KL shares rebound in early trade

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 06:43 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Share prices on Bursa Malaysia rebounded to open higher, lifted by gains in most heavyweight stocks, dealers said.
As at 9.15 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 4.39 points better at 1,623.69 after opening 1.8 points higher at 1,621.1.

HwangDBS Vickers Research said against a weak external backdrop, Malaysian equities may remain under pressure today.

"On the chart, the key FBM KLCI could be swinging sideways with a marginal negative bias as the benchmark index may find immediate support at the 1,600 psychological mark," it said in a research note.

On Wall Street, investors' sentiment was hit by growing worries that there was still no solution in sight for the ongoing euro zone financial crisis.

"This led US equity indices to slip between 0.6 per cent and 0.8 per cent at the closing bell last night," it added.

The Finance Index surged 24.43 points to 14,4466.6, the Plantation Index fell 3.42 points to 8,239.33 and the Industrial Index rose 1.87 points to 2,793.

The FBM Emas Index added 27.34 points to 11,015.07, the FBM Mid 70 Index improved 22.27 points to 11,810.08 and the FBM Ace earned 1.97 points to 4,280.39.

US stocks slip on eurozone turmoil

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 04:48 PM PDT

NEW YORK: US stocks sank on Wednesday following the paths of markets in Asia and Europe amid a rise in turmoil in the eurozone.

Losses were broad-based, with most tech leaders and Dow blue chips losing ground.

At the end of trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 44.04 points (0.33 percent) at 13,413.51.

The S&P 500 lost 8.27 points (0.57 percent) at 1,433.32, while the Nasdaq Composite shed 24.03 points (0.77 percent) at 3,093.70.

"European markets were mostly lower coming into the open this morning, and that certainly put downward pressure on our markets," said Joe Bell of Schaeffer's Investment Research.

"Some malevolent forces are rearing their ugly head again," said Patrick O'Hare at Briefing.com.

"In particular, worries about the eurozone are front and centre as protests over austerity measures flare up in Spain and Greece. Meanwhile, the US equity market seems to be recoiling at the thought that central bank support might not be the saving grace many had hoped it would be."

Among large-cap shares, Bank of America slipped 1.2 percent, American Express 1.7 percent, Apple 0.9 percent and Oracle 1.9 percent.

Struggling Hewlett-Packard bucked the trend and added 2.4 percent after losing ground for a week.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion surged 6.1 percent after saying it had added two million new subscribers since June, holding on in its fight against rival smartphone makers.

Yahoo! fell 0.4 percent to US$15.68 a day after new chief executive Marissa Mayer spelled out the company's mission to staff and announced a new chief financial officer.

Troubled electronics chain RadioShack gained 1.6 percent a day after the company sacked its chief executive and launched a search for a new leader.

Electric sports car maker Tesla fell 0.4 percent after its revelation on Tuesday of being well behind on its production schedule. -- AFP

THE RACE: Obama, Romney blast replacement NFL refs - The Associated Press

THE RACE: Obama, Romney blast replacement NFL refs

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are crisscrossing Ohio's prime swing-state turf with opposing views on almost everything under the sun. But they seem to agree on throwing a penalty flag on a shared gripe: those unpredictable replacement NFL referees.

And they're sure to find bipartisan agreement from hordes of voters.

"NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon. -bo," Obama tweeted.

Romney echoed the sentiment. "I'd sure like to see some experienced referees with NFL experience come back," he said.

Both were referring to the use of replacement referees by the National Football League during its lock-out of regular officials since June.

Frustration simmering throughout the league and among fans for weeks exploded when a mistake by a replacement official decided the outcome of a televised Monday night football game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks — in the Seahawks' favor.

A last-second pile-up in the end zone was ruled a touchdown for the Seahawks, even though Packers players, their fans and much of the football-watching public saw a clear-cut interception by Green Bay.

