Sime rebounds from 13-month low

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:44 PM PDT

Sime Darby Bhd rose the most in four months in Kuala Lumpur trading, rebounding from a 13-month low.

The stock climbed 1.2 percent to RM7.79 as of 9:15 a.m. local time, set for its biggest gain since May 11, snapping a three-day, 11.5 percent slump.

The recent slide was due to concerns Sime may have to make a general offer for Eastern and Oriental Bhd, UOB-Kay Hian Holdings Ltd. wrote in a report today.

The probability of such an offer is unlikely, it said. -- Bloomberg

Football / Olympics Qualifiers: Khairul prepares for busy night

Khairul Fahmi has to be at his best against Japan.

Khairul Fahmi has to be at his best against Japan.

KHAIRUL Fahmi Che Mat expects to be a busy man tomorrow when Malaysia open their Olympic qualifying campaign with a third round Group A match against Japan at the Tosu Stadium.

Having emerged unscathed in the previous two rounds against Pakistan and Lebanon, the national Under-22 team face their biggest test of the qualifiers so far.

And they come no bigger than Asian Games gold medalists Japan, who came through 4-3 on aggregate against Kuwait in the second round despite losing the away second leg 2-1.

Some of the Japanese players in the squad will not be unfamiliar to Khairul Fahmi, who faced nine of them at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

Nagoya Grampus striker Kensuke Nagai and Cerezo Osaka midfielder Hotaru Yamaguchi scored against the Kelantan shot-stopper in Japan's 2-0 preliminary victory in Guangzhou and will return to terrorise the Malaysian defenders.

"It will be a big match for us but we have prepared well and are ready to face Japan. We know they are a big team in Asia but we are only thinking about giving it our best and nothing else," said Khairul Fahmi, after playing in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Oman in Shah Alam on Thursday.

The team arrived in Fukuoka on Friday and settled in to do a few drills, especially the strikers who found goals hard to come by in the preliminary rounds.

All four of Malaysia's goals so far have been scored by midfielders Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor, Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria and Irfan Fazail (two), who has often been deployed as a second striker as the forwards struggle to find their range.

But Irfan is carrying a niggling knee injury which has coach Ong Kim Swee concerned.

"Irfan is the only player who is carrying an injury and we are worried he may not shake it off in time. We are monitoring his situation and hope he recovers soon," said Kim Swee.

Irfan would likely play in midfield along side K. Gurusamy against Japan but Abdul Shukor Jusoh is on standby to fill in as regular Gary Steven Robbat is suspended along with striker Ahmad Fakri Saarani.

Izzaq Faris Ramlan and Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim are favoured to start upfront although Kim Swee could spring a surprise by fielding the nippy Ahmad Hazwan Bakri or the agile A. Thamil Arasu.

The 20-year-old Hazwan has impressed this season by scoring seven goals for Kuala Lumpur in the Super League and is eager to make his Malaysia debut, having never played at any age-group level for the country.

"If I'm fielded, it would be the first time I'd be playing for Malaysia. I'm fortunate to have been called up and if given the chance, I hope to show Malaysians what I can do," said the Labuan-born Hazwan, who has a wicked left-footed swerving shot which has bamboozled several goalkeepers in the league.

DONALD Young of the United States could be one of two players offered the final wild card in the ATP Malaysian Open, which starts on Saturday at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Tournament director Nick Freyer said he will make an official announcement tomorrow.

"It will be a toss between Young and an upcoming Japanese player," said Freyer at the tournament's press conference yesterday.

"We tried to get World No 10 Tsonga (Jo-Wilfried) here but the Frenchman has opted for Metz."

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Belgian's David Goffin are the tournament's other wild card entries.

The tournament, which is one of only five World Tour stops in Asia, carries a total prize money of US$947,750 (RM2.9 million) and features a 28-player singles main draw and 16 doubles.

