Billionaire Ross' IAC enters Malaysia Posted: 01 Nov 2011 06:30 PM PDT International Automotive Components Group, the auto-parts maker owned by billionaire Wilbur Ross, said it is expanding in Asia through joint ventures with a Malaysian supplier in its home country and in Thailand. IAC will own 60 percent of a venture in Thailand with APM Automotive Holdings Bhd, while in Malaysia, IAC will hold a 40 percent stake, Ross's company said yesterday in a statement. IAC and APM said they will design, engineer and manufacture instrument and door panels, floor consoles, flooring and acoustics, package trays and rocker panels for global automakers and domestic companies in the region. "IAC considers the ASEAN region to be very important," Jim Kamsickas president of IAC North America and Asia, said in the statement. "APM and IAC share similar visions for business, along with core competencies and experience in automotive interiors, comprehensive manufacturing capability and commitment to providing exceptional customer satisfaction." Ross assembled IAC through 14 takeovers starting in 2006. IAC, which makes instrument displays, door panels and headliners, had sales of about US$3.75 billion in 2010, 6 percent of it in Asia. The company employs about 22,000 people in 16 countries. AirAsia Japan to add long-haul flights in 2013 Posted: 01 Nov 2011 06:33 PM PDT AirAsia Japan Co, the start-up airline backed by the region's biggest low-cost carrier, will add long-distance flights in 2013 as it seeks to lure holidaymakers and budget travelers with cheap flights. The airline may offer services to Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore after introducing widebody Airbus SAS A330 planes, Chief Executive Officer Kazuyuki Iwakata said in interview yesterday. The company will begin short-haul routes from Tokyo's Narita airport in August with single-aisle A320s. AirAsia Japan may order the A330s with part-owner AirAsia Bhd. to help win lower prices, Iwakata said without elaboration. The Japanese carrier is also counting on AirAsia's regionwide operations and marketing to help it carry 10 million passengers annually within five years. "We don't view our competitors as ANA and JAL as much as resorts such as Tokyo Disney Resort," Iwakata said, referring to full-service carriers All Nippon Airways Co and Japan Airlines Co. "We're aiming at families who want to enjoy the weekend or people who play Pachinko -- we want them to be able to think about taking a flight as easily as they would hop on a bus." SINSEH ON WHEELS Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:20 AM PDT 2011/10/31 By Sim Bak Heng Every fortnight, a group of Chinese physicians and volunteers treat the sick at a mobile clinic FROM the outside, it looks like an ambulance. But this vehicle carries out a bigger and much nobler mission. Named Bangkit Mobile Clinic, it operates from one place to another, without a permanent base. It will tend to the needs of patients once a fortnight. The body behind this social service is Yayasan Bakti Nusa Malaysia, a non-governmental organisation of which former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is executive adviser. The interior of the mobile clinic is specially modified and fitted to provide a bed and other basic medical facilities. Backed by a team of professionally-trained Chinese physicians, the clinic is aimed at providing free consultation, treatment and medicines for the poor and needy, irrespective of race and religion, as well as promoting awareness of healthcare. So far, the foundation has a mobile clinic each in Penang, Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Johor. Usually, the mobile clinics cooperate with another party to provide its services. The mobile clinic started operations in Johor, in May, led by James Wu. He is assisted by eight Chinese physicians, headed by Y.S. Song, and 20 volunteers. Wu said the mobile clinic promotes a healthy lifestyle, and shares with the public how to live a cancer-free life. "We are working with a team of dedicated and compassionate Chinese physicians who are willing to contribute their time, energy and money for a worthy cause," he said. "More importantly, we run the clinic based on a common understanding with the local community, which is to promote Chinese healthcare services to benefit the poor and needy in the community who are seeking an alternative way of treatment," he said. To date, it has provided nine sessions of treatment in different parts of the state. The Chinese physicians give up their Sundays twice a month to provide their social services from 2pm to 6pm, when the mobile clinic is in operations. However, it is usually after 8pm when the session ends. Volunteers from different walks of life provide registration, coordination and prescription services. All consultations are done at the halls of the respective premises. For those who need acupuncture, cupping or tuina service, it is done inside the mobile clinic. To provide them the best service, each patient has to go through two levels of consultation. An attending Chinese physician will diagnose the patient's problem, then Song will personally screen, diagnose and prescribe treatment. As this is an NGO, all funding is from private donors, mostly businessmen. The cost of medicines alone in each outing of providing medical service to about 70 patients runs up to about RM3,500. Wu