At 9.07 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 0.85 of-a-point higher at 1,785.42, after opening 0.11 of-a-point lower at 1,784.46. A dealer said bluechips were likely to remain in consolidation mode while small caps in the construction and oil and gas sector would highlight trading with keen rotational play. "On the chart, the benchmark FBM KLCI's next resistance will be at the all-time high of 1,826 while immediate support stays at 1,772," he said. On the scoreboard, the Plantation Index fell 12.08 points to 8,284.55 and the Industrial Index slipped 0.02 of a point to 3,017.87 but the Finance Index gained 1.17 points to 16,985.68. The FBM Emas Index firmed 5.05 points to 12,452.62, the FBM100 Index added 4.96 points to 12,187.41 and the FBM 70 Index earned 2.521 points to 14,339.58. Gainers outpaced losers 124 to 54, with 139 counters unchanged, 1,256 untraded and 11 others were suspended. Turnover totalled 80.08 million shares worth RM37.34 million. Among actives, Astral Supreme, Flonic and Luster Industries added half-a-sen each to 24 sen, 17.5 sen and 10 sen, respectively, AWC gained 1.5 sen to 29.5 sen while Nextnation Communication was unchanged at nine sen. Heavyweights, CIMB added three sen to RM7.99 while both Axiata and Sime Darby gained one sen each to RM6.91 and RM9.49, respectively. Credit: Reuters/Lucas Jackson By Bernard Vaughan NEW YORK | Mon Aug 12, 2013 11:28am EDT (Reuters) - In a stinging rebuke to the Bloomberg administration, a federal judge ruled on Monday that the New York City Police's "stop and frisk" crime-fighting tactics violate the constitutional rights of minorities, despite claims by the mayor and police commissioner that it has driven down rates of violent crime. U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled that the police adopted a policy of "indirect racial profiling" by targeting racially defined groups for stops, resulting in the disproportionate, discriminatory stopping of tens of thousands of blacks and Hispanics, and that the city's highest officials "turned a blind eye" toward this result, she said. "No one should live in fear of being stopped whenever he leaves his home to go about the activities of daily life," Scheindlin wrote in her opinion. Police personnel felt or were aware of pressure to increase the number of stops when Mayor Michael Bloomberg took office in 2002 and brought in Raymond Kelly to be NYPD Commissioner, the judge wrote. As a result, officers often frisked young minority men for weapons or searched their pockets for contraband before letting them go, in a violation of the Constitution's Fourth Amendment that protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, the judge said in a 195-page decision. A 2012 New York Civil Liberties Union report showed a sharp, steady increase in police stops over the course of Bloomberg's three terms in office - to 685,724 in 2011 from 160,851 stops in 2003, with about half of the 2011 stops resulting in physical searches. Bloomberg and Kelly countered that the practice has driven down violent crime and limited the number of illegal guns being carried on the streets on New York. Scheindlin's major decision follows an exhaustive nine-week trial that ended in May that pitted the NYPD's interest in keeping New York's crime rate down against black and Latino plaintiffs who felt discriminated against. Scheindlin presided over the trial without a jury. The NYPD did not immediately comment on the decision. As part of her ruling, Scheindlin ordered the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee compliance with other remedies she ordered. The other remedies include the NYPD adopting a written policy specifying circumstances where stops are authorized; adopt a trial program requiring the use of body-worn cameras in one precinct in each of the city's five boroughs; and to set up a community-based remedial process under a court-appointed facilitator. Condos collapse into sinkhole near Disney World - USA TODAY Posted: 12 Aug 2013 08:08 AM PDT Engineers on Monday were trying to determine the extent of the damage after luxury resort condominiums crumbled into a massive sinkhole a few miles from Disney World. Dozens of guests at the Summer Bay Resort in Clermont, Fla., had only 10 to 15 minutes to escape the cracking, collapsing building, the Orlando Sentinel reports. No injuries were reported, but many fleeing guests left behind all their belongings -- including medications. About 30% of the three-story structure had collapsed by early Monday, Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar said. "My heart sunk. I was sick to my stomach," resort president Paul Caldwell told the Sentinel after getting a call about 10:30 p.m. Sunday that the 15-year-old building full of guests was splintering. "No doubt there would've been injuries if they hadn't gotten the building evacuated." The sinkhole is about 50 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep. Firefighters went door-to-door of Building 104, a three-story building of garden-style units, to help guests escape. Security guard Richard Shanley told the Sentinel he ran through the building waking up guests. "While you are running by, pieces of the building are falling down behind you," he said. "So