Among the irate Packers fans was Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee. "I mean give me a break," Ryan said while campaigning in Cincinnati. He called the ruling "really troubling" and cracked that "I half-think these refs work part-time for the Obama administration in the Budget Office."

With polls showing an Obama edge in Ohio, both presidential candidates were busy there on Wednesday.

During a bus-tour stop in Westerville, Romney predicted that the $16 trillion national debt would swell to almost $20 trillion if Obama wins. It was Romney's 10th visit to Ohio since clinching his party's nomination in May. Obama, on his 13th visit this year, had events in Bowling Green and Kent.

Felda Global gets 'market perform' call

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:41 PM PDT

RHB Research initiated coverage of Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd with a "market perform" rating and target price of RM5, a small premium to the stock's last closing price of RM4.88.

"We initiate coverage on Felda with this recommendation due to its relatively sober earnings growth and our downward projections for crude palm oil (CPO) prices, and similarly unexciting valuations," RHB Research said on Wednesday.

RHB projects a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9 percent for Felda. It expects 1.3 percent growth for the current year and 6.4 percent to 7.1 percent for the next two years. It adds that Felda's disposal of non-core and non-performing assets, which are weighing earnings down, may be the catalyst for a rerating.

Felda has been on a downward trend since its debut on the local bourse late July, last closing 10 percent lower than its initial offer price. The company's US$3.1 billion initial public offering was the biggest in Asia this year.

Obama Defends Mideast Policy at UN - Wall Street Journal

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 09:12 AM PDT

UNITED NATIONS—President Barack Obama, in an address to the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, confronted a series of foreign-policy concerns that have become central in a U.S. presidential campaign that has been largely focused on the economy.

Mr. Obama, under pressure from his Republican opponent in the November election, defended his handling of the political uprisings sweeping the Middle East and stressed that his administration would continue to support the push for democracy in the Arab world, regardless of short-term challenges.

"Even as there will be huge challenges that come with a transition to democracy, I am ...

NFL: League facing fury over referees' "Hail Mary" call - Reuters

REUTERS/Anthony Bolante

Tue Sep 25, 2012 12:07pm EDT

(Reuters) - NFL fans took to the airwaves, social media and the streets on Tuesday to vent their anger over a controversial refereeing decision which handed the Seattle Seahawks victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL is using replacement referees from the lower ranks of college and semi-professional football during a lockout of regular officials caused by a dispute over a new contract.

While the replacements have been criticized throughout the first three weeks of the season for perceived indecisive and confusing calls, unprecedented levels of frustration spilled over after Monday's prime time game.

Trailing 12-7 with seconds left on the clock, the Seahawks were facing a fourth down on the Packers' 24-yard line and rookie quarterback Russell Wilson heaved a 'Hail Mary' pass into the end zone.

Seahawks receiver Golden Tate pushed off on Packers cornerback Sam Shields with what looked a clear case of offensive pass interference before he rose to attempt to challenge Green Bay's M.D. Jennings.

Jennings appeared to have caught and gained control of the ball before Tate's hands made contact with it but as they fell to the ground the two referees close by made differing calls - one ruled a touchdown and the other an interception.

The ruling on the field was touchdown by simultaneous catch and was upheld after being sent up for video review - with some confusion about whether the NFL's byzantine rules allow for a review of a 'simultaneous' catch.

The Packers players fired off protests on Twitter with wide receiver Greg Jennings tweeting: "NFL C'mon Man! Can't even be upset anymore. All I can do is laugh. Laugh at the NFL for allowing America's game to come (to) this".

Other players used stronger language to express their feelings while fans flooded sports radio stations to protest and the media in Wisconsin backed their view.

"Grand Larceny" declared the Oshkosh Northwestern while even the Seattle Times hinted at some sympathy with their rivals, their front page headline stating "Hawks steal one".

On Tuesday some Packers fans gathered outside Lambeau Field to protest while passing drivers hooted in support of placards declaring "We Were Robbed" and "Speechless in Seattle".

