Student missing after going to school Posted: 29 Oct 2011 10:02 PM PDT PADANG SERAI: A Form Two student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lunas here, Nur Ainina Adila Muhd Zuki, has been reported missing after going to school last week. Her father, Muhd Zaki Jahaya, 46, who is Kampung Perenggan Federal Village Development and Security chairman, said Nur Ainina Adila was sent to school, which was about three kilometres away, at about 11.30am on Oct 24 on a motorcycle by a neighbour, Rosnah Ahmad, 46, who was paid to do so. He said Nur Ainina Adila was found missing when Rosnah went to pick her up after school about 5.30pm the same day. "Rosnah waited for 30 minutes and then contacted my wife, Hajar Othman, 44, when my daughter still did not appear," he told reporters at his house at Kampung Perenggan, Lunas here today. Muhd Zuki said he lodged a missing person's report on her daughter, the youngest of four siblings, about 9.45pm the same day after failing to find her. Dr M: Continue with Look East policy Posted: 29 Oct 2011 09:53 PM PDT LANGKAWI: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia and other Islamic countries should look to other Eastern countries and not the West as a model for their development. He said he believed he made the right decision in introducing the "Look East" Policy of emulating work ethics and business techniques from Japan and South Korea during his tenure as the prime minister. "Right now, there are so many problems with Western countries. The problem in the West is that they have borrowed too much and cannot repay. You cannot have that kind of a country as a model. "If you see countries like (South) Korea, Japan and China in the East ... China has US$3.2 trillion in reserves. They are swimming in money. Korea can come up with major products better than that produced by companies in the West. "Japan, as you know, is a country which lost a war ... totally destroyed but as it rebuilt itself, it become the second biggest economy in the world. If you want to copy or learn something, learn from the successful people, not from the failures," he said during a question-and-answer session at the Third Langkawi Islamic Finance & Economics International Conference (LIFE 3), here. The three-day conference, with the theme "Islamic Banking and Finance: Waqaf, Zakat and Sadakah as Community Empowerment and Strategies for the Economic Transformation of the Ummah", began yesterday. Dr Mahathir said one could not learn much from the West because it was a total failure. "So, we should continue to look to the East and not to the West. The West is going bankrupt," he said. He also said that he was personally against socialism because it would make everyone poor. "For capitalism, it is the way to prosper the country. If we look around, capitalist countries seem to be so rich, that even workers can drive big cars. But people can become extremely greedy ... wanting more and more money without thinking about the consequences. "They borrow and borrow until they cannot pay and they are all bankrupt. Greed will cause this. Today, we are seeing failed countries in the developed world. PM's Kluang visit: A commentary Posted: 27 Mar 2011 03:59 AM PDT 2011/03/27 By Shahrum Sayuthi news@nst.com.my I WAS quietly amused when my hometown friend Fiona reacted with much enthusiasm when I told her that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was making a stopover at her alma mater, the Chong Hwa High School, during his visit to Kluang on Saturday. She is after all a DAP supporter and had not made it a secret to me who she voted for when she had cast her vote for the first time in the 2008 general election. "Oh my God! That's so great of him!" was what she text messaged me in return before proceeding to relate how when as a student she had, along with others, lined the street leading to her school when then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went there in 1987. "That was the last time a prime minister visited our school. I remember it was a very hot day and we were sweating, but we were all so happy that a prime minister visited our school," she added. If Fiona was at the school on Saturday, she may have thought she had been transported back in time to that day. The over 2,000 students, in their all white uniforms, were equally enthusiastic in welcoming Najib. The highlight of Najib's visit to the school was when he mentioned in his speech the government's "landmark decision" to allow Unified Examinations Certificate holders with three credits including passes in Bahasa Malaysia and English, to take part in the special intake for the Chinese language degree course to become Mandarin teachers. The students cheered as he made the announcement. "We (the government) are committed to being fair to everyone and will continue to strive for this. Dreams will not be realised until we are at peace with one another," Najib had said. My colleague Chuah Bee Kim interviewed some of the students and teachers on how they felt about Najib's visit. Seow Yu Sheng, 15, a Form Three student said it was a memorable day as it was the first time he had seen the prime minister in person. "I am happy to see him. Furthermore, he was here today to launch our school's green programme which my teachers have always promoted among us," he said. Another Form Three student, Dana Lim, 15, echoed Seow's sentiment but lamented that Najib's hour-long visit was such a brief one. "My classmates and I nonetheless feel very honoured to have the prime minister at our school," Lim said. Liong Kok Kiong, 32, a geography teacher at the school for the past six years said the announcement made by Najib regarding UEC holders was very uplifting as it was a step towards the success of the 1Malaysia policy. "I also hope that Najib's visit will encourage more English language teachers to join our school as we need more of them here," he said. Later in