you just do what you can and get out. " He said guests were afraid that the building might cave in with people inside. "Kids were crying. They were saying, 'We don't want to get trapped here. Mommy, we're on vacation. We're here to have fun. This is not what we expected. We don't want to get trapped here,'" Shanley told the newspaper. The building houses 24 units and about 20 people were staying in it at the time, Cuellar said. The building was sheared nearly in half. Caldwell told the Sentinel the displaced guests were relocated to other buildings. An adjacent building was also evacuated and 16 people had to leave, Cuellar told the Sentinel. The American Red Cross was providing assistance at the scene. Sinkholes, common in Florida, are a function of soft limestone disintegrating from acidic rainwater. Development, heavy rains and removal of groundwater can accelerate the erosion. In March, a 50-foot deep sinkhole swallowed a home near Tampa. Jeffrey Bush, 37, was sleeping in that home at the time and was declared dead. Luis Perez, who was staying at a condo building near the sinking one, said he was in his room when the lights went off around 11:30 p.m. He said he was on his way to the front desk to report the outage when he saw firefighters and police outside. "I started walking toward where they were at and you could see the building leaning and you could see a big crack at the base of the building," said Perez, 54, of Berona, N.J. Calif. teen found safe, suspected abductor killed in Idaho wilderness, police say - Fox News Posted: 11 Aug 2013 09:07 AM PDT Missing California teen Hannah Anderson has been found safe in Idaho, while her suspected abductor James Lee DiMaggio has been killed, San Diego County Sheriff's officials say. San Diego Sheriff William D. Gore said San Diego sheriff's authorities have notified the teen's father that she was rescued. "He was very relieved and very excited and looking forward to being reunited with his daughter," Gore said.  Speaking by phone on Fox News' "Justice with Judge Jeanine" Saturday night, Brett Anderson further articulated his emotions, saying "I'm ecstatic that my daughter and I will soon be reunited. I'm saddened by what happened to my wife and son, and I'm worried about what my daughter has been put through." DiMaggio, 40, was killed by FBI tactical agents at the north end of Morehead Lake after a campsite was spotted from the air and an FBI hostage recovery team was sent to the site, according to Gore. According to Fox40.com, DiMaggio was killed around 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.  The FBI told the Associated Press it was sending a team to investigate what unfolded before, during and after the shooting roughly 40 miles from the tiny town of Cascade. FBI policy calls for an investigation whenever an agent fires a weapon. Authorities offered few details of the confrontation with DiMaggio Saturday night. Ada County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Andrea Dearden, who is helping the Valley County sheriff's department handle the case, said she didn't know whether DiMaggio had fired at any officers prior to his death.  Anderson has no apparent physical injuries, but she was taken to a hospital where crisis counselors, victim witness coordinators and health care providers are assisting her. "We will make sure she gets as much care as possible, physically and emotionally," said Andrea Dearden. A contingent of about 270 law enforcement officers from the FBI, the Valley and Ada County sheriffs' offices, Idaho State Police, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Border Patrol, aided by experts from federal land management and wildlife agencies, worked around the clock to figure out the best way to track DiMaggio and the teen in the roadless area. "No one really knows where an investigation like this will lead," said Mary Rook, special agent in charge of the FBI's Salt Lake City division. "In this case, our team faced a very challenging situation." DiMaggio is suspected of killing Hannah's mother, 44-year-old Christina Anderson, and her 8-year-old brother Ethan Anderson, whose bodies were found Sunday night in DiMaggio's burning house in California near the Mexico border. The discovery of the car came about two days after a horseback rider reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area. Dearden said the rider didn't realize the pair were being sought until he got home and recognized them in news reports. Investigators believe that after killing Christine and Ethan Anderson, DiMaggio set fire to his log cabin and detached garage and fled with Hannah Anderson in tow. As the week went on, the manhunt expanded to Washington, Nevada, British Columbia and Mexico's Baja California. As tips poured in from up and down the coast, police cautioned that with Amber Alerts issued in five states for the car, DiMaggio may abandon the car and leave it rigged with explosives. A friend of Hannah Anderson claimed the girl was "creeped out" by a crush the suspect had on her. The friend said DiMaggio explained that he didn't want the girls to think he was weird in an effort to defend himself after noticing he and the teen exchanged glances. She said he spoke while driving them home from a high