I can take on Aziz anytime: Dr Zul

GUA MUSANG: Pas' candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed remained a good sport over jokes that his stocky frame might tire him fast during the campaign trail.

He said he was used to work long hours when he was a doctor at government hospitals in the past.

"There were times when I had to work over 36 hours on a stretch, then. I think I can keep up with the hectic campaign schedule now," he said.

Dr Zulkefli, 44, will be up against Barisan Nasional's Abdul Aziz Yusoff, 49, in the Galas by-election on Nov 4.

Some segments of political watchers have been heard making comparisons between the two candidates of their physiques.

Such light banter follows an absence of substantive issues to debate since campaigning started on Nov 26.

Dr Zulkefli said he was feeling alright even when there were many places to visit over the past three days.

To keep fit, he said he took a lot of water and sufficient rest.

When a reporter asked about his weight, Dr Zulkefli said: "I do not know. Let us keep it as a secret."

In jest, he said he could take on Aziz in a running or tug-of-war competition.

Sabah Umno reaching the 500,000 mark

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:17 PM PDT

Once upon a time, a real history took place and handed down the real lessons out of the events concluded that a small number can defeat a huge number of opponents by the will of Allah taala. Therefore, in the modern institutions and struggle like political institutions, this lessons of history is still relevant and worthy to ponder. In fact, there are many facts to ponder on why the listed numbers of political members do not reflex the true pictures.
The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman's recent annoucement of Sabah UMNO success in the recruitment of membership drive does not mean much to me as it seems to suggest it is the result of his leadership.

A leader should be humble and not self glorifying. One's work should be judged by the people and not himself.

I still remember our DPM, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remark in the opening of the PBS congress in Kota Kinabalu recently where he said "he has done little in the success of the Batu Sapi by election ".

Frankly how many can do that ?

This is the model of leader we must emulate - humble, unassuming and lead by example.

Traits of great leader who make small people feel great.

Afterall, recruitment of new members in any party is the duty and obligation of its leaders.

It is not a competition as it is the quality and not quantity of the effort that count.

We should not trumpet about it.

High membership in any political party does not guarantee success if the party and its leaders do not command the support from its ranks and files as well as leaders from other coalition parties, particularly in the state of Sabah.

Having such a mentality would breed complacency and place the party concerned and BN in a perilous situation.

Sabah UMNO chief, Datuk Musa Aman's annoucement that their membership drive to date has reached 456,000 membership level, the highest among all other states is indeed quite credible.

The first thing that comes to thought is 456,000 is 456,000 until the half million mark is reached which is another 44,000 more to go and this is not a small number.

In the annoucement, last year alone, they only managed to recruit 40,000 new members and has no mention of what this year's result is ?

Has the effort reached been saturated is another question that surfaces in my mind.

My concern however is in any numerical assessment, we must give the picture in its correct perspective and not try to over dramatise or sensationalise it to justify certain motives, personal or otherwise.

And when figures concerning and affecting the outcome of an election, the state and the image of UMNO and Barisan Nasional, we have to be careful and truthful.

The annoucement also gives rise to many questions to be answered.

First, how many of these registered members will actually and eventually vote and vote for BN comes election time?.

Is the annoucement trying to suggest we are growing stronger, there is nothing to worry and we can repeat the big win in the state achieved in the last election ?

The Batu Sapi by election is no doubt the combined efforts in greater and lesser extend of all state BN coalition members.

However, with the bad blood that existed all along with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Musa Aman and PBS president, Datuk Pairin, with SAPP president, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, the duel was in actual fact a life and dead battle among the subject combatants.

Aided by a predominantly bumi constituency, the vast resources from BN and the ever tireless presence of our DPM, the vast win at Batu Sapi could be an isolated incident.

Removing these factors, or in a diluted extent, the result could be different.

As a rough estimate, Sabah with a population of 2.5 million and say, with a 60% eligible voters, it will work out to have about 1.5 million potential voters.