Russia's defending champion Mikhail Youzhny and former winner Nikolay Davydenko, together with Czech Republic's World No 9 Tomas Berdych, Spain's Nicolas Almagro and Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic are the top draws in the event.

Freyer picked Berdych, the top seed, as the tournament favourite.

"He has not won a title despite making 12 quarter-final appearances this year. I believe his wait will end in his third appearance in Kuala Lumpur.

"Almargo withdrew last year because of an injury. The Spaniard is also in good form."

Others in the tournament are newly crowned US Open doubles champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, Japan's Kei Nishikori, India's Asian Games champion Somdev Devvarman, Australia's Bernard Tomic and Canada's Milos Raonic.

Malaysia's Si Yew Ming will play in the doubles main draw with Ryan Harrison of the US.

It will be Yew Ming's third main draw appearance since the tournament's inception in 2009.

Yew Ming partnered Sweden's Joachim Johansson in the inaugural tournament but lost in their first match and the following year, he was beaten by India's Yuki Bhambri in the singles first round.

The 32-year-old again earned a wild card this year after proving himself in the National Tour, where he dominated all four legs.

"I want to be the first local to win a match in this tournament. The closest I came was winning a set in 2009," said Yew Ming.

The former Sea Games medallist will also play singles qualifying along with Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam and debutant Ahmad Deedat Abd Razak.

"This will be my first ATP tournament and it will be a exciting new experience for me. I am not setting a high target as this event will be my first major," said Ahmad Deedat.

Court sets Oct 4 to hear Mahfuz's suit against police and Government

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 12:39 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR:,/b> The High Court here has set Oct 4 to hear Pas vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar's suit against the police and government for alleged wrongful arrest and detention during the July 9 illegal rally.

Judge Harminder Singh Dhaliwal fixed the date in chambers after meeting with Senior Federal Counsel Iznan Izhak, who represented the defendants, and Mahfuz's lawyer Muhammad Faiz Fadzil.

Mahfuz, who is the Member of Parliament for Pokok Sena, Kedah, filed the suit on Aug 8, naming arresting officer Insp Mohd Zaid Madzizat of the Brickfields Police, the Brickfields police chief, the Inspector-General of Police and the government of Malaysia as the first to fourth defendants.

In his statement of claim, Mahfuz claimed that his detention at KL Sentral at 11.50am on July 9 was wrong, invalid, illegal and mala fide.

He claimed that the scene of the incident (KL Sentral) was not stated as a forbidden area in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court order issued on July 6. -- BERNAMA

Parties seek out-of-court settlement in Tajudin's suit against news portal

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 12:36 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR:,/b> The parties in the RM200-million suit brought by former Malaysia Airlines executive chairman Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli against The Malaysian Insider news portal are seeking to settle the case out of court, counsel for The Malaysian Insider said today.

Lawyer George Miranda said this after he, Tajudin's counsel Lim Kian Leong and the news portal's executive and journalist had met Judge Harminder Singh Dhaliwal in chambers.

The case had been set for case management today. After the meeting, the judge set Sept 28 for case management.

On Aug 18, Tajudin filed the suit over the news portal's publication of an article on the airline company.

He named The Malaysian Insider Sdn Bhd, its chief executive officer Jahabar Sadiq and journalist Shazwan Mustafa Kamal as defendants.

Tajudin, who helmed the airline from 1994 to 2001, had stated that the portal had published defamatory words in the article on May 31, 2011.

He also claimed that the portal repeated the defamatory words in other articles, despite a letter sent to it to not do so.

He said the Malaysian Insider, when responding to his letter, stated that the words in the article were not defamatory and that they had obtained the information from multiple sources.

Besides general damages of RM200 million, Tajudin is also seeking aggravated damages and interests. -- BERNAMA

Separatists might have carried out blasts to protest drug raids

KUALA LUMPUR: The triple bomb blasts in Sungai Golok, which killed four Malaysians, were believed to be part of a series of attacks carried out by a group of young separatists.

