It was the most tweeted event in political history, Twitter says, and exceeded the activity on the social media site during the political conventions. The high point, however, didn't belong to either candidate vying for the White House. MORE: Romney's Big Bird comment lights up Twitter Moderator Jim Lehrer's quip "let's not" to Romney, who asked to move on to a different debate topic, generated a whopping 158,690 tweets per minute (TPM) at its peak. Lehrer's handling of the questioning and pacing of the debate opened the veteran journalist to criticism and sparked a parody Twitter account. Other comments that sent debate-watchers to Twitter: Obama's retort "I had 5 seconds" when protesting he still had time on the clock generated more than 152,000 TPM at its peak. As for substantive issues, the discussion about Medicare came in third with nearly 150,000 tweets per minute. There is little paid work, savings are drying up and even a lawyer can find himself reduced to selling loaves of bread on the street. Our colleague Mona Mahmood has been talking via Skype to Salema Mustafa, a teacher who lives in the government-controlled Nile Street area of the city. People who live in liberated areas of Aleppo can no longer can work there owing to the bombardment by the Syrian army. Many started coming to the unliberated areas to work because they are safer, like our district. [Street] vendors are everywhere here. People in the liberated areas who are living in schools as refugees have no work except as vendors in the street. I used to be a teacher but no longer – the schools are occupied by refugees. We are running courses in psychological support for the refugees. I'm trying to help these people to learn some skills to help them deal with the current crisis. These refugees are upset with the FSA. They believe they would not be subjected to shelling or have leave their homes if the FSA had not liberated their areas. I'm trying to help them to be positive and think of the real cause of the problem – but indirectly. In the beginning there was widespread resentment towards the FSA, but now they have begun to change their opinion – especially since the Syrian army started to target bakeries and mosques. People of Aleppo who in the liberated areas were not prepared for the revolution and are mostly uneducated – they are unaware of their rights. They think only of how to earn their living, not how to change the president. We are launching literacy courses for the refugees and help them to understand the political situation. We offer the refugees food, beds, blankets and clothes. Medical help also is offered – they have many cases of jaundice. We have 150 schools filled with refugees, each one has no less than 500 refugees and our help is reaching more than 30 schools in Aleppo. We started only three weeks ago. We have great problems with the refugees living in the university city – small rooms packed with people. As far as I know only three governmental schools are open in addition to few private ones. We are not sending our kids to schools and teachers do not dare [to risk] all these checkpoints to get to the schools. People are living out of their savings but they are now reaching the end. My friend is a lawyer, he has no work at all. Now he is queueing at bakeries and collecting bread to sell to people in the streets. Transport fares are three times more than before. If you are not suspected and your name is not with the Syrian army, you can get out of the city. But also we have the problem of gangs who will stop you, claim they are FSA and steal all your belongings. Travelling is a great risk. The FSA is also short of food and resources, so they take what they get here. People are upset about these practices, but in the end we need to get rid of the regime. A brigade from Azaz is kidnapping businessmen from Aleppo to take money for their release. My relatives and friends in Salaheddine district told me that they have seen Arab fighters there. They are good fighters but they are hardline Muslims. If they see someone smoking they point their gun at him. If they detain a man, they ask him: "How many pages of the Holy Quran did you memorise?" I do not know if they are all like this or not.

