RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan Posted: 15 Mar 2011 01:24 AM PDT RM1.1m for clean water in Kelantan 2010/11/01 By NST team in Gua Musang, Kelantan news@nst.com.my GUA MUSANG: The health ministry has allocated RM1.1 million to the Kelantan state government to implement rural water development projects to ensure people living in rural areas receive clean and adequate water supply. Deputy health minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Shirlin said the projects consist of controlled wells, feed gravity system as well as piped connection from Syarikat Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB). "The allocation is channelled to state health department to implement the projects," she said after attending the handing-over of the projects to Sungai Terah residents here. She said to date, Kelantan received 84.7 per cent of clean water supply encompassing 223,115 households. Only 40,212 households have yet to have clean water supplied by the ministry or by AKSB. She expressed hopes that Gua Musang will receive 100 per cent water supply as soon as possible. To ensure the water is safe for consumption, she adviced residents to follow a few simple rules, namely: Boil water before drinking; The wells and feed gravity system need to be chlorinated periodically to kill off bacteria and reduce contamination risk; and Trees or plants near water catchment areas should not be cut down to prevent the water source from drying up. She also said this year, Kelantan has recorded six cholera, 28 typhoid and 2,168 food poisoning cases to date. "These diseases still pose a risk to rural folk," she said. In commending Najib for his hard work, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said Barisan Nasional's victories in the Nov 4 Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections were due to the people's acceptance of Najib's 1Malaysia concept. Dr Chua said the Chinese were pragmatic people who will support the Prime Minister for doing what is good for the country. "MCA is confident the results (of two by-elections) will serve as momentum to regain support of the community for the next general election," he said after opening a RM500,000 building and a hall in the SJKC Chung Hwa 3 last Thursday. The speech was made on Dr Chua's behalf by Johor MCA secretary Tay Puay Chuan, who is also MCA Muar division chief. Dr Chua said Najib's assurance that BN pledges in Galas and Batu Sapi would be fulfilled was a positive step to win the trust and confidence of the people. In second place and US$176,791 richer was World No 1 Yani Tseng of Taiwan who ended with 14-under 270, while Spaniard Azahara Munoz was third on 12-under 272. Na Yeon, ranked World No 4, had a nervous end-game, but kept her composure to avoid a play-off. The fact that Kelly finished tied 65th in a field of 72 was lost in the jubilation, as the 17-year-old amateur was the best Malaysian performer, and even outshone two local professionals when she returned a 13-over 297. The promising youngster, who had rounds of 77-73-74-73, stood tall among the illustrious LPGA field. Najib said: "First of all, I would like to congratulate Sime Darby for hosting such a magnificent tournament which was broadcast live to many countries. "Having said that, Malaysia is noted for being the best organiser in the world, but we have yet to show that we can win as well." "Na Yeon won because she has the skills and temperament to become a champion, which are also needed to win elections," quipped the prime minister. Najib: Umno will not claim leadership in Penang Posted: 15 Oct 2011 09:57 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today assured Gerakan that Umno will not claim the state leadership in Penang if the Barisan Nasional (BN) is given the mandate to rule the state in the next general election. Addressing Gerakan's 40th National Delegates Conference at Menara PGRM here, Najib, who is BN chairman and Umno president, said he believed that there is still hope for the BN to recapture the state. He said Umno is prepared to work together with the other BN component parties to wrest back the state. "Umno will never claim the state leadership in Penang. We are prepared to work together with component parties in Penang. "Gerakan, MCA, MIC and Umno must work together as one family. We must be part of the solution, not part of the problem. We must do that. If we work together, I am not going to give up on Penang," he told the 2,200 delegates when opening the conference. Najib stressed that the BN must convince the people that it is the better choice for them. "Some say that there is no hope (for the BN) in Penang. No. We must work hard, prove to them that we are the better choice compared to the opposition. This is about democracy; this is about choice. "We must give the people a choice. We must show them that we are the better choice for them in Penang and for the people of Malaysia," he said. Penang is now administered by the DAP-PKR-PAS pact which won the state in the general election in 2008. Najib said he has already discussed the matter with Penang Umno Liaison Committee Chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman. At a news conference later, when asked whether Gerakan would lead Penang if BN were given the mandate to rule