the night, Najib attended a "dinner with the people" function at down town Kluang which was attended by more than 10,000 people. Such was the overwhelming response given by the crowd when Najib arrived at the function that Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had to pause several times to compose himself while delivering the welcoming speech. Expressing his pleasure, Najib in his speech, suggested that judging by the crowd's response at the function and during his walk-about in several parts in Kluang earlier in the day, Barisan Nasional may probably recapture the lost ground it suffered during the coalition's disastrous outing in the 2008 general election. He told the crowd how an old Chinese lady gave him a 51-year-old Jalur Gemilang during the walk-about. "I was so touched because she told me that it was a gift for my effort in initiating 1Malaysia," he said to thunderous applause from the crowd. The prime minister probably had in mind that Kluang, with its huge Chinese community, was the DAP's first stronghold in Johor before it was overwhelmed there by BN in the late 1970s. However, in 2008, DAP captured the Mengkibol state seat there when its Ng Lam Hua defeated Gan Ping Shou of MCA by a majority of 1,281 votes. Ng had got 13,538 votes while Gan received 12,257. When Najib announced an allocation of RM105 million for the construction of a dam in Kahang to ensure no recurrence of a water supply problem which hit Kluang during last year's Chinese New Year, I immediately sent a text message to Fiona. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the students, aged between 18 - 25 years old were taken to the district police station and released soon after. "We are investigating if the students are from Gua Musang or outsiders," he said after a briefing at the police operations centre here. He said they would also work with the Election Commission and the students' universities during their investigations. The students are from a group, calling themselves Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam SeMalaysia (Gamis) and were allegedly distributing brochures urging the locals to exercise their democratic right to vote. A spokesman yesterday said the group represented students from various universities and had come to Galas to observe the campaign process and also explain to the people certain national issues, including the 2011 budget and how it effects them. Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the detention of the students should not be politicised as they were merely detained for not possessing a valid permit to distribute the pamphlets. "The students were not aligned to any political party and were merely there to urge the people to come out and vote. They are acting on their own and nothing to do with their respective universities. "However, I would like to advise these students to go home and concentrate on their studies instead," he said when contacted. On another issue, Ismail also said the police had to date received four reports on minor incidents involving the parties contesting the by-election here. "I urge all parties to adhere to the laws and prevent any untoward incidents," he added. Hairuddin, who was named Man-of-the-Match, timed his run brilliantly in the box before reaching out to captain Shukor Adan's cross to score from close range after S. Kunanlan's in-swinging cross was misjudged by Terengganu keeper Sharbinee Allawee before hitting the back of the net for the equaliser in the 80th minute. Ashaari Samsuddin had put Terengganu in the lead when he rifled home a pass from Manaf Mamat, in the 59th minute. As for Negri coach Azraai Khor Abdullah, his fourth title as a coach was a belated birthday present for himself as he turned 59 on Tuesday. "What can I say about this win? When I took over as coach seven months ago, Negri were not doing well...and today (yesterday) they are Malaysia Cup champions. I am proud of my players," said Azraai. "We were a better team throughout but our urgency in the final 20 minutes was the key to our win. My players gave their 100 per cent and as for Hairuddin, he made the difference to our campaign." Thousands of fans had already turned up at Friday's concert, timed to coincide with this weekend's Formula One Grand Prix, but were enraged when it was axed for safety reasons. Newspaper pictures showed piles of shattered equipment and the Times of India said one man broke his leg when he was pushed down a stairwell in a stampede. "Many others were also injured in the melee," Shouvik Roy, 41, was quoted as saying, adding that some youths were also taken to hospital. "There were no marshals to guide people and few cops to help." Metallica said the concert in Gurgaon, near New Delhi, was initially postponed to Saturday because of damage to a security barrier, but organisers were then unable to secure a second permit. "We are deeply disappointed with this news as we were looking forward to our first experience in India as much as you guys were," they said in a statement late on yesterday. The Times, which pictured youths in Metallica T-shirts shouting and showing their middle fingers, said fans tore down sound systems, barriers and hoardings, and threw bottles at the stage and LED display screens. DPM: Empower BM as language of knowledge, progress Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:10 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today opened the 8th Malay Literary and Language Congress with a call to the people to empower Bahasa Melayu as a language of knowledge and progress while learning other languages to master the knowledge available in those languages. He said language advocates had an important role to play in empowering Bahasa Melayu by fostering a positive attitude in the people towards the national language. "Language advocates should not act as a mere pressure group but must go down to the ground, to be with the people, and