US stocks gain, HP shares plunge Posted: 03 Oct 2012 04:44 PM PDT NEW YORK: Hewlett Packard shares plunged Wednesday on concerns about the company's turnaround strategy but the markets overall closed higher, helped by firm reports on services sector growth and private hiring. Investors dumped HP, the shares closing down 13.0 per cent at US$14.90, after chief executive Meg Whitman said it would take time to turn around the company that built its fortune on printers and personal computers. That performance weighed down the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average, which finished up 12.25 points (0.09 per cent) at 13,494.61. The broad-based S&P 500 was stronger, gaining 5.24 points (0.36 per cent) at 1,450.99, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite added 15.19 (0.49 per cent) to 3,135.23 Market gains were underpinned by two positive data releases. The Institute for Supply Management's services industry PMI showed the crucial sector picking up pace, though hiring remained flat. Payrolls company ADP's private sector hiring report was better than expected, though at 162,000 jobs in September was still down by 14 per cent from August. "September is shaping up to be a better month than we were expecting judging by the two ISM reports (especially the improvement in orders) and the vehicle sales data," said analysts at RDQ Economics. "That said, the non-manufacturing ISM report did not support other labour market indicators that were suggesting a possible upside surprise as the employment index pointed to slower job growth in September." Trade was heavy in Wellpoint, which lost 0.6 per cent after Fitch downgraded the health benefits manager due to questions raised by its purchase of insurer Amerigroup. Discount retail chain Family Dollar jumped 3.9 per cent after reporting a 1.4 per cent increase in fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and forecasting steady growth in fiscal 2013. Second-tier wireless carrier MetroPCS confirmed its cash-and-stock merger with rival T-Mobile, creating a customer base of 42 million subscribers aimed at securing their footing in in a market dominated by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint Nextel. PCS shares fell 9.8 per cent, after having jumped 17.8 per cent on Tuesday in anticipation of the deal. AT&T and Verizon both gained 1.0 per cent, while Sprint Nextel picked up 6.1 per cent. -- AFP

During the next five weeks - and three debates - Romney will make an appeal to voters aimed at overcoming an Obama campaign that has outflanked his own for much of the past four months. Romney enters the final sprint to the November 6 election behind in national polls and trailing in most of the nine or so politically divided "swing" states that are likely to decide the election. Just as important, Romney trails Obama among likely voters on a broad array of issues and personal ratings that reflect the scope of the challenge Romney faces in trying to come from behind and snatch the presidency from the Democratic incumbent. A series of Reuters/Ipsos tracking polls indicate that Obama has small leads over Romney on separate questions about which candidate would best handle the economy and who could create more jobs, even though Romney has made his business experience as the head of a private equity firm the centerpiece of his campaign. Obama has double-digit leads on who would do better on taxes, 45 percent to 35 percent, and on dealing with the Social Security retirement program, 43 percent to 31 percent. Likely voters are particularly supportive of Obama on more personal issues. Romney, who has been portrayed by Obama's campaign as an out-of-touch millionaire, trails Obama by about 30 points among likely voters who were asked which candidate was more likable. Romney trails by 20 points on the question of which candidate best understood voters. Such questions touching on Romney's likability and empathy might pale in importance to questions about the economy and other domestic policies but taken together they present significant hurdles for Romney, whose difficulty in connecting with voters has been a constant problem of his campaign. "Those personal attributes are soft metrics," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said. "But they contribute to how much a voter trusts and feels comfortable with a candidate." AN 'IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY' Wednesday's debate is expected to be seen by about 60 million television viewers and will give voters a chance to compare Obama and Romney side-by-side for the first time. The Denver debate will focus on domestic policy and will be followed by a town hall-type session on October 16 in Hempstead, New York, and a session on foreign policy in Boca Raton, Florida, on October 22. The events will offer the candidates a way to cut through the considerable political noise surrounding a campaign in which more than $2 billion is being spent, much of it to attack the opposition. For Romney, the debates represent his best chance to reverse voters' views of how he stacks up against Obama by pressing his argument that Obama is a failure in managing the economy. The debates also will give Romney a chance to bolster his personal image, which has taken a beating in polls as Obama's team has cast him as an out-of-touch rich guy who, while leading Bain Capital, sent thousands of U.S. jobs overseas. "The debates are absolutely the right forum to move those numbers" in the polls, Clark said. "If Romney can gain ground on some of those personal questions, it could help him." Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has been taking time off the campaign trail for weeks to prepare for the debates, which a campaign adviser acknowledged on Monday represent an "important opportunity." "I think that focusing on the issues that people care about can make you more likable," Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden said. "And people will come away from the debates saying, 'You know what, Governor Romney, he understands some of the problems I'm facing every single day and he's got solutions to help overcome the country's challenges. And as a result I feel better about my vote for him,'" Madden said. DEFINING ROMNEY Obama's rise in recent nationwide and state polls has been aided by what several polls have identified as increasing optimism about the direction of the country, even as the economy continues to struggle. Reuters/Ipsos data shows Obama ahead of Romney 42 percent to 38 percent on the question of who would better lead the economy and 44 percent to 39 percent on who has the better plan to create jobs. Obama's campaign spent much of the summer and millions of dollars on ads that portrayed Romney as unable to relate to the concerns of middle-class Americans and criticized his leadership at Bain Capital, which critics say plundered some of the companies it took over and cut jobs in the name of profits. The Reuters/Ipsos polling of more than 1,600 likely voters indicates the tactics seemed to work. On the question of which candidate has the right values, Obama leads 47 percent to 37 percent. On which candidate is tough enough for the job, Obama leads by 45 percent to 38 percent, and on the question of which candidate better represents America, Obama leads 48 percent to 38 percent. "The White House has done the most effective job I've seen in negatively defining an opponent," said Peter Brown of the nonpartisan Quinnipiac University poll. "They have made Romney, in the eyes of many voters, a rich, unfeeling elitist who does not understand how Americans live their lives." Romney will have a chance to turn around that perception in Wednesday's debate. A Quinnipiac poll released on Tuesday found nearly one in 10 voters believed they could see something in the debates that would change their vote - a potentially significant number in a tight race. It also showed that a solid majority of voters expect Obama to win the debate, giving Romney an advantage in expectations heading into the encounter. "Romney does have a low bar," Brown said. Aleppo triple bombing kills at least 31 - Washington Post Posted: 03 Oct 2012 08:59 AM PDT BEIRUT — Three massive bomb blasts ripped through the heart of Syria's commercial capital, Aleppo, on Tuesday, killing at least 31 people and causing widespread damage to a major square amid continuing clashes between government forces and rebels for control of the city. The bombs, which apparently targeted a military officers' club, went off in rapid succession shortly before 8 a.m. The club was demolished, and the blasts also tore the facades off several nearby buildings in Saadallah al-Jabri Square, a part of the city that is tightly controlled by the government.

RHB starts IHH with ’outperform’ Posted: 02 Oct 2012 06:59 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Research initiated coverage of IHH Healthcare Bhd with 'outperform' rating and fair value of 3.53 ringgit per share, citing strong earnings growth prospects for the world's second largest private healthcare service provider through 2014. "While valuations are relatively expensive at 33.5 times 2013 price-to-earnings ratio, we believe there is still room for valuations to move higher given its strong earnings visibility and wider network of hospitals, which could result in significant savings from better economies of scale compared to its regional peers," the research house said in a note on Wednesday. RHB forecast core net profit growth of 5.8 percent for IHH in 2012, 25.9 percent in 2013 and 26.0 percent in 2014. "Singapore will be the main earnings driver for the company, driven by the gradual ramp-up of the new state-of-the-art Mount Novena hospital," it added. Maybank rates Yeo Hiap Seng at ’buy’ Posted: 02 Oct 2012 07:18 PM PDT Maybank Kim Eng initiated coverage of Yeo Hiap Seng Ltd with a 'buy' rating and a target price of S$2.25, on expectations of improving profitability and its exposure to the attractive food and beverage sector. By 0201 GMT, Yeo Hiap Seng shares were unchanged at S$1.96, but have surged nearly 69 percent since the start of the year. After restructuring, property developer Far East Organisation will emerge as a major shareholder of Yeo Hiap Seng, with a 66 percent stake in the company, Maybank said, adding that Yeo Hiap Seng is also planning to privatise its 61 percent owned unit Yeo Hiap Seng (Malaysia) Berhad, which will give it a larger share of profit from Malaysia. Maybank said higher expected margins for Yeo Hiap Seng will also drive future profit growth, and its huge landbank, especially in Malaysia where it owns over 2 million square metres of land, is worth at least S$250 million. Malaysia Marine upgraded to 'reduce' Posted: 01 Oct 2012 07:05 PM PDT Affin Investment Bank upgraded Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd to "reduce" from "sell" and raised its target price to RM4.60 per share from RM4.02, on optimism about the oil and gas service firm's future contract flow. "Taken together the 13 percent fall in share price year to date, we think that further downside is limited," the research house said in a note on Tuesday. Affin raised Malaysia Marine's FY2012-FY2013 contract win assumptions to RM3 billion-RM4 billion (US$980.23 million-US$1.31 billion) from RM2-3 billion previously. KL shares extend gains Posted: 01 Oct 2012 07:03 PM PDT Share prices on Bursa Malaysia extended their gains this morning supported by continuous buying interest from a majority of local participants. After 15 minutes of trading, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) earned 5.03 points higher to 1,648.34 after opening 2.36 points better at 1,645.67. HwangDBS Vickers Research, in a note today, said after chalking up cumulative gains of 30.9-point or 1.9 per cent over five straight days, the key FBM KLCI may pull back slightly in the near-term. "The