"We're trying to get the (original) refs back. With the refs that we have now, they're not qualified to do the job like the other refs are. They're high school and college officials," one of the protesters, Seth Wagnitz, told the Green Bay Press Gazette.

"We really need the refs back because now it has cost us a game and that shouldn't be happening," he added.

STATEMENT DUE

Politicians were also quick to join the outrage.

New Jersey state Senate President Stephen Sweeney said in a statement that he plans to introduce legislation prohibiting the playing of professional sporting events with replacement officials.

"This past weekend in the NFL has not only made a mockery of a great sport, but shined a very bright light on how important fully trained and professional officiating is to player safety," said Sweeney.

"We wouldn't allow a factory or construction site to operate without fully trained supervisors on hand to ensure the safety of employees. Why should we do anything differently when the job site is a playing field?"

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's office telephone number was circulated on Twitter by a Wisconsin State Senator Jon Erpenbach who urged fans to "leave a message".

Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker called via Twitter for the locked-out referees to be brought back.

However, it is by no means only Packers fans who have raised criticism of the NFL for allowing under-qualified officials to take charge of games.

From LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki of the NBA to actor Samuel L.Jackson, social media sites were full of opinion, most of it highly critical of the referees and the NFL for allowing them to be in charge.

NFL.com reported the NFL will make a statement on the incident later on Tuesday.

Public Investment Bank initiated coverage on department store group Parkson Holdings Bhd with an "outperform" call and a target price of RM5.73 per share, citing a strong growth outlook.

Public Investment expects Parkson to report a bullish 10 percent compounded annual growth in 2013 financial year despite negative global sentiments.

New incentives for developers proposed

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:07 PM PDT

The government should consider giving more attractive incentives for property developers to install solar panels in new homes as a step towards fostering the development of green buildings, a construction industry player said.

ATSA Architects' chief executive officer, AR Azim A Aziz, said the government through the 2013 Budget could introduce new incentives in place of present incentives given to developers for the use of green materials including solar panels that could meet the feed-in-tariff requirement.

"There is a lot more potential in feed-in-tariff, but not many people can afford to put up RM44,000, the initial setup cost, on their roof," he told Bernama in an interview today.

Although the price of solar panels has dropped more than 45 per cent in the last two years, the RM44,000 initial setup cost for 16 solar panels and supporting equipment is still considered high among common people, he said.

He said with Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association estimating 100,000 new houses to be built every year, any incentive to the developers could provide an immediate effect to the country's energy supply.

Azim said the feed-in-tariff, which is managed by Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), is a good idea to encourage people embracing the green lifestyle.

He said a set of solar panels comprising 16 solar panels could
generate three kilowatt per hour (kWh) of electricity and with SEDA paying RM1.49 per kWh, this will give the owner a passive income of RM600 per month and around five years to break-even the initial cost.

"SEDA is offering a contract of 21 years, which means that the owner can have 16 years of passive income while living a green lifestyle," he said.

Aziz said another way to hasten the acceptance of feed-in-tariff is through banks which can provide the initial capital.

He said banks could provide loan schemes for purchasing solar panels and related equipment, similar to the hire purchase schemes for buying cars.

"Banks have to be readily involved to make sure the people can afford to place the solar panel at their homes," he said.

He said the schemes could be in the form of loans, hire purchase etc.

Aziz said with Malaysia strategically located under the sun belt, one of the best areas in harvesting the sun's energy, the country receives an average of 3.5 hours of sunlight every day making it a suitable place to implement solar-based technology.

Emphasizing on the importance of green lifestyle, he said as a developing nation, the population was growing and this would exert pressure and natural resources would become more scarce.

The population is estimated to double to 57 million people in 2090 when natural resources and even food are expected to be no longer plentiful.