From the above, the present UMNO membership only represents to about 30% of the total possible voters. Will that be adequate to determine another landslide victory in the coming election ? given the fact there 60 constituencies in the state ? Many in the last encounter encountered sort of narrow escape ? The growing number of unresolved problems faced by the people todate? The discontents of the present leadership among the files and ranks ? How much support the present state leadership since last reappointed, still enjoy is therefore any one's guess.

To me the annoucement seems to be made in conjunction with the coming BN convention in Kuala Lumpur in an effort to influence its outcomes

Chong Wei, Lin Dan on collision course

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:32 AM PDT

WEDNESDAY'S sunny weather was replaced by a steady drizzle and a drastic drop in temperature yesterday but Lee Chong Wei and nemesis Lin Dan remained hot and vibrant as they stormed into the World Championships quarter-finals at London's Wembley Arena.

Both faced South Korean opposition -- Chong Wei up against Park Sung Hwan while three-time world champion Lin Dan played Lee Hyun Il -- but the results were predictable.

Top seed Chong Wei beat Sung Hwan 21-10, 21-5 in 29 minutes while Lin Dan took a little longer to send Hyun Il packing 21-16, 21-13, both advancing to the stage in which they were sensationally knocked out in the Paris edition last year.

It was, for Chong Wei, his best performance in three matches.

"I played really well today (yesterday) and I am pleased I didn't allow Sung Hwan to take a grip on the match even once.

"I wanted to be in control from the start and I managed to do that. I employed a slightly more aggressive approach and that made it difficult for Sung Hwan," said the World No 1.

The match had been approached with caution as Sung Hwan had beaten Lin Dan in last year's World Championships.

The shuttles, described as slow, were another reason for the caution as Sung Hwan is a stroke player and Chong Wei didn't want to get dragged into a battle of rallies.

"Sung Hwan can be a difficult opponent and it is always best to prevent him from playing his game. My aggression took him by surprise and he couldn't recover. I could sense that he was losing confidence as the match progressed."

While that might have been the case with the Korean, it certainly wasn't with Chong Wei as he oozed confidence.

"I have to agree that this is perhaps the best I have prepared for the World Championships. It is my sixth World Championships and another reason why I feel good is because I feel this is my best chance to win the title."

Coach Tey Seu Bock said Chong Wei's mobility and game indicated he was approaching peak form.

"This was his best match so far and when he is in this mood, he can be a very difficult opponent. He was confident on court, despite Sung Hwan being a potentially difficult opponent and this was good to see," said Seu Bock.

With Lin Dan being reclusive, attention has been on Chong Wei but Seu Bock cautioned against underestimating the Olympic champion.

"Lin Dan may not look like he is at his best but that will change if he were to face Chong Wei. He always produces something extra against Chong Wei and discounting him can prove very costly."

Lin Dan, who took 37 minutes to beat Hyun Il, described the tie as a "boring affair".

"Hyun Il didn't seem to be in good condition and that made it easy for me. I wasn't really tested but it was still a good workout and I am looking forward to the quarter-finals," said Lin Dan, speaking to China media.

Up next for him in the quarter-finals is either compatriot Du Pengyu or Japan's Sho Sasaki while Chong Wei will play the winner of the tie between giant-killers Kevin Cordon of Guatemala or Pablo Aiban of Spain. Both third round matches were being played late yesterday.

Captain Obvious to face stiff test in Kranji

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:15 AM PDT

ANOTHER highly rated Malaysian galloper is set to tackle Singapore racing on Sunday.

After the success of Speed Baby in the Group 1 Patron's Bowl in June, the highly credentialled Captain Obvious is chasing some Singapore "black type" of his own.

His preparation kicks off on Sunday in the Group 3 S$200,000 (RM520,000) Woodlands Handicap over 1200m.

Now in the care of Steven Burridge — who also prepares Speed Baby — Captain Obvious has come down from Malaysia after winning 10 of his 15 starts.

With a 117 rating, Captain Obvious is the third highest rated galloper on the Malayan Racing Association ratings list behind Rocket Man on 125 and Better Than Ever at 118.