immediate support and resistance levels for the benchmark index are currently seen at 1,635 and 1,655, respectively," it added. Meanwhile, Wall Street saw mixed closings last night when its bellwethers ended between -0.1 per cent and +0.6 per cent with overall sentiment lifted marginally by better US manufacturing data. The Finance Index surged 66.42 points to 14,660.24, the Plantation Index fell 4.99 points to 8,273.63 and the Industrial Index shed 0.15 of a point to 2,818.61. The FBM Emas Index advanced 30.91 points to 11,180.80, the FBM Mid 70 Index gained 25.80 points to 12,001.52 and the FBM Ace earned 3.32 points to 4,299.68. Gainers led losers 103 to 63, with 138 counters unchanged, 1,327 untraded and 20 others were suspended. Turnover stood at 56.701 million shares worth RM38.751 million. Among the actives, Sumatec Resources rose 2.5 sen to 22.5 sen, Scomi Group and Ingenuity Solutions-Warrant increased half-a-sen each to 39.5 sen and seven sen, respectively. Among the heavyweights, Maybank added seven sen to RM9.13, Sime Darby fell one sen to RM9.79, CIMB earned six sen to RM7.62 and Axiata added two RM6.55.-- BERNAMA

Obama holds slight lead ahead of debate - CBS News Posted: 01 Oct 2012 08:11 AM PDT Five weeks before Election Day and two days before the first presidential debate, a set of new polls shows that President Obama has a slight two-point edge over Mitt Romney nationally. While both campaigns have tried to lower expectations for their respective candidate's debate performance, it's clear that conservatives expect Romney to use the debate to alter the campaign trajectory. The polls, meanwhile, show that there are also high expectations for Mr. Obama to perform well in the first debate. In a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, Mr. Obama leads Romney among likely voters nationally, 49 percent to 47 percent. The poll shows Mr. Obama with a more comfortable lead in swing states, where he leads among likely voters 52 percent to 41 percent. The Post poll gives Mr. Obama the advantage on nearly every major issue in the campaign, including taxes, social issues, women's issues, terrorism and ability to handle an "unexpected major crisis." On the critical issue of who voters trust to do a better job handling the economy, Mr. Obama and Romney are split at 47 percent for both. Another poll, conducted for Politico and George Washington University, also shows Mr. Obama leading Romney among likely voters nationally, 49 percent to 47 percent. Both the Politico and the Post surveys show Romney with a four-point lead among independents -- an edge that Romney will aim to build on Wednesday during the first presidential debate in Denver. The Washington Post poll shows that most voters, 56 percent, expect Mr. Obama to prevail Wednesday night. Those expectations may work in Romney's favor, who "doesn't have to hit a home run," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation." "But Romney has to be, at the end of the debate Wednesday night, a clear alternative who is considered as a potential President by a majority of the American people," Gingrich continued. On ABC's "This Week," former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour similarly said Romney has to offer a clear choice for voters. "He has to get them back focused on the reality of Obama's policies, the failures of those policies, and then offer them what he would do and why that would be better for their families, their communities, and our country," he said. "Pretty simple. It's not rocket science." The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza writes that Romney will have to step out of his comfort zone and go on offense against the president. "It's clear that Romney is behind Obama nationally and in key swing states -- not so far behind he can't come back, but behind nonetheless -- and therefore needs to be the instigator," he wrote. "That's not a role Romney has been comfortable with in past debates. His attempts to go after McCain during the 2008 Republican primary debates often flopped, and Romney seemed uncomfortable playing too much offense in the brief moment when Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) looked liked the 2012 front-runner." Mr. Obama, meanwhile, must work to keep in check his attitude so that he doesn't lose his advantage of appearing as a more "likable" candidate. "Obama is an experienced debater but an inconsistent performer who is years out of practice, capable of projecting a calm, commanding image -- or appearing bored, testy or condescending enough to snark out the unforgettable 'You're likeable enough, Hillary' crack four years ago," Politico's Glenn Thrush writes. "The debates didn't sink him in 2008 -- they were probably a net plus taken as a whole, his staffers believe -- but this time around Obama's bedrock political asset is his likeability and capacity to bond with middle-class voters. Hence the unwritten rule in debate prep sessions against Sen. John Kerry, Romney's stand-in: Hold your ground, but no more sneers." While both sides are already working to set expectations for the debate, it's unclear how much influence it can really have on the state of the race. In the Politico poll, 46 percent say they will definitely vote to re-elect Mr. Obama, 42 percent say firmly they are voting for Romney, and just 9 percent may consider changing their minds. "We've never had a debate where the electorate was this polarized," Democratic pollster Celinda Lake told Politico. "There's a real question about how many voters are left to move in the debate." The New York Times, meanwhile, notes, "History shows that candidates have different ways to score through presidential debates: the forceful put-down, the surprising show of skill, the opponent's fumble, superior post-debate tactics. But it also shows that to fundamentally alter the direction of a campaign, a candidate usually has to accomplish all of those things."