The Golok blasts came hours after the Thai news agency MCOT reported that a Muslim police officer and a defence volunteer were shot dead in a mosque during Friday prayers in Tambon Budi, Yala.

Another Thai media outlet reported that five soldiers were killed and another seriously injured on Thursday in an ambush in Pattani province.

The latest surge in violence has also sparked other theories, specifically on the identity of the perpetrators and their motives.

A Malaysian intelligence source did not rule out the possibility that Malaysian tourists were targeted as a strategy to pile pressure on the new Thai government.

The bombs were planted in "entertainment areas" known to be frequented by Malaysian tourists, he pointed out.

It could also be the work of a splinter group, made up of insurgents in their 20s and younger, said another source. "These youngsters are bolder and more active than their predecessor s." He said suggestions by the Thai authorities that it was the work of drug dealers were equally plausible.

"The new Muslim youth insurgents are known to use and trade in drugs.

Thus, it could be the work of Muslim insurgents upset with the raids on their business." The new group is said to be independent of other known insurgent groups, such as Patani United Liberation Organisation (Pulo) and its offshoots, Pulo Baru, Barisan Nasional Pembebasan Patani (National Liberation Front of Patani), Gerakan Mujahideen Islam Patani and Jemaah Islamiyah.

Unlike the predominantly Muslim provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, the other southernmost provinces of Songkhla and Satun have not experienced much violence.

Songkhla is a Buddhist-majority region while Satun is not part of the old Patani sultanate.

The combined population of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces is about 1.8 million, with about 80 per cent of them Muslims.

National Security Council secre - tary Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen Abdul Wahab said the incident must be investigated thoroughly.

"Any act of violence like the incident in Sungai Golok must be condemned, as innocent civilians have become the victims. It is most unfortunate that the victims included Malaysian citizens.

"We hope the Thai authorities will thoroughly investigate the incident and bring to book the criminals," he said in a text message to the New Straits Times yesterday.

He also advised Malaysians to exercise extreme caution when crossing into Thailand.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional needs to take extraordinary measures now as the Malaysian political landscape has changed, BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

"We must now talk about all the people and not just one race. We are going through a political transformation and the repeal of the ISA is a perfect example of this. We are looking for ways to solve people's problems."

He said there were small ways to touch the hearts of people and millions were not needed to do this.

"But, of course, there are bigger things that need to be done. If we touch everyone in some small way, support will be there. No need to campaign hard."

Speaking at the opening of the Malaysia Makkal Sakti Party convention at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday, Muhyiddin, who is deputy prime minister, said the government was sincere in helping Indians solve their problems and was ready to do all it could for the community.

He said many big things must be done for the community and people must realise that it was not just a day-to-day thing but a long-term plan.

"People now know better and we must listen to them. The government will help in whatever way it can. The government is your government anyway and BN is the only party that can help Indians solve their problems."

"We want Indians to be actively involved in them. The Tekun scheme which used to be only for the Malays, is now open to all and a certain amount has been allocated for Indians, and I urge all Indians to seize this opportunity.

"We had problems before but we will do more for the Indians now.

"My name may even be an Indian Muslim name and my wife has got Indian blood."

He said the government had also set up a cabinet committee on Indian affairs and hoped this would lead more Indians coming forward and participating in economic activities.

"You must be aggressive in this area."

Muhyiddin said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was willing to solve all issues raised by the community.

He said gangsterism and social and moral decay were creeping into society but "it is not just limited to the Indians as it is a national problem".

He added that political parties like Makkal Sakti should not be limited to political aspects in their struggles but must also handle such problems.

He said there were many Indian leaders in the opposition but questioned what had they done to address the problems of the Indians.

Muhyiddin said he was confident that 80 per cent of Indians would support BN in the coming election.

"We cannot rest on our laurels. When we work, the opposition is also working, spreading accusations and lies."

He said today's gathering showed a new ability to cooperate among BN parties.