Burridge said Captain Obvious had done enough on the track to indicate a forward showing on the Polytrack yesterday but said the weight he was giving his rivals would be a distinct disadvantage.

Previously prepared in Malaysia by Chong Keng Leong, Captain Obvious will be aimed at some of Singapore's richer upcoming weight-for-age races that include the Group 3 S$200,000 Jumbo Jet Trophy over 1400m on Sept 4, the Group 1 S$500,000 Kranji Mile over 1600m on Oct 2 and the Group 1 S$500,000 Raffles Cup over 1800m on Oct 23.

"This race is a good starting point for him," said Burridge. "While the handicap conditions make it tough for him, the only other option was to be taking on the Kranji Stakes A against Rocket Man a week before the Jumbo Jet.

"The weight-for-age races like the Jumbo Jet, the Kranji Mile and the Raffles Cup are his aim so we can kick him off here and get a guide on him." Saimee Jumaat will have his first ride on Captain Obvious on Sunday but he is only warming the saddle for regular jockey Benny Woodworth who has ridden the gelding in all-bar-one of his 15 starts for nine wins.

"Woodworth was coming down to ride him but he's gone off to Korea to ride in a Jockey's Series and will be away this weekend," said Saimee.

"As a favour to K L Chong — and we go alongway back to the days with Free Spirit —I was asked to ride this horse in some of his work and in his trials.

"He feels like a nice horse. I've ridden him in his three trials.

"His last trial was very good, running 59.6 seconds when I clicked him up in the last bit and his gallop during the week was good.

"Steven has got him as fit as he can on the training track and with his trials but racing is different again." Saimee said he faces a stiff task giving 6.5kg in weight to established sprinter Ca - pablanca and up to 9kg to Merchant and Dictator as-well-as the up-and-coming sprinters like Ato and Rapido Star.

"He is a superstar in Malaysia but we just have to see how he measures up down here against the Singapore horses," s aid Saimee.— STC

RATTAN WEAVERS

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 11:32 AM PDT

2011/08/10
By Sim Bak Heng

A group of women from Labis, Segamat, are keeping the art of basketry alive by making and teaching those interested

THE rattan handicraft is fast becoming a sunset cottage industry.

It is rare to see rattan baskets these days as most products are made of plastic in factories.

Making rattan baskets is time-consuming and in a fast-developing economy like ours, with ample job opportunity in cities, very few people are interested in going into handicraft-making.

However, a group of women from Rancangan Tanah Beliawanis in Labis, Segamat, are helping to keep this handicraft alive by learning to make rattan baskets and organising workshops to teach those interested.

Some samples of their basketry are being put on display in a workshop in the village, and those who want to purchase them will have to place their orders.

Halimah Atan, 58, who makes baskets of different sizes and designs, ventured into the industry in 2004 after she learned the art from Kraftangan Malaysia at Jalan Datin Halimah in Johor Baru.

Today, she has trained some 60 people, but she is not sure how many of her students ended up in the industry after mastering the art.

"When Kraftangan Malaysia showcases new designs, I will attend their courses to pick up what is new," she said.

"Basket-making is a creative industry. Without new designs to cater to the ever-changing needs of the people, it will be difficult to promote the art, sustain the industry, and make a living from it."

Among the types of baskets produced at the workshops are those for fruits or flowers, laundry, hampers, grocery shopping, storing eggs, magazine display and holding umbrellas.

There are also smaller ones like those that are used for Malay weddings.

The time taken to make each rattan product varies from only 20 minutes for an egg basket to two days for a laundry basket.

Price-wise, an egg basket costs only RM2 while the laundry basket is more than RM100.

Of all the products, the most saleable is the hamper basket and the order for it is especially high during festive seasons.

To add value to the products, Halimah will dye some of the rattan to create a contrast when weaving the basket, and this is part of the creative process.

As it is a small industry and Halimah is not able to afford the cost of advertising her products, she makes full use of opportunities to promote them at carnivals, fun fairs and family days.

