"Michael Ballack will no longer be a part of the German national squad," the DfB said in a statement. "I have discussed things openly with Michael Ballack, most recently in our meeting in March 2011 and in numerous phone calls," coach Joachim Loew said. The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich midfielder, 34, has not played for Germany since March 2010, and in terms of performance at least, his absence has not been felt. CENTENNIAL JOY Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:25 AM PDT CENTENNIAL JOY 2011/06/15 By Jassmine Shadiqe One of Johor's oldest Hindu temples, the Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam, celebrated its 100th anniversary recently The temple was officially reopened to the public and devotees on Sunday after undergoing a major renovation that cost RM2.5 million. More than 20,000 devotees including tourists from Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand and Australia were at the temple as early as 7am. Among the temple's main attraction is its five-tiered, 22-metre high rajagopuram (deep vertical fissures that is built on the main tower). It is the tallest rajagopuram in Johor. The statues in the temple are sculpted from a single granite stone and they also have the Goddess Periyachi, who is an aspect of the Divine Mother known as Amman. The Goddess, who is also known as Periyachi Amman, is the protector of children. Families offer special prayers to Periyachi Amman after the birth of a baby. From its humble beginnings in 1911, the temple is now one of the major landmarks in the state. The temple was built after the former Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar gave the temple founder, Kootha Reumal Vandayar, an acre of land in Jalan Ungku Puan and RM500 to build it. The temple's first consecration ceremony or maha kumbabishegam took place on Dec 8, 1911. In 1949, the temple was registered under the Society Ordinance as Rajamariamman Kovil. Along the years, several refurbishments including replacing the pandaram or priests who perform the poojas and weddings. No major renovations were made to the temple for the next 51 years. However, in 1977 a decision was made to rebuild the temple. Renovation works started in 1979 and it took six years to rebuilt the temple and its name was changed to Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam. Statues of deities such as Sri Rukyumani and Sri Vairan were incorporated as well as the rajagopuram and a kodi maram (flag staff). Several kumbabishegam and maha kumbabishegam were done. Kumbabishegam has to be performed for temples once in 12 years, where holy water is sprinkled on the tower and shrines in the temple. Kumbabishegam recharges the spiritual energy in the temple. The benefit of witnessing a kumbabishegam is enormous. "Most of the priests who are here today had performed over 1,000 kumbabishegam, but this is the first time they are conducting the prayers on a temple's anniversary," said Venugopal. Ex-soldier shares his service memories Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:27 AM PDT Ex-soldier shares his service memories 2011/06/16 by Sinnasamy Narayanasamy I LIVE in Taman Universiti, Skudai, but I was born and grew up in Chenderiang, Perak. My primary education began during the Japanese occupation in 1940, in a government English school in Tapah. I rode the bus to school daily. One day, Japanese soldiers bombed the Tapah bridge and damaged the road. I was nearby when one of them on a bicycle had a tyre puncture. When he saw I had a bicycle, he took it and cycled away. I told my father about it and he immediately took our family to hide in an estate not far from our home where we lived in a shed for a few weeks. When the situation had calmed down, we returned home. My father continued to run his toddy shop, but my school in Tapah had closed, so my father enrolled me into a Malay school in Chenderiang where I learned Jawi, Malay, and Japanese until 1945. It was an explosive period in history. My family had heard stories of a famous soldier, Subash Chandra Bose, from the Indian Army, who had recruited young Indian men and women for training in Thailand to fight British soldiers. Meanwhile, some British soldiers, who were hiding in the jungle were training the communists to aggravate the Japanese soldiers. I was too young at the time to understand what was happening, the realisation came much later. In 1952, after I finished my Standard 8 Junior Cambridge, an officer in my neighbourhood's resettlement scheme encouraged me to be a P.S.I. (Permanent Staff Instructor) in the Home Guard. I was sent for training at the Ipoh headquarters of the Home Guard in the Tambun Camp. After a month's training, I came back to Chenderiang to form a special squad for operational purposes. During my tenure there, the special squad killed three bandits. I was later recommended to join the first Federation Regiment, a multi-racial regiment in Taiping. I went for the interview and passed the tests. By that time, I had obtained a certificate for my services, and the assistant State Home Guard officer in Batang Padang, C. E. Parker, told me that I would have better prospects in a newly-formed army battalion. My pay was at the time was 50 dollars a month. I enlisted into the Army