah presented 100 low-income single mothers with gift packs sponsored by JCorp.

The gift packs, valued at more than RM300 each, contained pieces of fabric, toiletries from Juita, and 5kg bags of rice from YPKDT, and RM50 for each recipient from Soka Gakkai.

The children of single mothers were also treated to Kentucky Fried Chicken meal boxes.

Since May 2003, YPKDT, in partnership with Juita, has trained more than 2,000 participants in their courses.

Hari Raya food supply sufficient: Noh

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 11:31 PM PDT

KOTA BARU: The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has assured that there will be sufficient food supply for Aidilfitri as it has taken early steps to avoid shortages.

Its minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar said the ministry had made planning one month before Ramadan, including giving additional import permits to traders who wished to import meat, fish and chicken.

"Besides ensuring sufficient chicken supply, the breeders have agreed to the chicken farm price of RM5.20 per kilogramme," he said after handing over monetary aid to farmers in the Kemubu Agriculture Development Authority (Kada) area who were flood victims, here, today.

"There's a bit of problem with beef supply, and we hope supplies from Sudan and other countries will come in soon, but this depends on measures taken by the companies to expedite imports."

However, he said, companies that wished to import meat and chicken must obtain supplies from abattoirs approved by the ministry, as well as halal certification from the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

On another development, Noh said Fama had added 58 more pasar tani (farmers' markets) throughout the country, bringing the total number to 400, aimed at stabilising food prices and ensuring adequate supplies, especially of vegetables.

He has also asked Fama to sell daily necessities at lower prices to consumers.

Asian stocks slump further on economic fears

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 11:15 PM PDT

HONG KONG: Asian stock markets tumbled today, deepening sharp losses over the previous two sessions brought on by the historic US credit downgrade and the debt crisis in Europe.

As gold soared to record levels and crude prices fell, Asian stocks plunged despite G7 and G20 pledges to bolster the global economy and European Central Bank action on eurozone debt.

Tokyo fell 3.34 percent in the afternoon, Hong Kong lost 6.01 percent by the break, Sydney shed two percent and Seoul was 7.50 percent down while Taipei was one percent down. Shanghai fell 1.10 percent.

"It's a horrible place to be, dark days are upon us," said IG Markets institutional dealer Chris Weston from Melbourne. "How much further to fall is the question people are asking.

"People are trading on emotions at the moment rather than looking at the rational situation. There's widespread panic."

However, losses were not as steep as earlier in the day amid hopes that the panic-selling was easing.

Fear continued to dominate after the unprecedented downgrade of the United States by Standard & Poor's on Friday and a warning from the head of the European Commission Thursday that the debt crisis in the eurozone had likely spilt over into other economies.

With the US Federal Reserve board meeting later Tuesday, analysts hope any fresh policy decision will stem the global turmoil, which saw markets plummet around the world on Friday and Monday.

"S&P's downgrade of the US credit rating is yet another demand from Wall Street for QE3 (quantitative easing), which their own private bank, the Federal Reserve, will no doubt deliver shortly," said a fund manager at Grand Private Equities Wesley Legrand.

Shanghai shaved its morning losses after China announced inflation had hit 6.5 percent in July, a more than three-year high, amid hopes that the price rises had levelled out and the government would ease up on its rate hikes.

Asian stocks had been expected to open lower after Wall Street suffered its steepest one-day drop since late 2008 on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 5.55 percent, while the broader S&P 500 fell 6.7 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dived 6.9 percent.

Those losses were accompanied by a similar sell-off elsewhere, with Frankfurt down more than 5.0 percent, Paris down 4.7 percent and London diving nearly 3.4 percent.

There were also big losses in Latin America, with Sao Paolo down eight percent and Buenos Aires sinking more than 10 percent.

Gold, viewed as a safe haven in financial turmoil, hit a record high $1,754.24 an ounce in Hong Kong morning trade.

The euro bought $1.4191 in early Asian trade on Tuesday, almost flat from $1.4179 in New York late Monday, while it eased to 109.74 yen from 110.27.
The dollar stayed weak against the Japanese currency, trading at 77.31 yen against 77.68 yen in New York.