"With Makkal Sakti's strength, BN will be stronger and people will realise that BN has expanded and become more inclusive."

On Makkal Sakti president Datuk R.S. Thanenthiran's suggesstion that the government carry out a humanitarian mission to help Sri Lankan Tamils, Muhyiddin said it was an excellent idea and promised to give it serious thought.

"We have a big heart and it's a humanitarian mission. I don't see why we can't do it."

RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan

2010/11/01
By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan
news@nst.com.my

GUA MUSANG: The health ministry has allocated RM1.1 million to the Kelantan state government to implement rural water development projects to ensure people living in rural areas receive clean and adequate water supply.

Deputy health minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Shirlin said the projects consist of
controlled wells, feed gravity system as well as piped connection from Syarikat
Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

"The allocation is channelled to state health department to implement the projects," she said after attending the handing-over of the projects to Sungai

Terah residents here.

She said to date, Kelantan received 84.7 per cent of clean water supply
encompassing 223,115 households.

Only 40,212 households have yet to have clean water supplied by the ministry or
by AKSB. She expressed hopes that Gua Musang will receive 100 per cent water supply as soon as possible. To ensure the water is safe for consumption, she adviced residents to follow a few simple rules, namely:

  • Boil water before drinking;
  • The wells and feed gravity system need to be chlorinated periodically to kill off bacteria and reduce contamination risk; and
  • Trees or plants near water catchment areas should not be cut down to prevent the water source from drying up.

She also said this year, Kelantan has recorded six cholera, 28 typhoid and 2,168

food poisoning cases to date.

"These diseases still pose a risk to rural folk," she said.

MCA praises PM

2010/11/15
By Chong Chee Seong

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's achievements since taking over the mantle of the country last April had received praise from MCA.

In commending Najib for his hard work, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said Barisan Nasional's victories in the Nov 4 Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections were due to the people's acceptance of Najib's 1Malaysia concept.

Dr Chua said the Chinese were pragmatic people who will support the Prime Minister for doing what is good for the country.

"MCA is confident the results (of two by-elections) will serve as momentum to regain support of the community for the next general election," he said after opening a RM500,000 building and a hall in the SJKC Chung Hwa 3 last Thursday.

The speech was made on Dr Chua's behalf by Johor MCA secretary Tay Puay Chuan, who is also MCA Muar division chief.

Dr Chua said Najib's assurance that BN pledges in Galas and Batu Sapi would be fulfilled was a positive step to win the trust and confidence of the people.

He said by making continuous changes, BN would become a party that will received strong support.

"The victory of the two by-elections is an indication that BN's is ready and will do well in the next general election."

Dr Chua also said the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was a clear-cut strategy and a roadmap towards making Malaysia a high-income economy.

Earlier, deputy youth and sports minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also the Muar MP, said investment in education was not measured by ringgit and sen but by quality.

Badminton: Kien Keat-Boon Heong remain best bet

Doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her believes Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong remain Malaysia’s best hopes for an Olympic medal in the men’s doubles.

Doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her believes Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong remain Malaysia's best hopes for an Olympic medal in the men's doubles.

AS far as men's doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her is concerned, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will still be Malaysia's best bets in the London Olympics even if their form is unconvincing.

This is because doubles Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah, who are ranked No 2 in the national team, are still not in the same league as Kien Keat-Boon Heong's, and it is hard for them to qualify for the Olympics unless they started winning the Super Series.

Kim Her feels that Kien Keat-Boon Heong would regain their world conquering form if Kien Keat starts reprising his role as the leader of the men's doubles squad and leads like Lee Chong Wei.

"Next year's Olympics are Kien Keat-Boon Heong's best opportunity to strike gold because this is the prime time of their career. We will try to do everything necessary to ensure they are successful in London," said Kim Her yesterday.

"Both are world class performers and have been around long enough to know what they are capable of. We want to ensure they are provided with a programme that is going to make them feel assured and push hard to regain their form.