said he is looking forward to seeing more good Samaritans provide financial assistance to keep the mobile clinic afloat. "As we believe in using the best medicines for our service, the prescription cost for each patient easily comes to about RM50," he said. "This is despite our having secured the best pricing for our medicines from suppliers, who know we are running a charity," he added. From fireman to masseur Posted: 31 Oct 2011 09:00 AM PDT THE Johor Baru city landscape has changed since I moved to Kampung Pasir from Muar in 1954. It was once the only major town and became a city and is poised to soon become a metropolis as part of the Iskandar Malaysia economic growth region. I tasted the best of the past, when the lifestyle was much simpler and the cost of living cheaper. During the late 1950s, the average rent for a house in Kampung Pasir was between RM7 and RM18. This is a far cry from the current rent rates but not all homes had electricity then, and we relied mainly on kerosene lamps. Piped water was practically unheard of and villagers fetched water from the wells. However, things began to change when I enlisted in the Malayan Armed Forces as a fireman in 1957 and was then attached to a barracks. I was posted to the Alexander Army Camp in Singapore before being sent to the Tebrau Army Camp, followed by my last posting in 1969 at the Paroi Army Camp in Negri Sembilan. I left service and returned in 1970 to Johor Baru, where I did several odd-jobs working in factories and canteens for four years. I joined the fire department in 1974. I was lucky to get the fireman's job, as I was already 34 years old. However, I also had more than a decade's worth of experience as a military fireman. In my 20 years of serving the Johor Fire Department, which was based in Larkin, I saw many changes taking place. Most notable was the growth of Johor Baru. Towards the late 1980s, development became rapid, with many residential areas opening-up. More development took place in the 1990s, with the opening of commercial complexes. As I was nearing retirement, I realised that I needed something to do. A former colleague introduced me to the art of traditional massage and I was interested to take it up at that time. This was about six years before I was due to retire in 1994. My decision to become a traditional masseur became my retirement plan. By the time of my retirement, I had already established myself as a traditional masseur in my home in Kampung Pasir, Tampoi. We had all the conveniences of modern living under one roof, which was different from the old days. As the cost of living was always escalating, I needed to do something to supplement my pension. Over the years, I have helped many people who have come to me mainly through word-of-mouth. My job as a traditional masseur took off rather well after my retirement, and the response has always been good. My 41-year-old daughter Samiah Ishak quit her job and also became a traditional masseuse, for my female clientele. People from as far as Penang, Pahang and Malacca come to me to treat various ailments, from simple backaches to torn ligaments and sprained ankles. I receive repeat customers from 10am to 10pm every day. The only problem I see now is that the younger generation, including my sons and grandchildren, have no interest in learning the art of traditional massage. People like me are considered a dying breed. Ishak Ahmad, 72, popularly known as Pak Sahak Bomba, is a retired fireman, who spends his time with his grandchildren when he is not offering traditional massage services in his home. Construction worker Ricky Pempengco, 39, was stabbed repeatedly late Monday after an altercation with another drinker in a street in an agricultural town south of Manila, police said. "They bumped into each other and from there, they got into a fight," said local police chief Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz. Police are still searching for the suspect in the killing, he added. Thursday's picket will be peaceful, assures MTUC Posted: 31 Oct 2011 11:03 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has given the assurance that the nationwide picket it plans to hold on Thursday will be peaceful. MTUC secretary-general Abdul Halim Mansor said the picket, to protest the amendments to the Employment Act 1955 that was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 6, would not disrupt public order because it would be held after office hours from 5pm to 6.30pm. He told Bernama when contacted that 18 locations had been identified for the picket and that the Inspector-General of Police had been informed about it. "Based on my experience in my 30 years with MTUC, I can assure you that the picket to seek better deal for workers be peaceful," he said, adding that there would be 300 to 500 people expected at each location. He said MTUC was not happy with the amendments, particularly the one about the appointment of a "contractor for labour", which allows employers to hire these contractors and not directly employing the workers. This would mean that the workers were working for the contractor and not for the employers, he said, pointing out that the employers would have no direct responsibility over the welfare of the workers, particularly in terms of remittance to the Social Security Organisation and the Employees' Provident Fund. "When a worker is injured in a workplace accident, how are we to deal with his compensation? This is going to be tricky because technically, the worker is not working with the employer, but he is doing work for the employer," he said. He said the MTUC was also feeling unease with other amendments of the Act such as those affecting part-time workers and their salary and allowance payments. "The amendments expose the workers to abuse especially in the hands of the contractors of labour. Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai told Dewan Rakyat today that government spending on petrol and diesel subsidies last year amounted RM9.6bil. He was replying to a question by Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) who wanted to know the actual amount of petrol and diesel subsidies borne by the government. Lim said the government is always concerned with the the people's welfare but at the same time has to address its financial capability to give the subsidies. "As such, the subsidies must be distributed carefully to ensure that only those in need benefit from them," he added. Train rams into tanker, 9 injured Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:42 AM PDT 2011/11/01 By Kristy Inus and Avila Geraldine news@nst.com.my KOTA KINABALU: Nine people, including a pregnant woman, were injured when a Sabah Railway passenger train crashed into an oil tanker at a level crossing near the Kota Kinabalu International Airport yesterday. The 5.30pm collision in Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Petagas caused a loud explosion and a huge ball of fire which damaged the first carriage of the train. The train, with three carriages, was carrying 200 passengers, including office workers, women and children. It was travelling from here to Papar while the tanker was transporting fuel to a petrol station located across the railway track. The injured were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. They were identified as Asmeh Papang, 43, Lily Shafura, 29, Rahimah Rahmat, 42, Rauziah Ramli, 37, Masitah Nila (who was pregnant but whose age was not given), Sardy Latif (no age given), Norfidah Jailani, 33, Isma Ismail, 18, and Joseph Philip Kulip, 50. The tanker driver, Dauleh Dausun, 41, and locomotive driver, Ali Ramli, 54, escaped unhurt. Police are questioning them on how the collision happened. When met at the scene, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the tanker driver was trying to drive across the track when the train reached the spot. The crossing did not have a guard or barrier to warn motorists of approaching trains. Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said the crossing was illegal and the state government would take action by closing all illegal crossings. Firefighters took more than an hour to douse the flames. Paramedics were kept busying ferrying the injured to hospital. The tanker driver said he was not aware of the passing train until it was too late. "I managed to jump out of the tanker before it hit my vehicle," Dauleh said. A regular commuter, Razmi Jaafar, 37, from Papar, who boarded the train at Tanjung Aru at 5.25pm, said there was no warning at all. "I was sitting in the first carriage when it happened five minutes into the journey. "I was talking to my friend and suddenly we heard a loud explosion. There were flames outside the window where we were seated. "We all panicked and there were much shouting and pushing in our rush to get out." Razmi, who escaped with a slight bump on the head, said they could not open the door or windows from the inside. "Finally, I managed to come out through a small gap in the window and opened the door from the outside." Despite his victory over the World No 2 in Paris, en route to winning the French Open, the 29-year-old must avoid defeat in future events as he cannot afford to be beaten by a second China shuttler, apart from Lin Dan, on a regular basis ahead of next year's London Olympic Games. BA of Malaysia (BAM) high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj said Chong Wei needs to work on a surprise element in his game to remain superior over Chen Long. "Chen Long plays like Lin Dan but is more deceptive due to his age and height. And this is dangerous," said James yesterday. "Chong Wei's inability to beat Lin Dan is more psychological but as for Chen Long, he is losing because this shuttler is playing better." According to James, China coaches have devised a new strategy for their players to adopt when playing Chong Wei. "They are telling their players to avoid net plays and also to send the shuttle to the corners against him. "In my personal view, Chong Wei must add a twist to his game by adding cross court strokes. I need to discuss this with his coach Tey Sue Bock," said the former international. James was also concerned with Chong Wei's fitness as he noticed that the player was breathing heavily against Chen Long in the final of the Denmark Open. "He was breathing hard. HE may not be a household name among golf fans on this side of the world yet but rookie Tom Lewis makes an exciting name to watch at this year's Iskandar Johor Open after his remarkable win at the recent Portugal Masters. Lewis, 20, chalked up his maiden professional win at the Portugal Masters in only his third professional appearance, equalling the record for fastest professional title win at three and bettering Tiger Woods who won in his fifth and Rory