on Sept 17, 1953, as a training recruit for six months. After training, I was promoted to the rank of lance corporal and the pay was 60 dollars per month. I went for another two months of training in jungle warfare and survivor skills. After the training, I was posted to "C" company in Taiping. The company's jurisdiction covered the jungles of Sungai Siput and Kroh in Perak, Kepala Batas in Penang, and Kulim, Gurun, Sungai Petani and Kuala Nerang in Kedah. While I was in Kroh, the company was asked to escort former Communist Party of Malaya secretary-general, Chin Peng and his deputy Rashid Mydin from the jungles of Klian Intan to attend the talks with Tunku Abdul Rahman in Baling, Kedah in 1955. I remember Chin Peng had assured Tunku Abdul Rahman that there would be a truce until the talks were over at the school in Baling. After the historic talks, we escorted Chin Peng and Rashid back to the spot where we had fetched them earlier -- by a road beside the jungle. Later, "C" company was posted to Bukit Serampang, Tangkak, for operational duties. It was moved to a new camp in Sungai Udang, Malacca after that. Three years after, I served in the First Malayan Special Forces, which was sent for peacekeeping missions in the Congo and other African nations. I left the army with the rank of warrant officer in 1971, and later worked in the Singapore civil service, before retiring in 1987. Upon retirement, I received about S$200,000 (RM250,000 at that time) from the island republic's Central Provident Fund, which I used to buy my family house in Taman Universiti, Skudai. Looking back, I realised that it did not matter how much the Home Guard and army were paying me. My comrades and I served with dignity, integrity, and loyalty because it was our duty. We shared the benefits as a team, and suffered together in the thick jungles of Kedah, Perak and Johor. I am now 79 years old. I have difficulty walking as the result of a stroke. It is hard to make ends meet on a monthly welfare allowance of RM200. My wife is also sickly and my son has to care for his own family. Sinnasamy Narayanasamy, 79, is a former warrant officer who served in the Home Guard during the Malayan Emergency. There were 3 agreements signed by Shamsuddin when he purchased the properties for RM6.5 mil in 2004 before selling it to former Selangor MB Dr Mohd Khir Toyo for RM3.5 mil in 2007. Two S&P for the properties were for RM5mil, and a supplementary for fixtures and fittings for RM1.5mil. Shamsuddin also admitted there were only two resolutions passed to purchase the properties, and not for the supplementary agreement. The resolutions to purchase the properties were passed on Jan 5, 2005. Shamsuddin, however, had signed the two S&P to purchase the properties on Dec 23, 2004. In a statement here today, BNM said the intended victims would receive emails purportedly from the bank informing them that it was now collecting personal banking information to update its database. "They will be prompted to either click on a link or reply to the email directly. "Once the person clicks on the link, they would then be directed to a fake website requesting disclosure of personal financial details such as credit or debit cards details including card code verification or other personal identification numbers. "The public must ignore those emails and refrain from giving personal banking information to anyone under any circumstances," it said. The central bank said financial institutions, including credit card issuers, banking institutions as well as BNM itself, would never request for personal banking information when contacting customers, be it via telephone calls, short message services (SMS) or emails. It said the public must use web browsers that were up-to-date with built-in phishing filters. "They must not trust emails, calls or SMS claiming cash wins or refunds and requesting for personal banking information and contact the respective banks or the Association of Banks in Malaysia's toll-free service, ABMConnect, at 1-300-88-9980 when in doubt of the email, SMS or calls, " it said. Hackers disrupt 41 government websites Posted: 15 Jun 2011 07:51 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: At least 41 Malaysian government websites were hacked into overnight but no personal or financial data were compromised, government officials said today, as the Southeast nation becomes the latest target of a cyberwar waged by the activists. In the attacks, 51 websites were hit and at least 41 of these sites were disrupted, industry regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said. The attacks, which began shortly before midnight on Wednesday, follow a warning by Internet vigilante group Anonymous, which said it would attack the government's official portal to punish it for censoring WikiLeaks, the website that aims to expose governments and corporations by leaking secret documents. "Our monitoring of the situation showed that there was a reduced level of attacks by 4.00 a.m. this morning and upon further evaluation, so far, we gauge that there has been little impact on Malaysian users as a result," the communications commission said in a statement. It did not name the sites which were attacked but targets included the government's online portal, and the webpages