the state, Najib said he had to discuss the matter first with other BN component parties. "BN will come up with our position later on. But it will not be an Umno candidate," he said. When addressing the delegates, Najib said he could sense the upbeat mood among the delegates and expressed the hope that the mood reflected their spirit to face the next general election. The prime minister said he wanted Gerakan to "rise to the challenge" and return to its glory days. He said Gerakan should focus more on the future instead of reminiscing the past. "The past is the past. What happens now is about the future, near future. We want Gerakan to recover and be a force to be reckoned with in the context of national politics," he said. In order to recover, Najib stressed, there was a need to present an alternative plan and line-up, particularly for Penang. Although there would be painful and difficult choices to be made, he reminded Gerakan that the choice "not to do anything" was a lot worse. "If you want to walk the talk, be bold. Take the high moral ground. Be prepared to walk the talk. It's the only way Gerakan can survive as a political party," he said. When asked at the news conference about Wanita Gerakan chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe's call for Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon not to contest in the next general election, Najib said he would leave it to Dr Koh to decide on that. PORT DICKSON: The government will try to pay the RM100 schooling assistance announced in the 2012 Budget by December this year, Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said here, yesterday. This was to ease the burden of parents, especially those with many school-going children, he said. "We were initially supposed to make the payment in January. However, I met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Friday and told him the money would be useful for parents to purchase school uniforms, bags and other necessities. "The ministries of finance and education will work out the details and we will do our best to make the payments to 5.3 million school-going children in December," he said before handing out land ownership documents and aid to residents of Kampung Paya, here. Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the schooling assistance would cost the government more than RM500 million. He said all payments would be made in cash and through the respective schools. However, students studying at private schools would not be eligible for the assistance. In the 2012 Budget, Najib, who is also Finance Minister, announced that all primary and secondary students from Year One to Form Five nationwide would receive schooling assistance amounting to RM100 each. Muhyiddin, who was in Negri Sembilan for a day-long visit, had earlier launched the Raja Melewar Sports Teachers' Training Institute in Seremban, which is the first of its kind in the country to train teachers to become coaches and technical officials. Two other designated teachers' training institutes, the Perlis Teachers Training Institute and the Tun Abdul Razak Teachers' Training Institute in Sarawak were also simultaneously upgraded as Sports Teachers' Training Institutes during the launch. Muhyiddin said the launch of the institutes were in line with the one student, one sport policy. "Each student must participate in at least one sport in school. This would help them be more well-rounded, disciplined and self-confident, while also enhancing racial integration." Muhyiddin also dismissed claims that the Education Ministry practiced favouritism when awarding recognition to certain schools and that it was based solely on a school's achievements. "It is unfair to make these allegations when there is no proof. If anyone has proof that our system has been manipulated, then please give it to me and I will personally look into it." He said his ministry would also look into a proposal that only students who attended 80 per cent of classes during the academic year be allowed to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. examinations. BN will make adjustments on electoral seat allocation Posted: 15 Oct 2011 10:34 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today the Barisan Nasional (BN) will make adjustments to the existing formula on allocation of seats for the next general election. Najib, who is BN chairman, said the adjustments were necessary to adapt to the local circumstances due to a change in the political dynamics. "The formula on seat allocation was drawn up in 2004 and applied in 2008. For the next general election, we have to consider whether there has been a change in the political dynamics requiring us to make adjustments. "Leaders of the BN parties will hold discussions to come up with the best formula on the allocation of seats," he told a news conference after opening the 40th Gerakan national delegates conference at Menara PGRM, here. He said the leaders of all the BN component parties agreed in principle and spirit to come to a compromise and that he would have discussions with them to work out the best formula. "We will not do a complete overhaul, but make adjustments where necessary," he said. Earlier, when addressing the delegates, Najib said the adjustments would enable the BN to review its