be the drivers of awareness for the multiracial population to gain confidence in the ability of Bahasa Melayu as a language of knowledge and progress," said Muhyiddin, who is also education minister. Intellectuals should intensify efforts to bring out works in Bahasa Melayu besides coining terminology for science and technology in the language, he said. MACC begins probe<br><small>36 files opened on irregularities highlighted by auditor-general</small> Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:43 AM PDT 2011/10/29 By Farrah Naz Karim farrah@nst.com.my PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has begun a series of investigations into irregularities revealed in the Auditor-General's Report 2010. Less than a week after the report was made public, MACC has opened 36 files, including scores of investigation papers on, among others, elements of non-compliance and falsification of documents by government agencies. MACC investigations director Datuk Mustafar Ali said the investigations were initiated as it believed several areas highlighted by the report warranted probing. "However, when I say we are looking at 36 cases, some of them are to ascertain if there are grounds to pursue them. "We'll also look out for elements of negligence, ignorance and those that involve graft," he told the New Straits Times yesterday. Mustafar said that in probing "unrealistic" spending by certain agencies, MACC would also study specifications submitted prior to the purchase of the items. "For instance, if what was submitted was specs 'A' but the purchases did not reflect them and turned out to be specs 'B', that should not have happened. "When this sort of non-compliance happens and payment is made, that is considered falsification of documents. This is clearly an offence under Section 18 of the MACC Act." Asked if MACC felt the differences in pricing highlighted in the report were absurd, Mustafar said his officers refrained from drawing premature conclusions but would look at the evidence in each case. The report, tabled in Parliament on Monday, highlighted several glaring discrepancies in the spending of several government agencies. They included the Marine Parks Department's RM56,350 purchase for a pair of night vision goggles (despite its market value being RM1,940), as well as the payment of RM56,350 (instead of RM2,827) for a pair of Bushnell binoculars. The report also listed four other items that showed the department paid 77 per cent to 2,805 per cent more than it should have been, leading to a price difference of RM172,501. The department had purchased a laptop colour printer for RM11,845 (246 per cent more than the market value of RM3,428), a LCD television with DVD player for RM16,100 (when the market value was only RM2,182) as well as colour marine radar for RM56,350 (when it could be bought for RM8,255). The department's spending on a hand-held portable VHF transceiver was also questioned as they paid 177 per cent more for the items at RM4,324 (instead of RM2,763 each). The auditor-general also had an issue with the spending by Majlis Amanah Rakyat on some of its purchases, including an oven at RM1,200 (compared with the market price of RM419), for baking and pastry-making courses in Kelantan. Also in question are payments made for the procurement of folding beds at RM500 (against the market price of RM100), two-burner gas cookers at RM200 each (rather than RM59.90), hair clippers supplied at RM250 each (instead of RM79) and a blender at RM140 (instead of RM60). The auditor-general also noted that most of the purchases were done through direct negotiations, not open tender, and without the Finance Ministry's approval. Standard operating procedures were also disregarded as the intention for purchase of the items was not tabled before the Mara board of directors for approval. The auditor-general, in its recommendation to prevent a recurrence of such absurd purchases, had asked that experienced staff be put in charge of ordering items on behalf of the government, adding that research should be done to compare prices in the market before an order was placed. Meanwhile, Public Accounts Committee chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said the panel would sit next week to look into the discrepancies highlighted in the report. He had said on Monday that at least seven of the ministries or agencies would need to explain their weak financial management. They included the Health Ministry, Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, Transport Ministry, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, Inland Revenue Board, Customs Department and National Stadium Corporation. Angry fans hack FAM website Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:39 AM PDT Angry fans hack FAM website 2011/10/29 By Ajitpal Singh ajitpalsingh@nst.com.my KUALA LUMPUR: Angry fans have defaced the website of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), with hackers changing its logo and posting vulgar remarks. FAM general-secretary Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said the association would lodge a police report. "This is not the first time. It is something we have experienced before," said Azzuddin, after the Malaysia Cup final team managers' meeting at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday. It is believed that the website (www.fam.org.my) was defaced by hackers demanding that the ticket price for today's Malaysia Cup final between Terengganu and Negri Sembilan be reduced. FAM had raised the ticket price by introducing a flat rate of RM50 last week. Previously, ticket prices were between RM30 and RM50. The hackers called the move "illogical" and branded FAM as a capitalist. The defaced page credited UM'07, cr3ws, gaysec and anti-p4sti for the hacking. More than 54,000 tickets were sold in Kuala Terengganu and Seremban. Fans can buy 16,000 tickets at the stadium from 9am