school gymnastics meet a couple months ago. Authorities have said DiMaggio had an "unusual infatuation" with Hannah, although Brett Anderson, said he never saw any strange behavior. If he had, Anderson said, "we would have quashed that relationship in an instant." A neighbor also told Fox5SanDiego.com that Hannah was afraid of DiMaggio and did not want to be around him anymore, but 'she didn't know how to tell anyone.' DiMaggio, a telecommunications technician at The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, was planning to move to Texas and invited Christina Anderson and the children to his home last weekend to say goodbye, Christopher Saincome, Christina Anderson's father, told AP. It's unclear how Christina Anderson and her son Ethan were killed, though police believe the crime was planned. Two killed, 2-year-old kidnapped in Johnston, RI - Boston.com Posted: 11 Aug 2013 09:20 AM PDT By Gal Tziperman Lotan, Globe Correspondent A 22-year-old man kidnapped a 2-year-old boy after a double homicide in Johnston, R.I., this morning, according to an Amber alert from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Police are looking for Malcolm W. Crowell, whom they described as a black man, 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 145 pounds. Police say he kidnapped 2-year-old Isaih Perez from 3 Oaktree Drive in Johnston around 5:20 a.m. They did not release any details about the homicide. 4 bodies pulled from wreckage of Conn. plane crash - USA TODAY Posted: 10 Aug 2013 09:05 AM PDT Four bodies have been pulled from the site where a plane crashed into two Connecticut homes, fire officials said Saturday. Anthony Moscato of the East Haven Fire Department said the bodies of two people from the plane and two people in one of the homes were recovered overnight. The deputy chief says authorities now believe those were the only victims. Earlier officials had warned that as many as six people were feared dead. The small, twin-engine plane slammed into two homes near New Haven while attempting to land Friday morning. A family member identified two of the dead as former Microsoft executive Bill Henningsgaard and his teenage son, Maxwell, who were on the plane traveling to the East Coast to visit colleges. The family learned it was Bill Henningsgaard's plane through the tail number, Blair Henningsgaard, the city attorney in Astoria, Ore., and brother of Bill Henningsgaard told the Associated Press. Authorities previously said that two children in one of the homes hit were missing. They were ages 1 and 13. The Hartford Courant reported Saturday that officials confirmed the two children were among the dead. The other home was empty at the time of the plane crash, East Haven Fire Chief Douglas F. Jackson told the Courant. Bill Henningsgaard worked for Microsoft for 14 years and had been a vice president of sales for the Western United States, Australia and New Zealand. He lived in Medina, Wash., a Seattle suburb, with his wife, Susan Sullivan, and their three children. It wasn't the first time Henningsgaard had been in a plane crash. In April 2009, he and his 84-year-old mother — who couldn't swim — survived a crash into the Columbia River after their plane's engine died. Hunt for abducted teen centers on Idaho wilderness - USA TODAY Posted: 10 Aug 2013 08:29 AM PDT A massive search is underway in the remote Idaho backcountry for California murder suspect James DiMaggio and the 16-year-old he's believed to have kidnapped following the grisly murders of her mother and younger brother. More than 100 law enforcement officials are descending on a 320-square-mile area of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area, a mostly roadless, rugged, heavily wooded forest in central Idaho about 70 miles north of Boise where motorized vehicles are prohibited. Crews are searching the area by foot, horse and helicopter. More than 100 people are either working on the search or are on their way to help. Agencies working on the search include the Valley County and Ada Cuonty Sheriff's departments U.S Marshals Service, Homeland Security, FBI, Idaho Army National Guard and Idaho State Police. DiMaggio's Nissan Versa, covered with brush and missing its California license plates, was found about five miles from a trailhead into the area Friday morning. Authorities had suspected the car may have been booby-trapped, but no explosives were found in or around the vehicle by a Boise bomb squad. The discovery came about two days after a horseback rider reported seeing DiMaggio and teen Hannah Anderson hiking with backpacks. Idaho authorities say the rider didn't realize the pair were being sought until he got home and recognized them on news reports. San Diego Police say they believe DiMaggio, 40, kidnapped Hannah after killing her mother, Christinia Anderson, and her brother, Ethan, last weekend. Their bodies were found in DiMaggio's burning California home near the Mexican border Sunday. On Friday night, San Diego County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the remains found in the home matched the DNA of Ethan, 8. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area was named after the late Idaho senator who sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1976. At more than 2.3 million acres, its the second-largest protected wilderness area in the lower 48 states, coursing through mountain ranges, deep canyons and the middle fork of the Salmon River, a popular waterway for rafters and kayakers. DiMaggio, a friend of the Andersons, is an experienced outdoorsman, according to Hannah's father, Brett Anderson. ITV News' Africa Correspondent Rohit Kachroo reports: The teenagers had to be treated in hospital after the incident after sustaining injuries to their hands, faces and chests, although their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening. The pair, who both have Jewish roots, were in the final week of their trip to the east African island where they were volunteering as teachers. The British nationals were due to fly back to the UK this evening. The attack occured on the island of Zanzibar which is around 22 miles off the coast of Tanzania. South Miami man kills wife, posts photo of bloody body, then turns himself in to ... - MiamiHerald.com Posted: 09 Aug 2013 08:25 AM PDT Derek Medina's life was open to the world. On YouTube, the 31-year-old South Miami man posted scores of videos of himself enjoying sports. He authored six online books, with long-winded titles about spirituality, saving the world and hunting ghosts. Medina snapped photos of his arm tattoos, meals, boating trips and drinks poolside with his wife. But on Thursday, Medina shocked South Florida by making one last announcement on Facebook: that he had shot and killed his wife before posting a photo of her twisted, bloodied body lying on a linoleum floor. "I'm going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys. Miss you guys. Take care. Facebook people you'll see me in the news," Medina wrote in a Facebook post that remained public for hours Thursday evening before the site removed his profile page at the request of police. Even in a world accustomed to intimate details of people's lives plastered on social media, Medina's posts — which went viral — were shocking. Medina walked into the South Miami police station around noon Thursday, then spent the evening speaking with homicide detectives about what led up to the shooting death of his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, 26. Investigators, armed with a search warrant, began documenting the crime scene inside the couple's townhouse at 5555 SW 67th Ave., then charged Medina with first-degree murder late Thursday. Alfonso's 10-year-old daughter from a previous relationship was upstairs at the time of the killing, but was unharmed. Officers quickly escorted her out of the home, with a blanket wrapped around her, after finding Alfonso's body. Medina is likely to claim self-defense. His father, Derek Medina Sr., told reporters his son killed Alfonso only after she brandished a knife. In the younger Medina's Facebook post, he did not mention a knife, but wrote: "My wife was punching me and I'm not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did. Hope u understand me." But according to an arrest report, Medina admitted to investigators he got into an argument with Alfonso. The report said he went upstairs, fished his pistol from a closet and pointed it at Alfonso. Alfonso yelled she was "leaving him," according to the report by Detective Jonathan Grossman. Then, Medina — still brandishing the weapon — followed her downstairs to the kitchen, where she grabbed a knife. Medina said he disarmed Alfonso, put the knife in the drawer, then shot her several times after she began punching and kicking him, the report said. The photo Medina posted on Facebook shows Alfonso, wearing all black and pink socks, on her knees, twisted backward in a bloody heap. Alfonso's former boss at a West Miami-Dade Denny's told the Miami Herald that the husband was extremely jealous and had hit Alfonso in the past. "She would be bruised up," said Amada Cooper, who described Medina as a controlling husband who tried to force her to quit her job as a server because he didn't want her working nights. After several violent episodes, another co-worker implored Alfonso to leave him. "He would always come back, begging her … come back," said Cathy LaBella. "She would say he was going to change. She was in love with him." Medina and Alfonso initially married in early 2010 after dating only a few months. The marriage was stormy and friends said he would often kick her out. The two always got back together, however.

3 winners in 2 states hit $448M Powerball jackpot - Chicago Tribune Posted: 08 Aug 2013 08:31 AM PDT Three tickets matched all six numbers in Wednesday's Powerball lottery drawing and will split a $448 million jackpot, authorities said on Thursday. The Multi-State Lottery Association said two of the winning tickets were sold in New Jersey, while the third was in Minnesota. The numbers drawn on Wednesday night were 5, 25, 30, 58, 59 and Powerball 32. No one had stepped forward as of early Thursday morning to claim their share of the jackpot. The New Jersey tickets were sold at a Super Stop & Shop supermarket in South Brunswick and an Acme Markets store in Little Egg Harbor, said Judith Drucker, spokeswoman for the New Jersey Lottery. "It's nice. It's good for whoever won," said Stop & Shop store manager Howard