"I want to see the Kien Keat of the old who has been the leader of the group and starting becoming an inspiration to Boon Heong and other players.

"As coaches, we have complete faith that Kien Keat and Boon Heong can make a strong comeback."

The national coaches will have a meeting with BAM high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj and manager Kenny Goh to finalise the programmes for the London Olympics.

Pang Cheh Chang has been long touted as the coach to guide Kien Keat-Boon Heong but Kim Her's experience as a much travelled coach and Rosman Razak's expertise in several areas will be utilised by the top pair in their resurgence,

As for V Shem-Khim Wah, Kim Her said they would find it hard to break into the top eight in the Olympic qualifying rankings as they are not consistent enough.

"V Shem-Khim Wah have progressed but they have not become an independent combination. A top class pair will show their pedigree during the crucial stages where a split second decision from them can make a difference between victory and defeat, and this is something V Shem-Khim Wah must master," said Kim Her.

"If a pair still keeps looking at the coaches during matches, they are going to struggle. They must believe their instincts and make decisions fast."

Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who turned 26 and 24 respectively yesterday, are competing in the Japan Open and upon return, they can be assured of a coaching staff waiting to reignite them.

Sapura's Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajuddin (left) tries to get past an Armed Forces Airod player yesterday. Sapura won 4-0.

YAYASAN Negri Sembilan (YNS) needed a ninth penalty corner to beat Nur Insafi 2-1 in the Premier Division of the TNB-Malaysia Hockey League yesterday.

YNS started off with a stroke of luck in the ninth minute when Nur Insafi Pakistan import Kashif Ali missed a penalty stroke, but Lady Luck deserted them in the 24th minute.

Harris Fadila scored off a field attempt, and that was the most exciting action of the first half.

Nur Insafi and YNS have each registered six foreign players, but there seemed to be a lack of understanding.

The second half was a midfield affair, but YNS started attacking after 15 minutes and won a string of penalty corners, but only got it right in their eighth attempt.

Pakistan import Ihsan Ullah Khan's 59th minute effort pulled his team level, and YNS started to attack more, looking for the winner.

And they got it in the 69th minute off their ninth penalty corner when Ullah struck again.

Meanwhile, Sapura chalked up an unimpressive 4-0 win over a weak Armed Forces Airod.

Sapura fielded four national players but only Azreen Rizal delivered with a hat-trick (eighth, 29th, 66th minutes).

The other goal was scored by Joel Samuel van Huizen in the 69th minute.

"While I am happy with the win and the four goals, we were playing in patches and that is an area we need to work on. In reality this was the first time they played together as a team as many of my players had work commitments," said Sapura coach I. Vikneswaran.

In another Premier Division match, unfancied UiTM scared the daylights out of UniKL when their Qatar import Sherza Ali scored in the 12th minute, but Noor Faeez scored off their fifth penalty corner in the 59th minute to hand UniKL one important point.

UiTM yesterday fielded all their five Qatar imports, Muhammad Rizwan, Sheraz Ali, Tariq Nazir, Sami Ullah and Sohail Mustafa.

RESULTS -- Division One: SSTMI-Thunderbolt 4 Uniten 2, Ipoh City Hall 0 BJSS 6.

Premier League: Armed Forces Airod 0 Sapura 4, Uitm 1 UniKL 1, Nur Insafi Penang 1 Yayasan Negri Sembilan 2.

FIXTURES -- WEDNESDAY: Premier Division -- Sapura v Maybank (6pm, Pitch I), UniKL v Yayasan NS (8pm, Pitch I), Kuala Lumpur HC v UiTM (6pm, Pitch II), Tenaga v Nur Insafi (8pm, Pitch II).

All matches at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

DIVISION ONE -- SSTMI-Thunderbolt v UNIMAP (Ministry of Education, 5pm), BJSS v Uniten (Ministry of Education, 8pm).