today. Many blamed the heavy rain which started to pour earlier but the rain had stopped before the Tok Guru took the microphone. There was an estimated crowd of about 200 people; its usually not the case as Pas supporters would braved the rain, willing to be soaked to the skin to listen to the party's spiritual leader and Kelantan menteri besar speak. The Sungai Terah polling district has about 95 per cent of Malay voters; in the 2008 general election, Barisan Nasional only managed 78 votes compared to Pas' 215 votes. That was how strong the Islamist party's influence there then. But Umno leaders are anticipating that the situation could change, they believe the level of support to Pas may dip when some 300 registered voters there go to the ballot again on Nov 4 to pick their new representative in the state legislative assembly. "Our candidate Abdul Aziz Yusoff had done a good job in the area, the people know him well because he had served the area as a manager in the South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar). "I want to know them apart from introducing myself as BN candidate. I also want to know the problems faced by the voters here," he told a press conference at BN operations centre in Bukit Cekati here. Aziz, who is Gua Musang Umno division secretary, also refuted claims that the BN election machinery for Galas by-election was too slow. He said the party machinery was actually giving more focus on small gatherings which would enable them to understand the people's problems and needs. "From the feedback that I personally gathered from voters, they are frustrated with the Pas state government's failure to issue land titles and provide affordable homes for them," he said. Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan who was present said BN would continue with its present approach, which was to hold dozens of small gatherings at different polling districts daily. "We will use these gatherings to explain on BN government's development plan and counter all the allegations made by the opposition. "It's more effective compared to big ceramahs," he said. However, he said no gatherings would be held tonight as to allow BN campaigners and voters here to watch the Malaysia Cup final match between Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. He said BN would put giant projector screens at 14 locations as to allow the people here to watch the final match live. KL bourse expected to strengthen Posted: 28 Oct 2011 07:35 PM PDT Share prices on Bursa Malaysia are expected to extend gains next week on heightened global risk appetite boosted by good news from Europe and the US economic outlook, dealers said. "Going forward next week, we expect investors to price in the stronger US and Europe economy as well as the reduced banking crisis risk in both continents," Affin Investment Bank's Head of Retail Research, Dr Nazri Khan told Bernama today. The private sector investors recently agreed to make a 50 per cent cut in Greek bonds and it is expected to boost the firepower of the eurozone rescue fund to US$1.4 trillion (US$1=RM3.13) while the US third quarter gross domestic product data rose 2.5 per cent. "These will push the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) index to a possible 1,524 level, which is FBM KLCI high made in 2008 before the subprime crisis," he added. In line with the positive trend on regional markets, Nazri said the traditional year-end rally has started and is likely to last before Chinese New Year 2012. Meanwhile, TA Securities senior technical analyst Stephen Soo said the benchmark index is expected to strengthen next week, boosted by rising appetite in riskier assets. "We foresee the positive sentiment globally will further help properties and construction stocks to slightly recover after their recent losses," he added. However, OSK Research director/research head Chris Eng said the market is still in defensive position and investors remain cautious amid the uncertain global economic outlook. "There is a possibility the market will dip if the index reaches the 1,500 level, due to selling pressure," he added. Meanwhile, during the whole trading week, the local bourse was in a positive movement with the benchmark index ending Friday's trade with 10.89 points at 1,481.82. Bursa Malaysia was closed on Thursday for the Deepavali holiday. On a week-to-week basis, the FBM KLCI advanced 42.99 points to 1,481.82 compared to last Friday's closing at 1,438.83. The Finance Index gained 339.47 points to 13,420.59 while the Plantation Index rose 177.75 points to 7,494.68 and the Industrial Index added 77.35 points to 2,714.66. The FBM Emas Index rose 310.41 points to 10,117.36, the FBM70 Index advanced 418.94 points to 10,959.65, the FBM Ace Index gained 112.46 points to 4,072.95 while the FBMT100 added 307.83 points to 9,935.99. Total weekly volume declined 6.033 billion shares worth RM7.097 billion from 7.391 billion shares worth RM6.584 billion last week. Main Market turnover fell 4.674 billion units worth RM6.941 billion from 5.491 billion units worth RM6.362 billion on Friday. Warrants turnover slipped to 471.509 million units valued at RM30.039 million from Friday's 659.107 million units valued at RM32.675 million. The initial agreement euro zone leaders reinforced growing confidence in recent days that they were prepared to handle the issue seriously. A dealer said the ringgit would likely be traded between 3.0680 and 3.0850 next week. However, the market would remain cautious, as investors are still waiting for the final stage solution to Europe's economic woes, he said. The ringgit ended the week higher at 3.0680/0720 per US dollar compared to 3.1470/1520 at Friday's close. The ringgit mostly depreciated against other major currencies. However, it fell against the Singapore dollar to 2.4668/4702 from 2.4599/4658 but strengthened against the Japanese yen to 4.0431/0487 from 4.1030/1117 Friday.