"I participate in such events for the sake of promoting my handiwork, and not just to make money. After all, these baskets are all hand-made and not produced at factories. That is why we can't cope with big orders," she said.

"But we are delighted to see people coming to our stalls and appreciating our products."

Halimah is assisted by her sister Jamlimah and friend Siti Normah Masdar.

As they are operating from a small and simple workshop with limited facilities, Halimah hopes the government can provide a bigger and more comfortable building to work in for the sake of the industry.

To learn more about rattan handicraft, call Halimah at 07-927 0616.

Court strikes out suit on eviction notice

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 11:02 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today allowed an application by the mayor of Kuala Lumpur to strike out a suit by the residents of Bukit Jalil Estate over an eviction notice and demolition of their houses.

Justice Datin Zabariah Mohd Yusof, who made the ruling in chambers, also ordered the residents to pay RM10,000 in costs to the mayor.

Counsel Ashmadi Othman, who appeared for the mayor, told reporters the judge held that there was no merit in the application and also no cause of action against the mayor.

Asked whether, with the ruling, the mayor could demolish the residents' homes, Ashmadi said he could but he did not know what the mayor's next step would be.

Counsel K. Ragunath and Muhammad Afiq Mohamad Noor acted for the residents.
Muhammad Afiq said they would appeal against the court's decision.

In the application, filed on May 27, the mayor sought to strike out the claim on the grounds that the suit was vexatious, frivolous and abuse of court process.

The residents filed the suit on March 14 against the mayor, seeking a declaration that the plaintiffs had exclusive right and equity on the land and sought an injunction to prevent Kuala Lumpur City Hall from demolishing their homes.

On May 10, Justice Zabariah dismissed their application for an interim injunction to stop City Hall from demolishing their homes.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal dismissed their appeal over the injunction. The Bukit Jalil Estate, formerly made up of 18,000 acres (7,284 ha), was reduced to 26 acres (10.5 ha) after recent development of the land.

During the hearing of the injunction on April 27, the court was told that City Hall had given 26 acres of the land to the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department to build a Muslim cemetery.

The residents' counsel Ragunath had submitted that the residents were not squatters as they did not trespass on the land.

He said they had been living there for some time after the estate was sold to a private developer.

Ashmadi countered that the mayor was only carrying out his public duty by issuing the eviction notice and that the suit against the mayor was improper.

Malaysians urged to be cautious of riot-affected places

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:34 PM PDT

LONDON: In the wake of riots and looting in the United Kingdom, Malaysians visiting or living in the UK have been urged to exercise maximum caution and avoid areas that are presently characterised by rioting and violence.

"We've issued a safety advisory asking Malaysians to be cautious and be aware of the present uneasy situation in the country which they should bear in mind while travelling," Datuk Zakaria Sulong, the London-based Malaysian high commissioner told Bernama.

Zakaria explained that the high commission had issued a safety advisory which was different from a travel advisory.

"We haven't issued any travel advisory. We've merely asked our nationals to be cautious and take maximum precaution about their safety," he clarified.

Zakaria urged Malaysian nationals to check the high commission's website which had posted a "safety advice" for them.

The advisory reads: "Following the spread of riots and violent protests in various areas in London and a few other cities in the United Kingdom, all Malaysians living in or visiting the United Kingdom are advised to exercise maximum alert and vigilance while they are in public places, especially in areas affected by the riots."

According to a World Bank estimate, there are some 70,000 Malaysians living in the United Kingdom, forming the largest Malaysian diaspora in Europe.

Besides the physical assault on a young Malaysian by a group of thugs who later had his belongings stolen in broad daylight, there have been no other attacks reported on Malaysians so far.

"We would like to help any Malaysian national in distress," Zakaria said, adding that the mission was closely monitoring the situation in the UK.

However, as is the case with other Asians living in the UK, Malaysians have been shaken by this wave of violence.

Fear is particularly deep-seated among many Malaysian students, including those who travel to Malaysia Hall in London to offer prayers.

The Malaysian community has also been shaken by widespread rioting accompanied by looting incidents.