strengths and weaknesses in drawing up its general election strategy, including selecting winnable candidates. He said all BN members should place their trust in the BN top leadership to determine the winnable candidates, and support them. Acting on a tip-off, police in Bazhou city in the northern province of Hebei arrested the doctors last month as they prepared to remove a kidney from a man, a local Communist Party official and police told AFP today. The case is under investigation, they said, declining to provide further details. China banned organ transplants from living donors other than spouses, relatives and adopted family members in 2007, the official Xinhua news agency said today. But demand for transplants far exceeds supply in the country of more than 1.3 billion, opening the door to the illegal sale of organs. The country launched a trial programme last year to allow people to voluntarily donate their organs after death in order to meet increasing demand, Xinhua said. An estimated 1.5 million people are waiting for transplants but only about 10,000 people have registered so far as donors, it said. PM's Kluang visit: A commentary Posted: 27 Mar 2011 03:59 AM PDT 2011/03/27 By Shahrum Sayuthi news@nst.com.my I WAS quietly amused when my hometown friend Fiona reacted with much enthusiasm when I told her that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was making a stopover at her alma mater, the Chong Hwa High School, during his visit to Kluang on Saturday. She is after all a DAP supporter and had not made it a secret to me who she voted for when she had cast her vote for the first time in the 2008 general election. "Oh my God! That's so great of him!" was what she text messaged me in return before proceeding to relate how when as a student she had, along with others, lined the street leading to her school when then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went there in 1987. "That was the last time a prime minister visited our school. I remember it was a very hot day and we were sweating, but we were all so happy that a prime minister visited our school," she added. If Fiona was at the school on Saturday, she may have thought she had been transported back in time to that day. The over 2,000 students, in their all white uniforms, were equally enthusiastic in welcoming Najib. The highlight of Najib's visit to the school was when he mentioned in his speech the government's "landmark decision" to allow Unified Examinations Certificate holders with three credits including passes in Bahasa Malaysia and English, to take part in the special intake for the Chinese language degree course to become Mandarin teachers. The students cheered as he made the announcement. "We (the government) are committed to being fair to everyone and will continue to strive for this. Dreams will not be realised until we are at peace with one another," Najib had said. My colleague Chuah Bee Kim interviewed some of the students and teachers on how they felt about Najib's visit. Seow Yu Sheng, 15, a Form Three student said it was a memorable day as it was the first time he had seen the prime minister in person. "I am happy to see him. Furthermore, he was here today to launch our school's green programme which my teachers have always promoted among us," he said. Another Form Three student, Dana Lim, 15, echoed Seow's sentiment but lamented that Najib's hour-long visit was such a brief one. "My classmates and I nonetheless feel very honoured to have the prime minister at our school," Lim said. Liong Kok Kiong, 32, a geography teacher at the school for the past six years said the announcement made by Najib regarding UEC holders was very uplifting as it was a step towards the success of the 1Malaysia policy. "I also hope that Najib's visit will encourage more English language teachers to join our school as we need more of them here," he said. Later in the night, Najib attended a "dinner with the people" function at down town Kluang which was attended by more than 10,000 people. Such was the overwhelming response given by the crowd when Najib arrived at the function that Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had to pause several times to compose himself while delivering the welcoming speech. Expressing his pleasure, Najib in his speech, suggested that judging by the crowd's response at the function and during his walk-about in several parts in Kluang earlier in the day, Barisan Nasional may probably recapture the lost ground it suffered during the coalition's disastrous outing in the 2008 general election. He told the crowd how an old Chinese lady gave him a 51-year-old Jalur Gemilang during the walk-about. "I was so touched because she told me that it was a gift for my effort in initiating 1Malaysia," he said to thunderous applause from the crowd. The prime minister probably had in mind that Kluang, with its huge Chinese community, was the DAP's first stronghold in Johor before it was overwhelmed there by BN in the late 1970s. However, in 2008, DAP captured the Mengkibol state seat there when its Ng Lam Hua defeated Gan Ping Shou of MCA by a majority of 1,281 votes. Ng had got 13,538 votes while Gan received 12,257. When Najib announced an allocation of RM105 million for the construction of a dam in Kahang to ensure no recurrence of a water supply problem which hit Kluang during last year's Chinese New Year, I immediately sent a text message to Fiona. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the students, aged between 18 - 25 years old were taken to the district police station and released soon after. "We are investigating if the students are from Gua Musang or outsiders," he said after a briefing at the police operations centre here. He said they would also work with the Election Commission and the students' universities during their investigations. The students are from a group, calling themselves Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam SeMalaysia (Gamis) and were allegedly distributing brochures urging the locals to exercise their democratic right to vote. A spokesman yesterday said the group represented students from various universities and had come to Galas to observe the campaign process and also explain to the people certain national issues, including the 2011 budget and how it effects them. Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the detention of the students should not be politicised as they were merely detained for not possessing a valid permit to distribute the pamphlets. "The students were not aligned to any political party and were merely there to urge the people to come out and vote. They are acting on their own and nothing to do with their respective universities. "However, I would like to advise these students to go home and concentrate on their studies instead," he said when contacted. THE perfect 10 was achieved and Lee Chong Wei said farewell to the local circuit after another overwhelming victory in the National Grand Prix Finals at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday. Chong Wei, who first won the title as a 20-year-old in 2003, hardly raised a sweat beating newcomer Goh Soon Huat 21-11, 21-5 in just 29 minutes. Chong Wei had earlier announced that it will be his last appearance on the local circuit and stressed again that it will not only help him focus on his target to win gold in the London Olympics but also give the younger players a chance on the National GP Finals next year. The fact that local events had often disrupted his preparations for international events is the main reason why Chong Wei doesn't want to take any chances next year in the hope that London will provide him with a final chance of nailing an Olympic gold. Chong Wei will be competing in the Denmark Open, beginning on Tuesday, and the French Open in Paris which begins on Oct 23. "I have always put emphasis on the local circuit and now that I have won 10 straight titles, I want to focus on the international scene and my preparations for the London Olympics next year," said Chong Wei. "Not that I can win international honours by skipping tournaments but I don't want my preparations to be disrupted. It always creates a doubt when I am unable to go through my training fully and I don't want to take any chances next year with the Olympics being the priority." He added: "My target in the Denmark Open and French Open is to gain sufficient Olympic ranking points so that I can maintain my No 1 position going into the Olympics." Soon Huat said there is no chance of him beating Chong Wei but felt it was a good experience playing the latter in his first final on the national circuit. "I couldn't cope with the pace but it was a good experience. He will not be around next year and I want to take advantage and it will give my better chance of winning the title." The tournament saw new champions crowned in the other four events. Lydia Cheah, beaten finalist on four previous occasions, ended her jinx when she beat Tee Jing Yi 21-14, 21-17 to secure the women's singles crown. Mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were third time lucky when they defeated Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei 21-15, 21-14. Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock, playing in their last tournament together, clinched the men's doubles crown when they edged Vountus Indra Mawan-Lutfi Zaim Khalid 19-21, 21-15, 21-19. Women's doubles Vivian Hoo and Khe Wei also clinched the title for the first time as a pair when they beat Chin Eei Hui-Goh Liu Ying 17-21, 21-15, 21-15. Roberto Mancini left Edin Dzeko, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero out of his starting line-up but City were still too powerful for Villa, one of only four unbeaten sides in the league prior to the match. Mario Balotelli's fourth goal in as many games put City head on 28 minutes, the Italian striker hooking in an overhead kick from close range after Villa failed to clear Adam Johnson's corner. Johnson turned goalscorer for City's second on 47 minutes before Vincent Kompany made it 3-0 five minutes later. Stephen Warnock pulled one back for Villa but City made it four through James Milner to leave Mancini's men brimming with confidence heading into next weekend's Manchester derby. In the early kick-off at Anfield, Manchester United came from behind to force a 1-1 draw with Liverpool. An 81st-minute equaliser from substitute Javier Hernandez salvaged a share of the points for Sir Alex Ferguson's men after Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had fired the Merseysiders ahead on 68 minutes.