of the fire and emergency services department and the land public transport commission. Malaysian police chief Ismail Omar told Reuters no personal or financial data had so far been stolen but the authorities were trying to determine the extent of the attacks. It was not immediately clear if the attacks were launched by Anonymous or other hackers. Anonymous is a grouping of global activists lobbying for Internet freedom who frequently try to shut down the websites of businesses and other organisations that they oppose. The activists gained prominence when they temporarily crippled the websites of MasterCard and Paypal that cut off financial services to WikiLeaks. A spate of cyber attacks on multinational firms and institutions, from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency to Citigroup to the International Monetary Fund, has raised concerns that governments and the private sector may struggle to defend themselves against hackers. In an earlier Internet posting, Anonymous said Malaysia's censorship of films and television shows and its blocking of file-sharing websites amounted to a denial of human rights. The communication commission last week banned 10 file-sharing sites and ordered Internet service providers such as Telekom Malaysia and Maxis to block access. The restrictions have outraged ordinary Malaysians, and several people took to Twitter on Thursday to express support for the cyber attacks. "Now to count how many sites have gotten whacked so far," said a tweet posted by Rhyden. "I knew the government's IT defence team was pathetic." The Southeast Asian country has a vibrant Internet culture that has gained a mass following in an environment where the mainstream media is tightly controlled. BN has now won three of the four of by-elections this year, losing Sibu by 398 votes. In Kelantan, BN wrested the Galas State seat from Pas by a majority of 1,190 - improving its near-victory in the July 2009 Manik Urai by-election when the coalition lost by 65 votes. BN shall now look to repeat the kind of performance it produced in the 2004 general election when it won 21 state seats in Kelantan. As for now, Galas brings its state seats to 7 in a 45-seat Legislative Assembly. The Galas by-election was called following the death of Pas' Che Hashim Sulaima, 46, on Sept 27 from colon cancer. Che Sulaima had defeated BN's Mohd Saufi Deraman by a 646 vote-majority in the March 2008 general election. In the 2004 general election, Che Hashim had lost to Mohamad Saufi, by 1,729 votes. Significantly for Kelantan politics, the Galas battle had been billed as contest between BN's Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the Kelantan Menteri Besar and Pas spiritual leader. Analysts had said that a Pas defeat would be seen as a sign of Nik Aziz losing grip. He is 79 and had been Menteri Besar since 1990. "The face to face interaction adopted by BN has worked..this is a indicator of how BN can change," Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia told the New Straits Times tonight. In Batu Sapi, the choice of a woman as a candidate and the joint-leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan of Parti Bersatu Sabah had contributed to the increase of majority from 3,708 (2008 general election) to 6,359, analysts said. "My husband is watching me now and I think he is proud of me," said the BN candidate, Datin Linda Tsen Thau Lin. Tsen's husband Datuk Edmund Chong was the late parliamentarian of Batu Sapi. He was acclaimed the 'World's Best CAT Graduate' in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme. The results were announced in October. The 19-year-old Faculty of Accountancy student scored the highest aggregate of 474 marks or an average of almost 95 per cent, for five advanced CAT papers. CAT is an international qualification offered by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountants headquartered in the United Kingdom. The qualification provides the graduate with the necessary knowledge and skills in Finance and Accounting to perform an accounting-support role. It is also designed to fast-track students towards a full-fledged career in accountancy. Khalid achieved a perfect score in Drafting Financial Statements (T6) and came close in Managing People and Systems (T5) with 98 per cent. His marks in these two papers were the highest in the world. He also posted 97 per cent for Planning - Control and Performance Management (T7), 90 per cent for Preparing Taxation Computations (T9) and 89 per cent for Managing Finances (T10). "It was important for me to shine in this programme as it has placed me on the right path to achieving my dreams so I can help my less fortunate family," said Khalid in an interview with Varsity Voice on Nov 21. Although he expected to pass the CAT exams with flying colours, the outstanding results were "...a dream come true, and a tribute to my love for mathematics and numbers". The third son in a family of nine siblings from Hulu Langat, Selangor, Khalid has now set his sights on completing another 11 courses in the ACCA programme to become a chartered certified accountant. "CAT is only the first step. I intend to do just as well in the ACCA examination before gaining work experience and eventually opening up my own accountancy practice."