Indeed, the display windows of some of the shops in the direct proximity of Malaysia Hall had been smashed, with the contents of the shops having been emptied by rioters in a wave of frenzied violence.

Even though the police arrived in time to control the situation near Malaysia Hall, the sight of the looters descending on the shops sent shivers down the spines of many Asians, including Malaysians.

Meanwhile, an uneasy calm has returned to most parts of London but rioting continues in a number of other cities such as Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool.

The next few days will be very crucial for the law and order situation, according to British security experts. -- BERNAMA

People look up to police force

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 11:22 AM PDT

2011/08/11
By Syed Umar Ariff andFadhal A. Ghani
news@nst.com.my

JOHOR BARU: "They can call us what they want, but we will continue to serve and protect," said Johor police chief Datuk Mokhtar Shariff in reference to criticism of the force in its handling of the Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur last month.

He said despite the adversity, police must continue protecting the public.

"The nation's security was jeopardised by a group demanding electoral reforms last month.

"Bersih, an illegal organisation, even questioned the police's actions during the rally.

"The police now have to manage people's negative perception of us," he said during the Johor police monthly assembly at the state contingent headquarters.

Mokhtar said the public should realise they needed security forces.

"And so, the police will face challenges with courage and confidence to uphold their credibility and increase the public's understanding of the role of the police."

People interviewed by the New Straits Times yesterday said the police were proficient when it came to handling riots and illegal assemblies.

Mohamad Sawadi Azahar, 27, a company senior manager, said the police were experts in handling such situations with efficiency and professionalism.

"That is why our police are acknowledged as one of the best forces in the world."

The police's preventive measures and professionalism during the July 9 rally did not lead to property losses.

Businessman Hanizam Idrus, 36, from Ampang, said he was frustrated with the riots in London.

"Here, there were no reports of serious injuries on the part of demonstrators, even though several illegal assemblies have taken place over the years."

Security guard Aman Deep Singh, 24, of Kuala Lumpur, said he was shocked with what was happening in London.

"I have more respect for our police force now as they are professional when it comes to handling demonstrations to ensure there is no property loss or loss of lives."

Lee Kok Meng of Puchong said the police remained proactive, which was why the country was safe.

Ang Huei Wian said the police had proven their ability to maintain peace in a professional manner, even in tense situations.

"They can control a situation before it gets out of hand."

Zacky Nelson, 24, of Sentul, said the police were well trained to handle demonstrations.

"Look at London. Many buildings were burnt down and people were injured.

But you hardly hear anything of that sort happening here during illegal assemblies or rallies. I have great respect for our police."

Badminton / World Championships: Awesome Chong Wei

LEE CHONG WEI

LEE CHONG WEI

FINLAND'S Ville Lang couldn't contain his excitement after beating Indonesia's Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in the first round of the World Championships on Monday as it secured him a meeting with World No 1 Lee Chong Wei.

It was an experience that Lang could only savour for 29 minutes as Chong Wei was in inspired form and sauntered to a 21-10, 21-11 win at London's Wembley Arena.

Up next is an old foe in Park Sung Hwan but with Chong Wei displaying great form yesterday, it will take a massive effort from the South Korean to deny the Malaysian a place in the quarter-finals.

"I played much better today (yesterday) compared to the first round. I had a better feel on the conditions and just concentrated on producing my best," said Chong Wei.

Lang had played above expectations in the first round and with nothing to lose, was expected to throw everything at Chong Wei in a bid to make a name for himself.

But other than a slight wobble in the second game, Chong Wei was always on top and made full use of the tie to try out his tactics,

"The shuttles here are very slow and I had to make sure that I got my timing right. Lang tried but I am glad that I was able to vary my tactics to score the win."

Sung Hwan will be a different challenge as not only is he a dangerous player, he has made it a habit of scalping big names -- as was the case in last year's World Championships in Paris when he beat China's Lin Dan.

"Sung Hwan is a stroke player and with the shuttles being slow, the conditions will favour his style of game. However, I am not too worried after today's performance," said Chong Wei.