Witzgall, noting the winner's identity remained a mystery. The Minnesota ticket was purchased at a store in Anoka County, which includes the northern part of Minneapolis-St.Paul, according to the Minnesota State Lottery. Lottery officials there will not know which retailer sold the ticket until the winning prize is claimed. Powerball officials had said the jackpot stood at about $425 million on Wednesday afternoon but swelled to $448 million by the time of the nationally televised drawing at 11 p.m. EDT. The odds of winning the jackpot were about one in 175 million. The largest jackpot in history stands at $656 million, won in the Mega Millions lottery in March 2012. That prize was split among winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois. The biggest single-winner Powerball jackpot, $590.5 million, was claimed in June by an 84-year-old Florida woman who opted for a lump-sum payment of nearly $371 million rather than the 30-year option. Powerball tickets are sold in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The suspect has been identified as Erbie Bowser, who identifies himself on his Facebook page as a former Dallas Mavericks dancer, CBS Dallas station KTVT-TV reports. Bowser was arrested at the second crime scene in DeSoto, Texas, outside Dallas. Charges against the suspect are still pending. Family members said that Bowser was looking for his ex-girlfriend at both of the houses. The first shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. at a Dallas home. Two people there were shot and killed, and two more people were wounded, Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell told media outlets. The gunman then moved about 7 miles to another home in DeSoto, Mitchell said. There, at around 10:45 p.m., he tossed what police believe may be some type of explosive device into the home, police told KTVT-TV, before opening fire again. At a Thursday morning press conference, DeSoto police said they couldn't confirm what the device was pending an investigation by the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In the DeSoto house, another two people were killed and two others wounded, DeSoto police Cpl. Melissa Franks said Neighbors of the DeSoto home described the loud boom from the explosive device. "We thought it was coming from upstairs because the kids are always upstairs making noise," said Tommy Johnson. "I went up and asked, 'Did y'all hear anything?' and one of my daughters said it came from outside, so I peeped out the front, and that's when I saw a bunch of officers walking down the sidewalk about 10 houses up." Franks said police took Bowser into custody without incident at the house where the second shooting occurred. She said no charges had been filed yet. Victims that survived the Dallas shooting were taken to Parkland Hospital and Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Their current conditions are not known. The conditions of the two surviving DeSoto victims - an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy - are also not known. They were transported to Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

Obama cancels upcoming meeting with Putin - Washington Post Posted: 07 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT President Obama will cancel a planned meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid mounting anger over Russia's decision to allow National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden into the country, the White House said Wednesday. Obama had intended to visit Russia's capital and meet with Putin in advance of next month's G-20 summit in St. Petersburg. But he has decided he will not meet with Putin one-on-one — a rare diplomatic snub — and will only attend the G-20 summit. "Following a careful review begun in July, we have reached the conclusion that there is not enough recent progress in our bilateral agenda with Russia to hold a U.S.-Russia Summit in early September," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. Carney cited a "lack of progress" with Russia over the past 12 months on a broad range of issues including missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security and human rights and civil society issues. Carney added that Russia's "disappointing decision" to grant Snowden temporary asylum was also a factor. "We have informed the Russian Government that we believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda," Carney said. On Friday, Secretary of State John F. Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will meet with their Russian counterparts in Washington to discuss how to make progress, Carney said. Instead of visiting Moscow ahead of the G-20 summit, Obama will travel to Stockholm on Sept. 4. "Sweden is a close friend and partner to the United States," Carney said in a statement. "Sweden plays a key leadership role on the international stage, including in opening new trade and investment opportunities through the U.S.