Danvers High School teacher's death in Massachusetts leads to charge against ... - CBS News

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 09:28 AM PDT

Updated at 12:14 p.m. ET

DANVERS, Mass. A 14-year-old high school student was accused of killing a math teacher whose body was found in the woods behind the school.

The body of Colleen Ritzer, 24, of Andover, was found in a wooded area near Danvers High School early Wednesday, and the boy will be arraigned on a murder charge, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said during a Wednesday morning news conference.

"We have no reason to believe that any other suspects are involved," Blodgett told reporters.

Police started investigating after Ritzer was reported missing late Tuesday night because she had not returned home from work and was not answering her cell phone. Investigators found blood in a second-floor school bathroom and soon located the victim, he said. He did not say how Ritzer died.

"She was a very, very respected, loved teacher," Blodgett said, calling the killing a "terrible tragedy."

"I just remember seeing her in the hallway and she always had a smile, like 'hi' to everyone, and she was just an amazing person," Megan Papagelis, a Danvers High graduate, told CBS Boston station WBZ-AM.

"It's just shocking to see that this could happen," Papagelis told WBZ-AM. "Unbelievable."

The boy also was reported missing Tuesday after not coming home from school. He was spotted walking along a road in neighboring Topsfield at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

His name was not made public because of his age. He faces arraignment Wednesday in juvenile court, where proceedings are closed to the public.

Ritzer had a Twitter account where she gave homework assignments, encouraged students and described herself as a "math teacher often too excited about the topics I'm teaching."

All Danvers public schools were closed Wednesday.

Ritzer is the second teacher allegedly killed by a student in the U.S. this week. A Sparks, Nev., middle school teacher was allegedly shot by a 12-year-old student on Monday.

Secret White House Tweeter Loses Anonymity, and Job - New York Times

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 08:59 AM PDT

WASHINGTON — A White House insider in the thick of negotiations over nuclear issues with Iran was fired after he was exposed as the voice of a Twitter feed that over more than two years knocked public figures and colleagues, a White House official confirmed late Tuesday.

Jofi Joseph, formerly the director of nuclear nonproliferation issues on the National Security Council staff at the White House, was @NatSecWonk, who took anonymous and often caustic digs at people like former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Ben Rhodes, the N.S.C. spokesman; and Representative Darrell R. Issa, Republican of California and a nemesis of the administration as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Administration officials said Mr. Joseph was fired last week after he was unmasked as the Twitter account's author. The White House official e-mailed to confirm "he no longer works at the White House. Beyond that not going to get into personnel matters."

The firing was first disclosed by the Web site Daily Beast and its reporter Josh Rogin, who was one of the subjects of Mr. Joseph's tweets.

"Just a hunch, but I have the sense lots of people would like to punch @joshrogin in the face," Mr. Joseph wrote on the social-networking site after news reports that Mr. Rogin had been hit by a comedian at a Washington club.

Mr. Joseph was generally respected and popular within the White House, so his secret life took colleagues by surprise. On @NatSecWonk, which has now disappeared, he called himself a "keen observer of the foreign policy and national security scene" who "unapologetically says what everyone else only thinks."

In that self-described spirit, Mr. Joseph made Mrs. Clinton a particular target. As secretary of state in President Obama's first term, she "had few policy goals and no wins," he wrote. And he called Mr. Issa "an ass," then added, "but he's on to something here with the @HillaryClinton whitewash of accountability for Benghazi," referring to the terrorist killings in that Libyan city of four Americans, including the ambassador, last year.

Mr. Joseph apologized in remarks to Politico, the politics Web site.

"What started out as an intended parody account of DC culture developed over time into a series of inappropriate and meanspirited comments," he told the site. "I bear complete responsibility for this affair and I sincerely apologize to everyone I insulted."

SapuraKencana stock surges 5.4pc

Posted: 22 Oct 2013 07:17 PM PDT

Shares in SapuraKencana Bhd jumped more than five per cent on Wednesday after the Malaysian oilfield service provider agreed to pay US$898 million to buy Newfield Exploration Co's Malaysian oil and gas assets.