Brown vetoes Calif. domestic workers rights bill - CBS News Posted: 01 Oct 2012 07:34 AM PDT SACRAMENTO, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday announced that he had vetoed legislation that would have provided overtime pay, meal breaks and other labor protections to an estimated 200,000 caregivers, nannies and house cleaners in California. Brown called their work a "noble endeavor" and said they deserve fair pay and safe working conditions. But the Democratic governor said the bill "raises a number of unanswered questions," prompting him to reject the measure. It was among dozens of bills he acted on in the final hours before his midnight deadline to consider bills sent to him this fall by the Legislature. Advocates said the legislation, dubbed the Domestic Workers of Bill of Rights, is necessary to protect a primarily female, immigrant workforce from abuse. They were successful in persuading New York lawmakers to pass similar legislation in 2010. Among other things, the bill would have required that live-in workers be compensated if their rest period was interrupted during an eight-hour period and eased eligibility requirements for workers' compensation. The California Chamber of Commerce and other business interests opposed AB889. They argued that labor laws carve out an exception for domestic workers for a reason: providing meal breaks and uninterrupted rest periods for caretakers is impractical at best and dangerous at worst. It was unclear how the legislation by Assemblymen Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, and V. Manuel Perez, D-Coachella, would have been enforced and whether it would have extended to part-time workers such as baby sitters. It called for the Department of Industrial Relations to set regulations by January 2014. Brown outlined his own list of eight questions in a veto message. They include the effect of increased costs he said could burden the disabled and elderly and their families. He also suggested the additional cost could mean fewer jobs for domestic workers and strain state regulators trying to enforce the requirements. Moreover, he said, a drafting error would have cost the state more than $200 million annually because the bill would have applied to In-Home Supportive Service workers. "In the face of consequences both unknown and unintended, I find it more prudent to do the studies before considering an untested legal regime for those that work in our homes," Brown wrote. California has become a focal point in the national debate over domestic worker protections because of its size and large immigrant workforce. The bill has drawn some high-profile support, including a videotaped endorsement from comedian and "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler. Affin upgrades MBM Resources Posted: 30 Sep 2012 06:40 PM PDT Affin Investment Bank upgraded MBM Resources Bhd to "add" from "reduce" previously, with the same target price of RM3.60 a share, after the car components maker tied up with Hino Japan to assemble trucks in Malaysia. "This vertical expansion denotes potential margin expansion as MBM moves from its existing distribution margins of 2-4 percent to incorporate a 10-15 percent assembler margin composition," the research house said in a note on Monday. Coupled with good cost discipline and economies of scale, the Hino plant can potentially generate mid-teen margins, Affin added. MBM's share price has fallen 11.3 percent in the past two weeks, according to Reuters chart. "We believe there may be opportunities to accumulate," Affin said. Hiap Tech Venture's fair value cut Posted: 30 Sep 2012 06:46 PM PDT RHB Research cut its fair-value estimate for steel company Hiap Teck Venture Berhad to RM0.51 from RM0.58 to reflect weak demand for the company's products. RHB lowered its net profit forecast for Hiap Teck for the financial year 2013/2014 by 2 to 3 percent in a research note on Monday due to lower estimates for sales volumes in the company's manufacturing and trading divisions. At 9.23 am, Hiap Teck was down 0.99 percent at RM0.50 per share, while the benchmark KLSE composite index was down 0.02 percent at 1636.37. -- Reuters