"We cannot go on building as we did in the past or living as how we lived in the past. We must contribute to reducing green house gases and energy consumption over the years," he said. Bernama

In dueling '60 Minutes' interviews, Romney and Obama make their pitches to voters - Washington Post

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 09:22 AM PDT

On the heels of perhaps his roughest week yet in his bid for the White House, and with swing-state polls showing President Obama gaining ground, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney brushed aside the notion that his campaign is struggling in a "60 Minutes" interview that aired Sunday.

"Well, it doesn't need a turnaround," Romney told "60 Minutes" host Scott Pelley. "We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States. . . . I've got a very effective campaign. It's doing a very good job. But not everything I say is elegant. And I want to make it very clear. I want to help a hundred percent of the American people."

Emmys 2012: What's the verdict? - CNN (blog)

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 08:35 AM PDT

The reaction to the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards has to be split into three categories: The fashion; the entertainment factor, which often rests on the shoulders of the host; and whether those who deserved to win did.

On the fashion end of things, everyone's still salivating over Sofia Vergara's dress, and as far as entertainment value, the 64th Primetime Emmys wasn't half-bad with Jimmy Kimmel as host. Sure, it wasn't the best awards show we've ever seen - Kimmel's routine, we thought, was uneven - but it did end on time (few winners were allowed to stay on the stage long before the music started up).

The awards? That's a different story.

The Atlantic's Kevin Fallon felt that Jon Stewart - the resident provider of the evening's f-bomb - summed up the awards ceremony when he noted in his acceptance speech for outstanding variety program how predictable the Emmys have become.

"Modern Family" still wins the comedy awards, Claire Danes is still a favorite, and so are "The Amazing Race" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

"As entertainment, this year's Emmy Awards telecast was quite good ... But as an awards show, this year's Emmy Awards was unforgivably boring," Fallon said. "Did you miss this year's telecast? If you watched last year's, there's no need to feel bad. You've already seen Sunday night's ceremony."

For The Los Angeles Times, "the show was flavored with a taste of deja vu."

But both Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker and The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes found a few fresh things.

From Kimmel's opening segment, de Moraes said, to Jon Cryer's win in the lead comedy actor category, "Sunday's Emmyscast was, in fact, loaded with surprises."

Who saw "Homeland" sneaking up to grab the outstanding drama title from "Mad Men," de Moraes continued, or "thought Damian Lewis would prove Bryan Cranston's Kryptonite?"

EW's Tucker found, with the biggest surprise for him being the "near shutout of 'Downton Abbey,'" that "all in all, it was a nicely lurching, damnably unpredictable Emmy Awards show, good for viewing if quite decimating for my predictions."

For the naysayers still confused over how the same names win year after year after year, USA Today's Robert Bianco counters that repetitive doesn't mean unearned.

"Yes, many of the wins were predictable - 'Modern Family,' 'Homeland,' Damian Lewis, Claire Danes, Maggie Smith, Julie Bowen, 'The Amazing Race' and Louis C.K. among them - but they were predictable precisely because they were so well-deserved," Bianco asserts. "What, should the voters pick lesser winners just so we'd be surprised?"

As for Kimmel, Bianco wasn't as satisfied, saying that while the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" host is a funny guy "in the right time and place," the 64th Primetime Emmys wasn't it.

What'd you think of the ceremony, and what's your verdict on Jimmy Kimmel as Emmys host?

Public Invt starts Maxis with 'neutral'

Posted: 23 Sep 2012 07:31 PM PDT

Public Investment Bank initiated coverage of Maxis Bhd, the country's largest mobile phone operator, with a "neutral" rating and a target price of RM7.26 per share, citing dismal growth prospects due to narrowing profit margins.

"Though we acknowledge progressive growth from the non-voice segment, we think Maxis' strategy of offering more competitive voice packages for the sake of reclaiming its subscriber losses will eventually depress its margins," Public Investment said in a note.

However, the research house said Maxis' downside risks will be cushioned by its dividend yield of 40 sen per share.