By 9.07am in Kuala Lumpur, SapuraKencana shares were up 5.4 per cent at RM4.30 per share, outperforming the broader market's 0.2 per cent rise, as investors cheered the company's maiden expansion into the business of owning and operating fields.

"In essence we are acquiring a proven oil and gas operator with a balanced portfolio of producing and discovered fields and exploration assets in peninsula Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak," SapuraKencana chief executive officer, Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin, said in a statement.

The sale signals an aggressive diversification strategy, making the firm Malaysia's fourth-largest producer after oil majors like Shell and Exxon-Mobil.

"As a field owner and operator, this business will require different set of operating principles and as such we will manage this new business division separately as an independent subsidiary," he said.

SapuraKencana will hold interests in nine production-sharing blocks offshore Malaysia, giving the company an opportunity to learn the business and look at ways to boost the productivity of the fields - some of which are in natural decline.

The deal is subject to approval from state oil firm and industry regulator Petronas, which is in charge of awarding all production-sharing blocks in the country and has been tasked with boosting the production of marginal and depleted fields.-- Reuters

Nevada school shooting victim was 'trained to help' - USA TODAY

Posted: 22 Oct 2013 08:29 AM PDT

The day after Sparks Middle School shooting which left two dead, including the shooter and two wounded, the focus has turned to the man who died protecting his students. (USA TODAY, USA NOW)

Martha Bellisle, Reno Gazette-Journal 11:49 a.m. EDT October 22, 2013

SPARKS, Nev. -- It came as no surprise to Michael Landsberry's family that the Sparks Middle School math teacher was being called a hero for trying to convince a student to put his gun down moments before Lansberry was killed.

The shooting rampage Monday also left two students wounded. The shooter then fatally shot himself.

"To hear he was trying to protect those kids, that he stepped up and tried to stop the situation, doesn't surprise me at all," said Chanda Landsberry, who is married to Michael's younger brother, Reggie. "He could have ducked and hid, but he didn't. That's not who he is."

"He was trained to help."

Lansberry, a member of the Nevada Air National Guard, leaves behind his wife and two stepdaughters.

Tom Robinson, deputy chief with the Reno Police Department, said that "in my estimation, he is a hero. We do know he was trying to intervene."

Student Jose Cazares said he was hanging out with friends when they heard what they thought were firecrackers. He said he saw a boy shoot two students. He said the boy then aimed the gun at his chest, but Landsberry stepped between him and the shooter.

"He was telling him to stop and put the gun down. Then the kid, he yelled out 'No!' Like, he was yelling at him, and he shot him," Jose told NBC's Today show Tuesday. "He (Landsberry) was calm, he was holding out his hand like, 'put the gun in my hand.'"

Cazares said the shooter later threatened to shoot them if they identified him to authorities, then moved on.

Landsberry "sacrificed his life to take our kids into safety," Marisela Cazares told Today. ''I thank him for that. He's a true hero."

Chanda Landsberry said her brother-in-law, who received bachelor's degree in education from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2001, loved teaching.

"He loved his school kids. He loved the Guard," she said. "It defined him."

His students shared the pain of his loss in an outpouring of heartfelt messages on social media, and shared photos of their teacher, showing his playfulness in the classroom.

Landsberry kept a math website to help his students get through each year called "Welcome to Mr. L's Math Class for 2013-2014."

"I have one classroom rule and it is very simple: 'Thou Shall Not Annoy Mr. L,'" the site said. "I am looking forward to getting to know and teach all of you this year. I know that at times the year will be tough and boring but I will do my best to make the lessons exciting."

Some of his students said Landsberry loved Batman so much that many used the title as his nickname.

One student wrote on Twitter "you'll always be known as everyone's Batman, you're a hero. RIP Mr. Landsberry." Another wrote: "Batman flew up with the angels."

Others created a community Facebook page called "Rest Easy Mr. Landsberry." The statement on the site says: "Best Teacher There Was. Our 'Batman' A Father, Husband, Best Friend, Veteran, Coach. He's In A Better Place Now. Gone But Never Forgotten.'Thou Shall Not Annoy Mr. L'."

The 2012 Winter addition of Battle Born, published by the Nevada National Guard lists Technical Sgt Michael Landsberry as being part of the 152nd Logistics Readiness Squadron.