-EU Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, advancing clean technologies, and promoting environmental sustainability." The cancellation of the Obama-Putin meeting appeared unlikely to provoke an outsize reaction in Russia. Although Putin clearly wanted the prestige of an at-home summit with his U.S. counterpart, he was apparently unwilling to offer much in exchange for it. Russia has shown no signs of changing its stance on Syria, missile defense or other issues important to the United States.. Putin's foreign affairs adviser told reporters that the Kremlin was disappointed with the decision and blamed it on the Snowden affair, which he said was not Russia's fault. "It is clear that this decision is related to a situation with the former employee of the U.S. special services, Snowden, which we did not create," Yuri Ushakov said. He said the invitation to Obama remained open and criticized the United States for lack of interest in developing good relations. "This problem testifies to the remaining unpreparedness of the United States to build an equal relationship," he said, adding, "Russia is ready to continue working with its U.S. partners on all key items on the bilateral and multilateral agendas." While the Snowden affair was a very public irritant for the United States, some observers said broader underlying disagreements provided a more powerful argument against Obama's visit. At a roundtable discussion in Moscow at the beginning of the week, Russian analysts conceded the countries had few areas of agreement, Snowden aside. "Mutual interest is minimal, and it is rather difficult to build relations on this basis," said Andrei Sidorov, assistant to the dean of the Moscow State University World Politics Department On Wednesday, a lawmaker said calling off the summit was of minimal concern to Russia. "Russia will not lose anything because of this," Mikhail Yemelyanov told the Interfax news service. "America needs Russia more than Russia needs America." For weeks, the White House had signaled it was considering canceling the Putin meeting. On Tuesday, Obama told Jay Leno of "The Tonight Show" that he was frustrated by Russia's protection of Snowden, but that the two countries must work together. "I was disappointed," Obama said of Russia's decision. "Even though we don't have an extradition treaty with them, traditionally we have tried to respect if there's a lawbreaker or alleged lawbreaker in their country, we evaluate it, and we try to work with them." He added: "There are times when they slip back into Cold War thinking and Cold War mentality. What I continually say to them and to President Putin — that's the past." Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), who on Sunday urged Obama to cancel his bilateral meeting with Putin and to recommend moving the G-20 summit to a different country, said in a statement Wednesday that Obama "clearly made the right decision." "President Putin is acting like a school-yard bully and doesn't deserve the respect a bilateral summit would have accorded him," Schumer said. A Washington Post-ABC News poll last month found that a majority of Americans, 56 percent, opposed Obama canceling his entire visit if Russia helped Snowden avoid facing charges in the United States, while 37 percent said he should. Americans have become more supportive of a Snowden prosecution since he arrived at the Moscow airport. In mid-June, 43 percent backed charging Snowden with a crime for disclosing U.S. intelligence-gathering efforts, but that grew to 53 percent last month. Ariel Castro's house of horror leveled in Cleveland - USA TODAY Posted: 07 Aug 2013 09:24 AM PDT CLEVELAND — Demolition crews leveled Ariel Castro's former house of horror Wednesday not long after one of three young women held captive there for 11 years brought a bundle of yellow balloons in memory of other missing children. Cheers erupted on Seymour Avenue as the heavy equipment clawed away part of the roof and walls of the rundown house where Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued after years of living in chains. Crews reduced the two-story house to rubble in a little more than an hour. The demolition was carried live online and also drew crowds of neighbors and onlookers. Castro, 53, pleaded guilty last month to 937 charges including rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder charges in connection with the abduction of the three young women, who were rescued May 6. She says the yellow balloons represented those still out there waiting to be found. The demolition of the house comes less than a week after Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years. Over the last few days, Castro's family members have taken personal items from the home. DeJesus was 14 when she disappeared, Berry was 16, and Knight was 21. They were rescued after Berry broke free from her room and began shouting from the door, alerting neighbors. Joseph Frolik with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office said officials decided to tear down the house because "we didn't want some kind of gruesome, macabre shrine, if you will, that would get gawkers and curiosity seekers." Prosecutor Tim McGinty "wanted the property to come down and to come down quickly," Frolik said. The house is being demolished at no cost by two local companies who expect to complete their work by the end of this week. Cuyahoga County Land Bank obtained the deed to the house last week. In addition, the county is working to get the deeds to two homes adjacent to Castro's.