Coach Tey Seu Bock was also confident that Chong Wei would advance to the quarter-finals.

"There is a marked improvement in Chong Wei's game. His movement was much better and he also looked very comfortable on court. That was crucial ahead of the tougher battles that await," said Seu Bock.

He added Sung Hwan, though a much better player than Chong Wei's first two opponents, would find it hard against Chong Wei if the Malaysian repeats yesterday's performance. Sung Hwan beat teammate Shon Wan Ho 21-14, 21-10 yesterday.

"In this form, it is very hard to beat Chong Wei. If he stays focused and doesn't underestimate Sung Hwan, victory will be his."

The last meeting between the two was in the Sudirman Cup in May which ended in Chong Wei's favour, and Malaysia will be rooting for that to happen again today.

Veteran Wong Choong Hann, the only other Malaysian in singles action, was down to play Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana in a late second round tie yesterday.

Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong brushed aside a second game slump to beat China's Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan 21-6, 20-22, 21-15 to advance to theWorld Championshipsmen's doubles third round at London'sWembley Arena yesterday.

IT was a tie that lived up to expectations that it would be tricky but Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong brushed aside a second game slump to beat China's Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan 21-6, 20-22, 21-15 to advance to the World Championships men's doubles third round at London's Wembley Arena yesterday.

With tougher battles to come, fears were expressed that Kien Keat-Boon Heong were still afflicted with their infamous inconsistency but coach Rexy Mainaky allayed them, pointing out that it was the pair's first competitive match since arriving in England more than two weeks ago.

In fact, the players and Rexy were happy with the overall form as the tough workout -- the match lasted 66 minutes -- was just what Kien Keat-Boon Heong needed to get into competition mode.

"It was a satisfactory game as what we wanted was a good workout after having been in training for so long," said Boon Heong.

"The second game was due more to the China pair changing their tactics but overall, I think we did well considering that this was our first match here."

Kien Keat-Boon Heong had drawn a bye in the first round.

Kien Keat said it was good to get the first match out of the way.

"We now have a feeling of the competition. There was no pressure on us despite the China pair giving us a good fight," said Kien Keat.

Rexy said the fourth-seeded Malaysians played to plan in the first game.

"I told them that they could not let the China pair wake up and that is exactly what they did in the first game as they were in total control to win 21-6.

"However, China changed their tactics in the second game and this caused difficulty to Kien Keat-Boon Heong. They tried to attack their way through the China defensive wall but when their smashes didn't work, they lost a little confidence," said Rexy.

The coach, however, stressed that the Malaysians didn't do too much wrong.

"It may have gone to three games but Kien Keat-Boon Heong were in control. In fact, I was closely watching their body language and it was positive. Having coached them for so long, I wanted to see how exuberant and focused they were and I must say that I like what I saw."

Up next are either Germans Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler or Taiwan's Chen Hung Ling-Lin Yu Lan and Rexy preached caution.

"There have been several upsets already and we mustn't underestimate any pair."

Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui were also involved in a marathon battle but it ended in favour of their fourth seeded Japanese opponents Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa.

It was, however, a valiant battle that the Malaysians fought before the Japanese sealed their place in the third round with a 21-16, 22-24, 22-20.

Ng sisters Hui Lin-Hui Ern's campaign ended on Tuesday when they were beaten 21-10, 21-11 by Japan's Matsutomo Misaki-Ayaka Takahashi.

It was also the end of the road for mixed doubles Ong Jien Guo-Chong Sook Chin who were beaten 21-11, 21-15, by India's Diju Valiyaveetil-Jwala Gutta. The Malaysians had beaten Taiwan's Liao Min Chun-Chen Hsiao Huan 21-18, 21-16 in the first round on Tuesday.

National interest in the mixed doubles remains though as Chan Peng Soon-Goh Yiu Ling stunned England's 10th seeds Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork 21-19, 21-19 on Tuesday and play Singapore's Chayut Triyachart-Yao Lei today.