The debt fears also weighed on the Australian dollar, which fell below parity with the greenback for the first time since the Japanese earthquake in March.

In afternoon trade the "Aussie" was at 99.42 US cents, down from 103.55 cents on Monday.

Oil markets saw heavy selling. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in September shed $3.53, or 4.34 percent, to $77.78 per barrel, its lowest since September 30, 2010.

WTI prices had plunged $5.60, or 6.89 percent, to a low of $75.71 in intra-day trade before clawing back some ground.

Brent North Sea crude for September delivery slipped $2.60, or 3.01 percent, to $101.04. It had earlier fallen below $100 for the first time since February 8.

On other share markets, Wellington shed 3.87 percent, Manila lost four percent and Mumbai fell 2.34 percent in morning trade. - AFP

Malaysians not involved in London riot: Anifah

Malaysians not involved in London riot: Anifah

KOTA KINABALU: No Malaysian citizens were involved in the London riot that erupted over the weekend, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

In fact, no Malaysians were in the vicinity, he said.

"I received a report from our High Commissioner there, Datuk Zakaria Sulong, that our citizens, especially students, were on holiday.

"Most have returned home (to Malaysia), but we have advised Malaysians in areas nearby not to go to that specific area," he told reporters after his minstry's breaking-of-fast function, here, last night.

A smashing and looting rampage broke out on Saturday at Tottenham in North London after a peaceful demonstration over the death of its local 29-year-old Mark Duggan, a black man, who was shot by police two days earlier.

However, Anifah said, it was still safe to travel to Britain, but he advised Malaysians to stay away from Tottenham, an area with high unemployment rate and racial issues, for the time being.

Meanwhile, Malaysia will be working out an effective solution with members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on how to help Somalia deal with its hunger crisis.

Anifah said the government would also be playing its own part to help the current emergency situation in the civil war-stricken African country.

"Usually, Malaysia will send necessities like food, medicine, clothing and cash. But we also need to consider the logistics of dispatching aid as Somalia is very far away," he said.-- BERNAMA

Half-month bonus

Early Raya gift of minimum RM500 for civil servants

PUTRAJAYA: All 1.27million civil servants in the country will be getting an early Hari Raya gift as the government will be making a half-month bonus payout soon.

The bonus, with a minimum payment of RM500, will be paid out in the middle of this month.

The 590,000 pensioners in the country will also not be left out as they will be getting a RM500 special payment at the same time before Hari Raya which is expected to fall on Aug 30.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the payouts were in appreciation of their contributions and dedication in successfully carrying out the country's development plans.

"The government hopes this bonus and special payment will help lighten the burden of civil servants and pensioners as well as help them make preparations for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.

"This shows that the government is always concerned about the welfare of civil servants and pensioners.

"This bonus payout is a mark of the government's appreciation of all civil servants,"Najib, who is also finance minister, said.

In a statement issued yesterday, Najib also said the payouts would cost the government RM2 billion. The news came as a pleasant surprise for General Operations Forces chief security supervisor Chief Inspector Che Samsudin Che Yusoff.

Hearing it first from the media, he said he did not see it coming at all.

"This will not only lighten the burden of my Hari Raya expenditure but will certainly make the celebration more meaningful for my whole family." For Noorafida Pardi, 40, an auxiliary policewoman attached to Seri Perdana, the bonus would go a long way as it meant she could buy extra revision books for her son who was sitting the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia this year.

The single mother, whose salary was about RM1,300 per month, said with the gift she could also make Hari Raya special for her mother, who is also a single mother.

Malaysian Pensioners Association president Datuk Raja Wan Mahmood Pawanteh, when contacted, expressed appreciation to the government for considering the welfare of pensioner s.

This is the third consecutive year civil servants and pensioners are getting the bonus — after the payment in August last year and the 2009 payout made just before Hari Raya.

The last time the government issued a one-month salary or a minimum of RM1,000 bonus to public servants was in 2008 when the payout was staggered in September and December.

Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services president Datuk Omar Osman said Cuepacs was thankful that the government had made such a huge allocation to pay bonuses to civil servants.

It hoped the government would consider another round of bonus payout after the Budget presentation in October.

Omar said this would especially help the rank-and-file in the service, especially those with many school-going children.