Mcllroy who captured his first title at the 38th time of asking. "I didn't expect my first win to come this soon at all," said Lewis who birdied five of his last seven holes to take the title by two strokes. "It's very much a relief not to have to go to the Tour School at the end of the year." With the win, the Englishman secured his European Tour card for the next two years, leapt 455 places on the Official World Golf Rankings to 166th and also jumped to third place on The Ryder Cup points table, as well as entering the all-important top 60 of The Race to Dubai. "I've not thought about the money -- I was thinking about winning," Lewis said of his incredible week where he had 22 birdies and only one bogey in the last 52 holes. "I've got a long way to go. This teenager loves children and aspires to be a nurse. Aware that her mother, Vimala Kannaiah, 41, works hard to earn a living, Sashi is diligently studying to achieve her ambition, and hopes to make their lives more comfortable someday. Iswari Rajendran, 19, works at a playschool in Johor Jaya and is taking child-education training courses to improve her skills. She lives with her mother, Puspalatha Sambasivam, 34, and grandmother, Nagamah Rangasamy, 62, a diabetic who needs to use a wheelchair because of a recent fall. These women were among 100 low-income families at the Deepavali event organised by Juita, in cooperation with JPMM DUN Permas (the coordinating body for the Permas state constituency), MIC Tebrau and MIC Pasir Gudang on Oct 16. Single mothers and their children, the underprivileged and handicapped, all supported by Juita, gathered in the Multi-purpose Community Hall in Permas Jaya to receive Deepavali goodwill gifts. Arriving in wheelchairs, on crutches and, for the blind, with the help of family members, the recipients happily received their gifts from Professor Datin Paduka Dr Jamilah Ariffin, Juita's President and wife of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman. Juita, also known as Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri Wakil-wakil Rakyat Negeri Johor, is an NGO actively involved in community welfare projects for women and children in Johor. Next year, Standard 6 students achieving first to fifth positions will be rewarded with incentives as Juita continues to challenge students to raise the bar of excellence in their studies. Juita's 14th project aims to provide aid to the Orang Seletar indigenous people in various villages in Johor. Jamilah said Juita plans to upgrade community halls, improve jetties, provide skills training and paint homes. She encouraged corporations and socially responsible individuals to contribute to a RM 1 million trust fund so that the indigenous people would benefit from its dividends. "I guarantee that the trust is secure," she said,, citing a similar trust fund established for the Sinar Juita Children's Shelter, a home for abused children and abandoned babies. She said the dividends from the trust fund had helped to pay for the university education of deserving students and for the maintenance of buildings. In view of the current trend of single parents leaving their children in the care of grandparents to work full-time, Jamilah said Juita's next project will be to teach grandparents how to care for their grandchildren. With the nation's aging population on the rise, the younger generation will also be taught to take care of the elderly. She urged those who did not live with their parents to go home and celebrate festivals with their elderly relatives as it meant a great deal to them. Juita distributed RM200 each to 10 recipients. Gifts in kind, totalling RM4,000, were presented to each recipient in the form of a beautiful sari for the festive season. It was the beginning of his fascination with hairdressing, and the impetus for a career that now spans 20 years. "I used to follow my classmate to her parents' salon after school," said Alias, 41, who owns Zulhandam hair studio at Plaza Seni in Johor Baru. "Her father would cut the male customers' hair, while her mother did the women. "This classmate continues to run the family business in my hometown of Sungai Rengit, Pengerang." After completing school, Alias obtained a certificate for attending a year-long hairdressing course at the now-defunct Youth Skills Centre in Bukit Senyum, Johor Baru. He was 21 when he began working for a hair salon in Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak in Jalan Wong Ah Fook. He later switched to another salon at the City Square shopping mall. In 2006, Alias ventured out on his own to open the Zulhandam hair studio. The name is a combination of Arabic and Latin phrases that mean to step out in style. "I am 100 per cent passionate about what I do, because my customers entrust their heads to me. I must give my best to them." Though the majority of Alias's customers are men, he provides a separate space for women. He said the most popular hairstyle for men now was the mohawk, with slope gantung (hanging slope), in which thick hair at the back covers a closely cropped slope. He said women's styles were much more varied. Zulhandam's rate for a cut for short hair is RM9, while children are charged RM6. A cut and black hair colouring is RM40, while a cut and other colouring is RM50. Haircuts for women are priced at RM12 and above, while a haircut and colouring is RM60. Rebonding is priced at RM100.