The publication and two others state that he served overseas.

On Monday, he died outside his classroom trying to stop a boy with a gun.

Obama: Health care website problems unacceptable - USA TODAY

Posted: 21 Oct 2013 08:49 AM PDT

David Jackson, USA TODAY 11:47 a.m. EDT October 21, 2013

President Obama said Monday that problems with the new health care website are inexcusable, but argued that the law overall will benefit millions of Americans.

While Healthcare.gov "hasn't worked as as smooth as it was supposed to have worked," Obama said in a White House speech that thousands of once-uninsured Americans have signed up for coverage.

Obama said his health care team will reach out to tech experts to fix massive website problems that have hampered the rollout of his landmark piece of legislation, the Affordable Care Act.

"Nobody's more frustrated by that than I am," Obama said. "There's no excuse for the problems."

Aside from the website, Obama said the new health care law is providing consumer protections and benefits for millions of Americans, including mammograms and birth control services.

"The essence of the law ... is working just fine," Obama said.

In a blog post, the Department of Health and Human Services said some users of HealthCare.gov "have had trouble creating accounts and logging in to the site, while others have received confusing error messages, or had to wait for slow page loads or forms that failed to respond in a timely fashion."

As a result, HHS said it is "bringing in some of the best and brightest from both inside and outside government to scrub in with the team and help improve HealthCare.gov."

The administration did not provide specific names of experts.

For his speech in the Rose Garden, the president was joined by consumers, small business owners and pharmacists who, the White House said, "have either benefited from the health care law already or are helping consumers learn about what the law means for them and how they can get covered."

Obama's guests also included "individuals who have already applied for and enrolled in quality, affordable coverage through the marketplaces and those who are planning to after exploring and comparing their new health care options," the White House said.

Congressional Republicans who opposed the 2010 health care law said the initial problems call the entire program into question.

Citing reports that few people have signed up for health care exchanges, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that "another campaign-style event won't solve the myriad problems facing consumers under Obamacare."

McConnell said that "for months, the American people have been learning about the impact Obamacare will have on individuals and families in the form of higher premiums, disrupted insurance and lost jobs -- more broken promises from the administration."

Who are the parents of the blond girl in the Gypsy camp? - CBS News

Posted: 21 Oct 2013 06:09 AM PDT

(CBS News) Authorities in Greece are making an international appeal as they try to identify a young girl found in a raid at a Gypsy camp last week. They fear she could be the victim of child trafficking.

The girl answers to the name of Maria, is thought to be 4 years old, and is now being cared for by social services in Greece.

It was the girl's looks that were the first clue. She has blond hair and blue eyes, which alerted an official that she did not belong. She did not have the typical Gypsy dark hair and dark eyes.

The little girl was spotted in a Gypsy community in the central Greek region of Larissa when police arrived to investigate another issue.

Greek Gypsies fear backlash after blond girl found in camp

DNA tests proved the girl did not come from the same family as the one she was living with and members of the group are now arguing the child had been "given" to the family for care and that she had been treated well.

Others have taken a dimmer view and believed that she was stolen for resale, or perhaps that she had some other value, such as a blonde child is good for street begging.

A family home video shown to reporters apparently confirms the child has been with the group for some time. In the video she appears to be about 2-years-old.

A charity has published a poster image of the girl and says it's received thousands of calls from around the world, including four calls it called "promising" from the United States.

Blond, blue-eyed girl in Greek Gypsy camp sparks child trafficking worries

"It shows that it could be kidnapping and combined effort of these people to buy and sell children, and when you have a good commodity like this one, they try to find a better price," said Kostas Yannopoulos, President of Smile of the Child.

A man and a woman were arrested and taken from the Gypsy community. They are appearing in court today charged with abducting a minor.

Their lawyer, Kostas Katsavos, said they will offer a defense.

"Our clients' claim is that 'we never abducted this child, we just adopted', in a way non-legal," said Katsavos.

A lot happens in Gypsy communities that is off the books, but this case has raised the hopes of a lot of families of children who have disappeared. One may be lucky, but for the others it may simply open some terrible wounds.
